Franqois Devienne (geb. L759 in Joinville, gest. 1803 in Charenton bei Paris),franzsischerFagottist, Fltist und Komponist, stand bis 1784 im Dienst des Kardinals de Rohan. Anschlie8end war
er als Musiker in der Schweizer Garde und im Thtre de Monsieur ttig. Deviennewar nicht nur
hochberhmter Virtuose, sondern auch ein ausgezeichneterPdagoge,wie seineerfolgreicheTtigkeit als Lehrer fiir Flte am PariserConservatoireund vor allem seine vielbeachteteMtbode de
Flte bezeugt. Als Komponist schrieb Devienne flir fast alle Gattungen zahlreiche Werke. Seine
Opern wurden bis Anfang des 20. Jahrhunderts oft gespielt, obwohl sie nicht immer den gleichen
musikalischen Wert wie seine konzertanten Sinfonien und Kammermusikwerke haben. Fr den
Einfallsreichtum und melodischen Charme seiner Instrumentalkompositionen legen die Six Duos
Concertanspour Flte et Alto (Paris, ca. 1780) ein lebhaftes Zeugnis ab. Aus dieser Sammlung
wurde fiir die hier vorgelegte Neuausgabedas dritte, vierte und fiinfte Duo ausgewhlt.Sie sind,
wie so oft zu DeviennesZeit, nur zweisu.ig.Man kann aber, entsprechendder Praxis im 18. Jahrhundert, Kombinationen vornehmen. So lBt sich z. B. das F-Dur-Adagio aus dem zweiten Duo
leicht zwischen die Stze des ersten oder dritten Duos einschieben.wodurch in beiden Fllen sehr
reizvolle dreistzigeWerke entstehen.
Abgesehenvon kleinen Korrekturen offensichtlicher Fehler und der notwendigen Angleichung von
Phrasierungund Dynamik gibt dieseAusgabegetreu den Originaltext wieder.

To the presentedition
Frangois Devienne (born in Joinville in 1759, died in Charenton near Paris in 1803) was, apart
from composing, a performer on both the bassoon and flute. He was engagedin the service of
Cardinal de Rohan until 1784 when he accepteda musical post with the SwissLife Guards and at
the Thtre de Monsieur. Devienne ranked not only as a celebrated virtuoso but also as an
excellent musical educator. Testifying to his qualities is the successhe enjoyed as a professor of
the flute at the Paris Conservatoire, above all however his well-knownMtbode de Flte. As a
composer Devienne wrote profusely in musical forms of almost every description. His operaswere
frequently performed up to the beginning of the 20th century, even though they did not always
have the same musical significance as his works written in sinfonia concertante form or his
chamber music. The Slr Duos Concertanspour Flte et Alto (Paris, c. 1780) are fine examples
displaying the richness of creative imagination and melodic charm that distinguish Devienne's
instrumental compositions. For this new edition, the numbers 3, 4 and 5 were selectedfrom the
above set of duos. As was common in Devienne's day, they comprise only two movements. In
conformity with the practice prevalent during the 18th century, however, it is possibleto extend
the length by combining a number of different movements. Thus for instance, the Adagio in
F Major from the second duo can be interpolated between the first or third duo to produce
three-movementcompositions of distinct appeal.
With the exception of minor corrections of obviously errors as well as necessarycoordination of
phrasing and dynamics, this edition is a faithful reproduction of the original text.
