4. Identifying, Forecasting, and Comparing Costs and Benefits

Costs and benefits of the proposed computer system must always be

and schedule the project.
Control: using feedback to monitor the project, including comparing the

The Causes of Failed Projects

Failure to establish upper-management commitment to the project
Lack of organizations commitment to the system development methodology
Taking shortcuts through or around the system development methodology

Poor expectations management

Scope creep
Feature creep
Premature commitment to a fixed budget and schedule
13

The Causes of Failed Projects (contd)

Overoptimism
Inadequate people management skills
Failure to adapt to business change
Insufficient resources
Failure to manage the plan
Most project managers were not educated or trained
14

Success IS Projects
The resulting information system is acceptable to the customer
The system is delivered on time
The system is delivered within budget
The system development process had a minimal impact on ongoing business
operations
