Analyzer probe with Automatic Window Changer (AWC)
Analyzer probe with Sample Cell Assembly (SCA)
These measurement cell types are described in more detail in the following
section.

2.1 Analyzer probe with AWC

The AWC is a mechanism that performs an automatic window change. When
changing the window, the AWC automatically releases the measurement cell
and the measurement cell window film, winds the window film forward
approximately 10 cm, and tightens the measurement cell window film and the
measurement cell.
The window film lasts up to 700 window changes, and therefore, the window
film storage reel needs to be changed manually at approx. six month intervals. If
there is a malfunction in the measurement cell mechanisms, e.g., the motor is
down, you can also change the window film manually.
The analyzer probe with AWC is comprised of:
Measurement cell
Window film reels
Window film material
Capstan motor
Cylinders and their valves
Moisture leakage detection

Functionality
The AWC can either be used for a window change that is automatically
repeated in a certain interval or for a window change that is triggered by using
the commands on the Probe Control Set display. The default interval, which is
the actual time the sample has flown through the measurement cell, for the
automatic window change is 8 hours. The interval can be changed in the user
parameters. You can also set the AWC not to do automatic window changes at
all with an analyzer parameter.
Each window changing operation includes four different phases that are run
automatically. The phases are:
The measurement cell is flushed
The measurement cell is drained
The measurement cell window is changed
The water test is run
The measurement cell window change is based on a pulse mechanism that
stops the film winding when the proximity sensor has counted a certain amount
of pulses for new window film. The measurement cell window change in itself
includes five phases:
Releasing the measurement cell and the measurement cell window
Starting the window winding motor
Changing the window (winding the window forward)
Stopping the window winding motor
Locking the measurement cell window and the measurement cell
After the automatic window change and a successful water test, measurements
are continued normally.

2.2 Analyzer probe with SCA

In the SCA, the automatic window changing functions cannot be used and the
measurement cell maintenance tasks must be performed manually.
The measurement cell area is comprised of:
Measurement cell
Discrete measurement cell window
Measurement cell window clamping ring
Protective window ring
Moisture leakage detection

3. RADIATION SAFETY
The analyzer, and the measurement cell, meets all the radiation safety
regulations of the European Union. No radiation can be detected inside or
outside the probe covers. Radiation safety is guaranteed by using redundant
fail-safe sensors with hard-wired interlock circuits that shut down the X-ray
power.
Radiation in use indicator
The X-ray ON indicator lights are located on the roof of the analyzer probe and
on the control panel of the Probe Control Set. The X-ray ON light indicates that
the interlock circuit is closed and the high voltage power supply of the X-ray
tube is on. The X-ray OFF lights indicate when the interlock circuit is open and
the high voltage power supply is off.

Figure 4. The X-ray ON indicator light.

Only trained and authorized personnel are allowed to open the

measurement cell or the side covers of the analyzer probe.

Radiation safety interlocks

The analyzer includes safety interlocks that provide extra protection both for the
user and for the X-ray tube during maintenance procedures. The radiation
safety interlocks ensure that:
When you enter the measurement cell maintenance mode, the high voltage
of the X-ray tube is automatically switched off before you are able to open
the measurement cell lock. The high voltage remains in the OFF position
through the whole maintenance process.
If the high voltage of the X-ray tube is not switched to OFF within a given
time limit, an event message is triggered and you are not able to open the
measurement cell lock, nor can you enter the maintenance mode.
The maintenance mode function can be called only if the reference is in
front of the X-ray tube and blocking the radiation.
The mechanical design ensures that the analyzer can provide radiation safety.

5.4 Special situations

There are certain special situations that you might encounter with AWC and/or
SCA. These situations include:
Manual AWC window change.
A separate window filmstrip used with the AWC.
Changing the front plate of the sample cell applying to both measurement
cell types.
These special situations are described in more detail in the following.

Changing the window for the measurement cell with AWC

If you have a measurement cell with AWC, you do not need to change the
measurement cell window under normal operating conditions. If there is a
malfunction in the measurement cell mechanisms, for example, the motor is
down, you can change the window manually.
Before you intend to change the window manually you must disable the
automatic window change by setting the appropriate user parameter at
the Options Manager. This parameter is only for temporary use.

To change the window for the measurement cell with AWC manually:
1.

Enter the maintenance mode. See the chapter Entering the maintenance
mode for detailed instructions.

2.

Release the measurement cell and the measurement cell window.

Activate the Release / lock Meas Cell action to the command button.

Press the Maintenance Button on the probe cover to release the

measurement cell.

Activate the Release / lock MC window action to the command

button.

Press the Maintenance Button on the probe cover to release the

window. The measurement cell and the window are now released.

3.

Check that the window is in proper condition.

4.

Wind the window film forward by turning the lower window reel manually.
See the section Changing the window film reel for AWC for releasing the
lower window reel.

5.

AWC requires using a separate window film strip

With AWC, you might encounter situations in which you cannot use the normal
window film material. In this case you should use a separate window filmstrip as
a replacement. You can do so by running the piece of film through the normal
film path of the AWC
Before you intend to use a separate window filmstrip you must disable the
automatic window change by setting the appropriate user parameter at
the Options Manager. This parameter is only for temporary use.
