(Intake: 2016/2017)
The scholarship offers foreign graduates from development and newly industrialised countries from all
disciplines and with at least two years' professional experience the chance to take a postgraduate or
Master's degree at a state or state-recognised German university, and in exceptional cases to take a
doctoral degree, and to obtain a university qualification (Master's/PhD) in Germany. The portfolio includes
38 programmes mainly in the fields of economic sciences, development cooperation, engineering,
regional planning, agricultural and forest sciences, environmental sciences, medicine and public
health, social and political sciences.
What is supported?
Individual scholarships that are listed on the "List of all Postgraduate Courses With Application
Deadlines" (see www.daad.de/ast or attachment)
Duration of funding
12 to 36 months, depending on study programme
Value
Depending on academic level, monthly payments of 750 for graduates or 1,000 for doctoral
candidates, payments towards health, accident and personal liability insurance, travel allowance,
unless these expenses are covered by the home country or another source of funding
What requirements have to be fulfilled?
Candidates have to have a Bachelor degree (usually a four-year course) in a respective subject
Candidates have to prove that their motivation is development-related
Candidates are expected to take on social responsibility and initiate and support processes of
change in their personal and professional environment after their training/scholarship
The last academic degree (usually a Bachelor's degree) should have been completed no longer
than six years ago
At least two years' of relevant professional experience
Profound language skills, depending on chosen study programme
