Despite last years massive school fee hikes across

the province and a lack of follow-through by the
NDP government to slash school fees in half thus
far, Strathmore school boards remain consistent
with their four-year trend keeping fees low and
making up cost increases by dipping into reserve
surplus.
As schools welcomed back hundreds of students
this week, Strathmore residents are breathing a sigh
of relief of the school boards decision to not follow
soaring charges observed across Alberta during a
time when oil prices are plummeting and job loss
is frequent.
Certainly we do have cost increases and many
school districts from the province have increased
their fees, said Bevan Daverne, Superintendent of
Schools for GHSD. Our board just felt that given
some of the economics that many families are dealing with right now and their situation is either
uncertain or theyre struggling right now and looking for work, the board just did not feel that this was
the time to look at a fee increase.
Mandatory fees in the Golden Hills School Division, which include resource, transportation, and
supply fees, remained steady, with the Christ the
Redeemer Catholic School Board also leaving their
fees untouched.
Theyve been pretty steady for the past five years,
and we didnt see any need to raise the fees beyond
where they are now, said Scott Morrison, superintendent for Christ the Redeemer Catholic Schools.
In light of the governments platform that they
may be funding schools so they can actually reduce
or eliminate fees, were supportive of that. If the
government says school boards you are to reduce
fees and doesnt fund it, then basically we have to
find the money to make up that shortfall. If they
fund it then thats a really easy situation.
Calgary families, in turn, are forking over up to
$500 per child in mandatory fees to cover transportation, instructional materials, and noon supervision.
Although the provincial government promised to
drastically reduce the fees and remove the noonhour supervision costs, changes have yet to be implemented. However, school boards in Strathmore
were pleased to hear that the government will review funding, not impose education budget cuts,
and fund for growth.
We do know that our funding for this year appears to be effectively sort of the status quo from
last year plus some of the wage increases that were
provincially negotiated are being covered through
our funding as well, said Daverne.

Strathmore bids
farewell to a gem
MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Jerry Bizot wore many hats. He was
a husband, a father, a baker, a pizza
delivery person, a lifeguard, wood carpenter, long-time volunteer firefighter,
delivered the Strathmore Times since
day one, and was most commonly recognized in the town as Santa Claus.
Then last week, surrounded by his
family, Jerry passed away peacefully in
the town he so dearly loved.
I dont think there is probably a person in this town that doesnt know of
him, said Jerrys wife Jean Bizot.
He was a very passive person,
very easy, very laid back, and people
thought the world of him. He was very
much full of life. He just loved being
with people and we talked about moving away lots of times, but he said my
roots are here. Why would I want to
move away?
Jerry emigrated from the Netherlands
when he was only 14 years old. Although he was trained to be a lifeguard,
it didnt take long for Jerry to become
a baker in his parents establishment the Strathmore Bakery, located where
Rockys Bakery is now. It was on those
front steps that then 19-year-old Jerry
had his first encounter with Jean, unaware at the time it would turn into a
50-year-long love affair.
I was about 14 years old and I was
coming up town from school to get
some school stuff and he was standing there with his girlfriend at the time,
and I saw him and said to the girlfriend
that was with me, look at that guy, recalled Jean with a chuckle.
She looked at me and said hes too
old for you and besides youre too
young to be looking at boys. When we
came across the street, I looked up at
him and said, some day you and I will
be married. Well his dad started to
laugh like you would not believe. Jerry
said he never forgot that.
Several years later, Jean proved everyone right. The two married 48 years
ago and were soon joined by their
three children, Gerald, Robert, and
Sandra-Jean. Having worked for Alberta Arches and Beams as a carpenter,
and later at the Calgary Co-op in Strathmore, Jerry became quickly known as
someone who was always willing to

lend a helping hand and provide hugs

when he felt one was necessary.
While he delivered for Boston Pizza upon his retirement and later the
Strathmore Times, it was his Santa costume that had him run all over town.
Jerry was a proud member of this
community, said Mario Prusina, publisher and editor of the Strathmore
Times. From the first day we opened
the Strathmore Times, Jerry dedicated
his time and efforts distributing our paper to various drop locations in town.
He never missed a day of work and
planned vacations so it wouldnt affect
his job. He was a part of the Strathmore Times family.
Even with his tremendous work ethic to the Times, Jerry still found time
to volunteer in the community. Each
year Jerry and Jean would dress as Mr.
and Mrs. Claus and bring the Christmas
spirit to children in our area. He was an
integral part of the Celebration of Light
Christmas Park and the parade. He will
be greatly missed by everyone at the
paper and around town.
According to Jean, Jerrys transformation to Strathmores Santa Claus started
out as a joke. He used to volunteer
with the fire department and pick up
the former Santa Claus with the fire
truck to bring him into town. When the
position became available, he jumped
at the opportunity. From visiting kids
homes, to taking pictures in Kinsmen
Park, Santa Claus made an appearance
for 30 years at the Strathmore Market
Patch, Twins and Triplets in Calgary,
Strathmores Foster Childrens Association, the Lyalta Christmas family concert, and Strathmores Celebration of
Lights sometimes up to 20 appearances a day.
From everyone at the Celebration
of Lights Christmas Park, Jerry (Santa)
will be greatly missed, as Jerry and
Jean were a part of the Christmas Park
when we started seven years ago, said
Rose Hamrlik, president for the Celebration of Lights Christmas Park.
Photos with Mr. and Mrs. Claus drew
hundreds of families to the Christmas
Park on opening nights and Christmas
eve with many presents being given
away. The smiles, laughter, and great
times will always be remembered.
Jerry was 73 years old when he
passed away on Aug. 26.

a death occurs. In some cases, a Medical
Examiner (M.E.) is required.
These cases include accidents, unnatural,
violent, unexplained, or unexpected deaths.
Other situations include if the death is due to
negligence, if the deceased was in custody,
if the death occurred within 10 days of an
operation, if the deceased was under anesthesia
or recovering from anesthesia, or if the death is
occupationally related. There are several more
specific circumstances that require a M.E.s
attention. In the event that an M.E. is required,
they will examine the deceased to find a reason
for the death and notify the family when any
results are found. At any point, the M.E. may
authorize an autopsy without requiring prior
consent from the family of the deceased.

No spike in school fees

Continued from Page 1

From that perspective it was certainly
quite a relief. The other thing that were
very relieved about and happy about
the new government is saying they will
be funding growth. Were very pleased
to see that because were one of the districts in the province that continues to
grow and continues to add classroom
space.
Daverne added that GHSD experienced large growths over the past four
years, recording the largest growth numbers of any board in the province. The
board struggled last year, when they
were barred from accessing their reserves. After the change in government,
the New Democratic Party government
announced a $103 million spending
spree for education, and reversed the
restrictions on reserve funds.
Although fees in Strathmore remain
low for now, the provincial government
indicated a closer look is impending.
Weve heard a number of different
things about fees, and we dont know
where the government will end up

with it, Daverne said. I think there is

some thought given to equalizing some
of those things or removing them. We
dont know. So well just have to wait
and see. The school boards charge those
fees in some ways to make up a little bit
of a shortfall in funding and help cover
costs. It will be interesting to see where
the government goes from here.

Have you had your eyes checked lately? Your

eyes are a great predictor of health problems. Your
optometrist will check the blood vessels on your
retina at the back of the eye. The condition of these
blood vessels could indicate heart disease, high blood
pressure or a risk of stroke. Even in young people, an
eye exam could reveal a health problem in an otherwise
healthy person. Eye exams are good medicine.
The names for new drugs today are getting quite
weird. They have to be unique and be understood in
any language. We are seeing more new drug names
with the letters Q, X and Z in them while W
is seldom used. And the names are getting longer,
many with more than four syllables and often hard to
pronounce.
Insomnia is a symptom not a disorder in itself. It
can be caused by stress, depression, anxiety, restless
legs, caffeine, shift work, pain and even medications.
Its very important to sleep well. If you arent, see
your doctor.
When a parent receives a note from the school that
their child has lice, its not a happy time. Depending
on where you live, your child could be sent home till
the problem resolves. A parents best friend in these
cases is a fine-tooth metal nit-comb with long tines to
comb through the childs hair regularly to remove nits.
Daily or every other day is necessary and sometimes
for two weeks.
For more information about lice and treatment, you
can talk to our pharmacists. Head lice is a common
problem and with a bit of knowledge about the
problem and a lot of patience, it can be controlled. We
can help.

Hussar resident gives Alberta a voice nationally

After Mary Ann Oxtoby

chose to spend time raising
her family, recently participated in the World Karaoke

included renditions of Lady

Marmalade and When Godfearing Women get the Blues,
grabbed the attention of the
judges and solidified her win
on Aug. 23 providing her with
the opportunity
to head to Winnipeg and represent the province.
That hasnt
happened very
much for me
the stars aligned,
everything
worked fine, and apparently
the judges liked what theyd
seen, said Oxtoby. I used to
sing professionally and then
I had my youngest two children 13 months apart and
decided for my sanitys sake
that I needed to quit doing a
few things and that was one
of them. But I always sing at
home, my radio is always on,
and a playlist is always playing.
Oxtoby started singing
at a young age, often influenced by her father who she
said could imitate a variety
of sounds from animals, to
machinery, to opera singers.
Her learning therefore often
consisted of singing the same
notes as the artists in her
CD player or the radio. With
years of training through the

choir in Hussar, Oxtoby attended Red Deer College for

theatre arts performance, and
was featured on the Albertas
Finest album. However, with
the arrival of her
first son soon after, she decided
to focus on her
family and her
singing
career
took a backseat.
Now, over a
decade
later,
Oxtoby took a
chance and sang
in the Cowboys
Star competition where she
met another contestant who
egged her on to tryout for
the World Karaoke Championship a judged competition.
I think its about time, I
think the circuit of performers of karaoke gets a little saturated and Mary Ann hasnt
entered some of this stuff
in a while, and I was really
pleased to see that it was her
who had taken it because she
absolutely deserves it, said
long-time friend and professional singer Abbey Powell,
who met Oxtoby during the
recording of Albertas Finest.
It was nice to see that
maybe politics didnt prevail
for once and someone with
a lot of talent really made it
through to the top, so that

was really exciting to see. Shes a wonderfully committed mom and the community where she lives ... she really is
the backbone of a lot of the activities
that happen within the Hussar community.
Following the passing of her father
to colon cancer and losing her grandfather a few days later, Oxtoby decided
to start up a music lesson program and
rebooted the dance club in her community. Despite logging hours of overtime
in volunteer work, she also visits senior
homes and lodges and performs where
she performs.
I got my voice from my dad and my
grandpa was always front row and centre of every single show that Ive ever
done, Oxtoby said. Once the dust settled from losing both of them and we
figured out what the new normal was,
I said I think I want to do that more.
Thats something that I do quite a bit
and I like doing. They are the most appreciative audience members out there,
because theyre so happy to have somebody to take them back to those old
songs.
Having recently returned to the studio to lay down some tracks, she is also
working on her own songs, of which
she currently has a hand full.
Oxtoby will be heading to Winnipeg
to represent Alberta, along with the
provinces top male singer, at the 2015
KWC Canada National Karaoke Championships Grand Finale on Sept. 18-20.
Canadas top male and female performers will then represent Canada against
more than 40 countries in Singapore
during the World Finals on Nov. 20-22.

To the Editor
It was pointed out to me that my comments about
the fire departments honour was a rather extreme
comment. I was very upset but my problem was definitely not with the communities most important vol-

unteers, but with the administrative process. My sincere apologies to all the firemen and firewomen that
we so depend on.

REMEMBERING OUR ROOTS ~Florice Desmet

JOHN GODSMAN
Times Contributor
The name De Smet (later changed to Desmet)
first appeared in Strathmore in 1910, when an immigrant cabinetmaker and carpenter arrived from
Belgium. His nephew, Joseph Van Tighem and family were already here, as Joseph was the manager
of the new Union Bank, which became the Royal
Bank.
A cousin, Father Leonard Van Tighem, was the
pastor of the new Sacred Heart Church that was
built at the west end of 3rd Avenue. At that time
there was plenty of work for a
carpenter, so after two years he
sent for his family to join him.
His wife, Irma, and four children
Antoinette (13), Anton (11), Joseph Jnr (9) and Mary (6) crossed
the Atlantic on the ship that preceded the Titanic in April 1912.
They faced a new and exciting
life in what at the time was a new
pioneer town, in a new country.
But, sorrow followed their first
year here, when Antoinette died
of meningitis, and was buried in
the new Strathmore Cemetery. In
1914, Albert Charles was born
here in Strathmore. Then their
oldest son, Anton, died of Spanish flu in 1918.
Joseph was an avid skater, and spent most of his
leisure time either building, supervising, or caretaking the first skating rink in town.
In 1918, the family bought a CPR ready made
farm in the Elwood district, ten miles east of Strathmore, which is still in the family, being farmed by
fourth generation family members and is known as
the Tree to Tree Nursery.
Florice family also originated in Western Europe,
with her father Peter Nelson Warner being born in
Sweden, and came to what is now the Province of
Alberta in 1902, two years before it officially became a Province in 1904. Her mother Laverna Sammons came from Iowa to Gleichen in 1910. Peter
and Laverna were married in 1919.
Florice (nee Warner) was born in 1922, and lived
on the family farm. She became a teacher at Elwood School, until she married Albert Desmet in

1944, and they raised six children at the Elwood

family farm. Elaine, Yvonne, Leonard and Joanne
have all married and are farming in the Strathmore/
Gleichen area.
Robert, the youngest boy, became a phys. ed
teacher in Calgary. But, after five years he was diagnosed with malignant melanoma, and died in
1990, nine months after diagnosis. Leona came
to the family through adoption in 1967 at the age
of four. After school, she spent 27 years working
with the Department of Natural Resources. She has
three children - Fraser, Sarah, and Lucas, all living
and working in Calgary.
As farm parents living 13 miles
from town, Florice and Albert were
kept very busy taking children to
hockey games, school sports, music lessons, and community activities. Albert coached hockey for
many years, and was very active in
the community, playing a big part
in bringing to the Namaka area,
the Elwood Telephone Company,
and rural electrification, as well
as being a leader of the 4-H Beef
Club.
They retired from farming in
1971, with their oldest son Leonard taking over. They joined a
curling club and bridge club,
and volunteered at St Pius Parish
Church and Varsity Community
Club in Calgary. Regretfully, Albert passed away in
1978 following an aneurysm, which was preceded
by gall stone surgery. Florice moved into a Horizon
Village bungalow where she lived for the next 25
years. Following the celebration of her 90th Birthday in 2012, she decided to move back to Strathmore to be closer to her family and her 28 greatgrandchildren. She now lives in Sagewood.
All of her family live in Southern Alberta, and
all of the teenagers are kept busy participating in
competitive sports. Presently, two are members of
The Young Canadians, six are participants in rodeo,
one is in gymnastics, seven compete in water-skiing, seven in snow skiing, and two play in fast pitch
competition. Six of her grandchildren have earned
four-year scholarships to U.S. Universities.
God has been good to us, she said. We give
thanks.

Correction
In the article in last weeks edition, County approved additional funding for Gleichen Cemetery, it states the cemetery was
included in the Wheatland County budget at $24,000. The $24,000 was actually a donation from the Catholic Diocese.
Wheatland County clarified that that caskets will remain in the ground and the concrete slabs on top of the graves are
cracked and broken. The county is not proceeding with any necessary upgrades to the gravesites without permission
from the families. No negative feedback has been received.

Youth Club had

great summer
of fundraising
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Numerous fundraising efforts not only contributed
to a busy summer for the
Strathmore Youth Club, but
also helped raise over a
thousand dollars for the Alberta Childrens Hospital.
The $1,247 raised from
bake sales and car washes
went into buying toys that
were delivered on Aug. 21 to
the Alberta Childrens Hospital.
This summer we decided
instead of doing a bunch of
little fundraisers where the
children donated to different organizations that we
wanted to donate it all to
the Childrens Hospital, said
Hannah Magee, Strathmore
Youth Clubs Program and
Outreach Coordinator. And
for that reason, we have a
couple of frequent flyers that
go there, some special kids
for us. (On many) Fridays,
we did things like car washes and bake sales.
As a way to recognize the
hard work, Magee felt that it
was a great experience for
all 32 youth club members
to bring the toys to the kids.
We took a trip into the
Childrens Hospital and all
the kids were able to donate
that to them, said Magee.
And then we got a wonderful tour of the place. It was
just a great experience for
the kids to be able to see
their hard work all summer
and how it paid off and see
where it went to.
She thought from what

transpired from the summer

camp will go all year round,
not just with one group, but
all of them.
We want to keep the Friday community service days
going and all of our groups,
said Magee. So not just
our after-school kids, (but)
our leadership kids and the
groups that I work with
through the junior high and
the high school is putting a
fundraising, kind of volunteer aspect in those groups
and putting that back into a
Kids helping Kids fund.
The biggest thing that the
Youth Club staff wanted the
kids to learn was teamwork
and to meet new people they
wouldnt have normally met.
Now that September has
arrived, the Youth Club is offering a number of programs
during the school months,
including the after-school
program having started on
the first day of school that
runs Monday to Friday.
Other programs include
Artistic Expressions, Excel (leadership), Extreme
Kids, Fantaboulus Fridays,
Fusion, Clubworks, Social
Networking Safety, Hit the
Road, Skills for Life (boys)
and EYES (girls), safeTALK,
Fishing, photography, Stage
Right, Junior Chef, Mad Science and Cornerstone (leadership).

The Strathmore Chamber moves forward

WALDO MUNOZ
Strathmore & District Chamber of Commerce

Since the beginning of 2015 the new
board of directors for the Strathmore
& District Chamber of Commerce has
been assessing how best to serve the
growing needs of the Strathmore and
area businesses.
Numerous benefits have been identified which brings us to make the decision to relocate from the Country Lane
Mall to downtown Strathmore. Having a Chamber of Commerce office in
such a centralized area will enable us

us to better serve the community and
be part of the downtown revitalization.
We want to thank Pascal Del Guercio for his years of unwavering support and the help he has provided to
the chamber through some challenging times. Thank you also to Wheatland Further Educations Joyce Bazant
for her work and help with the Strathmore Chamber.
We continue to be focused on future projects and events such as an
awards night on Oct. 22 in celebration
of Small Business Week. We are partnering with Community Futures on a
survey to assess the imminent needs
of Strathmore businesses and we are
making arrangements for speakers
and workshops to address topics such
as social media, customer service and
the challenges facing our ranchers
and farmers.
Whether you are a chamber member, business person or just have a
question our executive director, Shelley Toderian can still be reached at

For updates on our transition to a

Idea to recognize emergency services gains traction

MIRIAM OSTERMANN
Times Associate Editor

Strathmore businesses, local organizations, and good
Samaritans are throwing
their support behind a benevolent notion to acknowledge unsung community
heroes an idea that started
snowballing after its inception two months ago and
now needs volunteers.
The idea of recognizing
emergency services, such as
police, ambulance services,
and firefighters, was devised
by Strathmore resident Chris
Morgan. While he originally
intended to bring the community together to interact
with authority in a social
setting, the event gained exponential interest from the
community, much to Morgans disbelief.
Its growing by leaps and
bounds, its unbelievable,
said Morgan. Ive always
been in the sales industry
and there I am with my hand
in your pocket trying to take
money out, and what I wanted to do was put some back
and just say thank you to all
the people that actually go
out and do their job every
day.
Twenty-five groups, including Boston Pizza and the

Royal Canadian Legion #10

in Strathmore, have already
committed to lend a hand. As
the word is quickly spreading around Strathmore and
the area, Morgans been receiving numerous phone
calls from individuals offering their services, whether
its bringing down a petting
zoo or doing a demonstration with the Jaws of Life.
While the event will involve short speeches from
delegates and captains, the
vision is to allow the event to
morph into its own style of
celebration. Morgan hopes
it could include racing with
the hose on their shoulders
and a visit from the Helicopter Air Watch for Community
Service (HAWCS) helicopter.
It might be a pipe dream,
but I honestly think that
this Town of Strathmore has
a whole lot more to offer
than just being a place outside of Calgary that nobody
ever really thinks about,
he said. Im just thinking
that its only going to go up
from here. Anytime that you
meet up with any of these
guys, its because something
crappy has happened. It hits
you right between the eyes,
and you expect these people
to come out and be professional. What Im trying to

do with this, is give them a

reason to smile, saying that
these people in Strathmore
and the area, actually do like
the idea of having people
like this in our community.
As Morgans brainchild is
growing in popularity, seniors are encouraged to also
take part and meet with the
powers that be. However,
volunteers are still needed
to help push wheelchairs
and ensure the festivities run
smoothly. In his attempt to
invite community members,
Morgan was surprised by the
feedback and willingness to
assist.
Chris didnt ask for anything for himself, he didnt
ask for donations, and he just
said hey come down, said
Paul Gaasenbeek, general

manager at the Boston Pizza,

who offered items such as
tickets to be auctioned off.
I think, in a smaller community especially, I think its
important to have trust. We
have given to so many charities, and Im a real strong believer you have to appreciate
your surroundings.
The event will take place
on Sept. 19 from 10 a.m. to
4 p.m. in Kinsmen Park. For
more information or to volunteer, contact Chris Morgan
at 403-901-1712.
While the event will provide a learning opportunity,
Morgan was clear in his intentions: I want it to be
educational, but I also want
these people to actually get
their hands shaken and being said a proper thank you.

Slick Water launches in Rosebud

LAUREEN F. GUENTHER
Times Contributor

Award-winning author Andrew Nikiforuk will launch his newest book, Slick
Water: Fracking and One Insiders Stand
Against the Worlds Most Powerful Industry, in Rosebud, Sept. 12. Nikiforuk
will speak and answer questions about
issues related to fracking formally
known as hydraulic fracturing and its
impact on fresh water supply.
Nikiforuk is starting his book tour in
tiny Rosebud, explained Shauna Murphy,
the events emcee and a long-time Rosebud resident, because the book centers
on the story of Jessica Ernst, who lives
on the edge of the hamlet. Ernst became
concerned about her well water, according to a prepared statement, when her
dogs refused to drink it, and it gave her
caustic burns. Ernst, a former consultant
for the oil and gas industry, believes her
familys water was ruined by fracking.
In 2008, Ernst began a lawsuit against
Encana, the company responsible for
fracking the communitys drinking water aquifers, as well as against various
Alberta government bodies. The lawsuit
is ongoing, and Ernst recently earned
the right to have her appeal heard in the
Supreme Court.
Fracking is all around us, and also all
over the place, Murphy said. This issue

has grown, even since Jessica began to

sound the alarm.
She hopes to see a large, diverse
crowd at the event, but that itll do much
more than sell the book.
She wants people to use it as an opportunity to learn about fracking, and
have their questions answered.
My hope is that ... if theres some
people that dont believe or whatever,
that theyll come too, she said. (Nikiforuk) will maybe prove (the concern)
to some doubters in the crowd ... Im
really hoping for a unifying event. Can
we all see?
I kind of hope for a fresh start, Murphy said. This is maybe the beginning
of just a community getting to know
whats really going on.
Encana and government representatives will be personally invited, and
Murphy emphasized that she hopes
theyll come too.
We have to work together to solve
any of it, Murphy said. I think theres
a better way.
The book launch takes place at the
Rosebud Community Hall, Saturday,
Sept. 12. The doors open at 6 p.m. Book
sales and signing begin at 6:30 p.m., and
at 7:30 p.m., Nikiforuk will give a book
talk and answer audience questions.
Rosebud Centre of the Arts will provide
refreshments.

JUSTIN SEWARD

The Strathmore Golf Clubs members continued
their dominance over the Lakes of Muirfield Golf
Club as they won the fifth installment of the Wheatland Cup with a 69-51 point differential.
Long time Strathmore Golf Club member Sandy
Daag received the cup for her team and loved the
atmosphere with new golfers that made the experience that much more enjoyable.
You get to meet new people, said Daag. You
get to play both golf courses, get a fabulous meal,
its great. We played with a couple ladies that we
hadnt played with before, super people, just really
good.
She felt that her team did not play any differently
than they would in a normal game of golf, as they
stayed consistent on both courses, which helped
preserve the victory.
Everybody contributed, it was fun, she said.
With this being her fourth time playing the event,
she said her game was in need of work, while she

I enjoy coming out here because I very seldom ever get to play this course, said long-time

He has been a member at the Strathmore Golf

A Muirfield Golf Club member since 2010, Gary

Its not a win or lose thing, said Edwards. Were

Henry appointed new Bisons head coach

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The CFR Chemicals Bisons have
named last years assistant Sandy Henry
as their head coach for the 2015-2016
season.
Henrys two sons, Darion and Jordan,
both went through the Bisons system,
and having been involved with a structurally sound program the last couple of
seasons under the guidance of former
head coach Dan MacDonald, he learned
the importance of developing young
players and moving them up to the next
level.
He feels honoured to have gotten
the nod to be the head coach of such
a great organization that he has been
around with for a long time, but said
he was not expecting this opportunity
to arise.
Its always an honour, said Henry.
My family has been a part of it for a
long time but certainly I never wouldve
thought the opportunity was there.

The circumstance came about and we

had to make some decisions that the
board felt they werent quite satisfied
with who was available as far as head
coaches.
He added a group effort behind the
bench will be needed as he will rely on
his assistants Dave Atwood and Doug
Raycroft to provide feedback on the
teams performance throughout the
year.
I think its going to be a group effort and it had to be that, he said. We
want to make it right, were going to do
a good job with it, but we had to share
it out to make it work properly. Im the
head coach in name, I wouldnt say I
have any more responsibilities than
those other two guys with the program.
Henry hopes to continue the success
that MacDonald created.
Because we had success, we understand what type of individuals we need
to replicate again, said Henry. And
who thrives under that environment
that Dan created (in) that type of atmo-

sphere. Were going to ask guys to be

accountable, were going to ask guys to
work hard every night and put the team
ahead of individuals. Its going to be a
skill-based development program.
With training camp starting next
week, Henry will instill a winning attitude and high expectation that will be
similar to last years Telus Cup team.
I think our success last year, is creating an expectation in the whole draw
zone that this team is capable of winning a national championship and that
should be everyones aspiration when
they come in, said Henry. We have a
good track record of really advancing
players on to the next level and I think
thats an expectation that youre going
to come here and work yourself into a
situation.
Youre going to work hard, youre going to learn how to be a better person,
youre going to learn a billet situation.
He added that the veterans are not
guaranteed a spot on this years team,
and they better be prepared to come in

403-874-6486

and battle hard to ensure that they secure a spot.

Bisons General Manager Wayne Hansen said Henrys personality and his
knowledge of how the team is run were
contributing factors to the hiring decision.
Sandy is well respected in the hockey
community, not just amongst our players but our board as well, said Hansen.
At the end of the day, after we did all
the interviews and did all the talking,
it just made perfect sense to go with
somebody whos already been in here
and continue to work on the things
thats made us successful the last couple
of years.
Hansen mentioned the team wants to
play with integrity and speed at all levels and the organization felt that Henry
can further develop the players in those
aspects of their games.
The CFR Chemicals Bisons will open
with rookie camp on Sept. 5 and 6 before opening up main camp from Sept.
8-11 at the Strathmore Family Centre.

Badgers football fielding competitive teams

JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

Large turnouts are creating optimism
for the Strathmore Community Football
Association about fielding teams to battle every game when the season begins
this weekend.
The number of players showing up to
practices, especially new ones, excited
senior team head coach Brad Middlemiss.
With his team being in a new league
this year, he is unsure of what to expect.
Its a new league this year so we
dont really know what to expect in the
nine man league but I think were going to be competitive, said Middlemiss.
He added that it is about 50/50 with
the rosters new players versus experienced players, and said after the Sept.
12 exhibition game theyll know where
they stand.
He has seen some improvement in areas of the teams game that will assist
them in seeing results.
Speed and size, said Middlemiss.
Ive got some returning players that
are absolute monsters, former Team
Alberta try-out members, and weve
got some kids here that are absolutely quick. Weve got to get their hands
there so they can catch the ball.

Strathmore

Denture Clinic
Terry Grant Denturist
403.934.3877

Middlemiss said whoever wants to

commit and show up for practices will
get their preferred starting positions.
The seniors will open up with an exhibition game on Sept. 12 against Innisfail before opening up the regular
season on Sept. 19 in Didsbury.
Meanwhile, the bantam Badgers had
great numbers return from the spring
camp and new players have already
filled in some positions.
Some of the lacrosse guys came because Tanner Bean, he was the quarterback for the peewee team last year, he
brought up a few of his friends, said
head coach Sean Seafoot. We have
some more guys playing defensive
back, more receiver type bodies, and
we have a kicker, he was doing kicks
from the 30-yard line here, that opens
up our game a lot.
Seafoot mentioned with the lack of
size on the offense, they will have to
attack opposing defenses with different play calls to spread the ball around
the field.
If you have enough big guys, you
could have a good run game but were
going to have to pass the ball. Were
going to have to succeed on the passing game.
They will open up on Sept. 5 versus
Drumheller in Strathmore at 1 p.m.
A year after losing in the league final, the peewee team will have a much
younger-looking squad with many
graduating to the bantam team.
Head coach Clinton Bean thinks it is
a bit early to tell if the team can get
back the championship game, but with
the early chemistry anything can hap-

pen.
It is a little bit early, said Bean.
(The) defense is looking really good.
The offense is a little slow, but it always starts out slow because there is
a lot of kids learning new positions.
I think we could easily be top four, if
not, number one again.
The peewees will open up their season on Sept. 19 in Sylvan Lake against
the defending champions and one
Bean says will be a bit of a redemption
game for many of the players.

Kings expect hard

work in training camp
JUSTIN SEWARD
Times Reporter

The hockey season is fast approaching and now it will come down to who
works the hardest in training camp,
which starts on Sept. 7, to earn their spot
on the Wheatland Kings roster.
Players have already expressed their
eagerness to participate in the camp and
begin honing their skills, head coach
Joel Robinson said.
I know some of them are getting the
off-season out of the way and just realizing that the season is fast approaching,
said Robinson. I also had a lot of guys
come to me and ask me when camp
starts. Its a different mentality, the guys
that are coming back. I think theres
about 10 of them that I talk to that are
coming to camp for sure. Thats nice to
know I have a core group to build off of
this year.
The Kings staff will be looking for
athletes at the camp that will compete,
work hard and not require time off.
I expect them to work as hard in training camp as they would in a practice or
regular season, said Robinson. I want
a guy thats going to work for me in between the whistles and not a guy thats
going to be stupid after the whistles or
thats not going to be a team guy. Im
going to build a squad thats completely
team-first this year.
Defenseman Blake Bishop is looking
forward to a new coaching staff and
likes what Robinson has put into place
so far going into main camp. The team
will be picked based on their hard work
in on-ice drills and off-ice dry land.
Im ready for the season, said Bishop. I feel comfortable Joels going to put
together a great team. I have all my confidence in him.
Training camp will run from Sept. 7-10
at the Strathmore Family Centre.

Most people who own a home have a credit card. You need it for all kinds of major purchases: a new TV, building a
new deck, maybe even new appliances or better yet, a much needed, well-deserved, yes you earned it, kind of vacation.
Everyone knows that the best thing you can do is pay off the credit card every month. So a few months have gone by and
that credit card balance is still there. Now wait a minute, something else happened to you and your life and that credit
card balance is still there. Time has slipped by and you have been carrying a $15,000 balance on your credit card at 21
per cent interest for months now. No big deal, I will just keep making the minimum payments.
Yes you must make the minimum payments - but it will not get paid off this way. Its not entirely your fault. You make
the some money, have the same expenses, live the same lifestyle, and the lottery is just not working the way it used to.
If you own your own home, consider refinancing. If you are able to to pay off all these credit lines and debts owing how
would that make you feel. If you have a mortgage of $300,000 and you are able to add $15,000 to it and pay it all off at
3 per cent, the savings can be huge and the impact to your life can be substantial in two key ways. First your going to save
money in what you pay in interest. The second and most commonly overlooked piece to this is that
you will reduce your overall payments as well. So not only will you be saving money you will free
up more cash which you can use in any number of ways including paying off your mortgage faster.
Do yourself a favour, review your credit card statements. Go back as far as you have to to the first
month when you started carrying a balance over zero. If that was more than three months ago or
your credit card is at its limit, give me a call youll be glad you did.
