12th NAMC INSTRUCTIONS FOR AUTHORS
Andrew E. Geister1 and Fredrick R. Rutz2

Abstract
This document provides instructions in the format that your manuscript should follow, and is
intended to serve as an electronic template for manuscripts submitted to the 12 th North
American Masonry Conference. If you do not use this file as an electronic template, please
refer to this copy for manuscript formatting instructions. Your abstract should be between 150
and 300 words long.
Keywords: Instructions, NAMC, Proceedings, Up to 7 keywords

Introduction
The conference proceedings will be prepared using portable document format (PDF) files of
accepted manuscripts. A printed book of abstracts and a hard copy of the proceedings will
also be prepared. Attendees will receive an electronic copy of the proceedings, and the
printed book of abstracts. Printed copies of the proceedings will be available for an additional
fee.
Authors are required to submit manuscripts in PDF format. Manuscripts must be written in
English and should be formatted for 8.5 by 11 inch (216 x 292 mm) paper. All text, figures,
and tables should be placed within an area of 6.9 in. (177.5 mm) by 9.0 in. (230 mm). On 8.5
by 11 in. (216 x 292 mm) paper, this is equivalent to left- and right-hand margins of 0.8 in. (20
mm), and top and bottom margins of 1.0 in. (25 mm). Although manuscripts will be peerreviewed and may be returned to authors for revisions before publication, initial submissions
should be made in final form assuming that no revisions will be necessary.

Manuscript Length and Size

The manuscript should not exceed 12 pages in length including all text, figures, tables, and
references. Manuscripts should be single-spaced as shown in this template, which is slightly
more than 6 lines per inch (25 mm).

Font
The manuscript title should be Arial 14 point bold uppercase. Manuscript text should be in
Arial 12 point as shown in this document. Fonts for headings and captions are noted below.

Format
Paragraphs
Text should be both left and right justified. Do not indent paragraphs. Place a single blank line
between paragraphs in the same section.
Headings
Major headings should be in upper and lower case, Arial 14 point bold, centered. Provide a
double space between the previous section and the major heading. Subheadings should be
typed in upper and lower case, Arial 12 point bold, italic.
First Page
The manuscript title should be centered on the page starting 2 inches (51mm) below the top
margin to allow space for the conference logo. The title should be in capital letters, Arial 14
point, bold. The authors' names should be in upper and lower case (Arial 12 point), and
should be located below the title with a two-line separation. A short, one-paragraph abstract
should follow, leaving two blank lines between the names of the author(s) and the abstract
heading. The current title and affiliation of the author(s), including full mailing addresses and
email address, should be stated in footnotes at the bottom of the page. A horizontal line
should separate the footnote from the text.

equations by hand. Equations should be referenced with a number shown in brackets, [ ], to
the right of each equation. Both the number and the brackets should be in bold to be easily
seen.

Figures and Photographs

Create graphs and line drawings electronically, and insert them electronically into the finished
document (see Figure 1). Lettering used in figures should be large enough to be readable at
reduced size. Proceedings will be provided to attendees in electronic format and use of color
in Figures is acceptable. Printed copies of proceedings will be available for purchase. Printed
proceedings will be in black and white so please check that colors in Figures will be visible
when printed in grayscale.

Photographs should be high-resolution images or scans and should be inserted directly into
the manuscript electronically. All figures, photographs, and tables must be referenced from
the body of the manuscript and should be inserted near the location where they are first
described, as shown in Figure 1. Place a border having a line size of 1 pt around all
photographs and figures. Provide a caption and Figure number for each figure and
photograph as shown. The words Figure and Table along with the figure and table
numbers should be in 12 pt bold type and should be followed by a period before starting the
caption. Remaining text in the caption should not be in bold type.

Small figures, photographs, and tables

may be inserted adjacent to text provided
a space of in. (13 mm) is provided
