006.

159 As for those who divide their religion and break up into sects, thou hast no part
in them in the least: their affair is with Allah: He will in the end tell them the truth of all
that they did.

Al-Qur'an, 006.159 (Al-Anaam [Cattle, Livestock])

023.051 O ye messengers! enjoy (all) things good and pure, and work righteousness: for I
am well-acquainted with (all) that ye do.

023.052 And verily this Brotherhood of yours is a single Brotherhood, and I am your
Lord and Cherisher: therefore fear Me (and no other).

023.053 But people have cut off their affair (of unity), between them, into sects: each
party rejoices in that which is with itself.

023.054 But leave them in their confused ignorance for a time.

Al-Qur'an, 023.051-054 (Al-Mumenoon [The Believers])

030.031 Turn ye back in repentance to Him, and fear Him: establish regular prayers, and
be not ye among those who join gods with Allah,-

030.032 Those who split up their Religion, and become (mere) Sects,- each party
rejoicing in that which is with itself!

Al-Qur'an, 030.031-032 (Ar-Room [The Romans, The Byzantines])

Volumn 004, Book 056, Hadith Number 803. (SAHIH AL BUKHARI)

-----------------------------------------
Narated By Hudhaifa bin Al-Yaman : The people used to ask Allah's Apostle about good,
but I used to ask him about evil for fear that it might overtake me. Once I said, "O Allah's
Apostle! We were in ignorance and in evil and Allah has bestowed upon us the present
good; will there by any evil after this good?" He said, "Yes." I asked, "Will there be good
after that evil?" He said, "Yes, but it would be trained with Dakhan (i.e. Little evil)." I
asked, "What will its Dakhan be?" He said, "There will be some people who will lead
(people) according to principles other than my tradition. You will see their actions and
disapprove of them." I said, "Will there by any evil after that good?" He said, "Yes, there
will be some people who will invite others to the doors of Hell, and whoever accepts their
invitation to it will be thrown in it (by them)." I said, "O Allah's Apostle! Describe those
people to us." He said, "They will belong to us and speak our language" I asked, "What
do you order me to do if such a thing should take place in my life?" He said, "Adhere to
the group of Muslims and their Chief." I asked, "If there is neither a group (of Muslims)
nor a chief (what shall I do)?" He said, "Keep away from all those different sects, even
if you had to bite (i.e. eat) the root of a tree, till you meet Allah while you are still in
that state."
Volumn 009, Book 088, Hadith Number 206.

-----------------------------------------

Narated By Hudhaifa bin Al-Yaman : The people used to ask Allah's Apostle about the
good but I used to ask him about the evil lest I should be overtaken by them. So I said, "O
Allah's Apostle! We were living in ignorance and in an (extremely) worst atmosphere,
then Allah brought to us this good (i.e., Islam); will there be any evil after this good?" He
said, "Yes." I said, 'Will there be any good after that evil?" He replied, "Yes, but it will be
tainted (not pure.)'' I asked, "What will be its taint?" He replied, "(There will be) some
people who will guide others not according to my tradition? You will approve of some of
their deeds and disapprove of some others." I asked, "Will there be any evil after that
good?" He replied, "Yes, (there will be) some people calling at the gates of the (Hell)
Fire, and whoever will respond to their call, will be thrown by them into the (Hell) Fire."
I said, "O Allah s Apostle! Will you describe them to us?" He said, "They will be from
our own people and will speak our language." I said, "What do you order me to do if such
a state should take place in my life?" He said, "Stick to the group of Muslims and their
Imam (ruler)." I said, "If there is neither a group of Muslims nor an Imam (ruler)?" He
said, "Then turn away from all those sects even if you were to bite (eat) the roots of
a tree till death overtakes you while you are in that state."

007.037 Who is more unjust than one who invents a lie against Allah or rejects His
Signs? For such, their portion appointed must reach them from the Book (of decrees):
until, when our messengers (of death) arrive and take their souls, they say: "Where are
the things that ye used to invoke besides Allah?" They will reply, "They have left us in
the lurch," And they will bear witness against themselves, that they had rejected Allah.

Al-Qur'an, 007.037 (Al-Araf [The Heights])

016.020 Those whom they invoke besides Allah create nothing and are themselves
created.

016.021 (They are things) dead, lifeless: nor do they know when they will be raised up.

016.022 Your Allah is one Allah: as to those who believe not in the Hereafter, their hearts
refuse to know, and they are arrogant.

Al-Qur'an, 016.020-022 (An-Nahl [The Bee])

016.086 When those who gave partners to Allah will see their "partners", they will say:
"Our Lord! these are our 'partners,' those whom we used to invoke besides Thee." But
they will throw back their word at them (and say): "Indeed ye are liars!"

016.087 That Day shall they (openly) show (their) submission to Allah; and all their
inventions shall leave them in the lurch.

Al-Qur'an, 016.086-087 (An-Nahl [The Bee])

022.062 That is because Allah - He is the Reality; and those besides Him whom they
invoke,- they are but vain Falsehood: verily Allah is He, Most High, Most Great.

Al-Qur'an, 022.062 (Al-Hajj [The Pilgrimage])

031.030 That is because Allah is the (only) Reality, and because whatever else they
invoke besides Him is Falsehood; and because Allah,- He is the Most High, Most Great.

Al-Qur'an, 031.030 (Luqman [Luqman])

035.013 He merges Night into Day, and he merges Day into Night, and he has subjected
the sun and the moon (to his Law): each one runs its course for a term appointed. Such is
Allah your Lord: to Him belongs all Dominion. And those whom ye invoke besides Him
have not the least power.

035.014 If ye invoke them, they will not listen to your call, and if they were to listen, they
cannot answer your (prayer). On the Day of Judgment they will reject your "Partnership".
and none, (O man!) can tell thee (the Truth) like the One Who is acquainted with all
things.

Al-Qur'an, 035.013-014 (Fatir [The Angels, Originator])

039.038 If indeed thou ask them who it is that created the heavens and the earth, they
would be sure to say, "Allah". Say: "See ye then? the things that ye invoke besides
Allah,- can they, if Allah wills some Penalty for me, remove His Penalty?- Or if He wills
some Grace for me, can they keep back his Grace?" Say: "Sufficient is Allah for me! In
Him trust those who put their trust."

Al-Qur'an, 039.038 (Az-Zumar [The Troops, Throngs])

040.020 And Allah will judge with (justice and) Truth: but those whom (men) invoke
besides Him, will not (be in a position) to judge at all. Verily it is Allah (alone) Who
hears and sees (all things).

Al-Qur'an, 040.020 (Al-Ghafir [The Forgiver [God]])

040.066 Say: "I have been forbidden to invoke those whom ye invoke besides Allah,-
seeing that the Clear Signs have come to me from my Lord; and I have been commanded
to bow (in Islam) to the Lord of the Worlds."

Al-Qur'an, 040.066 (Al-Ghafir [The Forgiver [God]])

041.047 To Him is referred the Knowledge of the Hour (of Judgment: He knows all): No
date-fruit comes out of its sheath, nor does a female conceive (within her womb) nor
bring forth the Day that (Allah) will propound to them the (question), "Where are the
partners (ye attributed to Me?" They will say, "We do assure thee not one of us can bear
witness!"
041.048 The (deities) they used to invoke aforetime will leave them in the lurch, and they
will perceive that they have no way of escape.

Al-Qur'an, 041.047-048 (Fussilat [Explained in Detail])

043.086 And those whom they invoke besides Allah have no power of intercession;- only
he who bears witness to the Truth, and they know (him).

043.087 If thou ask them, who created them, they will certainly say, Allah: How then are
they deluded away (from the Truth)?

Al-Qur'an, 043.086-087 (Az-Zukhruf [Ornaments of Gold, Luxury])

046.004 Say: "Do ye see what it is ye invoke besides Allah? Show me what it is they
have created on earth, or have they a share in the heavens bring me a book (revealed)
before this, or any remnant of knowledge (ye may have), if ye are telling the truth!
046.005 And who is more astray than one who invokes besides Allah, such as will not
answer him to the Day of Judgment, and who (in fact) are unconscious of their call (to
them)?

046.006 And when mankind are gathered together (at the Resurrection), they will be
hostile to them and reject their worship (altogether)!

Al-Qur'an, 046.004-006 (Al-Ahqaf [The Wind-curved Sandhills, The Dunes])

072.018 "And the places of worship are for Allah (alone): So invoke not any one along
with Allah;

072.019 "Yet when the Devotee of Allah stands forth to invoke Him, they just make
round him a dense crowd."

072.020 Say: "I do no more than invoke my Lord, and I join not with Him any (false
god)."

Al-Qur'an, 072.018-020 (Al-Jinn [The Jinn])

023.117 If anyone invokes, besides Allah, Any other god, he has no authority therefor;
and his reckoning will be only with his Lord! and verily the Unbelievers will fail to win
through!

Al-Qur'an, 023.117 (Al-Mumenoon [The Believers])

027.080 Truly thou canst not cause the dead to listen, nor canst thou cause the deaf to
hear the call, (especially) when they turn back in retreat.

Al-Qur'an, 027.080 (An-Naml [The Ant, The Ants])

035.022 Nor are alike those that are living and those that are dead. Allah can make any
that He wills to hear; but thou canst not make those to hear who are (buried) in
graves.

Al-Qur'an, 035.022 (Fatir [The Angels, Originator])

003.018 Allâh bears witness that Lâ ilâha illa Huwa (none has the right to be
worshipped but He), and the angels, and those having knowledge (also give this
witness); (He is always) maintaining His creation in Justice. Lâ ilâh illa Huwa (none
has the right to be worshipped but He), the All-Mighty, the All-Wise

Al-Qur'an, 003.018 (Aal-E-Imran [The Family of Imran])

005.035 O ye who believe! Do your duty to Allah, seek the means of approach unto Him
(Waseelah) , and strive with might and main in his cause: that ye may prosper.

Al-Qur'an, 005.035 (Al-Maeda [The Table, The Table Spread])

Meaning of al-Waseelah

Waseelah is nearness and the means by which one approaches

and draws near to something. In the Islamic context, Waseelah

refers to the means by which once can achieve nearness with

Allah.

Another meaning of al-Waseelah is a rank and standing with

Allah, as is the Hadeeth. The Messenger of Allah (pbuh) said: “When

you hear the caller to prayer then say the like of what he says,

then send blessings upon me… Then ask Allah to grant me al-

Waseelah because it is a station in Paradise, which is

appropriate only for a single servant from the servants of Allah,

and I hope that it will be me.”

(Saheeh Muslim vol.1, no.747.)

Allah says in the Qur’aan: “O you who believe! Do your duty to

Allah and fear Him. Seek the means of approach (al-Waseelah)

to Him, and strive hard in His Cause as much as you can. So

that you may be successful.” Al-Qur'an, 005.035

Al-Hafidh Ibn Katheer (rahimahullah) reported Ibn Abbas (radiallahu anhu)

saying in his commentary of this verse: “The meaning of al-

Waseelah is to draw closer.” He also reports from Qatadah: “This

is that you draw near to Him by obedience to Him and through

actions that are pleasing to Him.” And Ibn Katheer (rahimahullah)

said: “And with regard to what those Imams (Ibn Abbas and

Qatadah) said there is no disagreement between the scholars of

Tafseer about it… al-Waseelah is that by means of which one

reaches that which he desires.”

(Tafseer Ibn Katheer.)

These two verses and their authentic Tafseers (commentaries)

clearly explain that Waseelah consists of seeking nearness to Allah

by means of righteousness in order to get closer to Allah.

This refutes any other explanation of Waseelah like that of those

who consider Waseelah to mean directly supplicating to the dead

saints. It refutes the erroneous belief held by many people of

seeking ‘Tawassul’ through the status and honor of the Prophets

and saints.

Tawassul in the Qur’aan and the Sunnah

The correct means of Tawassul are three…

• Tawassul by means of Allah’s Beautiful Names,

• Tawassul by means of righteous deeds of the supplicant

and,

• Tawassul by means of a supplication made by a righteous

Person (to ask any righteous living person to

make Du’aa (supplication) for oneself)

017.056 Say: "Call on those - besides Him - whom ye fancy: they have neither the power
to remove your troubles from you nor to change them."

017.057 Those whom they call upon do desire (for themselves) means of access to their
Lord (Waseelah), - even those who are nearest: they hope for His Mercy and fear His
Wrath: for the Wrath of thy Lord is something to take heed of.
Al-Qur'an, 017.056-057 (Al-Isra [Isra, The Night Journey, Children of Israel ])

56. Say (O Muhammad): "Call unto those besides Him whom you pretend [to be gods
like angels, Iesâ (Jesus), 'Uzair (Ezra), etc.]. They have neither the power to remove the
adversity from you nor even to shift it from you to another person."

57. Those whom they call upon [like 'Iesa (Jesus) son of Maryam (Mary), 'Uzair (Ezra),
angel, etc.] desire (for themselves) means of access to their Lord (Allâh), as to which of
them should be the nearest and they ['Iesa (Jesus), 'Uzair (Ezra), angels, etc.] hope for His
Mercy and fear His Torment. Verily, the Torment of your Lord is something to be afraid
of!

Al-Qur'an, 017.056-057 (Al-Isra [Isra, The Night Journey, Children of Israel ])

(Dr. Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali, Ph.D. & Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan)

046.027 We destroyed aforetime populations round about you; and We have shown the
Signs in various ways, that they may turn (to Us).

046.028 Why then was no help forthcoming to them from those whom they worshipped
as gods, besides Allah, as a means of access (to Allah)? Nay, they left them in the lurch:
but that was their falsehood and their invention.

Al-Qur'an, 046.027-028 (Al-Ahqaf [The Wind-curved Sandhills, The Dunes])

27. And indeed We have destroyed towns (populations) round about you, and
We have (repeatedly) shown (them) the Ayât (proofs, evidences, verses,
lessons, signs, revelations, etc.) in various ways that they might return (to the
truth and believe in the Oneness of Allâh - Islâmic Monotheism).

28. Then why did those whom they had taken for âliha (gods) besides Allâh, as a
way of approach (to Allâh) not help them? Nay, but they vanished completely
from them (when there came the torment). And that was their lie, and their
inventions which they had been inventing (before their destruction).

Al-Qur'an, 046.027-028 (Al-Ahqaf [The Wind-curved Sandhills, The Dunes])

(Dr. Muhammad Taqi-ud-Din Al-Hilali, Ph.D. & Dr. Muhammad Muhsin Khan)

002.048 Then guard yourselves against a day when one soul shall not avail another nor
shall intercession be accepted for her, nor shall compensation be taken from her, nor shall
anyone be helped (from outside).

Al-Qur'an, 002.048 (Al-Baqara [The Cow])

002.123 Then guard yourselves against a-Day when one soul shall not avail another, nor
shall compensation be accepted from her nor shall intercession profit her nor shall anyone
be helped (from outside).

Al-Qur'an, 002.123 (Al-Baqara [The Cow])

002.254 O ye who believe! Spend out of (the bounties) We have provided for you, before
the Day comes when no bargaining (Will avail), nor friendship nor intercession. Those
who reject Faith they are the wrong-doers.

Al-Qur'an, 002.254 (Al-Baqara [The Cow])

019.087 None shall have the power of intercession, but such a one as has received
permission (or promise) from (Allah) Most Gracious.

Al-Qur'an, 019.087 (Maryam [Mary])

020.109 On that Day shall no intercession avail except for those for whom permission
has been granted by (Allah) Most Gracious and whose word is acceptable to Him.

Al-Qur'an, 020.109 (Ta-Ha [Mystic letters Ta-Ha])

021.028 He knows what is before them, and what is behind them, and they offer no
intercession except for those who are acceptable, and they stand in awe and reverence of
His (Glory).
Al-Qur'an, 021.028 (Al-Anbiya [The Prophets])

034.023 "No intercession can avail in His Presence, except for those for whom He has
granted permission. So far (is this the case) that, when terror is removed from their hearts
(at the Day of Judgment, then) will they say, 'what is it that your Lord commanded?' they
will say, 'That which is true and just; and He is the Most High Most Great'."

Al-Qur'an, 034.023 (Saba [ Saba , Sheba ])

036.023 "Shall I take (other) gods besides Him? If (Allah) Most Gracious should intend
some adversity for me, of no use whatever will be their intercession for me, nor can they
deliver me.

Al-Qur'an, 036.023 (Ya-Seen [Ya-Seen])

039.044 Say: "To Allah belongs exclusively (the right to grant) intercession: to Him
belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth: In the End, it is to Him that ye shall
be brought back."

Al-Qur'an, 039.044 (Az-Zumar [The Troops, Throngs])

043.086 And those whom they invoke besides Allah have no power of intercession;- only
he who bears witness to the Truth, and they know (him).

Al-Qur'an, 043.086 (Az-Zukhruf [Ornaments of Gold, Luxury])

053.026 How many-so-ever be the angels in the heavens, their intercession will avail
nothing except after Allah has given leave for whom He pleases and that he is acceptable
to Him.

Al-Qur'an, 053.026 (An-Najm [The Star])

002.255 Allah! There is no god but He,-the Living, the Self-subsisting, Eternal. No
slumber can seize Him nor sleep. His are all things in the heavens and on earth. Who is
there can intercede in His presence except as He permitteth? He knoweth what (appeareth
to His creatures as) before or after or behind them. Nor shall they compass aught of His
knowledge except as He willeth. His Throne doth extend over the heavens and the earth,
and He feeleth no fatigue in guarding and preserving them for He is the Most High, the
Supreme (in glory).

Al-Qur'an, 002.255 (Al-Baqara [The Cow])

Also referred to as "Ayat-ul-Kursi"

032.004 It is Allah Who has created the heavens and the earth, and all between them, in
six Days, and is firmly established on the Throne (of Authority): ye have none, besides
Him, to protect or intercede (for you): will ye not then receive admonition?

Al-Qur'an, 032.004 (As-Sajda [The Prostration, Worship, Adoration])

SAHIH AL BUKHARI

Volumn 009, Book 093, Hadith Number 601.

-----------------------------------------

Narated By Ma'bad bin Hilal Al'Anzi : We, i.e., some people from Basra gathered and
went to Anas bin Malik, and we went in company with Thabit Al-Bunnani so that he
might ask him about the Hadith of Intercession on our behalf. Behold, Anas was in his
palace, and our arrival coincided with his Duha prayer. We asked permission to enter and
he admitted us while he was sitting on his bed. We said to Thabit, "Do not ask him about
anything else first but the Hadith of Intercession." He said, "O Abu Hamza! There are
your brethren from Basra coming to ask you about the Hadith of Intercession." Anas then
said, "Muhammad talked to us saying, 'On the Day of Resurrection the people will surge
with each other like waves, and then they will come to Adam and say, 'Please intercede
for us with your Lord.' He will say, 'I am not fit for that but you'd better go to Abraham as
he is the Khalil of the Beneficent.' They will go to Abraham and he will say, 'I am not fit
for that, but you'd better go to Moses as he is the one to whom Allah spoke directly.' So
they will go to Moses and he will say, 'I am not fit for that, but you'd better go to Jesus as
he is a soul created by Allah and His Word.' (Be: And it was) they will go to Jesus and he
will say, 'I am not fit for that, but you'd better go to Muhammad.'

They would come to me and I would say, 'I am for that.' Then I will ask for my Lord's
permission, and it will be given, and then He will inspire me to praise Him with such
praises as I do not know now. So I will praise Him with those praises and will fall down,
prostrate before Him. Then it will be said, 'O Muhammad, raise your head and speak, for
you will be listened to; and ask, for your will be granted (your request); and intercede, for
your intercession will be accepted.' I will say, 'O Lord, my followers! My followers!' And
then it will be said, 'Go and take out of Hell (Fire) all those who have faith in their hearts,
equal to the weight of a barley grain.' I will go and do so and return to praise Him with
the same praises, and fall down (prostrate) before Him. Then it will be said, 'O
Muhammad, raise your head and speak, for you will be listened to, and ask, for you will
be granted (your request); and intercede, for your intercession will be accepted.' I will
say, 'O Lord, my followers! My followers!' It will be said, 'Go and take out of it all those
who have faith in their hearts equal to the weight of a small ant or a mustard seed.' I will
go and do so and return to praise Him with the same praises, and fall down in prostration
before Him. It will be said, 'O, Muhammad, raise your head and speak, for you will be
listened to, and ask, for you will be granted (your request); and intercede, for your
intercession will be accepted.' I will say, 'O Lord, my followers!' Then He will say, 'Go
and take out (all those) in whose hearts there is faith even to the lightest, lightest
mustard seed. (Take them) out of the Fire.' I will go and do so."'

When we left Anas, I said to some of my companions, "Let's pass by Al-Hasan who is
hiding himself in the house of Abi Khalifa and request him to tell us what Anas bin Malik
has told us." So we went to him and we greeted him and he admitted us. We said to him,
"O Abu Said! We came to you from your brother Anas Bin Malik and he related to us a
Hadith about the intercession the like of which I have never heard." He said, "What is
that?" Then we told him of the Hadith and said, "He stopped at this point (of the
Hadith)." He said, "What then?" We said, "He did not add anything to that." He said,
Anas related the Hadith to me twenty years ago when he was a young fellow. I don't
know whether he forgot or if he did not like to let you depend on what he might have
said." We said, "O Abu Said ! Let us know that." He smiled and said, "Man was created
hasty. I did not mention that, but that I wanted to inform you of it.

Anas told me the same as he told you and said that the Prophet added, 'I then return for a
fourth time and praise Him similarly and prostrate before Him me the same as he 'O
Muhammad, raise your head and speak, for you will be listened to; and ask, for you will
be granted (your request): and intercede, for your intercession will be accepted.' I will
say, 'O Lord, allow me to intercede for whoever said, 'None has the right to be
worshiped except Allah.' Then Allah will say, 'By my Power, and my Majesty, and
by My Supremacy, and by My Greatness, I will take out of Hell (Fire) whoever said:
'None has the right to be worshipped except Allah.'"
004.048 Allah forgiveth not that partners should be set up with Him;
but He forgiveth anything else, to whom He pleaseth; to set up partners
with Allah is to devise a sin Most heinous indeed.

Al-Qur'an, 004.048 (An-Nisa)

064.013 Allah! There is no god but He: and on Allah, therefore, let the
Believers put their trust.

Al-Qur'an, 064.013 (At-Taghabun [Mutual Disillusion, Haggling])

002.256 There is no compulsion in religion. Verily, the Right Path has

become distinct from the wrong path. Whoever disbelieves in Tâghût
(false deities) and believes in Allâh, then he has grasped the most
trustworthy handhold that will never break. And Allâh is All-Hearer, All-
Knower.

Al-Qur'an, 002.256 (Al-Baqara [The Cow])
