Betty Wood attends family

reunion in Tennessee

earlier this month. Left to right are Roberta Zielke of Edmond; Geraldine

Eufaula schools get

new meal options

An unusual approach to preparing and

serving meals that are healthy and nutritious will be on the menu for Eufaula Public Schools for the 2015-16 school year,
thanks to a newly announced partnership
between the school district and Keystone
Foodservice.
Keystone Foodservice focuses on providing freshly prepared breakfast and lunch
options for the students it serves. The company, which serves approximately 22,000
students daily, was recently selected as
the cafeteria vendor for Eufaula Public
Schools.
Keystone Foodservice prepares fresh
meals built around the tastes of the students, Jeanette Smith, superintendent of
Eufaula Public Schools, said. The burgers
and chicken are seasoned by hand and
cooked on a grill. We expect our students,
teachers and staff are going to be looking
forward to eating the meals provided by
Keystone Foodservice.
Lunch includes a full salad bar, stocked
daily with fresh fruits and vegetables.
Free and reduced prices are available for
students who qualify, and the meals will
remain at the same price.
Our goal is to provide healthy meals
that kids will actually eat, said Josh
Sanders, CEO for Keystone Foodservice.
We do that by listening to the kids and by
continually introducing new foods. When
it comes to a healthy diet, kids and adults

have this in common: variety is key.

Keystones menu offerings include
homemade chicken enchiladas, honeybaked ham and grilled hamburgers made
from lean ground beef. Main courses are
accompanied by offerings including freshly
steamed vegetables and hand-cut sweet
potato fries.
Study after study has shown that kids
who eat a balanced diet perform better in
school, so we take the work we do seriously, Sanders said. We want the kids to
leave the cafeteria full and ready to focus
on the day. Our meals dont just taste good
theyre designed to serve as fuel for kids
in the classroom.
Keystone got its start providing meal
service at fraternity and sorority houses
on college campuses in Norman and Stillwater. The company began serving its first
public school at the request of one of its
vendors. Today, Keystone serves more than
55 schools in Oklahoma, and the company
continues to grow.
There are some great school administrators in Oklahoma who truly want to do
whats best for their students, and they
are willing to think outside the box when
it comes to nutrition, Sanders said. We
are proud to partner with Eufaula Public
Schools, and we are grateful to the school
board and the administration for their
willingness to try something new to benefit
the kids they serve. We are already getting great feedback about the food we are
serving here, and we are looking forward
to always cooking up something great for
these kids.

Betty Wood of Eufaula recently attended the

annual Northcutt Family Reunion, held at Estill
Springs near Fayetteville,
Tenn., for the past 75 years.
The event, which takes
place on the first weekend
in August, usually draws
about 100 descendants
from around the nation.
Before attending the
Estill Springs reunion,
Wood and three sisters visited with their oldest sister,
Joyce Ables, at the Donalson Care Center in Fayetteville.
The sisters include Wood
and Ables and Roberta Zielke of Edmond, Geraldine
Davis of Sapulpa and Reba
A. Cardoza of Vacaville,
Calif.
The five former Northcutt
sisters are descendants of
the late Clarence Shorty

Applications open for Certified Healthy Oklahoma Programs

An important contributor to improving the health
of Oklahomans is providing opportunities to make
healthier choices where we
live, work, learn and play.
The Certified Healthy
Oklahoma programs help
meet this challenge by recognizing those communities, schools, businesses,
campuses, early childhood programs, congregations and restaurants that
encourage health-focused
behaviors and policies.
The Oklahoma State
Department
of
Health
(OSDH) announced that
applications are now being
accepted

We are pleased with
the growth of the Certified

Northcutt and Neva Gladys

(Johnson) Northcutt.
The couple met in Chicago, moved to Tennessee
and then later moved to
Oklahoma.
They made Oklahoma
their home and over the
years had eight children,
including two sons Leroy
and Jesse and a sixth
daughter, Bonnie Northcutt
Mosier, who passed away
when she was 33 years old.
The brothers were unable
to attend the reunion this
year.
Oklahoma is the state
where the siblings greatgreat-grandmother, Abbie
Lowe, a Creek Indian, was
forcibly marched from
Tuskegee, Ala., during the
last forced roundup and
removal of the Cherokee
and Creek Indians down
the Trail of Tears.

They took her land here

and then she went to Oklahoma and took her land
away there, said Wood.
The government then
gave the siblings greatgreat-grandmother
140
acres of untillable land,
Wood said.
All of the Native American siblings are registered
with The Bear Clan of the
Muscogee (Creek) Nation.
Ables, the eldest sister,
moved to Tennessee with
her husband, Lewis Albes
Jr., in the late 1950s and
in 1966 she was given a
position in the activities
department at Donalson
Care Center.
She worked there for the
next 37 years, until 2003.
She and her husband
celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last year.
