4.3

5.0

The manufactures certification of test results which show the material brand, type, and

batch numbers, shall be maintained by the Quality Assurance Department.

SURFACE PREPARATION

5.1

The surface to be examined may be in the as welded, as forged, or as rolled conditions.

Grinding or machining is allowed to remove surface irregularities that could mask

unacceptable discontinuities. Cleaning by blasting with steel shot, dull sand, or vapor

blasting, is prohibited.

6.0
EXAMINATION SEQUENCE

6.1

Verify visually that the surface to be examined and adjacent surfaces within one (1) inch

are dry and free of dirt, grease, oil, lint, scale, and welding flux and weld splatter. The

illumination in the examination area shall be sufficient to clearly define all apparent

indications. A minimum light intensity of 100 fuci (1000 Lx) is required to ensure

adequate sensitivity during the examination and evaluation of indications. The light

source intensity shall be checked one time and a record kept on file.

6.1.1 Calibration

The Light Meter shall be calibrated at least once a year or wherever the meter has

been repaired. If the meters have not been in use for more than one year or more,

calibration shall be done before being used.

6.2

6.3

6.4

6.5

F and

The temperature of the penetrant and part to be examines shall be between 50

F.
Heating or cooling of the part is allowed to maintain the required temperature

125

during the examination.

Clean the surface to be examined with an approved cleaner (Sherwin Type DR60).

Spray surface to wet and dilute, removing all traces of contaminant. Wipe with a clean

lint-free absorbent paper or cloth to remove excess cleaner.

After all visible traces of the cleaner have evaporated; wait at least one (1) minute

before applying the penetrant.

Apply an approved penetrant (Sherwin Type DP40) using an aerosol spray can or by

brushing. Coat the surface thoroughly and uniformly. The penetrant shall remain on

the surface for ten (10) minutes minimum and thirty (30) minutes maximum before

removing the excess.

6.6

After the penetration dwell time has elapsed, remove excess penetrant by wiping with

clean lint-free absorbent paper or cloth. Clean until only a slight visible trace of

penetrant remains. Final removal shall be accomplished by wiping with a clean lint-

free absorbent paper or cloth that has been slightly dampened with the cleaner.

Allow the surface to dry for at least one (1) minute after all visible traces of the cleaner

have evaporated, but no more that ten (10) minutes, before applying the developer.

Note: Do not flush or spray area of interest with cleaner.

6.7

After the cleaned surface has dried for the specified time, apply the developer in a light

even coat. Excessive wetting or pools of the developer in depressions or cavities is

prohibited. (When using an aerosol can for application, thoroughly shake the can until

the agitator rattles. Invert spray can and spray short bursts to clear valve. Hold spray

can 8 to 12 inches from surface, press spray button straight down and apply a light and

slightly wet developer coating.)

7.0
EVALUATION

7.1

During the application of the developer, observe the test area to monitor indications

that have excessive bleed-out. Note the location and size of these excessive bleed-out

indications to allow for interpretation of the true size and type of discontinuity.

7.2

The final examination shall be performed after a minimum of ten (10) minutes, but no

longer than sixty (60) minutes.

The light intensity requirements per Section V paragraphs T-

676.3 and T-777.1 are satisfactory using a Mag Lite at a maximum distance of 24.

7.3

When welds are examined, a minimum of 1 inch or either side of the weld shall be

evaluated.

7.4

All indications shall be evaluated in terms of the acceptance standards of the reference

code which is given on each shop drawing. Any additional or special requirements

will be given on the Job Procedure Sheet.

7.5

The shape and size of objects to be examined are not limited to factors, provided the

specified area under examination can be properly examined within the specified time

intervals of this procedure.

7.6

Broad areas of fluorescence or pigmentation which could mask indications of

discontinuities are unacceptable, and such areas shall be cleaned and re-examined

7.7

ASME Section VIII, Appendix 8 Para 8-3. An indication of an imperfection may be

larger than the imperfection that causes it; however, the size of the indication is the

basis for acceptance evaluation. Only indications with major dimensions greater than

1/16. Shall be considered relevant.

(a) A linear indication is one having a length greater than three times the width.

(b) A rounded indication is one of circular or elliptical shape with a length equal to or

less than three times its width.

(c) Any questionable or doubtful indications shall be reexamined whether they are

relevant.

7.8

7.9

ASME B31.1 Chapter VI, Paragraph 136.4.4 Liquid Penetrant Examination (A) (A.3).

Relevant indications are those which result from unacceptable mechanical

discontinuities. Linear indications are those indications in which the length is more

than three times the width. Rounded indications are indications, which are circular or

elliptical with the length less than three times the width.

ASME B31.1 Chapter VI, Paragraph Liquid Penetrant Examination 136.4.4 (A) (A4).

An indication of a discontinuity may be larger than the discontinuity that causes it;

however, the size of the indication and not the size of the discontinuity is the basis of

acceptance or rejection.

7.10

7.11

ASME B31.3, Chapter I, Paragraph 300.2 Definitions

7.10.1 Indication, Linear: In liquid Penetrant examination a closed surface area

marking or denoting a discontinuity requiring evaluation, whose longest

dimension is at least three times the width of the indication.

7.10.2 Indication, Rounded; In liquid Penetrant examination a closed surface area

marking or denoting a discontinuity requiring evaluation, whose longest

dimension is at least three times the width of the indication.

Rejectable indications shall be recorded. As a minimum, the type of indications (linear

or rounded), location and extent (length and diameter or aligned) shall be recorded.

8.0
DOCUMENTATION

For each examination, the following information shall be recorded:

(a)
Procedure identification and revision;
