The development of Palm Oil Industry in Indonesia has given positive impact and

negative impact. One of the negative impact is waste which is produced from
manufacturing process in palm oil industrial. Management process and utilization of
palm oil industrial wastes have been done by some of palm oil industry In Indonesia.
Empty fruit bunch of palm oil is the biggest solid waste from palm oil industry that is
generally utilized as mulch, whereas the waste water which is produced from
production process will be processed in anaerobic. But, the utilization process of
empty fruit bunch as mulch is not effective enough because degradation process
does not work so slowly. Waste water anaerobic processing in open pond system is
also not effective enough because it will produce carbon dioxide (CO 2) gas and
methane (CH4) gas. Therefore, it is needed to do some more new effective ways to
treat and utilize the waste.
The first alternative is to treat waste water of palm oil industry to produce biogas in
anaerobic digestion system that is equipped with methane gas capture system, thus
it will produce biogas used as renewable energy source. However, there is a
problem of that alternative technology which is not all waste water treatment result
(effluent) can be utilized in land application as liquid fertilizer. The second
alternative which is offered is to utilize empty fruit bunch and waste water together
as compost through the composting process. The implementation of this technology
lets palm oil factory able to apply zero waste concept that means there will no more
solid waste and waste water wasted. But, this technology also has an issue, it is
only a little of waste water that can be used in composting process.
The newest alternative waste utilization that might be developed is by utilized the
outcome of waste water treatment (effluent) from anaerobic digestion with empty
fruit bunch become compost through anaerobic integrated composting process.
Anaerobic digestion system which is then combined with anaerobic composting
system is expected to produce biogas a renewable energy source in great numbers.
In addition, anaerobic composting process is also expected can reduce greenhouse
gasses emission. The technology alternative will produce three kinds of product,
they are energy (biogas) sourced from anaerobic digestion and anaerobic
composting, fertilizer compost, and lindi that can be used in land application. The
aim of this research is to examine and evaluate that integrated waste management
that is reviewed from some aspects, energy, greenhouse gasses emission so that
can support sustainable of palm oil industry.
This research will be done by using anaerobic digester for waste water processing
process and anaerobic composting digester for empty fruit bunch composting
process. Waste water processing process and empty fruit bunch composting process
will be done in pilot scale. Waste water is incorporated every day to the anaerobic
digester as much as 150 L. The outcome of this process (effluent) is incorporated as
much as 20 L to the anaerobic composting digester that has been filled by empty
fruit bunch as much as 25 kg to composting process. The composting process is
done for 60 days.
The result of this research show
