2. OVERVIEW
There are two types of measurement cell packages available for the Courier
analyzer:
Analyzer probe with Automatic Window Changer (AWC)
Analyzer probe with Sample Cell Assembly (SCA)
These measurement cell types are described in more detail in the following
section.

Functionality
The AWC can either be used for a window change that is automatically
repeated in a certain interval or for a window change that is triggered by using
the commands on the Probe Control Set display. The default interval, which is
the actual time the sample has flown through the measurement cell, for the
automatic window change is 8 hours. The interval can be changed in the user
parameters. You can also set the AWC not to do automatic window changes at
all with an analyzer parameter.
Each window changing operation includes four different phases that are run
automatically. The phases are:
The measurement cell is flushed
The measurement cell is drained
The measurement cell window is changed
The water test is run
The measurement cell window change is based on a pulse mechanism that
stops the film winding when the proximity sensor has counted a certain amount
of pulses for new window film. The measurement cell window change in itself
includes five phases:
Releasing the measurement cell and the measurement cell window
Starting the window winding motor
Changing the window (winding the window forward)
Stopping the window winding motor
Locking the measurement cell window and the measurement cell
After the automatic window change and a successful water test, measurements
are continued normally.

3. RADIATION SAFETY
The analyzer, and the measurement cell, meets all the radiation safety
regulations of the European Union. No radiation can be detected inside or
outside the probe covers. Radiation safety is guaranteed by using redundant
fail-safe sensors with hard-wired interlock circuits that shut down the X-ray
power.
Radiation in use indicator
The X-ray ON indicator lights are located on the roof of the analyzer probe and
on the control panel of the Probe Control Set. The X-ray ON light indicates that
the interlock circuit is closed and the high voltage power supply of the X-ray
tube is on. The X-ray OFF lights indicate when the interlock circuit is open and
the high voltage power supply is off.
Revision A
Page 9 (30)
During the automatic window change, the measurement cell is not opened
and the high voltage of the X-ray tube is ON. If the window change fails,
the high voltage is switched OFF.

4. MAINTENANCE MODE
Before you start the maintenance mode of the measurement cell, you must set
the standby switch on the Courier Local Interface to standby position. Using the
maintenance view in the local display starts the maintenance mode of the
Measurement Cell.
Turn the standby switch to the STANDBY position on the Courier Local
Interface control panel.
Steps 2-5 are needed, if the analyzer has AWC. If the analyzer has no AWC
then after step 1 check that the reference is in the reference position (see that
the REFERENCE indication lamp is ON), and open the measurement cell. Now
the high voltage is shut down.

9.
Remove the old (used film) film reel. See the figure of step 11 for the latch
(at right side) holding the reel. Turn the latch 180 degrees forward and it
pops out. Now the reel is released.
10. Fix the other end of the window film to the lower reel as shown in the
picture below.
Insert the reel in place so that the two pins go in the holes located in
the left end plate of the reel.
Lock the reel by pushing and turning the latch. Turn the latch until it
stops in the groove. (See the picture below.)

Hold the upper reel firmly to ensure that the window film starts winding
around the lower reel. (See the picture below.)
13. Put the sample cell window frame, and the steel plate back in their places.
Make sure that all parts are properly in place and screwed tightly.
14. Tighten the window film.
Activate the Release / lock Meas Cell action to the command button.
Press the Maintenance button to start film change. See that the film
change runs properly.
After the film change is finished, the display shows the execution
status of the film change.

Before starting the protective window change make sure that there is no
risk of tripping water or sample getting inside the analyzer probe.
Also ensure that the new protective window material is the same the
original had.
Enter the maintenance mode. See the chapter Entering the maintenance
mode for detailed instructions.

MC window rupture
The MC window rupture alarm indicates either that the measurement cell
window is ruptured or that there is moisture between the measurement cell
window and the protective window. The alarm stops all measurements in the
analyzer system and shuts down the power to the X-ray tube.
There is a moisture detection hardware sensor that triggers this alarm. Note that
the alarm remains until the measurement cell is opened and the window is
replaced / dried.
Check and correct the situation by doing the following:
1.
Enter the maintenance mode. See the section Entering the maintenance
mode for detailed instructions.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Test the moisture sensor by touching it with a moist tissue or fingers and
see whether an MC window rupture alarm is seen on the local display.
If you encounter problems during or after this procedure, please contact the
maintenance service.

If you have completed the procedure successfully, the analyzer continues with
measuring the samples normally.
If you encounter problems during or after this procedure, please contact the
maintenance service.

MC window rupture
The MC window rupture alarm indicates either that the measurement cell
window is ruptured or that there is moisture between the measurement cell
window and the protective window. The alarm stops all measurements in the
analyzer system and shuts down the X-ray tube power.
A moisture detection sensor triggers this alarm. Note that the alarm remains
until the measurement cell is opened and the window is replaced / dried.
Check and correct the situation by doing the following:
1.
Enter the maintenance mode. See the section Entering the maintenance
mode for detailed instructions.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Wipe and dry the protective window with a dry cleaning tissue.
6.
If the protective window is worn out or even ruptured, change the protective
window as described in section Changing the protective window.
7.
8.
Exit the maintenance mode. See the section Exiting the maintenance mode
for detailed instructions.
9.
The local display prompts you for confirmation with the status message
Waiting for confirmation of MC window status, if the system is
configured to do so.
10. Confirm by selecting one of the following alternatives from the command
list depending on the situation:
If you reply that the window is OK for test, or the system does not require the
response, the system automatically flushes the measurement cell with water to
check that the window is tight and waterproof. If the window is OK, the analyzer

starts the high voltage raise process, and the X-ray On indication lamp comes
ON.
If you encounter problems during or after this procedure, please contact the
maintenance service.
When the measurement cell cover is locked, the system automatically raises
the X-ray tube high voltage and continues operating normally.
In case the alarm still persists, contact the maintenance service.
Enter the maintenance mode. See the section Entering the maintenance
mode for detailed instructions.
2.
3.
Check weather the measurement cell and/or related hoses are blocked.
4.
In case found remove the blockage from the measurement cell and check
that the measurement cell is clear of foreign material.
5.
Place the measurement cell protective window ring back in its place.

AWC or SCA requires changing the front plate of the sample cell
With both AWC and SCA, you might have to change the front plate of the
sample cell.
If you encounter this situation with AWC, do not try to change the front
plate by yourself. Contact Customer Support for assistance.
Enter the maintenance mode. See the section Entering the maintenance
mode for detailed instructions.
2.
