Ah, March! Time will tell if this month will come in like a lion
or a lamb - we will soon see. One thing I do know is that even
though you may still think we are experiencing brutal winter
temperatures, now is the time to get out in the garden and get
started for one of our best years yet.
What needs to be done in March? It is important to finish up
your tree and shrub planting this month. You may think it best to
wait for April and May, but realistically the earlier you can plant,
the better it will be for your plants. Planting trees and shrubs
while dormant allows them ample time to acclimate to their new
surroundings before the brutal heat of summer sets in. This tip
goes for transplanting too. March is also a great time to plant
pansies and violas if you did not get a chance to get them in the
ground last fall. It will brighten up your beds and they will last
for a few months until it is time to plant summer color. While
you’re out planting annuals get some herbs, like parsley, started
in your herb bed. Lastly, start your seeds for plants that will be
installed after the last frost date.
Don’t think you are off the hook, in the garden, if you don’t
have any new plants to install, March is also a great time to
finish winter pruning tasks on the plants you already have grow-
ing as many shrubs will begin to leaf out as the temperatures
warm this month. If you want to make any drastic changes to
your shrubbery, March is a good time as you will not have to
live with bare sticks for very long. Many shrubs respond well
to renovative pruning, especially holly, nandina, and aucuba.
Wait until after flowering to prune shrubs that bloom in spring,
these include azaleas and camellias. As far as fertilization goes,
only evergreens and summer flowering shrubs and trees should
be fertilized in March, wait until after flowering to fertilize spring
blooming plants.
Lastly, depending on your lawn type, you should have had
fertilizer and/or pre-emergent herbicide applied to your lawn
by March. If you have a cool season lawn, however, now is the
time to fix any patchy areas with a light top dressing of seed and
compost. You will also want to do a once over on your lawn
mowing equipment. Sharp blades and well working equipment
are a must for a good quality cut.

DECORATING TIPS
Marvelous Master Bedrooms
Karen Hartley is a local interior designer and decora-
tor. As owner of Interiors by Decorating Den, she has
been in business for 23 years. She can be reached at
770-459-9096.
Much more than just the place you sleep, today’s
master bedroom should function as a truly personal in-home
retreat. The private nature of this room invites the indulgence
of sumptuous fabrics, heirlooms and collectibles or an exquisite
oriental rug, which might be in jeopardy in other areas of the
home.
Filling its role as the room’s focal point, the bed may be
dramatically sleek or elaborately festooned. Either way it should
make a strong statement in the room’s interior while imparting
an ambience of luxury and leisure to the homeowners. Nothing
says custom grandeur more than exquisite bed coverings with
lavish accent pillows. And contrary to what every ‘bed-in-a-bag
retailer’ would have us believe, beds with varying frames, box
springs, and mattresses are not standard sizes. Custom design
includes custom fitting. And here’s a gender-friendly tip: men
are usually more comfortable in strong jewel tones rather than
pastels, and with paisleys, solids and stripes rather than florals.
Canopy beds with side curtains were originally designed to
deflect chilly drafts in the days before homes were well insu-
lated. Luckily, we’re now left with the legacy of this exquisite
and intimate bed treatment. The lack of a real canopy bed is
not a deterrent since the bed curtains can be hung from the

COMFORT CORNER • Tighten Blower Bolts and Inspect Fan
• Inspect and Clean or Replace Air Filters
The Benefits of Maintenance • Inspect Condensate Drain and Line
By Ken Borts, KBS Heating & Air, 770-439-6677 • Check Compressor Noise Levels
Spring is right around the corner and we all know what that means. • Inspect Ductwork and Connections for Air Loss
It will soon be time to turn on the air conditioner. Most of the time our
air conditioner is taken for granted. We get hot, we turn it on, and that
is all we think we are expected to do. The air conditioner receives little
or no maintenance unless the unit breaks down. When a system is ne-
glected, there is gradual loss of efficiency, which can add to operating
cost without your knowledge. You tune up your car; why not tune up your
air conditioner?
An air conditioner tune up can reduce operating costs and prolong
the life of your system. Before hot weather arrives schedule a tune up
with a service professional for your air conditioning system. They will
make sure it is operating as efficiently as possible; it has enough refriger-
ant to cool properly, clean & oil moving parts if necessary, and replace
or clean your filter. A clean filter keeps dirt out of the return air duct
vent and out of your system. A dirty filter that causes a 10% reduction in
airflow can increase your operating costs by 11%. When you schedule
this vital service in advance, you can go into the summer season without
worrying about the unexpected breakdowns. Below is a list of some of
the services that are performed on an air conditioning tune up that will
benefit your system:
• Check Refrigerant Temperatures and Pressures
• Measure Compressor AMP Draws
• Inspect Refrigerant Fittings for Leaks
• Lubricate Indoor and Outdoor Motors (where applicable)

“I was exercising and when my heart rate rose, my jaw went numb and I had some shortness
of breath. I called my doctor and saw him the next day. After just a few minutes, he sent me to
WellStar Cardiovascular Medicine. It was a huge shock to find that I needed a quintuple bypass.
But Dr. Cooper and the whole cardiology team really listened and took care of me.
“This was a life-changing experience. I’ve just become chair of the WellStar Foundation’s Cardiac
Community Council. It’s important to me to give back and help raise money and awareness for
the people that gave me my health, and my peace of mind.”
That’s why, every day, across five counties and five hospitals, WellStar is helping people

amount of muscle mass in your body by making your muscles work
harder than they’re used to.
Most people who work out with weights typically use two differ-
ent kinds: free weights (including barbells, dumbbells, and hand
weights) and weight machines. Free weights usually work a group
of muscles at the same time; weight machines typically are designed
to help you isolate and work on a specific muscle.
n
For instance, you can do a squat using free weights by placing a
barbell across the back of your shoulders and squatting down like a
baseball catcher. (Keep your feet flat on the ground and your chest
up.) This type of exercise works and tones multiple muscles, includ-

as well as size.
Powerlifting, competitive weightlifting, and bodybuilding are not
recommended for people in their early teens who are still maturing.
That’s because these types of activity can cause serious injuries to
growing bones, muscles, and joints.
Getting Started
If you’ve started puberty, your body will have begun making the
hormones necessary to help build muscle in response to weight
training. If you haven’t started puberty, though, you’ll still be able to
get stronger — you just won’t see your muscles getting bigger.
Before you start strength training, you should be checked out by
your doctor to make sure it’s safe for you to lift weights.
Any time you start a new sport or activity, start out slowly so that
your body gets used to the increase in activity. Even if you think
you’re not exerting yourself very much, if you’ve never pumped iron
before, your muscles may be sore when you wake up the next day.
And, because of something called delayed onset muscle soreness,
the pain may be at its worst 2 or 3 days after you first exercise.
Before you begin any type of strength training routine, get some
guidance and expert advice. Your coach or trainer can give you
advice on how many times a week you should lift and what kinds
of warm-up and cool-down activities you should do before and
after lifting to avoid soreness or injury. Many trainers who work
at schools, gyms, and in weight rooms are knowledgeable about
strength training, but it’s best to get advice from someone who is a
certified fitness expert and experienced working with teens.
When lifting weights — either free weights or on a machine
— make sure that there’s always someone nearby to supervise, or
spot, you. This person, called a spotter, encourages you and also
can act as your coach, telling you if you’re not doing a particular
exercise correctly. Having a spotter nearby is particularly important
when using free weights. Even someone in great shape sometimes
just can’t make that last rep. It’s no big deal if you’re doing bicep
curls; all you’ll have to do is drop the weight onto the floor. But if
you’re in the middle of a bench press — a chest exercise where
you’re lying on a bench and pushing a loaded barbell away from

in Romans 7 you can contact our fellowship at 678-715-4718 or
www.Romans7.org. Although I have never steered a boat over any body of water, I
sometimes feel as if I am piloting a very small boat on the sea of life!
The storms scare me, as do the relentless waves that beat against
me and push me in directions that I do not choose.
Even when the sea is relatively calm, I am prone to panic when
I see nothing but sea, leading me to conclude there is no land, no
place to find rest and shelter.
And when I compare the size of my vessel to the vastness of the
sea, I become even more worried. Of course, when sudden storms
appear, as they often do out on the sea of life, I become terrified, as
did the persons described in Matthew 8:23-27. When they feared
they were going to perish, despite their best efforts to save them-
selves, they cried out to Jesus to save them.
He immediately asked, “Why are you afraid?”
Indeed, they should not have been, for Jesus was in the boat with
them. All they had to do was to ask Him for help, yet they waited
until their situation became desperate before they called on Him.
They could have spared themselves much anxiety if only they had
called out to Him the moment they felt they were in danger. He had
been there all the time, and He possessed the power to calm the
winds and to still the sea. He was merely waiting for them to recog-
nize Him as their source of help.
That’s true for us, Dear Reader. Although the sea is indeed vast
and our boats are so small, yet—thanks be unto God—there is
One who comes to our rescue the moment we call out to Him.
Actually, He is right in the boat with us. We are never alone. Let’s
remember that!
