PAWSitive Vibes
First of all, thank you for your recent attendance and support of our Parent-Teacher
Conferences. The EES Staff is thankful for and inspired by the support of our parents!
Starting on March 8th, the testing window for the PAWS (Proficiency Assessment
for Wyoming Students) will begin. During the last three weeks of March, the entire
student body at EES will be taking different subtests of the PAWS to show their skills
in the areas of reading, writing, and math (4th grade will be doing science assessments
as well). We feel confident that our students will excel in these tests; they have been
working hard all year and the PAWS will reflect those efforts.
We ask that you have your child at school every day with a good breakfast and plenty
of rest. Most of our testing will take place during the morning and we need students
here and ready to go!
If a student misses days during the testing window, he or she is required to make up
all missed testing, so please let us know in advance of planned absences. Also, please
prepare your child with the fact that he or she will need to make up any testing missed.
We are very appreciative of your efforts and support of our school. Thank you for all
you do!

Doc Hudson’s Corner
Children’s friendships are an important part of their experience at school. As children become
more aware of their peers, they begin to place more importance on friendships. Friendships can
be a positive support for children, even if a child only identifies one other child as their friend. Research has documented
that having close friendships can help alleviate the effects of stress, increase self-esteem and confidence, make children
more resilient against hardship, and be a protective factor against mental health difficulties such as depression (Howard
& Landau, 2004). Despite these benefits, children’s friendships can sometimes be a source of frustration. Talking with
children and a child’s teacher can provide a lot of information on how the child approaches making and keeping friends.
When children need help with establishing or choosing friendships, parents can help by being aware of their child’s current
friendships – Who is your child choosing for friends and why? – as well as modeling good friendship skills. Children can
be taught specific skills to be friendly, such as giving compliments, being interested in others, communicating, and problem
solving. If your child is having difficulty with friendships, you can ask his/her teacher for more information on what’s
happening at school. We have friendship groups at Etna for students to make new friends and practice proactive friendship
skills, and I can also work with individual students or small groups on specific friendship issues.
