SES equipment stolen

By Jessica Howard

Callous thieves who broke into the Bacchus Marsh

VICSES unit last week have stolen more than $6000
worth of property.
A red Honda 2kva generator and two Stihl chainsaws
were taken from the Gisborne Road headquarters
at around 3.40am on Monday (August 17) after two
thieves forced themselves into the building.
One of the chainsaws, a brand new Stihl MS362 model,

was received by volunteers only five days prior as part

of the 2015 Mid West AAMI equipment handover.
Deputy controller of operations Bill Robson said
members of the Bacchus Marsh unit were disappointed
to hear of the break in, especially considering they
were all volunteers.
Our volunteers work hard to fundraise throughout
the year to pay for and maintain equipment like this,
making it all the more frustrating to have something

like this happen, he said.

The chainsaws are a vital piece of equipment for our
volunteers who respond to hundreds of storm damage
tasks each year.
The next day, following the break-in, the generator
was fortunately located; with SES volunteers believing
it was dropped by the thieves as they fled the building.
Anyone with information is urged to contact Bacchus
Marsh police on 5366 4500.

Surface not up to scratch

By Kate Taylor

The Ballan recreation reserve oval has more mud

than grass cover as the Ballan Football club played
Beaufort in their second last home game for the
season. Photo Helen Tatchell

Ballans footy oval made it

through the 2015 season but
only just.
Ballan FC trained on ovals at
Darley and the Ballan Primary
School in the latter part of the
season after heavy rains damaged the recently resurfaced
ground.
Club President Bill Smith
explained that the drainage
issues that damaged the playing surface were pointed out
before council started works
on the oval.
We raised it when they made
the announcement about the
resurfacing, the whole reserve
drainage needs to be done.
Council didnt have the funding for it, Mr Smith said.
For the first half of the year
the oval was fantastic - but this
issue was identified before the
project started, and the Shire
had to re-seed the whole oval
because the seed all washed off
the first time.
The re-seeding worked but
when heavy rain fell this season, the ground flooded and
the surface was damaged.
It starts from up at the gate
and runs all the way down.

The northern end is pretty

bad, from the water that runs
onto the oval. We even tried to
dig a drain around the oval - a
bit of a gutter around the outside of the oval to try and catch
a bit of the water but it hasnt
seemed to have helped.
The Club has done what it
could to protect the surface.
We do understand that the
grass was young also, and
thats why we took all measures to look after the grass by
keeping off the oval as long as
we could.
Weve been training at Darley
and at Ballan Primary School,
weve tried to save the ground
as much as we can. It only just

got through the year without

having to move a game.
Council CEO Rob Croxford
said that the Sports and Recreation team have worked beyond
the scope of the refurbishment
project to address drainage issues at the reserve.
The current ground is battling to get through the season
which was expected in its first
season since the refurbishment
project was completed in April
2015, Mr Croxford said.
He said the reserve is managed by a crown land committee of management and council
has no direct day to day responsibility for the recreation
reserve.

Youth space
online choice of voice

By Kate Taylor

Unfortunately just nine people

have attended two council-run
in person consultation sessions
about a potential youth space in
Moorabool.
On the positive side, over 250
have submitted their opinions
online.
Blackwood resident and youth
advocate Daniel Emerson enjoyed an intimate session with
the Mayor and consultant last
week when he was the only person to attend the Ballan session.
I heard it on the radio in Ballarat, on 3BA, and I thought it
sounded interesting so I went
along and had a chat to the nice
consultant lady doing the survey, Mr Emerson said.
It was advertised as a meet
the councillors, tell them what
you think about a youth space
kind of thing but sadly, Paul
Tatchell was the only councillor
who bothered to show up.
Mr Emerson said he thought
the session was poorly advertised and held at a bad time
5pm which made it hard for
people to get to.
Eight people attended a session held in Bacchus Marsh last
week.
Mr Emerson added that he is
disappointed in the approach
that some councillors have taken to the idea of a youth space.
Its a little bit sad that theres

a mentality of some councillors

that they dont want the project
to go ahead for some reason. Its
an idea thats been a lingering
presence over council for many
years
How can, for example, a wellto-do councillor from an upmarket house in Bacchus Marsh
ever relate to the struggles of a
teenager in Gordon struggling
with their sexuality, or someone experiencing domestic
violence?
A youth space is so important, and council needs to pull
the finger out, so to speak, and
stop debating the wording,
whether it is a youth space or a
youth centre, and invest in 21st
century infrastructure for our
youth.
He said that a previous model
in Moorabool failed, but that
Melton has an excellent youth
space and that one in Moorabool is vital.
We can spend all this money
tackling graffiti, cleaning it up,
but we could also spend a little
bit more money up-front and
knock off the problem of having
young people wandering the
streets with nothing to do when
they can go to a youth space.
Issues would include where
the space would be located and
how young people from across
the shire would access transport to it, as well as what the
budget would be.

The Moorabool News 25 August, 2015 Page 5

Court in action

By Jessica Howard

But Mr Emerson said that a

youth space would be somewhere that youth could go to
meet up with friends, and could
have a community noticeboard
for job advertisements or businesses seeking young apprentices, and even health professionals for young people to see.
Now is a better time than any
to finally get this done.
Council CEO Rob Croxford
said that the low attendance
was not unexpected, as young
people prefer to discuss matters
online.
On-line has been producing
plenty of debate, discussion
and resulted in more than 135
young people and more than
130 parents and carers plus 16
agencies making submissions
so far on this important topic,
Mr Croxford said.
This is an important part of an
ongoing conversation with our
community about youth, theres
a further opportunity for the
community to put their view
across when a draft report is
put on a month long public exhibition period later this year.
Submissions close on 4 September, and can be made by
Young people 12 25 Years at
www.research.net/r/Moorabool-YouthSPACEyouthsurvey
and by parents, carers and the
community at www.research.

A Bacchus Marsh woman who failed

to identify herself before fleeing from
police was brainwashed by her fatherin-law, a court has heard.
The 25 year-old, whose name has been
suppressed, appeared in the Bacchus
Marsh Magistrate Court on Friday,
where she pleaded guilty to charges
including failure to identify to, and fleeing from, a police officer.
On August 26 2014, the accused was
observed by police driving along Geelong-Bacchus Marsh Road in Anakie at
speeds of up to 120km/hr in a 100-zone.
Upon being intercepted, the woman
allegedly wound down her window
by a few centimetres before refusing to
provide any form of identification and
driving off.
The police followed the accused with
their lights and sirens on, however she
failed to stop the car until she arrived at
her home in Bacchus Marsh, the court
heard.
A few days later when interviewed by
police, the woman had no explanation
for failing to stop, however said the

By Kate Taylor

reason she didnt identify herself was

because she had no name under the law.
Represented in court, the defendants
solicitor stated that his client had been
living with her father-in-law for some
time and had been persuaded to believe
in his alternative practises, known as
The Kate of Gaia.
It is a theory based on the legal name
being used by the government to harm
humanity, he explained.
Basically you dont acknowledge that
you have a legal name at all and if you
are carrying ID than you are giving into
this conspiracy. My client believed that
if she had revealed her identity then she
would be committing a felony.
The solicitor stated that his client had
been struggling with mental health issues and was very vulnerable, therefore
was easily persuaded to believe her
father-in-laws beliefs.
Her husband and mother have since
sat her down and convinced her to
abandon the idea and she is now able to
acknowledge how bizarre it was.
The woman received a $500 fine with
conviction.

Council Clip

An application for a planning permit to subdivide land at Gordon has been refused
by Moorabool Shire Council.
The proponent sought to subdivide the 323 Millbrook-Egerton Road property into
two lots.
Councillors voted at the August council meeting to refuse the application on agricultural grounds, in line with the recommendation made in a report prepared by
council officers.
The motion to refuse was moved by West Ward Councillor Tom Sullivan and seconded by East Ward Councillor Dave Edwards.

SOS on rezoning

By Kate Taylor

Locals are reacting passionately to a proposal to rezone prime Bacchus Marsh

residential land to build a
Bunnings store, along with
bulky goods stores.
The proposal is currently
out for public comment and
Moorabool Shire Council
has stressed that it is just
a proposal and not a done
deal.
However, members of the
Save Our Streets group are
dedicated to stopping a development that they say will
cause even more congestion
in an area already suffering chronically from the
problem.
The group is made up of
online members and one,
Marg Scarff, said she cannot understand why Council thinks it would be a
good idea to re-zone prime
residential land in the centre of Bacchus Marsh to
commercial.
Especially when this is
contrary to their own strategies designed to meet
increased demand for hous-

ing, Ms Scarff said.

Moorabool Council should
stick to its original plan to
create a liveable township
where people are encouraged to walk to the shops
and leave their cars at home.
Clifton Park residents can
and do walk to the town
centre and with an ageing
population this is going to
be even more important.
Ms Scarff said she does not
know anyone who goes to
Bunnings without their car
so the proposed re-zoning
for Bunnings will result in
more traffic congestion and
eventually stress on Council
to re-zone farm land to replace lost residential.
There has to be a point
when Council understands
that residents have had
enough of planning decisions that destroy the country look, feel and liveability
of our town, and for the sake
of what? The arguments
about creating employment
and less money going out
of town are as watertight as
a sieve. There are plenty of
examples where local businesses have closed due to

Bunnings coming to town.

Our local businesses just
keep on giving to the community, employing locals,
supporting sporting clubs,
providing food for the food
bus etc. and the money stays
in the town!
Fellow group member
and former councillor Russ
Hendry also opposes the
proposal.
Im not against Bunnings,
Im just against changing
prime residential land into
commercial land, Mr Hendry said.
Thats probably the best
development, in Clifton
Park, for the houses and
the streetscape, theyve earmarked 55 houses to go there
and council is rezoning land
everywhere into residential
because theres a shortage
- and now theyre going to
change this to commercial,
what the hell for? People
bought into those properties
being in a residential area,
and now councils changing
it to commercial?
The proposal is out for public comment until 18 September 2015.

What The Councillors Say

I voted against it in the first place and I wont be changing my mind. Its in the wrong place,
and I dont think we need a Bunnings in Bacchus Marsh at this stage. My opinion hasnt
changed one little bit. My daughter lives in Echuca and they had a Bunnings built there and
two local hardware stores closed down; weve got Wilsons here employing local people
and it would be the end of that which I dont think is fair. - Cr Allan Comrie
I probably know some of the issues Ill be looking at, but I want to see what the submissions
say - I also want to spend a bit more time looking at some of the benefits, it all comes down
to the net community benefits and its too early to say which way Id be prepared to vote.
Theres a lot of difficult issues to consider. - Cr John Spain
I was one of only two councillors who voted against it originally; my initial view was at that
time I didnt support it because I believe that the land is currently zoned residential for a
reason - its identified in our existing strategies as being an ideal place for residential. That
said, well need to find out what people have to say, and what the panel has to say. - Cr
Dave Edwards
As yet I have not formed a view on the Bunnings proposal. I will read all submissions
on the proposal. I will then consider the identified benefits and negative impacts before
forming a final view. Whatever decision is made must be for the good of Bacchus Marsh
and its residents. - Cr Tonia Dudzik
My opinion is that its inappropriate for a councillor to comment on any planning application
that hasnt come before council through a decision.- Cr Pat Toohey
Because its a re-zoning of land, that makes it complicated - if it wasnt for the re-zoning I
dont think wed have grounds to knock it back. We need to understand the effects on the
people that live in the area, whether it has any benefits for the town, and really I dont have
an opinion because we dont even have a traffic study yet and until all that information
comes in, I dont have an opinion. - Cr Paul Tatchell (Mayor)
Planning scheme amendments are a multi-staged process which people sometimes
arent fully across, council agreed to go on exhibition, but that doesnt in any way suggest
that council at a later stage will endorse it or not endorse it, its a process. It wouldnt be fair
to make a comment at this stage - the proponents have asked for it to go out on exhibition
which council has done, and now theres an opportunity for everybody to respond and
have their submissions submitted to council. Even if someone said traffic is an issue, it
may be that it can be remedied the mere fact of traffic in itself is not a game-stopper.
There may be engineering measures put in place to rectify it, I guess thats what has to be
considered. You can mitigate against some issues. - Cr Tom Sullivan

Where To
To From
From Here
Here
Where
1. At the conclusion of the public exhibition and submission stage, council will consider all submissions made to the amendment.
2. If Council receives submissions that cannot be resolved and wishes to proceed with the amendment, it must request that the Minister for Planning appoint a Planning
Panel to consider submissions and make recommendations to Council.
3. Council then must consider the recommendations of the panel in deciding whether to adopt the amendment - with or without change - or abandon the amendment.
4. If adopted, the Amendment is submitted to the Minister for his consideration.

Matthew Young

Senator Mitch Fifeld Assistant Minister for Social Services announced a funding boost to the Home and
Community Care (HACC) programme in Victoria will deliver an extra 200,000 hours of care and support in the
home to older people, younger people with disability and their carers. There are around 440 HACC agencies
across Victoria providing support to more than 300,000 older Victorians, younger people with disability and their
carers.
HACC services provide practical assistance, including domestic assistance, personal care, property
maintenance, nursing, occupational therapy, physiotherapy and respite. Moorabool Shire Council Aged and
Disability services continues to work hard to meet the needs which are constantly growing. Again new and
innovative ideas are being rewarded by the Department of Health and Human Services [Health].

U/16.5 Reserve Coach of the Year Ben Velden

(Bacchus Marsh) Ben Velden has been involved
as a coaching member of Bacchus Marsh JFNC
for a few years. This is Bens second year as the 16
Reserves coach and he is a long-time member of
the club, having been previously involved as a
player. Ben exemplifies all the characteristics
required of a coach particularly in the higher junior
age groups. As a school teacher Ben has an
uncanny ability to communicate effectively and is
able to identify well with his players. Ben is a very
competitive, but ultimately a very fair, individual.
He is very modest when his team wins and is also
very gracious in defeat. He has his sights firmly set
on the ultimate prize for this year. Ben has had a
very successful year so far in coaching his side to
minor premiers on the home and away table.

2015 Junior Football Administrator of the Year - Dale Murley

(Darley JFNC). Dale is in his first year as Junior Coordinator at
the Darley FNC but you wouldnt know it. What he has been able
to achieve in his first 12 months in the role is truly remarkable. Not
only is he filling the role of Junior Coordinator, he also took on the
newly created position of Coaching Coordinator, where he works
closely on the development of Coaches within the club, BFNL
U/12 Interleague Coach and joint AFL Goldfields U/13 Interleague
Coach. With the assistance of the committee of the Darley Junior
Football Netball Club, Dales impact on the clubs performance in
all areas has been evident and its a credit to the hours he has put
in as volunteer at his club. Dales passion and enthusiasm for his
club is evident when you speak to him about how things are
travelling with the Devils and that passion extends to his role as
Interleague Coach with the League. Dales achievements
throughout the 2015 season makes him a worthy winner of the
Junior Coordinator of the Year award.

2015 Junior Netball Administrator of the Year

- Jacqui Segrave (Bacchus Marsh JFNC).
Jacqui Segrave has been involved with the
Bacchus Marsh Junior Football Netball Club as
the junior netball coordinator for 2 years.
Previously, Jacqui was involved as a very hard
working and diligent general committee person.
This year she has excelled in her role as Junior
Netball Coordinator. Jacquis commitment to the
junior netball division is beyond belief. Jacqui sets
exceptionally high standards and always goes
above and beyond expectations. Her contribution
not only to the junior club but also the senior club
is well noted. Jacqui is an incredibly organised
individual and has the ability to form positive
relationships with officials from opposing clubs
and also at league level. Her ability to deal with
and solve personal and game day issues is also
the key to success of our netball division. Jacqui is
a true professional, completely reliable and has all
the key ingredients to see the club continue to
succeed and grow.

Cranking up the coffee

By Lisa Comerford

Phil and Sharlene Gordon

are on a wild ride. Literally.
They recently became the
owners of Crank Coffee, a
mobile coffee shop with a
difference. Its a motorcycle
and sidecar with its own
built in coffee machine!
Sharlene said the previous
owner had been doing it as
a hobby but they wanted to
take the Crank Coffee from a
hobby to a business.
Once we took over, we
did barista courses and researched coffee. We tastetested quite a few and finally

settled on a blend we both

instantly loved. Ironically
the coffee is called Smooth
Ride, laughed Sharlene.
And the business has really
cranked up with the pair
taking it on the road.
We mainly do festivals
and events, and occasionally
markets. We get a lot of people coming up to take selfies
with the bike and the coffee
machine. We hear wow
a lot. We recently did a job
making coffee for cast and
crew of a film, and someone
loved the idea so much we
became extras in the movie,
she said.

Since they began revving

up the business, the invitations have flooded in.
We have been asked to so
many events that weve had
to turn down some great
opportunities. So were now
in the process of building
another coffee motorcycle
so we can spread ourselves
out.
Crank Coffee is one of the
stallholders at the upcoming
Viva la Dulce Sweet Living
Food and Wine Festival, to
be held at St Annes Winery
on Sunday 30 August. The
festival is an initiative of the
Ballan Rotary Club.

Dear Editor,
I write in response to comments by Mr. Wayne Weaire
(CEO BDH&C) regarding
the GP super clinic (MN 18
August).
You stated that you have increased staff, when in fact, I
believe, there has been in excess of 30 hard working and
dedicated staff leave or have
been made redundant since
your arrival.
The only increase in staff
has been at the top end, not
the working group you stated in the paper.
The change of the Pathology business in the clinic
has resulted in some patients receiving accounts,
whereas Dorevitch Pathology is a bulk billing service
and thankfully they take
any companys pathology
forms so Im grateful they
remained in Ballan.
You also stated the main
reason you brought in yet
another Melbourne Company, the new in-house chemist, was because they were
going to be open late, however they close at 3pm and
the Ballan UFS Pharmacy is
open until 6pm.
You changed the cleaners from doing their job
after hours to them cleaning while the clinic is open
was this done in the best
interests of the staff and
patients or solely a need for
cost cutting?
And theres the kitchen
where once again new outside contractors have been
brought in. Who is next to
go?
And now there is an expec-

In a recent edition of The

Age Martin Flanagan wrote
a piece in which he made a
very interesting comment
on Andrew Bolt who writes
for The Herald Sun, and
is a strong protagonist on
many issues and especially
on climate change in which
he attacks any number of
academics who argue that
it is caused by humans. Although the science is well
and truly settled and governments of all persuasions
are acting on it Andrew
Bolt, with a lot of shouting,
disagrees. Martin Flanagan
had this to say about Bolt:
The most honest article Bolt
ever wrote was the one in
which he told of taking out
a Dutch passport as a young
man because he didnt fit
in in Australia. When does
Bolt ever write about love

tation for people to pay a $60

up front fee, before the Medicare rebate ($37) is deducted,
to see a Doctor. I have been
going to the same Doctor for
30 years, but refuse to pay to
go see my doctor (e.g. to get
a script renewal, which is
clinic policy.)
The Ballan GP Super Clinic
was made possible not only
through Government funding but also through the
communitys endless fundraising efforts, $900,000
in donations, and we were
happy to do this as it went
back into the community,
not only by improving services and equipment, but it
brought local employment
and growth to the township
and local businesses.
But now we are seeing local
businesses and staff losing
contracts and jobs, through
no fault of their own, but to
Melbourne companies.
Mr. Weaire, you need to put
the care back into Ballan
& District Health & Care.
Correct me if I am wrong,
but why is it that when members of the community have
expressed their concerns
and complaints in writing
or through emails, they have
had no response?
I do not understand why
you are calling a community
meeting (Wednesday 26 August, 5.30pm) when the signs
already say there WILL be a
co-payment increase of $23
from 1 September.

Dear Editor,
Last year Moorabool Council waived the parking requirement for 13 car spaces
for the building now under
construction next door to the
hardware store in the main
street of Ballan. This means
that nearly a quarter of the
spaces in the relatively new
council carpark behind the
development could be used
by that development, to the
detriment of parking amenity for the wider community
and for visitors to the township. Of course, the development could also use parking in the main street itself
which would even further
exacerbate parking issues.
In my opinion developers
must be held responsible
to meet their own parking
requirements, and if the
proposed development cannot fit such requirement in,
then it is an inappropriate
development for that site.
Apparently uncontrolled exemption of parking responsibilities for developers is not
sustainable and will lead to
a clogging of the main street
and also local streets around
the commercial zone.
There are smart solutions
such as creating parking
underneath buildings, or
placing a substantial levy on
would-be developers in order to create more off-street
public parking, but these of
course have a cost associated
with them and developers
will not use them unless
Council takes a firm line.
You have only to visit the
main street of Daylesford to
see how poor planning has
led to the unpleasant domi-

Dear Editor,
The CFA, a worlds best
practice volunteer fire service, has been developed
over 70 years. Volunteers donate $1 billion worth of time
annually.
So, to review this very complex organisation and get
comment from the 55,000
volunteers, how much consultation time is needed to
ensure everybody has a say
in the future? Six months, a
year, three months?
This city-centric Government has given the CFA
volunteers four weeks to examine the service. And then
four weeks for the review to
be delivered.
Such a short time frame
might indicate the new rules
are already written and
the review is just window
dressing.
The terms of reference
blatantly lean towards generating an outcome that is
favourable to paid staff and
their union, and dismissive
of volunteers.
David OByrne, the reviewer was, until May this year,
national secretary of a large
trade union. Prior to this
and being voted from office,
he was a Labor politician in
Tasmania.
Is there a connection be-

tween the many paid fire

fighters who, dressed in
look-alike fire uniforms,
swamped the marginal polling booths at last election to
support Labor, and this unseemly rush to judgement by
Minister Garrett?
Of course not, after all, favours paid and owed dont
exist in Victorian politics.
Your volunteer brigade
protects you; they now
need your protection. Say
something.

Dear Editor,
After the opening of the
Anthonys
cutting
and
Djerriwarrh bypass, Vic
roads painted large traffic
guidance directions on the
eastbound left lane of the
Djerriwarrh bridge in an attempt to divert traffic from
a hazard which has been
there for years and has been
responsible for hundreds of
accidents. The road has been
cut into a chalk/slate and
sandstone formation that
deposits a soap like material
on the pavement. After a dry
spell the first shower of rain
turns the roadway in to a
death trap. This hazard has
been there for 50 years.
The escarpment needs
treatment and the road
needs resurfacing urgently.
I am sure the local SES and
Police know the hazard
I am referring to as they
have had more attendances
to that road than any other
in the Moorabool shire. Vic
roads knows of the problem
and rather than fix the prob-

that. They dont understand
it so they discard it. And
thats what in the end will

hatred of the coal companies, or anger, but love will
save this place.
Klein goes on to describe
that often in places where
extractive workers will stay
for decades and raise their
kids, the culture remains
one of transience. You just
have to travel to Rosebery
and Queenstown in Tasmania to see this transience.
Klein mentions that it is,
telling that tar sands workers often discuss their time
in northern Alberta as if it
were less a job than a highly

lucrative jail term: theres

the three-year plan (save
$200,000, then leave); the
five-year plan (put away
half a million); the ten year
plan (make a million and
retire at thirty-five). Whatever the details the plan is always pretty much the same:
tough it out at...add any
number of mining towns in
Australia here then get the
hell out and begin your real
life. In one survey 98% of
respondents in the tar sand
area said they would retire
somewhere else. They just
do not love the place and
the money is the only thing
keeping them there.
Naomi says that, beneath
the bravado of the bar scene
in these mining towns are
sky-high divorce rates due to
prolonged separations and

Dear Editor,
Given that Joe Hockeys recent attempt to persuade the
Australian public to accept a
$7.00 GP co-payment was a
resounding failure, one cannot help but feel that Ballan
District Health and Care is
oddly out of step with community sentiment.
Sir Humphrys (Yes Minister) pithy phrases for describing unpopular strategies ranged from the brave
to the courageous. Considering that Ballan intends
to charge over three times
Joes amount must place it
well beyond the realm of the
brave... in case we need reminding, Sir Humphry defines the brave decision as
one that will lose you votes,
wheras the courageous decision would lose you the
election.
Meanwhile it is fascinating
(if not a little unseemly) to
see the cut and thrust of free
market competition alive
and kicking in Moorabool
with two Medical practices
from Bacchus Marsh making a move to throw their
stethoscopes into the ring.
Both proclaimed in advertisments in last weeks Moorabool News, that bulk billing
is still alive and well in the
Marsh. An example of recognising an opportunity when
they see one?

(The Age, August 8, Forum

that Bolt is the alienated individual. These comments
by Flanagan and some readings in Naomi Kleins This
Changes Everything (Allan
Books, England, 2014) have
led me along a certain line of
thinking.
It has to do with the perennial question why are we
destroying the planet. And I
think the answer is because
we just do not love it enough
to want to save it. In This
Changes Everything, Naomi
Klein writes of the lives of
people who work in the extractive industries such as
in coal mines. She quotes a
goat rancher threatened by
an impending coal mine.
The rancher says, That con-

lem they simply try to paint

over it. Lets hope this letter
can get the attention of Vic

Bill Wilson

intense work stress, soaring

levels of addiction, and a
great many people wishing
to be anywhere but where
they are. The recent news on
the ABC here in Australia of
the extremely high takings
of poker machines in the
mining towns is evidence of
this.
Naomi says that this kind
of disassociation is part of
what makes it possible for
decent people to inflict the
scale of damage to the land
that extreme energy demands. A coal worker in Gillette Wyoming, for instance,
told Naomi that to get
through his workdays, he
had trained himself to think
of the Powder River Basin as
another planet. If you get
a chance, go to Savage River
in north-west Tasmania and

see the mining other planet

there.
So, it seems love is the
answer, as corny as that
sounds. I am aware I have
taken Martin Flanagans
comment on Andrew Bolts
apparent lack of love for anything Australian Martin
mentions a figure, a place,
a book, a painting, and a
footy game among the list
of anything Australian maybe further than Martin
intended. Nevertheless, for
this opinion piece I think
place is the key. To save
the planet (place) we need to
love the planet (place).
Is it as simple as that?
What is your opinion?

Median house price growth

Enzo Raimondo
CEO, REIV

While rises in Melbournes median house price have been well

documented, new REIV data shows
significant capital growth has also
been recorded in multiple regional
centres.
The latest data showed substantial
variation in the growth in house
prices between regions and even between towns within those regions.
Wangaratta in Victorias north east
enjoyed one of the states highest
capital gains in the year to June 30
with median house prices there rising 26.9 per cent to $330,000, up from
$260,000.
Meanwhile Geelong, benefitting
from its close proximity to Mel-

Joe McFall Real Estate welcomes

New Agents: Kirsty Black
and Dave Mclennan

bourne, recorded growth of 21.5 per

cent over the year, pushing its median house price to $580,000.
It was also good news for home
owners in the Ballarat suburb
of Canadian, where the median
house price was up from $293,000
to $350,000 - an increase of 19.5 per
cent.
House prices in the coastal town
of Barwon Heads also rose 19.5 per
cent over the 12 months to a June
median of $811,000. This figure was
considerably higher than the metro
Melbourne median of $706,000.
Yarrawonga, on Victorias border,
recorded strong capital gains with
its median price increasing 17.9 per

cent over the year to $336,000, up

from $285,000.
Other regional towns showing double-digit growth include
New Gisborne, up 13.3 per cent to
$575,000, Epsom, rising 12.5 per cent
to $360,000 and Belmont, up 11.3 per
cent to $400,000.
House prices in the Bendigo suburb
of Flora Hill increased 10.7 per cent
over the year to $335,000 while Daylesfords median rose 9.9 per cent to
$412,000.
A range of factors contributed to
the increase in median house prices
including transport links and commuting distance to Melbourne.
Like Melbourne, regional centres

are also recording an increase in

the number of property sales. Mildura, in Victorias north west, had
the highest turnover across the state
with 519 sales in the year to June 30,
up from 460 the previous year - a 13
per cent increase.
Traralgon had regional Victorias
second highest turnover with sales
there increasing 7 per cent over the
year to 348 sales. Warragul also experienced an increase in housing
transactions, up 12 per cent to 235
sales.
Other regional towns with a high
turnover were Ocean Grove (246
sales), Wodonga (245 sales) and
Highton (231 sales).

What does RAM do?

2GB DDR2
Notebook /Desktop RAM*

Your computer uses Random Access Memory (RAM) to

hold program code and process instructions that you
give your software when computing. When you turn your
computer off, RAM loses the data that was used during
the computing session. When you restart your computer
the data from the operating system and the programs
you start is once again loaded into the computers RAM.
(Although modern RAM still retains small portions of data
as either dynamic DRAM or static SDRAM.)

How much memory is enough?

For 1 week ONLY!

Athletes wearing their Crazy Socks

Bacchus Marsh Little Athletics

The Centre held their final Cross Country meet for the season at Masons
Lane Reserve last Saturday. The theme of the day was Crazy Socks
where all athletes and supporters were encouraged to wear their crazy
socks. All races were conducted on a handicap format. Athletes with the
fastest time over the season set off last in an endeavour to run down the
field. Line honours were awarded to Jordana Bullock in the Under 6s 500
metres. Jordana was the backmarker and ran down the entire field. In
the Under 7 & 8 1000m event Freya Lidgett Egan ran a well-paced race to
cross the line first. In the Under 9/10 event over 1500m it was anyones race with 500m to go,
but in a sprint finish Hannah Bullock proved too strong to take the win. Rebecca West lead
from start to finish to claim line honours in the Under 11/12 2000m event, while Under 16
athlete Caitlin Spargo ran her best race for the season to finish first in the Open Age 3km race.
After handicap races had concluded the Centre Cross Country presentations were held.

The Seniors took on Waubra in the first round of the

finals at Learmonth. Its been
13 years since the last finals
appearance for the seniors
having come so close in the
mean time. The Kangaroos
opened strongly and at the
first break they led by a goal.
The Blues lacked their usual
system and intensity at the
ball with coach Mark Williams firing up his crew at
the first break and imploring
the Blues to tackle your opponents and the game will
fall into place. From then
on the Blues took control
and in the 2nd quarter the
Blues had 15 scoring shots
to Waubras one. Dan King
and Zac Peoples did well up
forward kicking six between
them. In the centre Lockie
Herring and Sammy Hitchings were instrumental in so
much of the play. The Blues
slowed in the 3rd quarter to
a crawl but kept their opponents scoring at bay. In
the final quarter the Blues
came home strongly booting
another five goals to seal the

13U winner Molly Ryan.

The Reserves took on top of

the table Springbank at Waubra and knew they had a major challenge on their hands.
To the Blues credit they
opened well and kept pace
with their opponents. The
Blues defence, led by Sam
Sims, was under enormous
pressure and it only grew
as the game progressed. The
Tigers were full of run and
had all the answers. Bernie
Whelan and Brad Cox managed to score four goals and
left with a major gap in the
forward line when Rod
Watts was yellow carded.
Ballan will now take on
Gordon this Saturday in the
elimination round and will
need to be at their best.
Final Score -Ballan 5 4 34

The Under 18s burst out of

the blocks and looked like
they were set for a walk over
but the boys became complacent in the second quarter
and several lapses in concentration led to crucial 50
metre penalties that resulted
in goals against them. This
gave Learmonth the impetus
and their confidence grew as
the game progressed. Dylan
Trickey did an outstanding
job in defence and was ably
assisted by Tom McGregor.
However, Learmonth had all
the answers in the middle
at the main tap outs. Tyler
Trickey made the most of
every chance up forward
and booted four goals for
the day. The Blues came
home in the final quarter but
the gap was too large and
Learmonth shut down the
Blues forward line. Brad Cox
congratulated the boys on
the improvements they had
made throughout the year
and was especially pleased
with the effort of the teams
captain Austin Bongart, who
had led the team well.
Final Score - Ballan 8 1 49

B Grade Elimination Final

The girls were ready for
redemption and went out
there to prove a point. And
a point they made! Jayme
Nielson played an outstanding game in GS with great
footwork and shooting percentage. Supported well by
Kath who made beautiful
baseline drives. Mel and Kylie combined sensationally
to shut both goalers down
who couldnt get close to the
ring. Kath played another
consistent game in WD, taking crucial intercepts down
the court and then providing easy feeds into the goalers in WA. Bec drove the ball
down with ease and Bianca
supported her well with
great drives to the circle.
Ballan 31 defeated Dunnstown 19.

BALLAN PLUMBING

A Grade
Another great start by the
girls saw them take an early
lead. Sam Peoples had another strong game in GA
and Broden Currie equally
as strong, making it difficult for Hepburns defenders. Stacey and Kara Jones
had multiple defenders on
them throughout the game
and that didnt phase them.
They combined beautifully
with great holds around the
ring and feeds into the moving goalers. Alex Shellard
shut down their WA in the
early minutes of the game
and provided strong drives
out of defence. Nicole has
been playing great netball
lately and again had another
strong game taking various
baseline intercepts.
Ballan 41 defeated Hepburn
20.
13&Under
Ballan got off to a brilliant

uting to a brilliant performance all over the court.

In goals Ellie Burquest and
Anais Clifford were accurate
scoring a combined 33 goals;
they were well assisted by
the mid court players, and
in defence Lara Casey and
Bethany Boland were unstoppable. Ballan 33 defeated
Daylesford 17 to progress to
the Semi Finals.
17&Under
The girls also got off to a
strong start and managed
to hold their lead despite
several comebacks and constant pressure from Gordon.
Katelyn McGregor was a
strong target in GS with Sam
Trickey driving strongly
into the ring. Tahneish Clifford dominated through the
midcourt and Megan Mullane was excellent in GD
completely shutting down
Gordons main shooter.
Ballan 38 defeated Gordon
31.
