My Statement of Purpose
I intend to pursue and apply for the full time basis Ph.D. Program in the Mechanical Department, Lovely
Professional University for the fall of 2015.

Motivation and Purpose

My main motivation of further study and research in Engineering has a touch to do with my early undergraduation study and influence of my supervisor in post-graduation study.
Moreover, from the curiosity of fact that, technology is driven by need and inventors often have an uncanny skill
of resolving situations with their innovations. But what separates engineers from mere innovations is the ability
to recognize the importance of sustainable technological solutions for the future. Although many of our needs
and predicaments remain the same, the answers keep changing with time. My ability to be proactive in this
matter makes me stand apart. In addition to finding out how a machine operates, Ive always been interested in
energy source aspects and monitoring the incipient limitations occurring within present technology. This urge
was further strengthened my supervisor, Mr. Raja Sekhar Dondapati, during my M.Tech. Thus, he has shown
and makes me recognize the scope for improvement and also motivated me to look beyond the conventional
functionalities of any present energy distribution systems through the field of Applied Superconductivity and
Cryogenics.
I have read your program information description and feel the Educational Psychology Program should be
suitable to me. The purpose of my applying for a Ph.D candidature is precisely to acquire the depth of
knowledge and sophistication of methodology to attain a superior level of expertise by way of strict training and
progress in the field of research.

Academic Background
Ever since my school days, Ive been interested in theoretical and frameworks in Mathematics and Sciences,
which drive the physical world. I did make a project of Water Clock for the Inter School Science Exhibition.
Also, Ive received good percentage of marks both in my 10 th and 12th board examinations. Engineering, at this
point of time seemed as a natural extrapolation of my abilities and interests. The amazing task of moving the
world is the monopoly of energy resources, so I made Mechanical engineering my choice. I successfully cleared
the Assam Combined Entrance Examination (CEE) 2010, with a rank of 2133 in CEE, and got enrolled in the
discipline of B.Tech-M.Tech Mechanical Engineering with specialization in Thermal Engineering at Lovely
Professional University, Phagwara, India. The sole reason for admission in LPU, was due to financial assistance
in terms of scholarship provided by the university.

Undergraduate Study
Apart from the study of core Mechanical subjects in B.Tech, I was also involved in a project called Split Hybrid
Electric vehicle (SHEV) along with my colleagues for Auto Expo 2014, India. The foundation of the project was
laid on the concept of reducing pollution and less consumption of fuel. The vehicle had the ability to run both on
fuel and electricity switching vice versa depending on the urban and highway platform. Moreover, in the 5 th
semester of integrated program, I was assigned by my supervisor to guide the B.Tech students to accomplish
their capstone project called Oxygenated Fuel Assistance system (OFAS). The purpose of the project was to
study the Performance, Emission and Cost Analysis of Hero Honda Passion, with and without out assistance of
pure oxygen cylinder. And outcome of the project were very good in terms of efficiency and reduction in
pollution. However, in economic terms, it was costly.

Internship
At the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL), Bongaigaon Refinery, India I worked as a Trainee in Central
Work Shop (CWS), Production and Utilities (P&U) and Engineering Service Department. It also involved the
phase of Planning Section and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) to aware about the flow of information to
and from the field on the activities planned and executed respectively. Also I was made aware of the 7 pillars of
TPM for improving productivity by making processes more reliable and less wasteful. The training period
helped in solidifying the basics of focused improvement, planned maintenance, initial control, education and
training, autonomous maintenance, quality maintenance and safety, hygiene & environment. The industrial
training enabled me to appreciate the various techniques developed in this field of Oil Refineries and the impact
cutting edge research has in developing better technologies.

Post - Graduate Study
Having enrolled in the Thermal Engineering, Under the supervision of Mr. Raja Sekhar Dondapati, and coguide Mr. Gaurav Vyas, my masters thesis involved investigating the variations in properties of supercritical
oxygen (SCO) to be used in High Temperature Superconducting (HTS) Applications. The thesis was based on
the fact that, when oxygen is exposed to different temperatures and pressures above critical temperature, it alters
the phase and behavior of fluid acting as both liquid and vapor. This project coupled with study of M.Tech in
Thermal Engineering allowed me to develop an understanding of flow pattern of supercritical fluids as an
integral part of the sustainable energy resource development. The sole purpose for use of SCO in
Superconducting Magnetic Energy Storage (SMES) systems was for the cooling of superconducting magnets, to
retain its superconductive properties.
During my course of Engineering, I have not limited myself to a particular area of Mechanical Engineering. I
have secured a CGPA of 7.39 out of a scale of 10. Also, my keen interest to stay abreast with the evolving
method of energy resources has helped me in gaining an appreciation for languages such as AutoCAD, Pro E,
Solid Works, ANSYS, Origin Pro 8, COMSOL Multiphysics.

Research
While continuing my thesis work, I have also been able to publish two research papers under the expertise
guidance of my supervisor Mr Raja Sekhar Dondapati. I am outlining below my academic contributions:
A novel approach to estimate the thermophysical properties of pure oxygen at the supercritical region
to be used in SMES, IJAER, Vol. 10,No.54, p-ISSN:0973-4562, e-ISSN: 1087-1090, June 2015, pp.
48-54
Numerical Model to Estimate the Thermo-physical Properties of Oxygen at Critical Pressure to be used
in SMES, IOSR-JMCE, e-ISSN: 2278-1684, p-ISSN: 2320-334X,Vol. 5, April 2015, pp. 07-13.
Moreover, A research paper entitled Development of correlation for thermo-physical properties of supercritical
oxygen to be used in SMES has been accepted for publication r in 4 th International Conference on Power and
Energy Systems (ICPES-2014), 21st-23rd November, 2014, Singapore.

Plan for professional study and my future career

My undergraduate and post-graduate engineering degree has left me with keen issue of appreciation for the need
for evolution of engineering & technology. A PhD degree will further equip me with intellectual depth and
breadth along with greater practical knowledge to face the professional and leadership challenges, I will face in
my career. After a good deal of self-evaluation, Ive decided to pursue my PhD. This decision naturally followed
after carefully considering my academic background and areas of work.
I strongly believe that I can match the high standards of your profile and contribute fruitfully to the research
endeavors at under your guidance. I would be grateful to you, if I am accorded to pursue my higher study.
Yours Sincerely,
Aal Arif Sarkar
