Aristotle

Slide 1 Biographical Information:

"We must not listen to those who urge us to think human
thoughts since we are human, and mortal thoughts since we
are mortal; rather, we should as far as possible immortalize
ourselves and do all we can to live by the finest element in us
for if it is small in bulk, it is far greater than anything else in
power and worth," a quote said by the famous philosopher
Aristotle. Aristotle was born in the summer of 384BC and has
left life in 322BC after a successful life. Aristotle was the son of
a physician to the king of Macedonia. At the age of seven his
father sent him to the one and only Plato Academy. Aristotle
started out as a student and eventually became a researcher
and then a teacher in the academy.
Slide 2 Childhood:
Aristotle grew up in the beautiful city of Pella. Some evidence
proves that he was unhappy there. Also, it is more likely that
Aristotle studied medicine like his father, since in that time the
practices of medicine was passed from father to son, and it
was also said that when Aristotle left home to study in Platos
academy he started of with practicing medicine. Aristotles
relationship with his father was tragically brief and it seems to
be genial that he named his own son Nicomachus in
remembrance of his father. Aristotles mother died before he
was eighteen and his father was definitely dead by 367BC, as
a victim of the internal Macedonian feuding.
Slide 3 Adult Life:
Aristotles relationship with his great master, Plato, was very
warm and respectful, and Plato had reciprocal feelings towards
Aristotle. To show his respect Aristotle remained at the
academy for twenty years until the death of its founder, Plato.
Aristotle later praised Plato by saying that he is, the man
whom it is not lawful for bad men even to praise, since Plato
said that Aristotle was the intellect of the school. Perhaps
Aristotle saw in Plato the father that he had lost. When Platos
nephew Speusippus was named head of the Academy upon his
death in 347, Aristotle departed from the school. It has been

suggested that Aristotle was disturbed at not being named as

head of that organization himself. When Aristotle moved to
Assos in north-western turkey, he became the close friend of
Hermias, who was a Greek soldier of fortune and a holder of
Persian overlords, and soon married Hermias' adopted
daughter, Pythias.
Slide 4 Death:
In 335BC Aristotle returned to Athens, he discovered the death
of Speusippus, Platos nephew, and again he was not gived the
presidency of the academy. So he went and found his own
school, which was named at that time Lyceum. In 323BC,
twelve years after opening the school, Alexander the great has
departed from life. In the Greek resentment against the
Macedonian control Aristotle was accused of impiety, and his
life became in risk. So he decided to leave Athens, and went to
his mothers homeland at Chalcis, where he moved to a house,
which was once his mothers but still owned by her family. He
died at the age of sixty-two because of stomach problems.
