2. GLOBAL TRADE - KEY FINDINGS

Despite somewhat disappointing export numbers in 2014, Italy continued to
lead the way in the global chicory trade. In 2014, Italy exported 72 thousand
tonnes of chicory totaling 70 million USD, 7% under the previous year. Its
primary trading partner was Germany, where it supplied 68% of its total
chicory exports in value terms, accounting for 95% of Germanys total imports.
Overall, the global chicory trade reached 297 million USD, with a CAGR of 0.3%
from 2007 to 2014. In physical terms, it showed steady growth, rising from
194 thousand tonnes in 2007 to 280 thousand tonnes in 2014.
In 2014, France (16%), Germany (15%), Belgium (11%), Switzerland (10%)
and Italy (8%) were the leading destinations of chicory imports, together
making up 60% of global imports. The share of France increased (+4
percentage points), while the share of Germany illustrated negative dynamics
(-8 percentage points).
Spain and the Netherlands were among the other main global suppliers of
chicory in 2014 with a combined share of 41% of global exports. The fastest
growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were Greece (+58% per year) and
Mexico (+31% per year), but it was Spain that more than doubled its position
in the global export structure, from 10% in 2007 to 22% in 2014.
