Volvo D13A480 is a 480HP, 12.8 litre in-line 6-cylinder
engine with an overhead camshaft, 4 valves per cylinder and
electronically controlled unit injectors. The engine meets
Euro3 exhaust emission regulations. The D13A480 is
designed to ensure excellent driving characteristics, high
reliability and excellent fuel efficiency.

Volvo VT2514B is a 14-speed range and splitter gearbox,


designed for maximum engine torque of 2500 Nm. The

RT 3210HV Rear Axle

Three heavy duty straight I-Beam front axles ensure high front
approach angle required for off-road applications. Each axles
technical load capacity is 9 tonnes. The axles are fitted with
maintenance free unit bearings pre-mounted in hub, which
leads to less maintenance & faster repairs.

Volvo RT3210HV is a tandem axle with hub reduction,


designed for maximum loading capacity of 32 tonnes and
engine torque of 3550 Nm and. High rear axle ratio of 7.21:1
ensures enough tractive effort on the Tyre to negotiate the
steepest gradient with ease, even under heavy load.

All the three axles are steerable. The first two axles are
mechanical steerable with hydraulic assistance. The third axle
is steered by electronic actuation and hydraulic assistance.
The steerability of all the three front axles improves the
manoeuvrability and dynamic stability of the vehicle.

The axle casing is cast in nodular iron, giving a compact


design with high ground clearance
Most of the torque conversion takes place at wheel
hubs with four planetary gears. This reduces load on the
driveline and improves vehicles reliability and durability

Suspension

The chassis frame is made from high-strength steel. Its


front section is bent outwards to accommodate the cab and
engine, and has the same material thickness in the web and
the flanges.

Front two axles are fitted with three-leaf parabolic spring


suspension with extra stiffness. The springs feature rubber
spacers in the ends, between the spring leaves,which help to
reduce vibration and bumps.

The frame section thickness is 8 mm, flange width of 90 mm


and 300 mm high. Frame section is reinforced with a
5 mm thick reinforcement profile all along the full length of
chassis. Frame liner is also made of high-strength steel which
provides extra rigidity to the chassis.

Third front axle has electronically programmable air


suspension, which ensures right load distribution across
the vehicle under given gross vehicle weight. Additional
protective cover on air suspension bellows makes it more
reliable for use in the mining conditions.
Rear suspension is of bogie design with 11-leaf springs. It
is also equipped with rubber-journalled V-stays and reaction
rods. The rear suspension is reinforced to meet tough
operating demand of heavy duty mining applications. Rubber
springs between the spring leaves and axles contribute to
good comfort under all axle loads.

Volvo patented Z-cam brake system offers good safety


with high efficiency combined with excellent brake feel and
control. The Z-cam wheel brake is characterized by high
braking effect and precise brake application and offers
increased braking safety on heavier vehicles.

12-24 Cross-ply mining tyres ensure better footprint of the


vehicle in rough mining roads, while carrying heavy load. It
also helps in improving the ground clearance of the vehicle, to
ensure unhindered operation in off-road applications.

Parking brake on Second Front axle and both the Drive axles
fulfills the requirements of added parking brake power for
heavy load operations.

State-of-the-art cabin design for driver efficiency
FM L1EH1 Cab
Volvo FM L1EH1 cab offers a very high level of comfort with
ideal driving position, anatomically designed seats, low noise
level, high capacity climate control system and a world class
safety level.
The L1EH1 is aerodynamically designed with smooth
surfaces and rounded corners in the front. Tailored airflow
systems and complete chassis skirts additionally lowers the
air resistance.
The interior of the cab has been designed and developed
with the focus on the driver. The driver has good all-round
vision through the large windscreen, large rear-view mirrors
and a close-quarter mirror on the passenger side. The
effective main head lamps provide a concentrated, long-range
beam of light.
Shift by cable and servo function provide high driver
comfort
The VT2514B is equipped with a newly developed shift by
cable which results in short, distinct gear lever movements.
The gear lever is completely free of vibration, which
contributes to comfortable operation and a lower noise
level in the cab. The gearbox also has patented
synchronization which, with the assistance of a mechanical
servo function, provides extra power at the moment of
synchronization.

Clear instrumentation
The cabs instruments have a simple and logical design with
convenient and easy to use controls. Driver information is
provided via a clear display on the instrument panel.

maintain, and offers good storage space.
Adjustable steering wheel for an ideal driving position
The angle and height of the steering wheel can be adjusted
with a foot pedal on the left side of the steering column. The
range of height adjustment is 90 mm and the range of tilt
angle is 28.

The sound level in the cab is pleasantly low. Well positioned
mirrors provide good all-round visibility. The cab has an
effective heating and ventilation system, with air conditioning.
Ergonomically designed seats
The seats are ergonomically designed and available with
various seat adjustments to find the perfect driving position.
Low and convenient entry
Entry into the Volvo FM cab is low, with two anti-slip,
illuminated steps made of stainless steel. There are sturdy
grab-rails on either side in the door opening. To permit more
convenient entry, the steering wheel can be tilted out of the
way towards the windscreen.

More than the necessary expenditure of energy contributes
to excessive consumption of fuel. Less kerb weight for given
payload consume less energy for transportation which directly
translates to less fuel. More productivity is achieved with less
kerb weight of the vehicle and more payload. The power to
weight ratio improves with less kerb weight.

Electronically controlled operations


The engine control module takes in data from several sensors
on the engine and the vehicle. The control unit compares
current readings with stored parameters And adjust fuel
quantity and injection timing accordingly, throughout the
engines operation. The vehicle control unit collects data from
various cab sensors for vehicle speed, accelerator position,
service brake, parking brake, cruise control, retarder and
power takeoff,and then transmit it to various other control
units in the system. All Electronic Control Units are integrated
with each other for accuracy in controls. This keeps the fuel
consumption low.

In the low-split position, a downshift takes place which halves
the shifting step between two basic gears. Thanks to the
low-split function, the correct gear can be selected in relation

where the power passes straight through the gearbox with a
minimum of friction losses.

Engine idle shutdown


Engine idle shut down happens after three minutes when
four conditions are satisfied. The conditions are engine
must be warmed up, must be running at idle speed, parking
brake must be activated and no usage of brake pedal nor
accelerator pedal must be there. A display warning (no
buzzer) will be given 20 seconds before shutdown.

Integrated split gear gives low fuel consumption


The split gear, which is a compact and sturdily supported
unit, is fitted on the input shaft in the forward part of the basic
unit. The split gear is operated by compressed air, and the
split cylinder is integrated into the clutch casing. The high and

Low exhaust and noise emission

The D13A480 satisfies noise requirements without needing
advanced encapsulation. The crankshaft and camshaft
have hydraulic vibration dampers which minimize noise and

Crankcase ventilation
The D13A480 engine offers fully sealed crankcase ventilation as
an option - the system is called closed crankcase ventilation.
The crankcase gases in the valve cover are returned via a
centrifuge-equipped oil separator to the turbo-charger. The oil
mist is separated in the maintenance-free centrifuge system,
requiring no filter replacements. This system provides an
extremely clean, environmentally friendly engine by re-using
the crankcase gases.

Gradeability
The following graph demonstrates the tractive effort pattern of the vehicle at
various gears and vehicle speeds. Each curve represents the engine torque curve
multiplied by the corresponding gearbox gear ratio, final drive reduction ratio and
inverse of the rolling radius of the tyres. The result indicates the tractive force at the
rear wheels.
The right side data shows the inclination (in percent) which the truck can climb
in each gear. To determine the gear, plot the point which would denote the given
speed against given gradient. Gears on the curves above the point would take up
the given conditions. Any conditions outside the curve would be non-feasible.

Speed
The following graph depicts the vehicles capability to maintain high average
speeds even at the high grades of mining roads. Even at a steep gradient of 1:16,
enough power is available with the vehicle to propel it at a constant speed of 28
kmph.
