Understanding the Doctrine of Grace

Many people ask whether or not Mormons believe in grace. The question arises because some
religions believe that all that you have to do is accept Jesus as your personal Savior and you are
immediately saved (saved by graceEphesians 2:8). Because our theology teaches that we are saved
by grace AFTER ALL THAT WE CAN DO (Faith without works is deadJames 2:17), some have the
mistaken impression that we dont believe in the grace of Jesus Christ. Nothing could be further from
the truth! Because of the Book of Mormon and modern day prophets, we have a clearer and more
comprehensive understanding of grace than any other people . In reality, we could be the most
righteous, obedient, service-oriented, loving people on the face of the earth but without the Atonement
of Jesus Christ we would never, worlds without end, have been able to return to live with our Father in
Heaven. We simply cant do it alone and never could. In other words, all of the good works in the world
are not enough for us to overcome the terrible burden of our transgressions, mistakes, sins, and human
frailties. D&C 19:16018 says, For behold, I, God, have suffered these things for all that they might not
suffer if they would repent; but if they would not repent they must suffer even as I; which suffering
caused myself, even God, the greatest of all, to tremble because of pain, and to bleed at every pore, and
to suffer both body and spiritand would that I might not drink the bitter cup, and shrink. Similarly,
in D&C 34:9 it clarifies that, for according to the great plan of the Eternal God there must be an
atonement made or else all mankind must unavoidably perish; yea, all are hardened; yea, all are fallen
and are lost, and must perish except it be through the atonement which it is expedient should be made.
For us to avail ourselves of this wonderful, soul-saving doctrine, all men must repent. As we teach our
investigators the doctrine of Christ, we must not gloss over the principle of repentance. Sometimes it is
the hardest doctrine to teach because it may be uncomfortable, it may make the investigator aware that
he or she is a sinner for the first time, it may awaken feelings of guilt, or it may appear that we are
judging them. Nevertheless, this doctrine must be taught fully, completely and without hesitation. It is a
great opportunity to emphacize that while real, sincere repentance is absolutely essential before we can
qualify for baptism, it is also a great opportunity to teach about the grace of the Lord and his loving gift
to all of us. Share with your investigators that it was because of love that the Savior did what he did.
Elder Dallin H Oaks reminds us that, The Savior does more than cleanse us from sin. He also gives us
new strengthto be admitted to His presence, we must be more than clean. We must also be
CHANGED. In another discourse he states, The repenting sinner must suffer for his sins, but this
suffering has a different purpose than punishment or payment. Its purpose is CHANGE. Elder Bruce
Hafen, an emeritus member of the Seventy has written, The Atonement is fundamentally a doctrine of
human development, not a doctrine that simply erases black marks. Finally Brother Millett reminds us
that, The Atonement does more than fix the mistakes. It does more than balance the scales. It even
does more than forgive our sins. It rehabilitates, regenerates, renews, and transforms human nature.
Christ makes us betterworlds betterthan we would have been had there been no Fall.
Elders and Sisters, it is my prayer that as you teach your investigators you will take the time to help these
choice spirits understand not only the doctrine of repentance but the supernal principle of gracethe
grace of an understanding God who rescues his children through an incomprehensible act of love. It
will ring true to themthey have heard it before beyond the veil.
Con mucho amor,
Presidente Dayton

Faith
And now as I said concerning faith faith is not to have a perfect knowledge of
things; therefore if ye have faith ye hope for things which are not seen, which are
true. - Alma 32:21
When we have faith in Christ, we believe in him as the son of God, the only begotten
of the father in the flesh. We accept him as our Savior and Redeemer and follow his
teachings. We believe that our sins can be forgiven through his atonement. Faith in
him means that we trust him and are confident that he loves us.
Faith is recognizing Gods will in a given matter and acting upon it. Faith leads to
action, including repentance, obedience, and dedicated service. When we have faith
in Jesus Christ, we trust the Lord enough to follow his commandments even when
we do not completely understand the reasons for them. We accomplish what the
Lord wants us to accomplish. We help bring about good in our own life and the lives
of others. We are able to do miracles according to the Lords will. Our faith is
manifest through diligence and work.
Faith in missionary work might be manifest in the following ways:

Believing there are many people looking for the truth and are ready to hear it
Knowing that if we work hard, are diligent and obedient, that the spirit will be
with us to bless others lives.
Knowing that if we open our mouths we will know what to speak to those we
contact.

President Dayton and I are so thrilled as we watch you exercise your faith in the Lord
in sharing the Gospel. We are seeing miracles every day because of your powerful
faith. We know your faith will continue to increase through diligent study, prayer,
dedicated service, and obedience to the promptings of the Holy Ghost and the
commandments.

We love you and will pray daily that through your faith you will continue to receive
answers to your prayers and personal inspiration to guide you as you faithfully serve
the Lord in the Spain Barcelona Mission.

Milagros
This miracle this week was the
baptism of Enni. As we talked to
her about everything after it was
made clear how we got to know
her. It was after weeks and weeks
of finding and finding and
through diligent working
everyday.
Our area is really great right now.
We baptized Enni and she
received the Holy Ghost as well.
We have Zulay down for the 18th
of this month and Steven and
Manuel down for the 25th of this
month
The miracle that I saw this
week was about the Marias
baptism! Maria, she got baptized
last sunday and it really was
spiritual. She was bearing her
testimony after the baptism and
just was not able to stop crying
from feeling the spirit. She
reminded me of my baptism a lot
and was really happy the fact we
were able to help her. While she
was bearing her testimony, she
thanked her home teacher,
bishop and the sister
missionaries. In that moment, I
realized the importance and the
power of callings from Heavenly
Father. When we serve other
people and are dedicated in our
calling at church, we will be
blessed and we will bless other
peoples lives.

Meta del Mes

La meta bautismal de
cada compaerismo!

This week has been such a

good one. We have been working
so hard with one man, Philip. He
is from Ghana and accepted
everything so well with what we
had to teach him. He admires the
savior and strives to be the
absolute best he can. Anyway, we
were having a tough time with
the baptism situation because he
had a few doubts about church.
We promised him all the
blessings he would receive if he
was baptized and came to church.
We talked to our district leader
later to see what we could do.
Philip had the strongest desire to
be baptized and he knew exactly
the purpose and reasons to do
so. He was beyond prepared!
Anyway, we got the okay and
tried to call him that night at
Noche de Rama. No answer. We
tried three times with the same
result. The fourth time, he
answered! We told him the good
news that he could be baptized.
And he about lost it! He was so
happy and excited. So, we had
the baptism of Philip on Saturday
with his confirmation the
following day. He is now
preparing to get the Priesthood.
What a miracle!
esta semana ha sido muy
bonito, pues tuvimos
el bautismo de arlette ella estaba
tan contenta, y nosotras
tambien despues de 5 meces
enseandole
nos dio la sorpresa y nos dijo que
queria ser bautizada y este fue el
milagro,

Well this week was the

craziest/worst/great/eventful
week!!!Wow was there a lot of
things going on. Well first of all as
you know we were getting ready
for a baptism. Well the mom of
the kids that were getting
baptized called us and said that
she needs help moving. She said
if she doesn't get it done by
Saturday that the baptism would
have to get postponed. Well of
course we can't let satan win so
we said we'll get someone there
to help you out. Well in the end it
was us and a very good friend of
ours named Dani Moreno. So
Friday comes and we get out to
this small town of about 1,000
inhabitants that's about 45
minutes from Lleida in car. So we
get there and start loading there
small truck thing and this is the
best part after we load the truck
since there is only room for two
people and we can't drive or
separate we had to stay behind.
That's not all. While we waited
they had to drive to another town
30 minutes away. So we load the
truck thing, they drive out 30
minutes, they unload, then drive
back 30 minutes. That's the
process. Pretty much it took a
total of 10 1/2 hours to get
everything there!!!!! Holy
bacon!!!! But we had fun!! In the
end everything went well and July
4th was celebrated with
abaptism!!!!!!! Glory to God in
the highest!!!!!!

Milagros
So this week's miracle was
definitely Philip! He had come to
church for the second time a
couple weeks ago but still had a
big doubt about the church. Since
then we had a few really good
lessons with him and on Friday he
agreed to be baptized the
following day. So Saturday
morning Elder Jones came and
did the interview, then after a
nice American lunch to celebrate
the holiday he was baptized. That
was an incredible miracle. Now
he will receive the Priesthood this
Sunday and pass the sacrament
next Sunday.
Well, we had the miracle of the
baptism of Indira in Tortosa! We
have been working on her for
four months, and her fear is that
she does not want to keep being
baptized in place to place. But we
invited her to be baptized on
Thursday, and she said "Estoy a
punto de decir que s" and we
pointed out how she knew that
the Book of Mormon is true and
she said that she knew it was true
and that she has felt that Jospeh
Smith was a prophet. We had the
interview, and she passed it and
she still doesnt feel like she was
ready to be baptized, but as the
same time she knew that she
was, that she was not going to
progress if she didnt act. So she
was baptized and she was very
happy about her decision!

This week we had a baptism! It

was a pretty amazing miricle to
Dayana get baptized. I've been
working with her for about 4 1/2
months to get her to accept a
fecha. The turning point for her
was when she started reading
and praying every day. She really
didn't progress until she started
doing that. I'm so glad that she
was able to get baptized.
Hola! President, it has been an
amazing week here in Badalona.
Three of the four companionships
in the district baptized, and there
were four in the zone! We had
planned to all baptize in the
district, but on Friday and
Saturday all three of our
candidates decided to wait for
various reasons. It was a surprise,
and was disappointing for sure,
but I know that the Lord will
continue to help us prepare our
friends to be able to be baptized
in the coming weeks.
