6. Procedure
6.1 General
Piping system may be subjected to many diverse loadings. Stress Analysis, calculation
of reaction loads due to thermal expansion, contraction in piping system, stress caused
by pressure, weight of pipe, weight of piping components and fluids, equipment
vibration, external occasional loadings such as wind and seismic loads, settlement, frost

In the cases in which the flexibility of the under examination piping system is found to be
insufficient to absorb the imposed primary and secondary loads (e.g. weight and thermal
loads respectively), those methods listed below shall be adopted, in the following order
of preference:
Introduction of restraints.
Changing in piping routing and inserting a proper pipe loops.
Introduction of spring supports (variable or constant) to the piping system.
Utilizing the reinforcing pad in pipe branches and nozzle intersection with equipment.
Utilizing of proper type of metallic or elastomer expansion joints, victualic, and dresser
type coupling, metal and elastomer hoses, ball type joints and all other in-line flexible
connectors. (Senior stress engineers approval is mandatory).
Employing of cold spring (senior stress engineers approval is mandatory).
The following basic data shall be considered through stress analysis according to the given
value and references:
6.2
The allowance of displacement stress range (SA) is the limit of stress calculation
referred in ASME B31.3 Para. 302.3.5.
Value of stress intensification factor (SIF) for elbows, bends and tees which is used

considered like steam out, stand by and etc). For checking the nozzle load of rotary
equipment, air cooler and fired heater, normal operating temperature shall be used .For
designing restraints, difference between the design temperature and the value at the
temperature expected during installation shall be used.
The value of expected temperature during installation is 21C.
In cases that operating temperature is less than sun metal temperature (80 C) for non
insulated piping, the temperature difference between sun metal and installation (21C)
temperature shall be considered as metal temperature for calculation.
The maximum operating temperature is indicated in piping documents (P&ID, line list).
If the maximum operating temperature is not specified in the aforesaid document,
calculation temperature shall be considered as the variation temperature ( 30C) plus
normal operating temperature.

Lines in hydrocarbon service may occasionally be steamed out and pipe stressing must
take into account the resulting rise in temperature. Note that the equipment is also
steamed out (Refer to line classification list for steam out temperature and pressure).
6.3.2.6 Steam Tracing
Tracing can cause the temperature of the line to rise above normal during periods when
the line is empty or no flow occurs. Piping design must take this into account when
calculating movements.

It shall be noted that nozzle flexibility, tank settlement and uplift of self anchorage tank
shall be taken into calculation.
The combined effects of settlement and nozzle rotation may suggest supporting the
piping on springs. However, before pursuing this course a check should be made on the
possibility of the line becoming drained during a normal operation cycle. If this should
occur the supporting springs may impose an excessive upward force on the tank nozzle.
Where the line can only be drained when the tank is out of service, instructions should
be issued for the springs to be locked before draining.
6.6.9

vendor data.
Standards and required data shall be requested from vendor in a right time of project.

The risk of flange leakage shall be evaluated according the methods defined here after.
These methods are applicable for steel welding neck type flange assemblies under the
simultaneous effect of the internal pressure, the axial load and the external bending
moments.
Flange leakage verification shall be performed for following conditions:
Critical lines with rating 600# and above.
Lines with rating 300 # and OD 16 and above
All sour service and category "M" service lines with operating temperature higher
than 180C

If the sum of the equivalent pressure calculated in this way and the operating pressure
of the piping does not exceed the maximum pressure allowed by the rating of the flange
joints as per ASME B 16.5 or ASME B 16.47, the applied external loads are acceptable.
In case of oriented tees, Stress Intensification Factor (SIF) are higher due to the angle of
connection between branch and header
For forged connection, this SIF shall be calculated as per equation below (header and
branch element):
h = 4.4 (T / r2)
iO = 0.9 / [h2/3 (sin )3/2]
il = (3 iO / 4) + 0.25

Foundation Settlement
Differential settlement must be taken into account in piping stress analysis if it is a
concern in project. The total differential settlement figures supplied by the civil
department should include an initial amount occurring during construction and testing
and this may be ignored. In such cases it should be clearly noted that piping connections
must be made after hydrostatic testing of the equipment where this occurs.
Special attention shall be given to piping design for the foundations supporting heavy
Permanent loads like piping connected to storage tanks nozzle.
Where the piping lacks built-in changes of direction, large reactions or detrimental
overstrain may be encountered, the flexible hose is a useful device to adding flexibility to
the piping system.
Glass Reinforced Plastics pipes (GRP)
Piping stress analysis for GRP pipes shall be performed according to BS 7159 or UKOOA
codes and this general specification with the below characteristics given by the GRP pipes
Supplier:
Ea Axial Modulus of Elasticity
Eh Hoop Modulus of Elasticity
h/a Poissons ratio of the strain in axial direction resulting from a stress in the hoop
direction
G Shear Modulus
SH Allowable Stress
