Open House At Meadow Creek
Fall is around the corner and its that redd time of year
again; not the colour of the leaves, but when the Kokanee
head up local streams and rivers to dig their redds (gravel
nests) and spawn. And Meadow Creek Spawning Channel, at the north end of Kootenay Lake, is a great place to
view them, especially during the free, annual Open House
between 10 a.m. and 2 pm, on Saturday, September 12.
The channel is managed by the Ministry of Forests,
Lands and Natural Resource Operations (FLNRO), and
primarily funded by the Fish and Wildlife Compensation
Program (FWCP). It is located about four kilometers west
of Meadow Creek.
The Open House provides a great opportunity to talk to
FLNRO biologists and field technicians, and view the fish
at (or near) the peak of their run. There will also be information about Grizzly Bears, BearSmart, and the Nutrient
Restoration Program in Kootenay Lake.
Typically there are tens of thousands of spawning
Kokanee to be viewed together each year, said FWCP
Columbia Region Manager, Crystal Klym. And it is
always quite an amazing site.
The 3.3 kilometer looping channel, built in 1967 with
BC Hydro funds to compensate for upstream spawning habitat lost due to the construction of Duncan Dam,
can accommodate several hundred thousand spawning
Kokanee, and millions of eggs in the gravel.
The channel is open to the public every day between 10
am and 2 pm for the duration of the spawning season that
usually runs from late August through to late September.
With the congregating Kokanee, the channel attracts both
Black and Grizzly Bears, and FLNRO may order a temporary total closure to the public if there are high bear
densities during the regular open hours.
The FWCP is a partnership between the Province of BC,
BC Hydro, Fisheries and Oceans Canada, First Nations
and Public Stakeholders to conserve and enhance fish and
wildlife impacted by the construction of BC Hydro dams.

Bootcamp for NonProfits is a one day program

designed for senior leadership and board members in
the nonprofit and charitable sector, with a focus on
arts and heritage organizations. This one day course is
designed to provide foundational knowledge and capacity to identify, plan for and respond to legal issues that

can arise in the managing of a nonprofit and will include

recent changes to the Society Act in BC, and how this will
impact nonprofits. Topics will also include: governance
and accountability, privacy, risk management (including CRA compliance and basic financial accountability),
employment and human resources and will be delivered
by Martha Rans, lawyer and copyright expert, who has
been working with the nonprofit sector for 25 years.
Participants will have an opportunity to explore real
life case studies, identify the distinctions between legal
problems and nonlegal problems, gain knowledge about
how lawyers and the legal system addresses such issues,
relevant legislation governing nonprofit and charitable
organizations, and strategies for risk management.
This workshop is being offered in two separate sessions:
Nelson: September 18, 9 am 5 pm (1 hr lunch break)
Location: Selkirk College Kootenay Studio Arts (KSA)

Lawrence will embark on a regional tour this fall with
stops in Creston, Sparwood, Cranbrook, Kimberley,
Invermere, Penticton, Greenwood, Rossland and Nakusp.
The program will include a screening of the short film and
artist portrait Eyes in the Forest: The Portraiture of Jim
Lawrence made by Needoba. The film has screened at
over 30 festivals and events since its release in 2012, and
is being broadcast on Knowledge Network and Shorts
HD. Lawrence will also have some of his photography on
hand, and the artists hope to engage audiences in a conversation about wildlife and their habitat.
The tour is supported through Columbia Kootenay Cultural Alliance and Kootenay Library Federation, whom

Kaslo GuitarFest 2015
The third annual Kaslo GuitarFest took place in Kaslo

August 17 22. This six day event welcomed seventeen
classical guitar players from Lethbridge, Sawyer OR, the
lower mainland, and the west Kootenays. The faculty
was let by Daniel Bolshoy who teaches at UBC and the
Vancouver Symphony School of Music, and by Marc Teicholz from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
Additional faculty included Nelsons Rita Deane and Luis
Medina and Alec Pearson, both from Vancouver.
Kaslo GuitarFest offers master classes, private lessons,
workshops, and performance opportunities for guitarists of all ages. Just about everyone played in the Guitar
Orchestra, and there were two quartets that prepared
pieces for the final concert. Our youngest participant this
year was an eleven year old from North Vancouver and
the oldest, a local septuagenarian. There were three public concerts during the week which were well attended by
local music buffs and visitors.
The hub of activity was the Heritage Hall at St. Andrews
United Church, and concerts were held in the sanctuary. Some classes spilled over into the Theatre and studio spaces in the Langham Cultural Centre. Out of town
participants were accommodated at the Kaslo Hotel, the
Kaslo Motel, the municipal camp ground and a variety of
B&Bs. They patronized most of the restaurants in town as
well as several retail stores. Several younger students and
some faculty were billeted with local families.
Kaslo GuitarFest was supported this year by the Village of Kaslo, Columbia Basin Trust, RDCK, the Columbia Kootenay Cultlural Alliance and a handful of private
donors who contributed bursary funds.
There will be a Kaslo GuitarFest in 2016. Watch for dates

With the massive amount of media being easily shared

digitally, how do we know whats fair to use or what
others can use of ours? Recent court cases with Canadian
artists emphasize the importance of understanding
copyright. Presenting and accessing creative works
art, photography, video, writing, music is easier than
ever and this has major implications on how we choose
to showcase our creative output. From understanding
copyright and its applications for creators to fair dealing
and fair use, lawyer and copyright expert Martha Rans
will unravel the shifting and evolving legal issues that
need to be a major part of your business as an artist. This
workshop is recommended for all creators: visual artists,
media artists, composers, writers, performing artists, and
photographers and, approximately 2 hours in length.

Major Improvements To
Salmo Park Under Way
Two and a half years after the old structure was removed
for safety reasons, the children of Salmo will enjoy a new
playground in Knights of Pythias Park. The playground
and several other park upgrades totalling $100,000 has
been made possible in part by a grant of $65,000 from
Columbia Basin Trust. Other contributors include the
Regional District of Central Kootenay, Western Financial
and the Village of Salmo.
The children of Salmo will once again have a community playground, said Mayor Stephen White. Thanks
to the dedication and cooperation of residents, council
members, and our chief administrative officer who came
together to secure funding that will allow this community
vision to become a reality. The new playground would not
have been possible without the support of the Columbia
Basin Trust.
Knights of Pythias Park is the main park in the Village of Salmo and the heart of community activity, special events, sports and outdoor gatherings. The planned
improvements will substantially upgrade the facilities,
amenities and grounds of the park to meet the needs of
the community, residents and visitors of all ages.
Specific improvements include the installation of a new
playground, maintenance and upgrades to the ball fields
and dugouts, sand and waterlines to the campsites, concession stand design and the preparation of a master plan
for the park.
This project is a great example of teamwork, said Kelvin Saldern, community liaison, Columbia Basin Trust.
Over 50 concerned community members came together
to form a parks working group, which then worked with
the local chamber of commerce and the village. Even the
children got directly involved by voting on which playground design they prefer.
Upgrades should be complete in the fall of this year.

A Taste Of Nelson

FOMO or Fear of Missing Out is a fun social media

term, but when it comes to pressures on the wallet during
back-to-school time, FOMO looms large for both students
and parents but in a much different way. For students,
its the fear of missing out on trips or activities with their
friends. For parents, its making sure their children dont
miss out on making good decisions. So how are these interests balanced?
With back-to-school approaching, it is a good time
for each party to have a conversation about needs versus
wants, says Mandy Mail, director of student banking at
RBC Royal Bank. FOMO has very real effects on student
budgets, but setting priorities can mean smart choices and
great results.
Mandy offers the following tips to help students meet
both the needs and wants:
Make a list Jot down all of your needs such as books,
food, and transportation plus the sociated costs. Separately,
create a column for wants like clothing, trips, or a new
computer. Pick a few items on the wants list that fit into
your budget and create a savings plan to tackle others.
Evaluate your choices If youre considering a trip over
spring break that maybe doesnt quite fit the budget, weigh
both sides of the equation and make a decision that fits
with your current and future needs.
Shop smart If youre on a budget, one way to avoid
missing out is comparing prices. You may even be able to
add in another want to your wish list. Shop responsibly and
buy based on need, not just want.
Get the most out of your credit card Find a credit card
that suits your needs. For example, there are credit cards
that offer cashback options which allow you to earn cash
on your everyday purchases. There are also cards that let
you earn and redeem points for gift cards and merchandise.

Would you like to play a musical instrument?

The Trail and District After School Band was started to
keep music strong in the Kootenays after most schools no
longer offered music classes. Children from Grade 6 to
Grade 12 can join the band. There is a class for beginners
on Wednesdays from 3:30 to 4:30 and a class for more
advanced students from 4:40 until 5:45. We have a huge
variety of instruments to try out. The cost is $50 per year
for instrument rental and instruction. All classes meet in
the basement of the Trail Alliance Church and classes are
from September to June.
New this year is that we are starting an adult band. This
is for you if you always wanted to play an instrument but
never had the chance, or if you played in school and would
like to brush up on your skills. You do not have to read
music, just come to the class and we will learn together.
Classes are on Wednesday from 1 to 3 at the Trail Alliance
Church. Cost is $50 per year. All classes start September 15.
