MYSTERY CASE #1: A Study in Pink
It is scientifically proven that ones childhood will always have a
great impact to his/her life. It will always be connected to how one thinks and
reacts to any situation he/she is in and just like the majority of the
population, my childhood also affects my behavior and thinking. The way I
perceive leadership as an ability of a person to do something or to take
action that he/she thinks is best and right for the benefit of the many without
anyone telling him/her to do that is correlated with my childhood. I think
there are two main reasons for this. First is my position in the family being
the middle child and second is studying in an exclusive for girls school for
half of my life now.

Growing up as a middle child in my family is hard because that

also means that I have to follow and lead at the same time. I am in a position
where I have an older bossy sister to follow and I have a younger spoiled
brother who should look up to me. Also my parents are always reminding me
that I cant just disrespect my sister and always fight with my brother. I have
to understand them both and our positions in the family, so in my
understanding I have to follow my sisters selfish wishes sometimes when
shes not in charge and most of the times when shes in charge for me to
maintain peace. While on the other hand, my brother is younger than me so I

should always understand him whenever he teases and annoy me. I should
be able to control my temper or else both of us will be terribly scolded. Being
the middle child practices me to serve or sacrifice for others. Being the
middle child molded me to become a great follower and an okay leader for
sometimes I still lose my temper and fight with my brother. Being the middle
child made me think that leaders should be understanding and should be
able to make sacrifices when needed for the benefit of the majority.

Studying in Colegio de Sta Rosa for almost half of my life now

means having a literally pink environment for the walls of that school are
painted pink and learning their vision of a having a community that is
morally upright, intellectually competent and service oriented. That is what
the school has been in stilling in the minds of their students and a great
percent of my personality is because of this school. I was taught to stand for
what is right, be academically competitive and have a heart for the poor. My
mind, hand and heart should work together and I believe that it is also a
thing that a leader should be doingwork to be able to synchronize and
coordinate the three.

Being a girl might have influenced my perspective but really it is

because of those two. The only thing I can think of right now that may be
connected of my gender is the way how I want things to be done. I noticed
that my work and my sisters work are more detailed and perfect and effort

is really noticeable compared to my brothers work which is simple and less

time consuming, so I guess that is a gender related issue. Furthermore, I
didnt had a thinking that the world is unfair to women and other genders
until it was discussed in school and they made us think about the issue over
the years. Additionally, in my family, my father is obedient and scared to my
mom. Plus my sister and I are older than my younger brother so the power
and authority are in the hands of the women.
