Exterior Coatings,
Adhesives and Sealants
his years feature on exterior architectural coatings, Self CrossLinking Resin Coatings Offer Siding Manufacturers an Edge
(page 31) was authored by Bob Cregg, industry director Building
Products, Sherwin-Williams Product Finishes. Cregg writes that as a result
of a rebound in single family construction, building products manufacturers are ramping up production to meet the increasing demand. In turn,
manufacturers must deliver a quality product that provides value to both
builders and the homeowners.
According to Cregg: Such is the case with exterior building products such as cement composite, wood, vinyl and fiberglass siding, where
coating integrity is critical. The manufacturer/supplier relationship has
become a partnership with suppliers helping manufacturers improve
their finishing techniques and processes, respond to customer demands
for a wider range of colors than ever before, meet higher performance
standards and increase throughput.
Cregg said that new coatings that utilize a cross-linking resin meet the
finishing challenges siding manufacturers face. Most importantly, they offer savings in terms of true applied costs the price per square foot covered
through a number of performance enhancements.
The Adhesives and Sealants Update (page 33) was written by
the newest member of the Coatings World team, Catherine Diamond.
Manufacturers interviewed for this article reported that the market for adhesives and sealants is on the rise thanks to healthy automotive and construction industries. According to Uwe Bankwitz, Head Corporate Target
Market Sealing & Bonding at Sika AG, the market for adhesives and sealants grew about two to four percent, depending on location.
Bankwitz said that there are two markets that offer the most opportunity for growth: transportation and construction. For Sika, transportation (including automotive) and building/construction (new construction,
refurbishment, infrastructure improvements) offer the most opportunities
for growth, especially after moderate recovery of these markets in North
America and Europe. Participation in the stronger growth in emerging
markets in Asia and Latin America are of key importance to Sika and are
reflected by investments in new factories.

private companies and non-governmental organizations in the continent have found water
storage tanks the best alternative to maintain
water supply in the water-stressed African
countries hence laying the foundation for the
expansion of the continents water tank coatings market.
The demand for water tanks is understandable. Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest number of water-stressed countries than any other
continent in the world today, with more than
340 million people lacking access to a reliable
source of water. It is estimated that between 75
million and 250 million people in Africa live in
water stress areas posing a threat of displacement of up to 24 million to 700 million people
as their condition turns to be unliveable for
lack of water.
The
United
Nations
Environmental
Programme (UNEP) said in a few years from
now almost all sub-Saharan countries will be
below the level at which water supply is enough
for all. Even worse, most of them will be in a
state of water-stress or scarcity.
The looming water scarcity and desire
by individuals, industrial establishments
and institutions to mitigate current water
shortages and looming scarcity has not only
opened up a huge market for quality water storage tanks but also enhanced certain
technologies that could be utilized by the
stowage solutions.

Coatings World: How did the market for OEM auto coatings
fare in 2014?
Jean-Marie Greindl: For PPG overall, 2014 has been strong
through three quarters. The third quarter saw net global
sales of $3.94 billion for our entire business, up four percent
versus the previous year. PPGs regional earnings expansion
was largest in Europe, which advanced 17 percent despite the
uneven regional economic performance. Automotive original
equipment manufacturer (OEM) coatings grew by high-single-digit percentages, with corresponding growth in all major regions and exceeding the global industry growth rate of
about 3.5 percent.
CW: What regions offer the most opportunity for growth for
auto OEM coatings?
Greindl: Our results have shown significant growth in China,
which as the worlds largest market offers us the greatest opportunity for growth in the auto OEM coatings industry. Both
North American and European regions saw auto OEM coatings
production grow by low-to-mid single digit percentages.
CW: What specific technologies/products does PPG offer to the
auto OEM market that sets it apart from the competition?
Greindl: As automotive manufacturers incorporate lighter
metals into vehicles to make them more fuel efficient, PPG
is developing its ZIRCOBOND pre-treatment systems. The
product reduces the formation of sludge by-products by at
least 80 percent compared to conventional zinc-phosphatebased pre-treatment systems. In the past three years, PPG
has installed 97 ZIRCOBOND pre-treatment lines around
the world, plus 12 additional lines in automotive plants.
The ZIRCOBOND pre-treatment system also consumes less
heat than zinc-phosphate lines, which can enhance energy
and cost savings. In addition to this, ZIRCOBOND can save
the average assembly plant 16 million gallons of water per
year. For general products, we launch 400 colors every year

Final Coat
Flying Colours Aviation repainted a QantasLink 717 airplane with a basecoat-clearcoat coatings system by PPG Industries aerospace business that delivered a quickly-achieved, smooth, high-gloss finish.
The DESOTHANE HD/CA 9008 basecoat-clearcoat system by PPG Aerospace gave Flying Colours Aviation a really successful paint job, said Rich Wilkinson, sales manager at the PPG Aerospace application support center (ASC) in Tullamarine,
Victoria, Australia.
High-solids DESOTHANE HD/CA 9008 basecoat-clearcoat systems have a heavily-pigmented basecoat that provides more
color with less paint than traditional coatings, saving material, weight and application time. The clearcoat provides extended service
life, improved buffability and a smoother surface that is easier to clean, the company said.
Flying Colours Aviation painted the QantasLink 717 airplane at its Townsville Airport paint facility, making the aircraft the first
to be painted withDESOTHANEHD/CA 9008 basecoat-clearcoat system in Australia. CW
