6. Procedure
6.1 General
Piping system may be subjected to many diverse loadings. Stress Analysis, calculation
of reaction loads due to thermal expansion, contraction in piping system, stress caused
by pressure, weight of pipe, weight of piping components and fluids, equipment
vibration, external occasional loadings such as wind and seismic loads, settlement, frost
heave, structure movements and the selection of the type of supports shall be conducted
in accordance with the criteria defined in codes and standards referenced under sections
4.1.

File Ref. : D:\POLY PROPYLENE DOCUMENTS\Specifications\STRESS ANALYSIS\PGE-SA-000-PD-SP-0015-02.docx

In the cases in which the flexibility of the under examination piping system is found to be
insufficient to absorb the imposed primary and secondary loads (e.g. weight and thermal
loads respectively), those methods listed below shall be adopted, in the following order
of preference:
Introduction of restraints.
Changing in piping routing and inserting a proper pipe loops.
Introduction of spring supports (variable or constant) to the piping system.
Utilizing the reinforcing pad in pipe branches and nozzle intersection with equipment.
Utilizing of proper type of metallic or elastomer expansion joints, victualic, and dresser
type coupling, metal and elastomer hoses, ball type joints and all other in-line flexible
connectors. (Senior stress engineers approval is mandatory).
Employing of cold spring (senior stress engineers approval is mandatory).
The following basic data shall be considered through stress analysis according to the given
value and references:

6.2

The allowance of displacement stress range (SA) is the limit of stress calculation
referred in ASME B31.3 Para. 302.3.5.
Value of stress intensification factor (SIF) for elbows, bends and tees which is used
for stress analysis calculation shall be in accordance with ASME B31.3 Appendix D.
Data base of applied software can be used.
Value of module of elasticity (E) which is used for stress analysis calculation shall be
in accordance with ASME B31.3 Appendix C, Table C-6. Data base of applied
software can be used.
Value of Poisson ratio ( )may be taken as 0.3 at all temperature for all ferrous
metals. More accurate and authoritative data can be used if available. Data base of
applied software can be used.
Material properties for pipe shall be extracted from Piping Material Specification of
the project. Also material of insulation shall be extracted from the project insulation
specification. Data base of applied software can be used.

Analysis Classification
All lines shall be reviewed for flexibility, stress and load calculation by experienced
judgment, simplified or comprehensive methods.

Experienced Judgment Method

Lines in this category require non-mandatory investigation. This method comprises the
lines which can be judged by relying upon normal experiences, approximate methods or
practices of engineering design team. The piping systems in this scope need no formal
analysis of adequate flexibility.

02

6.2.2

Simplified Method
This method comprises the piping systems in which adequate flexibility and suitable pipe
supports shall be provided by computer analysis (Computer analysis is mandatory). But
providing of documented output for presentation to employer is not mandatory.

6.2.3

Comprehensive Method
Lines falling into this category are to be brought specifically to the attention of the stress
engineer. Computer analysis shall be generally used where there is any concern over
the flexibility of a piping system and in particular where accurate calculations of values
are required. (e.g. equipment nozzle, support, spring loads and displacement vector).
Documented output shall be prepared for the piping systems which are covered by this
method. Beside, any piping system which does not meet the criteria in paragraphs 6.2.1
and 6.2.2, comprehensive method of stress analysis by computer shall be utilized.

02

File Ref. : D:\POLY PROPYLENE DOCUMENTS\Specifications\STRESS ANALYSIS\PGE-SA-000-PD-SP-0015-02.docx

6.2.4

Stress analysis grade classification

The lines of a piping system shall be classified into three (3) categories from stress
analysis point of view including size, temperature, origin and destination of lines. These
classifications, according to severity of operating condition and methods of analysis, are
categorized as:
A Grade Experienced judgment method.
B Grade Simplified method.
C Grade Comprehensive method.
Documentation for lines of Grade C is required as described in 6.11.1.
In addition to below judgment of grades, computer aided analysis shall be considered for
any other system/line that stress engineer feels necessary for stress check.

02

6.2.5

Lines grade classification

Computer analysis (B and C Grade as shown) shall be applied for lines with the
following conditions:
Category C piping as:

Any line or equipment (e.g. re-boiler connected to tower directly,) which needs to have
comprehensive calculation recognized by stress analysis engineer.
Lines in high pressure service the pressure is in excess of that allowed by ANSI B16.5
class 2500# rating for the specified design temperature and pressure.
Lines in category M fluid service as per ASME B31.3 with NPS 2.
