2. COURSE OBJECTIVES
To discuss the development of the diffusivity equation for flow of
fluids in the reservoir and its solutions of interest, as well as the
mathematical basis for pressure analysis methods of well testing.
3. COURSE SUMMARY
We begin with the derivation of the diffusivity equation for slightly
compressible fluid flowing in homogeneous-acting reservoirs. We
then present some of the more useful solutions to the fluid flow
equations, emphasizing the exponential integral solution. In addition,
we discuss the use of dimensionless variables, the radius of
investigation concept and the principle of superposition. We conclude
with a discussion of the van-Everdingen-Hurst solution to the
diffusivity equation.
4. COURSE DETAILS
Definition of reservoir formation, hydrocarbon reservoir
and drainage area of a well.
1.2 Classification of flow systems according to: geometry of
flow, type of fluids, homogeneity and spatial variation of
permeability, rate of flow of the well, and reservoir
boundaries.
1.3 Typical flow regimes according to the rate of change of
pressure with respect of time. Pressure and rate profiles.
2. Darcys law and applications.
2.1 Darcys equation for linear and radial flow, for oil and gas
and any direction of flow and in Darcy units.
2.2 Sign Convention
2.3 Limitations
2.4 Darcys Equation in Field Units.
2.5 Steady-state flow systems: inclined beds, permeability
variation and skin effect concept.
3. Diffusivity Equation.
3.1 Derivation of The Diffusivity Equation: Fundamental
physical principles; Diffusivity equation for radial, singlephase flow of a liquid with small constant compressibility;
Diffusivity equation for radial, single-phase flow of a gas;
