Geometry 2015-2016

MS. KONG'S GEOMETRY CLASS

Welcome to Geometry! I am looking forward to a year full of growth and learning. Geometry is now
aligned with the national Common Core Standards. You will study and learn the critical elements of
geometry which include ideas of congruence, similarity, proof, constructions, and trigonometry. Additional
ideas include extending to three-dimensions, connecting algebra to geometry through coordinates, circles
and conics, and applications of probability. It seems like we couldnt possibly fit all that fun into one year,
but we will! Successfully completing Geometry as well as passing a state mandated assessment is required
for graduation.

WHAT WE'LL LEARN

1. Probability
2. Tools and Constructions
3. Rigid Motions
4. Parallel and Perpendicular Lines
5. Congruence
6. Similarity
7. Right Triangles and Trigonometry
8. Circles and Conics
9. Geometric Measurement and Dimension

#Top 5 Tips

MATERIALS NEEDED
Required:
Composition Notebook
Pencil
Compass
Suggested but not required:
Ruler and protractor
Scientific/graphing calculator
Scotch tape
Colored pens/pencils/markers

1. Everyone can learn Math to the highest levels.

2. Mistakes are valuable.
3. Questions are really important.
4. Math class is about learning, not performing.
5. Depth is much more important than speed.

EXTRA HELP
I am available before school (7-7:25am) and
after school (2:05-2:30pm) almost every day.
Check with me in class or send an email to
make sure that I dont have a meeting on the
day you want to come in. I am here to help so
dont be scared to ask for it!

GRADING SYSTEM
Assessments and assignments are attached to a standard (for example, Basic
Constructions). Standards quizzes and re-quizzes will happen weekly (usually on Friday),
while projects and problem tasks will be interspersed throughout the year. All are graded
using a rubric scale from 0-4. You earn a grade for what you know. Your job is to
convince me of your understanding.
Dont like your score? No problem! You will revisit any standard to show me you
understand it better. Revisits will happen in class at least once per standard. If you would
like to revisit a standard outside of class, there are some guidelines in place.**

**Out-of-Class Revisit Fine Points

1. You cannot get tutoring and revisit
on the same day.
2. You cant revisit more than two
standards at once.
3. You must show me your completed
practice for the skill before revisiting.
4. You can revisit any standard until
about a week before the end of the
quarter. I will give you the exact date
each quarter. (Thats just to allow me
enough time to grade and enter all the
scores into the gradebook.)

Other symbols that you might see are AB for absent, M for missing, and I for incomplete.
There are no zeros! I expect you to attempt every graded assessment. During the semester,
if you have incomplete or missing assignments, your overall grade will be shown as
incomplete as well.

Grading Categories
10% Midterm
The midterm is
taken at the end
of the quarter
and can be
replaced with
corresponding
section on final.

10% Final
The final is
cumulative per
semester.

80% Quizzes and Projects

Weekly standards quizzes can all be
revisited (required for in-class revisits if
you have not scored a 3.5 or above).
Projects and problem tasks are
interspersed throughout the year.

About Practice...
Practice is assigned and recorded but not
included in the grade. I understand that
you will need to practice some skills more
than others, so if you need to revisit a
standard outside of class, you need to
have completed the practice.
