his years feature on exterior architectural coatings, Self CrossLinking Resin Coatings Offer Siding Manufacturers an Edge
(page 31) was authored by Bob Cregg, industry director Building
Products, Sherwin-Williams Product Finishes. Cregg writes that as a result
of a rebound in single family construction, building products manufacturers are ramping up production to meet the increasing demand. In turn,
manufacturers must deliver a quality product that provides value to both
builders and the homeowners.
According to Cregg: Such is the case with exterior building products such as cement composite, wood, vinyl and fiberglass siding, where
coating integrity is critical. The manufacturer/supplier relationship has
become a partnership with suppliers helping manufacturers improve
their finishing techniques and processes, respond to customer demands
for a wider range of colors than ever before, meet higher performance
standards and increase throughput.
Cregg said that new coatings that utilize a cross-linking resin meet the
finishing challenges siding manufacturers face. Most importantly, they offer savings in terms of true applied costs the price per square foot covered
through a number of performance enhancements.
The Adhesives and Sealants Update (page 33) was written by
the newest member of the Coatings World team, Catherine Diamond.
Manufacturers interviewed for this article reported that the market for adhesives and sealants is on the rise thanks to healthy automotive and construction industries. According to Uwe Bankwitz, Head Corporate Target
Market Sealing & Bonding at Sika AG, the market for adhesives and sealants grew about two to four percent, depending on location.
Bankwitz said that there are two markets that offer the most opportunity for growth: transportation and construction. For Sika, transportation (including automotive) and building/construction (new construction,
refurbishment, infrastructure improvements) offer the most opportunities
for growth, especially after moderate recovery of these markets in North
America and Europe. Participation in the stronger growth in emerging
markets in Asia and Latin America are of key importance to Sika and are
reflected by investments in new factories.

Benjamin Moore Unveils 2015 Color Trends

Benjamin Moore released its 2015 Color

of the Year Guilford Green HC-116, a
stunning silvery green that complements
both modern and traditional styles in a
seamless manner, according to the company. In addition to unveiling the Color
of the Year, Benjamin Moore introduced
Color Trends 2015, a curated palette of
23 colors consisting of beautiful green,
blue, blush and berry shades that can
transform a space. Benjamin Moore said
it continues to be the influential leader in
paint color for homeowners and designers by forecasting colors and combinations that are truly livable and practical
for every style and home.
We chose Guilford Green as our
2015 Color of the Year because it can

be the hero or the highlight in any room,

enhancing the architectural identity of a
space, said Ellen ONeill, creative director at Benjamin Moore. Guilford Green
is the perfect thread to connect nature,
spaces and interiors with color schemes
that signify fresh energy and growth.
Taking cues from trends in fashion, textiles and the arts, the Benjamin
Moore Color Studio team spotted the
common thread of balanced palettes
and a design sentiment that continued
to reflect a sense of optimism. Guilford
Green harmoniously complements the
Benjamin Moore Color Trends 2015 palette, which also celebrates the concept of
monochromatic colors using warm,
cool, dark and light layers of the same

hue in the home. With a monochromatic color scheme throughout a floor

plan, each room can have a very distinctive look making it almost imperceptible that there is a single hue at work.
Exploring monochromatic colors allows
for a fresh approach in designing a room
as a single hue, color combinations are
endless. Employing various sheens creates another layer of texture in a space.
The Color Trends 2015 collection features four color families green, blue,
blush and berry. The bold, more saturated
hues represent an evolution from the soft
pastels that comprised the brands Color
Trends 2014.
Homeowners are ready to experiment with color and are more confident

with making unique design choices for

the home, added ONeill. Within each
color family in the Color Trends 2015
palette we offer a spectrum of hues to
play with and experiment to find whats

Institute of Technology (MIT),

presented the results of a joint
research program on new rheological measurement technologies that can be applied to sprayable
paints at the Society of Rheologys 86th
annual meeting in Philadelphia which is
attended by global rheology experts who
study the deformation and flow of materials, including paints.
The Axalta and MIT team developed
a new technology to analyze and quantify the behavior of complex fluids during spray applications. During the paint
spray application process, droplet particle
sizes and distributions can be determining factors for the quality and appearance
of the final paint. The new technology is
designed to help improve paint sprayability during the application process, which
should result in an improvement in the
surface quality and visual appeal.
Historically, industry researchers used
high shear viscosity (HSV) or Capillary
Breakup Extensional Rheometer (CBER)
to assess capillary thinning and the filament formation dynamics of paint. This
can often be related to the droplet formation process during paint spray application, but can be limited as a result of
relatively low relaxation times observed
in commercial paints, explained Houze.
Together, with my Axalta colleagues
Mike Koerner, John Moore and the MIT
team, we developed a jet-based rheometry approach to analyze a samples behavior at very high-strain rates that can
determine relaxation times of waterborne
paints down to about 60 microseconds.
This technique is known as RayleighOhnesorge Jetting Rheometry (ROJER).
Air-assisted atomization in spraying of complex liquids is a key process
in many industrial applications, but the
effects of some rheological properties on
the process are still poorly understood,
said Dr. Gareth McKinley, MIT School
of Engineering Professor of Teaching
Innovation and Associate Head for
Research. The new technologies that we
developed together with Axalta can connect the rheological fingerprints of a material to industrial applications, such as
sprayability of paints.
At Axalta, it is important for us to

work with top academic institutions like MIT to continue

to explore the science of coatings, said Panos Kordomenos,
Axaltas senior vice president and chief
technology officer. This collaborative
research integrates expertise, coating applications and rheology that will help us
continue to make advances.

and Neeltje Tretter Professor

of Chemistry at University of
California-Berkeley, was the
honored speaker at the Axalta
Distinguished Lectures Series sponsored
by Axalta Coating Systems and hosted
by the Department of Chemistry at the
University of Pennsylvania. Professor
Yaghis lecture titled, Reticular Chemistry
and the Design of New Materials, explained how his group created metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with extended
crystalline order, and the subsequent design of new materials for clean energy
storage and complex separations.
According to Professor Yaghi, the logical synthesis of extended solids has been
a long-standing objective in chemistry.
The fundamental problem has been that
linking molecular building units into extended structures often led to amorphous
or poorly crystalline solids. The research
indicated that the problem is now solved
with the design and development of
MOFs. The major conceptual advance is
the use of metal-oxide clusters as anchors
for joining organic linkers into robust
crystalline open frameworks. This new
approach is being applied to help develop
materials with controlled porosity and
pore-functionality. It has led to the design of less dense crystals, the highest surface area materials, and a large number
of truly porous crystals. This chemistry
has found applications in the storage of
methane, separation of carbon dioxide,
and catalysis.
This years lecture continues a
long-history of collaborations with the
University, a top academic institution, and
is part of Axaltas commitment to foster
innovation and the advancement of coating sciences, material sciences and chemistry, explained Panos Kordomenos, Axalta

of Chemistry at the University of
Pennsylvania helps to enable world-class
scientists to share their research and perspectives with students, faculty members
and Axalta researchers in an academic setting, Kordomenos added.

Market Reports

Frost & Sullivan Analyzes

Southeast Asian Oleochemicals Market

Southeast Asia has become a hotbed of

activity in the oleochemicals production
space. This is due to a combination of
factors: the abundant availability of raw
materials, escalating consumer preference
for vegetable-based products and low
manufacturing costs.
New analysis from Frost & Sullivan,
Southeast Asia Oleochemicals Market,
finds that the products manufactured
in Southeast Asia are mainly basic
oleochemicals that include fatty acids,
fatty alcohols and glycerin. In 2013, the
revenue of the fatty acid market was
$1.26 billion, fatty alcohol was $471.6
million and refined glycerin was $61.1
million. In 2020, these revenues are expected to increase to $2.74 billion, $1.03
billion and $131.9 million, respectively.
All over the world, the demand for
fatty acids and fatty alcohols is swelling in end-user industries such as cosmetics, food, plastics, and rubber, said
Frost & Sullivan Chemicals, Materials &
Food consultant Sharmila Subramaniam.
Exports of these two derivatives are
also on the rise as the products offered
by many regional participants, especially those in Malaysia and Indonesia, are
competitively priced and highly valued in
the global market.
However, the markets are pegged back
by the cost of feedstock. The intensifying
demand for vegetable-based raw materials has had a substantial bearing on the
profit margins of manufacturers, as raw
materials account for 80 to 90 percent of
the costs of fatty acids or fatty alcohols.
Consequently, the frequent fluctuations
in the prices of vegetable oils, such as
palm oil and coconut oil, ripple into the
oleochemicals market.
Oleochemicals manufacturers can
manage price volatility and even stoke value creation by integrating their business
with upstream plantations. Integration
of raw materials and production in the
supply chain will not only reduce production cost but ensure that oleochemicals

manufacturers have a constant supply

of raw materials without compromising
their bargaining power over the suppliers.
As global consumer preference for
natural and environment-friendly products continues to rise, demand from
markets such as China, India and the
United States will drive the Southeast
Asian oleochemicals market, concluded
Sharmila. The market will also benefit
from emerging applications for all three
derivatives fatty acids, fatty alcohols and
glycerin in the areas of biolubricants,
green chemicals, bioplastics, biopolymers, antioxidants and epichlorohydrin.
Southeast
Asia
Oleochemicals
Market is part of the Chemicals Growth
Partnership Service program. Frost &

with market participants.

World Fluorochemical
Demand to Reach 3.8
Million Metric Tons
Global demand growth for fluorochemicals is forecast to accelerate, rising 3.8
percent per year to 3.8 million metric tons
in 2018. Above average growth in higher
value products will help drive increases in
value demand more than seven percent
annually to $25 billion. Environmental
regulations will continue to be the strongest force acting on the industry, shaping
demand in both positive and negative
ways.
While regulations and consumer concerns have reduced demand for some
fluorine-based products, particularly
fluorocarbons, they have also opened

20 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

up opportunities for products such as

newer fluorocarbons with low global
warming potential. China is the largest
fluorochemical market in the world and
produces over half of global output, benefitting from its strong position in the raw
material fluorspar. While fluoropolymers
are the smallest product in volume terms,
they account for a disproportionate share
of market value due to their higher average prices. These and other trends are
presented in World Fluorochemicals,
a new study from The Freedonia Group,
Inc., a Cleveland-based industry market
research firm.
The fluorocarbons market remains
the most dynamic sector of the fluorochemical industry for two reasons: first,
the evolving regulations aimed at protecting the ozone layer and reducing global
warming, and, second, a sharp contrast
in the outlook between developed and
developing countries, said analyst Ryan
Sullivan.
In developed countries, the phaseout
of HCFCs is nearly complete, with most
end users switching to HFCs. However,
even HFCs now face restrictions due to
their global warming potential (GWP),
with new laws in developed countries expected to limit future demand.
China will continue to be the largest
and one of the fastest growing markets
for fluorochemicals, accounting for over
40 percent of global volume demand in
2018. Only India will experience faster
growth, although from a much smaller
base. Developing countries in general
are expected to see faster growth in fluorochemical demand as healthy economic
growth drives rising commercial and
household refrigeration penetration rates
and countries increasingly adopt more
advanced manufacturing technologies
that employ fluoropolymers. Demand
growth in North America will rebound
due to healthy advances in the automotive industry and an improving housing
market in the United States. CW

Demand for Dispersions in Europe Driven

by New Technologies and Expanded Capacity

Demand for
dispersions
additives has
been growing
faster than the
coatings market
itself.

by Sean Milmo
European Correspondent
milmocw@rodmanmedia.com

he dispersions segment is continuing to be one of the most active in the

European coatings sector in the development of new technologies as well as investing
in mergers and acquisitions and expansions in
production capacity.
Demand for dispersions additives has
been growing faster than the coatings market
itself. Coatings producers want more effective dispersions to reduce resins and pigments costs.
Also, efficient dispersions help coatings manufacturers to comply with tighter
European environmental regulations, especially in areas like emissions of volatile organic
compounds (VOCs).

24 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

Another driving force is the rising need

among coatings manufacturers for more individualized products to meet the specific needs
of their customers.
One of the best ways to provide tailor-made
coatings is to reformulate dispersions. This
is an increasing trend in Europe among SME
coating manufacturers and specialist dispersion
producers whose market strategy is to respond
quickly to new requirements in the market.
This has divided the European dispersions segment into large players, including big dedicated dispersion and dispersion
agent producers and multinational coatings
producers often backward integrated into
raw materials, and SMEs with a more sharply targeted approach.
In the process of developing more effective
technologies, dispersion producers have had to
gradually extend the scope of their operations
further downstream.
November 2014

Europe International Coatings Scene

This is particularly the case with
research-based speciality chemical companies who are well established in the development and production of dispersions.
They are the ones with the expertise in
key field like polymers, rheology and surface technologies.
As they extend the range of their activities, a major dilemma for dispersion
companies is how they avoid becoming
competitors with their own customers because what they provide can be close to
being complete coatings products.
However, they have little choice but
to shift downstream. They themselves
are facing competition from new entrants into their market for dispersion
and dispersion additives which is looking
increasingly attractive because of its relatively high growth rates.
The global coatings and printing inks
markets in general, and particularly of
waterborne and high solids solvent based
systems are growing with above-average
speed, said Stefan Silber, senior vicepresident and general manager for coating additives at German-based Evonik
Industries AG, one of Europes leading
dispersants producers.
In response to this strong growth, dispersion companies have been broadening
their portfolios to meet the major trends
in the European and global markets.
These include the need for greater pigment stability and higher color yields, low
emissions of volatile organic compounds,
and reduction in production costs such as
for milling.
Companies want strong positions
in pigment and colorant dispersion,
as was reflected in the recent merger in the tinting sector of Chromaflo
Technologies, Ashtabula, Ohio and CPS
Color Colorants of Finland. This initiative in vertical integration brings together
Chromaflos expertise in pigment and
chemical dispersions with CPSs knowhow in colorants for architectural and
industrial coatings.
We see a clear trend to rationalization in coatings manufacture with more
and more customers working with tinting or full mixing processes, said Silber.
These put very high demands on dispersion results, pigment stabilization and

compatibility. Our portfolio of cuttingedge dispersants for all technologies and

pigments fits very well to this trend.
Evonik is close to completing the
building of a new polymer dispersants
plant at Essen, Germany, which will triple its global capacity for the products.
The dispersants from the unit, scheduled to start up in the first quarter of
next year, increase color intensity and
colorant yield, while their viscositylowering effect lowers production costs
by maximizing pigment concentration
during dispersion.
Many of the companys wetting and
dispersant additives, sold under the Tego
Dispers label, can be applied to both
waterborne and solvent coatings as well
both organic and inorganic pigments.
Altana, another German-based speciality chemicals company with a large
business in disperants, effect pigments
and other coatings raw materials, which
last year took over Rockwood Holdings
rheology additives operation, has developed a pigment stabilizer for use in aqueous and solventborne system.
The technology, which has won the
companys annual innovation award, is
comprised of a comb copolymer which
enables this universal application to be
made through a single additive.
Arkema, a French-based international
speciality chemicals company, has developed a pigment dispersion technology,
called Bumper, to meet the demand for
additives to lower the titanium dioxide
(TiO2) content of coatings. The technology can also be used to make dispersions
for TiO2 alternatives like zinc oxide and
barium sulphate.
Bumper is a very efficient spacer
technology for inorganic pigments like
TiO2,explained Fabienne Drouel, marketing communications manager at
Arkemas Coatex coating additives business. It has helped curb costs when
TiO2 has been expensive. That is not the
case so much today because TiO2 prices
have weakened so weve been looking at
ways to use the technology to add value
to other kinds of pigments.
BASF, the worlds largest chemicals
company, is able to exploit its production
of a wide range of raw material to run

November 2014 www.coatingsworld.com

both a coatings operation and a separate

business for dispersion and pigments. It
has been able, for example, to concentrate on developing solutions for energycurable coatings along much of the value
chain-- from speciality monomers, binders through to UV-curable dispersions.
The R&D resources of SMEs are, on
the other hand, becoming stretched as
they endeavour to satisfy the demand
among customers, particularly in the industrial and protective coatings market,
for individualized products. These usually have to be produced in small quantities based on one-off formulations
developed in house rather than on standardised systems from outside.
SMEs are wanting to take full advantage of their flexibility by being able
to provide customized products in small
batches, explained Felipe Wolff-Fabris,
business unit manager of the European
Centre for Dispersion Technologies, Selb,
Germany. A lot of the larger coatings
and dispersion producers tend to have to
provide standardised products because
they do not want to change processes just
to make a batch of a few tons,
The European Centre for Dispersion
Technologies, which opened earlier this
year as a research and technology transfer institution, is run by SKZ, a German
research and quality assurance services
company with help from funds from the
German government.
It provides assistance to companies,
mainly SMEs in coatings, plastics, nanocomposites and other sectors, in areas
like development of materials, processes
and analytical methods.
Coatings and other companies now
have a much greater choice of dispersion agents to develop their own formulations, said Wolff-Fabris.
But
developing formulations for small batches is expensive both financially and in
the use of resources. SMEs in particular
need support which is why weve set up
this centre.
The setting-up of the center, which
was suggested by the coatings and other
formulation industries, highlights the extent of innovation in dispersions taking
place at all levels of the coatings sector
in Europe. CW

Water Shortages in Africa Drive Up Demand For

Water Storage Tanks and Coating Technology
by Shem Oirere

Campaings to
have reliable and
constant water

are driving up
water storage
tank slaes, which
has tanslated into
surging coatings
demand.

emand for water storage tanks in

African to alleviate high level water
shortages has created a growing market for protective coatings that ensure high
performance and lasting durability of the
stowing equipment.
Campaigns to have reliable and constant
water supply sources are driving up water storage tank sales which has translated into surging
coatings demand as consumers seek to counter the impact of violent weather, temperature
swings and constant immersion on the tanks
that could be made of concrete, steel or plastic.
These water storage tanks are susceptible to
corrosion, which can be averted through quality coating systems. The coatings should be
resistant to chemical attacks, have lowest absorption rates and high retention characteristics
to enable users cut down on maintenance costs
and extend the lifecycle of the water tanks.
According to Dallas Flinch, the director of
Industrial and Marine Coatings at The SherwinWilliams Company, by design, all potable water storage tanks are inherently susceptible to
corrosion attack.
The primary function of a coating is to
create a barrier to prevent chemical compounds
and moisture from contacting the substrate.
While an electrolyte is not always present in
this area, preventing water ingress is essential
for protection. In addition, the coating must
have good adhesion, and chemical and abrasion resistant properties, as well as the ability
to withstand ultraviolet radiation.
Flinch said for the interior tank applications, the approach to corrosion control is
different from the exterior one. The strong
electrolyte formed by the stored water creates a vehicle for ion transfer and current
flow within the micro structure of the steel.
However, coatings can be used to interrupt
this process and prevent corrosion damage.
Equipped with investments and the knowledge on water tanks technology, governments,

26 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

private companies and non-governmental organizations in the continent have found water
storage tanks the best alternative to maintain
water supply in the water-stressed African
countries hence laying the foundation for the
expansion of the continents water tank coatings market.
The demand for water tanks is understandable. Sub-Saharan Africa has the highest number of water-stressed countries than any other
continent in the world today, with more than
340 million people lacking access to a reliable
source of water. It is estimated that between 75
million and 250 million people in Africa live in
water stress areas posing a threat of displacement of up to 24 million to 700 million people
as their condition turns to be unliveable for
lack of water.
The
United
Nations
Environmental
Programme (UNEP) said in a few years from
now almost all sub-Saharan countries will be
below the level at which water supply is enough
for all. Even worse, most of them will be in a
state of water-stress or scarcity.
The looming water scarcity and desire
by individuals, industrial establishments
and institutions to mitigate current water
shortages and looming scarcity has not only
opened up a huge market for quality water storage tanks but also enhanced certain
technologies that could be utilized by the
stowage solutions.
November 2014

Africa International Coatings Scene

For example, rain harvesting is gaining momentum as the most appropriate
technology in ensuring water supply in
water scarce areas. Communities, including pastoral tribes in the continent are
gaining from rain harvesting technologies
dominated by various types of tanks such
as ground level tanks, circular tanks, elevated tanks, potable and wastewater storage among others. All these tanks require
quality external and internal protection
of the substrate from attack and also to
ensure high drinking water quality.
The World Agroforestry Centre said
contrary to the perception that Africa
is a dry area it actually has more water resources per capita than Europe.
Unfortunately, the center said much of
Africas rain comes in bursts and is rapidly swept away or is never collected.
UNEP also said technologies such as
rainwater harvesting provides an alternative to water shortages in Africa and that
if Widely deployed, rainwater harvesting can act as a buffer against drought
events for these people, while also significantly supplementing supplies in cities
and areas connected to the water grid.
Frequent droughts in Africa, inadequate or dilapidated water supply
networks because of low level public
investment has triggered the increasing
demand for alternative water withholding capacities.
Several companies with operations
in Africa are striving to boost their sales
and enhance their bottom lines by taking
advantage of this huge demand for water
storage and quality water tank coatings.
For example, Australia-based Heritage
Water Tanks, which has been exporting a
huge range of water tanks to Africa for
years, said the continent is an emerging
continent and due to the remoteness of
various communities and environmental
differences experienced throughout the
landscape, has potential for quality water storage tanks.
The company said with the availability of water and especially the availability of potable water being a major
problem in Africa, the region needs water storage solutions that enable water
users to store the commodity at an affordable realistic price.

Recently, the company said it has been

approached by several mining companies
in Africa to supply them with waste water
settlement tanks, fire fighting water tanks
and commercial size potable water storage tanks. The supply order will ensure
Heritage Water Tanks sustains its wide
reach in the continent and also supports
the growing tank coatings market.
UK-based Balmoral Tanks is another
company that is already reaping from
Africas demand for water storage tanks
and modern tank coating technology.
The company recently completed a
2500 cubic meter Fusion Bonded Epoxy
Coated Steel Fire Water Storage Tank in
North Africa for a world renowned power and gas producer according to the a
statement on the companys website.
The Fire Water Tank, which is 17.16m
diameter x 12.06m high, had its roof,
shell and floor supplied in Balmoral
Tankss premium Fusion Bonded Epoxy
Coating, which the company explains is
a factory applied dry powder coating
process utilizing a DuPont brand epoxy.
In East Africa, Roto Moulders Limited,
one of Kenyas biggest plastic tank manufacturers said it is taking advantage of the
huge market for water storage facilities to
grow its sales and revenues.
I saw opportunity in the plastics industry given that at that time there was
only one manufacturer of plastic tanks
in the region, said Heril Bangera, in an
earlier interview with Kenyas Business
Daily newspaper.
He said the company has grown
from making four tanks a day in 1989
to producing 500 tanks every in various
brands and sizes, a confirmation of the
growing East African market for water
storage technology.
The demand for elevated and groundlevel water storage tanks is also on the
surge in West Africa where Accra-based
Polytanks Ghana has recently launched a
new range of tanks as the region transforms water tank storage as an integral
part of the water distribution systems.
Polytanks, a member of the Mohinani
Group, which is the leading manufacturer of plastic water storage tanks in
West Africa, has launched the Blow
Moulded Tank Technology (BMT) in

November 2014 www.coatingsworld.com

the plastic water storage manufacturing

sector, according to Ashok Mohinani,
executive director of the Mohinani
Group. He said the new type of tanks
can store up to 1,000, 2,000 and 3,000
liters of water and also comes in a wide
range of colors.
Polytanks will continue to use pioneering technologies to constantly upgrade its product range which include
water storage and septic tanks; dustbins;
plastic pallets; poly kiosks and many
more, he said during the recent launch
of BMT.
In South Africa, SBS Water Systems
said demand for storage solutions is increasing as municipal councils, mining,
commercial and fire protection sectors
seek reliable water supply sources.
Although initially the company was a
distributor of imported tanks, it recently
opened a new production line in South
Africa, cutting lead times and expenses
on imports.
According to Mava Gwagwa, SBS
Tanks new business and key accounts
manager, the company is currently having projects in Zimbabwe, the DRC,
Sierra Leone, Malaysia and the U.S.,
with mining companies and municipalities topping the list of clients.
Municipalities have realized that we
supply a steel tank that is, in almost all
situations, better than the conventional
concrete tanks, said Gwagwa.
On the municipal side, this is absolutely critical. If you consider how often
water is at the core of the service delivery
protests, a municipality can truly address
the issue of water provision easily and
economically with SBS Tanks.
Although no statistics are immediately
available, the number of companies in the
business of water storage tank manufacturing and supply is huge and so is the list
of firms involved in production and supply of high performance waterborne and
high solids coatings systems to protect the
tanks from corrosion, the lead cause of
leakages and water supply interruptions.
The water-scarcity in Africa, and the
campaign to circumvent this challenge,
promises to support growth of the water storage tanks and the tank protective coatings. CW

new, region-wide paint and coatings association in Latin America,

the Federacin Latinoamericana de
Fabricantes de Pinturas, or Latin American
Federation of Paint Manufacturers, has
formally launched with a headquarters in Mexico, and officers in Brazil and
Argentina. Latinpat, as one source labels
the new organization, is headed by Javier
Maldonado Moctezuma, the general director
of PSI Pinturas, based in the city and state
of Puebla.
The Latin American paint market is estimated at $10 billion, and growing a percentage
point or two faster than regional GDP, which is
forecast by the World Bank to strengthen from
1.9 percent in 2014, to 2.9 percent in 2015 and
3.5 percent in 2016.
Out goal is to slowing draw in all the
countries of the region from our starting
base of six signatories. For those countries
without a dedicated paint and coatings organization, we hope to help them launch one,
with the ultimate goal of cooperating with
international paint and coating organizations, said Maldonado. Also a past president of Mexicos Asociacion Nacional de
Fabricantes de Pinturas y Tintas (Anafapyt),
Maldonado is a champion of small business, and also served as the president of the
Red Mexicana de Franquicias, or Mexican
Franchise Network.
In promotion of small and medium paint
and coatings companies in Mexico, Maldonado
pointed out that of Anafapyts total membership of some 300 companies, 80 percent are
small and medium in size. Further, he noted,
half of those companies had the capability to
export products, out of the more than 600 million liters they produce annually.
During his tenure as president of Anafapyt,
he opined that the proposed merger of
Sherwin-Williams and Comex would not
have a negative impact on the Mexican paint

and coatings industry overall; he welcomed

the potential of a greater flow of technology
into the country.
Among follow-on goals are to help countries establish more global norms for contents,
including materials like lead, water-based products and other elements, said Maldonado.
Beyond that, technical training, the Care program, logistics, and statistics are areas where
we can cooperate, he said.
The first country signatories to the
Latinpat organization are: Argentina, Brazil,
Colombia, Ecuador, Mexico and Uruguay.
Thus far, Brazil home of the Associacao
das Fabricantes de Tintas (Abrafati) and
Mexico have the strongest national paint associations. Assisting Maldonado as the first
president are vice presidents from Brazil and
Argentina. The location of the federation will
travel with the president until a permanent
headquarters is selected, he said.
Maldonados company PSI Pinturas is a fullportfolio manufacturer of paint and coatings
products that distributes through a network of
32 franchises thus far. We have an aggressive
program in place to reach 500 franchises over
the next five years, says Maldonado. These
franchises would primarily serve the Mexican
market but could also serve some neighboring
countries through master franchise networks,
he added.
Among brands PSI produces in the market leading acrylic architectural line are: PSI;
Betavin; Royal Tone and Royal Paint; Sella

Self Cross-Linking
Resin Coatings Offer Siding

near normal levels by the fourth quarter of 2015. The Joint

Centers for Housing Studies of Harvard University sees double

digit gains in remodeling through 2014.
Building products manufacturers are ramping up production to meet the increasing demand. To remain in consideration, however, manufacturers must deliver a quality
product that provides value to both builders and the eventual

homeowners. And, as building material manufacturers seek to
increase throughput to meet customer and consumer needs,
they have become more reliant on their suppliers to help them
gain a competitive edge.
Such is the case with exterior building products such as
cement composite, wood, vinyl and fiberglass siding, where
coating integrity is critical. The manufacturer/supplier relationship has become a partnership with suppliers helping
manufacturers improve their finishing techniques and processes, respond to customer demands for a wider range of
colors than ever before, meet higher performance standards
and increase throughput.

New Homes: Customized From The

Outside In
The days of cookie-cutter tract housing, where builders offered prospective homeowners a choice of five or six primary
colors and matching trim, are long gone. Todays homebuyers
want their homes to reflect their taste and personality, and
want their homes exterior to be just as durable and beautiful
as the interior.
As consumers tastes have changed, so too have the attitudes of the builders and remodelers, many of whom now
take risks in both color combinations and material combinations that include stone and varieties of siding. When combined strategically and seamlessly, the blended materials
create a work of art.
And while the desire for more colors and different substrates can mean increased business for siding manufacturers,
this also presents a challenge: higher costs. Traditional coatings, such as conventional latex machine finish and mid-line
coatings, require multiple coats with low millage per coat
to achieve many desired colors. Additionally, different substrates require different coatings for optimal performance,
thereby requiring a manufacturer to have several finishing
lines. Multiple coats and multiple lines increase labor and
material costs.

Self Cross-Linking Coating Solves Multiple

Siding Finishing Issues
New coatings that utilize a cross-linking resin meet the finishing challenges siding manufacturers face. Most importantly, they offer savings in terms of true applied costs the
price per square foot covered through a number of performance enhancements.
Savings start with consistent performance across all substrates including wood, fiberglass, and cement fiberboard. This
allows manufacturers to streamline their operation and finish
on the same line, thereby reducing equipment and inventory
costs. This eliminates the need to stock different coatings for
each substrate.
Self cross-linking resin coatings also address the challenges
associated with color. Rather than requiring a multiple-coat finishing operation, the coatings afford a thicker application from
seven to nine mils, providing sufficient coverage in a single coat.

Even light colors such as whites and pastels can be achieved in

one coat, saving production time.
Some coatings manufacturers offer coatings systems that indicate dual coats are necessary to extend the warranty of the
product. Color consistency is enhanced by using mixing systems
that allow coatings to be blended in formulas that use exact
weights as opposed to volume measurement. Color retention is
improved, meaning a wide range of colors can be offered, including bold, dark shades.
Better adhesion to an ASTM-best rating of 5A means that
self cross-linking resin coatings provide a high quality finish
coming out of the drying oven. The finished product cures faster,
reducing racking time where the material rests to develop a hard
cure and increasing throughput for the manufacturer. Siding
manufacturers can slip-sheet and package quickly, decreasing
packaging and shipping time.

Installation And End User Benefits

In addition to providing manufacturing benefits, the cross-linking resin coatings reduce the potential for issues in the field for
both installers and homeowners. For example, the enhanced adhesion properties increase durability and limit common on-site
handling issues. Color matching for touch-ups can be achieved
easily through color-matched paints available through the coating supplier.
To reduce heat build-up in darker colors, heat-sensitive substrates such as vinyl siding may be finished with solar reflective
tints. These specialized colorants minimize heat absorption, and
can improve color retention up to 25 percent over standard finishes. (Note: This will still vary by color and the location where
the siding is installed.)
Self cross-linking resin coatings can also bring peace of mind,
as both the coating manufacturers and siding producers are
more likely to offer a warranty based upon these technologies.
Depending on the manufacturer of the coating, warranties may
cover adherence, cracking, peeling, blistering and, in some cases,
pro-rated paint/labor costs. For siding manufacturers, installer
and end user benefits translate into customer satisfaction and
fewer callbacks.

Partnerships That Pay Off

Just as homeowners rely on builders and remodelers to help
them express individuality through innovative products, building product manufacturers are seeking individual attention and
support from suppliers to create a positive impact on the manufacturers bottom line.
Suppliers providing value-added services from training that
enhances the skills of coatings line personnel and line audits that
lead to efficiency enhancements to access to a team who offers
expertise a manufacturer may not have in-house (technical specialists, color and design specialists, and design engineers) can
help reduce the overall applied cost of the finish.
Such partnerships, when combined with innovative products like cross-linking resin coatings, offer a winning proposition for everyone. CW

Adhesives & Sealants

This market is on the rise thanks to healthy automotive and construction industries.
Catherine Diamond, Associate Editor

he economic downturn of 2008 was notoriously rough

on the automotive and construction industries. Plunging
sales figures and frightening projections were well documented (often). What was less known to the general public,
however, was the intrinsic link between these markets and the
adhesives and sealants markets. Adhesive and sealant manufacturers suffered alongside Ford and Chrysler, and as such, they
are now enjoying a well-deserved, healthy resurgence.
According to Dr. Uwe Bankwitz, Head Corporate Target
Market Sealing & Bonding at Swiss company Sika AG, the market for adhesives and sealants grew about 2-4 percent, depending on location.
Mature markets in North America and Europe grew about
2 percent, he said. It grew about 3 to 4 percent in Latin
America and about 5 percent in Asia Pacific. Medium-term, a
global growth of about 3 to 4 percent is expected.
November 2014

Bankwitz said that there are two markets that offer the most
opportunity for growth: transportation and construction. For
Sika, transportation (including automotive) and building/construction (new construction, refurbishment, infrastructure improvements) offer the most opportunities for growth, especially
after moderate recovery of these markets in North America and
Europe. Participation in the stronger growth in emerging markets in Asia and Latin America are of key importance to Sika
and are reflected by investments in new factories.
Henkel, a global provider of adhesives, has also felt the effects
of the economic recovery. As such, its Adhesive Technologies
business unit posted solid organic sales growth in the second
quarter and a very strong increase in adjusted return on sales
to 17.5 percent.
Organically (i.e. adjusted for foreign exchange and acquisitions/divestments), we increased sales by 3.7 percent compared

FEATURE Adhesives & Sealants

to the prior-year quarter. This was achieved through increases in
both volume and price, the company said.
Adjusted operating profit (EBIT) remained at the level of
the prior-year quarter. Adjusted return on sales (EBIT) grew very
strongly, by 0.6 percentage points to 17.5 percent. Increasing
prices for direct materials adversely impacted gross margin; this
was partially offset by the strict implementation of our measures
to optimize the portfolio and improve production and supply
chain efficiency.
Overall, for the first half of the year, Henkels organic sales in
the Adhesive Technologies business unit grew between January
and June 2014 by 3.9 percent, outpacing the global economy.
In our report for fiscal 2013, we published guidance for
fiscal 2014 indicating that we expect to achieve organic sales
growth of between 3 and 5 percent. In line with our 2016 strategy, we furthermore expect a slight increase in the share of sales
from our emerging markets, said Lisa Kretzberg, spokeswoman
for Henkel Adhesive Technologies.
For the adjusted return on sales (EBIT), we forecasted an increase to around 15.5 percent, and for adjusted earnings per preferred share, we anticipate a rise in the high single-digits (2013:
4.07). We confirm our guidance for fiscal 2014, she added.
Henkel said it achieved its largest increase in sales in the
General Industry business. The Vehicle Repair and Maintenance
and General Manufacturing steering units significantly contributed with double-digit growth. The Adhesives for Consumers,
Craftsmen and Building business also posted positive sales
growth. Despite the difficult political situation in parts of
Eastern Europe, sales to the building industry were solid overall, Kretzberg said.

Increasing Costs, Regulations

Despite tremendous gains in both the global and local economies, the adhesives and sealants market is still largely at the
mercy of raw material costs, which seem to be climbing ever

higher, and government regulations, which are plentiful in an

international market.
Bankwitz said that Sika has dealt with rising raw material
and energy costs by simply going back to the drawing board.
Although the cost/performance ratio of adhesives and
sealants has always been a key aspect for Sika, he said,
raw material scarcity and higher prices triggered new
thinking and innovations in product development and manufacturing processes.
He added that VOC and environmental regulations are major drivers for product adaptations. Sika recognizes stronger
regulations as an opportunity and always tries to stay ahead of
the market or even driving it by introducing new adhesives and
sealants that have, for example, a much lower monomer content
than previous generations of products and before any regulations are imposed.
Kretzberg said that Henkel has adapted a multi-pronged approach to offsetting the increase in raw material costs. Through
selective price increases, continued strict cost discipline and efficiency improvements in production and supply chain, we were
able to largely offset the effects on gross margin of substantially
higher promotion activities and the slightly higher prices of direct materials.

New Products and Areas of Focus

In highly competitive markets such as automotive and construction, suppliers are constantly asking themselves what they can
do to differentiate themselves from their competitors. Bankwitz
said that Sika has introduced several new products to the market in order to do just that.
Its new series of construction sealants, SikaHyflex, is designed to meet the increased requirements high performance
sealants have to fulfill today.
They adhere to all kinds of substrates and have an extremely high movement capability of up to +100/-50% in order to

Henkel Acquires The Bergquist Company

Expanding adhesive products through Asia Pacific
Henkel, a global provider of adhesive, sealants and functional coatings, signed an agreement last month to acquire The Bergquist
Company, a privately-held and leading global supplier of thermal-management products for electronics applications.
With this acquisition which is in line with our global strategy to invest in complementary leading technologies we are strengthening our position as a global market and technology leader, said Jan-Dirk Auris, Executive Vice President Adhesive Technologies.
Bergquists track record in developing unique thermal-management solutions fits with our commitment to provide best-in-class
customized solutions.
According to Henkel, Bergquists strong business presence in the Asia Pacific region will further advance its production and R&D
capabilities and help deliver greater sustainable products to the region.
Chanhassen, Minneapolis, USA-based Bergquist has five production sites in the US and one in China. In fiscal 2013, it generated
sales of around 130 million euros. The company has about 1,000 employees.
Last year, Henkel Adhesive Technologies increased its APAC presence further by opening the worlds largest adhesives plant:
Dragon Plant. In the second quarter of fiscal 2014, the Henkel Adhesive Technologies business unit generated a 17.5 percent return
on sales, with Asia Pacific markets posting the highest growth.

absorb large movements, he said.
SikaHyflex sealants exhibit an exceptional durability due
to their outstanding UV and weathering resistance. Sika strives
for sustainable building construction and therefore focuses on
long-lasting solutions. SikaHyflex sealants ensure tight building
envelopes permanently and thus contribute significantly to the
reduction of heating and cooling energy of buildings.
Bankwitz said Sika focuses on its customers processes in order to determine its focus.
Our focus is always to create value for our customers with
adhesives and sealants that enable them to improve their processes, save time, allowing new ways of construction (e. g. light
weight designs in the automotive industry) and the use of new
construction materials, he said. The focus in developing new
construction sealants and adhesives lies specifically on durability, improved indoor air quality, wider application windows (e.
g. lower/higher temperatures), improved adhesion without pretreatment, compatibility with other typically used materials or
better resistance to various chemicals.
For its part, Henkel has launched several new products
through its Adhesive Technologies business unit. Kretzberg said
that these tailor-made solutions are based on comprehensive
expertise in products and technologies, Henkels global presence, and close partnerships with customers.
Loctite 4090 is a hybrid adhesive that combines the key
features of structural and instant adhesives: bond strength
and speed. This powerful combination provides high impact
resistance, high strength bonding on a variety of substrates,
and high temperature resistance, making it versatile enough
to solve a wide range of design and assembly challenges, the
company said.
Loctite TAF is designed to improve design flexibility and performance of electronic devices while enhancing user comfort.
The flexible heat-absorbing film from the Loctite TAF series
lowers the processor and housing temperature of mobile devices
by more than 3 degrees Celsius.
Loctite Threadlocker Sticks as formulated as wax-like,
semi-solid adhesives packaged in a self-feeding stick applicator.
Loctite 248 and Loctite 268 Threadlocker Sticks are designed to
provide robust cure even on oil-contaminated or inactive metals
like stainless steel. Only Henkel offers these convenient stick
threadlockers for use in different maintenance, repair and overhaul applications, the company said.
Working in conjunction with Ford Motor Company, Henkel
developed Loctite 5189, an anaerobic gasketing sealant for
highly stressed engine joints. With exceptional flexibility, the
company said Loctite 5189 meets the requirements of the on
line blow-out test and thus eliminating the cost of extensive
manual rework and offering robust sealing for high volume engine manufacturing.
Kretzberg added that research and development is a huge
focus for Henkels Adhesive Technologies business unit. In the
first six months of the fiscal year, research and development
expenditures amounted to 207 million (adjusted for restructuring charges: 206 million), she said. Sixty percent of the

R&D expenditures account for the Adhesive Technologies business unit.

Relative to sales, Henkels research and development expenditures increased slightly versus the same period in the previous
year. The ratio was 2.6 percent (adjusted: 2.6 percent).
A substantial part of our research and development activity
takes place in the areas of polymer and interface chemistry, biotechnology, materials science, surface treatment, process technology and new packaging. These activities are important for
all Henkel business units, Kretzberg said. The development of
innovative products is of key importance to our business model.
The research and development strategy described in our Annual
Report 2013 has remained unchanged.

Global Growth Strategies

Both Sika and Henkel have recently acquired companies to further strengthen their global product offerings and services.
In 2013, Sika acquired Everbuild - UKs largest independent
manufacturer of sealants, adhesives and construction chemicals
- as well as Akzo Nobels Building Adhesive business.
While the first acquisition especially provided good access
to the distribution market in UK, he said, the latter improved
Sikas position in interior finishing with floor and wall covering
solutions and tile adhesives.
Recently, Henkel acquired The Bergquist Company (see box),
and also signed a joint-development agreement with U.S.-based
Vitriflex, Inc. in May.
Founded in San Jose, California in 2010, Vitriflex has developed a unique ultra-barrier film technology that utilizes a
proprietary roll-to-roll technique to deliver high-performance
barrier films in an easy-to-integrate form factor. Barrier films
protect electronic components against moisture and oxygen ingress. This invention offers the first time ever cost competitive
flexible barrier film technology for the display market. Under
the terms of its agreement with Henkel, the ultra-barrier film
innovator will work with Henkel technology experts to develop
customized, integrated barrier film products for flexible displays.
According to Henkel, the agreement was the result of a comprehensive scouting process which began in 2012 to anticipate
future market needs and applications. Since then, the company said, the systematic and strategic evaluation of new business opportunities has become a critical element in driving the
companies global innovation leadership. CW

PPG Reports on the

OEM Auto Market

Coatings World recently had the opportunity to interview Jean-Marie Greindl, Vice
President, Automotive OEM Coatings, EMEA, and President, PPG EMEA.

Coatings World: How did the market for OEM auto coatings
fare in 2014?
Jean-Marie Greindl: For PPG overall, 2014 has been strong
through three quarters. The third quarter saw net global
sales of $3.94 billion for our entire business, up four percent
versus the previous year. PPGs regional earnings expansion
was largest in Europe, which advanced 17 percent despite the
uneven regional economic performance. Automotive original
equipment manufacturer (OEM) coatings grew by high-single-digit percentages, with corresponding growth in all major regions and exceeding the global industry growth rate of
about 3.5 percent.
CW: What regions offer the most opportunity for growth for
auto OEM coatings?
Greindl: Our results have shown significant growth in China,
which as the worlds largest market offers us the greatest opportunity for growth in the auto OEM coatings industry. Both
North American and European regions saw auto OEM coatings
production grow by low-to-mid single digit percentages.
CW: What specific technologies/products does PPG offer to the
auto OEM market that sets it apart from the competition?
Greindl: As automotive manufacturers incorporate lighter
metals into vehicles to make them more fuel efficient, PPG
is developing its ZIRCOBOND pre-treatment systems. The
product reduces the formation of sludge by-products by at
least 80 percent compared to conventional zinc-phosphatebased pre-treatment systems. In the past three years, PPG
has installed 97 ZIRCOBOND pre-treatment lines around
the world, plus 12 additional lines in automotive plants.
The ZIRCOBOND pre-treatment system also consumes less
heat than zinc-phosphate lines, which can enhance energy
and cost savings. In addition to this, ZIRCOBOND can save
the average assembly plant 16 million gallons of water per
year. For general products, we launch 400 colors every year

with innovative properties

and effects.
CW: What new technologies is PPG working to
launch into the auto OEM
market (for example: selfhealing
coatings,
selfcleaning coatings and other
smart coatings)?
Greindl: There are new
materials that PPG is using and developing in response to developments
in vehicle manufacturing,
and that can help address
sustainability and cost
concerns in the manufacturing process.
PPG has also introduced new manufacturing processes to
enable increased cost efficiency for automotive manufacturers, as 65-70 percent of all energy used in the auto manufacturing process occurs in the paint shop. Our new waterborne
B1:B2 process reduces both the manufacturing footprint
and energy consumption as it removes the baking phase of a
typical paint process.
CW: What is PPGs plan for growth in 2015 and beyond?
Greindl: For EMEA, we will further strengthen our presence in Central Europe. The Middle East is also growing and
Africa and Turkey offer many growth opportunities for us.
The paint market is still very fragmented so there are growth
opportunities in developing regions, but also in acquiring
technological know-how.
The industry is constantly changing and it is being driven by
the manufacturers. As a result, PPG always needs to be a step
ahead because when the manufacturers want it, we need to have
it ready for them to use. CW

Industry News

it increases the durability of

plasticizing units and injection
molds and helps reduce production stoppages due to service
and maintenance.
The new material meets UL 94 requirements for the V-0 flammability class
at wall thicknesses as low as 0.4 millimeters. Its thermal ageing resistance has
been considerably improved over that
of well-known glass fiber-filled polyamide grades, the company said. The new
Ultramid A3U42G6 is especially well
suited for use at higher temperatures.
The new flame retardant system
shows no migration effects and thus
ensures component surfaces of higher
quality. It also contains no halogen or
antimony components. This allows favorable smoke density and toxicity values to
be attained and also complies with the
WEEE and ROHS directives.
Reinforced with 30 percent glass
fibers, Ultramid A3U42G6 possesses
the good mechanical properties typical of polyamides, and can be marked
by laser, when colored black. This new
grade is especially suitable for connectors and thermally stressed industrial automation applications such as
switchgears and contactors. Effective
immediately, the material is available
in commercial volumes and with extensive supporting data.

have tried to improve the quality

of anti-corrosive coatings by using modified nanoparticles.
Results of the research will
reduce the loss caused by corrosion in
various industries, including power plant
installations, oil reservoirs, marine installations and oil and gas pipelines.
The researchers proposed the application of impure zinc oxide nanoparticles
doped with cobalt and manganese to
overcome the corrosion problem in coatings and to improve their quality.
Dr. Bahram Ramezanzadeh, a member of the Scientific Board of ICST,
stressed the necessity of application of
these nanoparticles, In this research,
we tried to create corrosion prevention
behavior in addition to blocking properties by doping zinc oxide nanoparticles with cobalt and manganese. In
addition, their surface was modified
with silane agent to obtain appropriate
distribution of nanoparticles in the matrix of the epoxy coating.
Zinc oxide nanoparticles doped with
cobalt and manganese are able to improve anti-corrosive properties of the epoxy coating through the two mechanisms
of improving blocking and corrosion prohibition properties.
The nanocomposite coating is passing laboratorial tests and can be used as
an anti-corrosive agent on industrial metallic structures to protect them against
corrosion and other damaging environmental threats.
According to the researchers, advantages of the application of the

Final Coat

PPG Aerospace Coatings System

Used by Flying Colours Aviation

Flying Colours Aviation repainted a QantasLink 717 airplane with a basecoat-clearcoat coatings system by PPG Industries aerospace business that delivered a quickly-achieved, smooth, high-gloss finish.
The DESOTHANE HD/CA 9008 basecoat-clearcoat system by PPG Aerospace gave Flying Colours Aviation a really successful paint job, said Rich Wilkinson, sales manager at the PPG Aerospace application support center (ASC) in Tullamarine,
Victoria, Australia.
High-solids DESOTHANE HD/CA 9008 basecoat-clearcoat systems have a heavily-pigmented basecoat that provides more
color with less paint than traditional coatings, saving material, weight and application time. The clearcoat provides extended service
life, improved buffability and a smoother surface that is easier to clean, the company said.
Flying Colours Aviation painted the QantasLink 717 airplane at its Townsville Airport paint facility, making the aircraft the first
to be painted withDESOTHANEHD/CA 9008 basecoat-clearcoat system in Australia. CW

AUSTRALIAN FIRST Flying Colours Aviation

repainted this QantasLink 717 airplane with a
basecoat-clearcoat system by PPG Industries aerospace business, becoming Australias first aircraft
painting company to use the PPG advanced-technology system. Flying Colours Aviation said the PPG
topcoat system was painter-friendly and environmentally-adaptable, providing a high-quality gloss
level. (Photos courtesy of Flying Colours Aviation)
