WORKSHOPS WILL TAKE PLACE JUNE 13TH - 19TH & JUNE 20TH - 26TH
Small Class Size, Individual Attention, Complete Hands-On Workshops
The first session, "Merging the boundaries of art and nature," will combine
investigation in alternative jewelry design methods and interaction with the local
environment. ProVisions offers this program specifically to focus on utilizing found
objects and integrating a variety of artistic disciplines—from sculpture to drawing—into
bodily adornments. Students will have the freedom to discover what inspires their
personal creative processes and will be encouraged to find their individual artistic
identities. In only six days you can bring order out of chaos, fashion existing matter into
something new and transform overlooked resources into well crafted works of art. Every
day will be made up of three elements: exploration, examination and experimentation.
The first element of this workshop poses the question, “where do our materials come from
and where do they end up?” The second element encourages students to stretch, pound,
cut, burn, dye, bend and analyze various materials from the environment—such as moss,
wood, stone, leather, bone, and more. The third element of this workshop is open to
combining organic, found objects with loads of donated jewelry to create your own
uniquely composed adornments. Although this workshop is designed in part for creating
temporary and process based art, you will walk away with documentation of portfolio
quality completed works. From daily demonstrations, exposure to ancient and
contemporary influential artist's works, group critiques and hands-on activities, students of
all levels are sure to receive an enriching spectrum of knowledge, life skills and valued
relationships.
The second session, "Reclaiming Resources," will give students the opportunity to
transform unused, unwanted, excess jewelry into new innovative pieces of adornment.
ProVisions offers this program specifically to focus on raising awareness of the origin of
jewelry, connecting students with responsibly sourced materials, and providing instruction
on how to give life to jewelry that has been discarded. Viewing and discussing
inspirational films and works of contemporary artists will be vital in understanding
presented concepts throughout the course of the week. Each day will incorporate three
processes: mining, refining, and designing. Students will "mine" boxes of donated jewelry
and in just six days, utilize an array of demonstrated skills to develop a small body of
work. Whether students are beginners or advanced, it is an excellent way to begin
thinking about the destination of an object, with the goal of creating a closed-loop cycle in
production. Most of all, students are sure to receive a once in a life time opportunity to dig
their hands into a plethora of assorted types of jewelry—from outrageous to elegant,
chains to pearls, costume jewelry to precious metals—the creative potential is endless!
Note: Workshops are designed so they can be taken in chronological order or taken individually.
Students have the option to attend both weeks for a more enriching experience.
The workshops will be conducted by Dana Richardson & Sarah Zentz. Dana is a graduate from
School of the Art Institute of Chicago with a Fine Arts degree in Sculpture & Video. Sarah is a
graduate from Millersville University, Pennsylvania with a Fine Arts degree in Jewelry and New Media.
MISSION STATEMENT

LOCATION DESCRIPTION
Nestled along the Tuscarora mountains, ProVisions Artist Community, provides a perfect
escape from the routines, distractions, and chaos of every day life. ProVisions remote
location encompasses 10-acres of pristine forested landscape, rich with a diverse
ecology of plants and wildlife. The terrain is steep with open views of forested
mountains, the streams are plentiful in trout, and the nearby Juniata River offers
opportunities for outdoor activities such as tubing, canoeing, and kayaking. We hope
that you will find yourself at home among this lively community and inspired by the
abundance of resources in Honey Grove, Pennsylvania.
ProVisions property includes a uniquely designed A-frame cabin with a rooftop overlook
where you can see for miles, a large front porch, huge storage barn, multiple car
garages, four camping lots, two fire pits, an outhouse, mountain-side swings, hiking
trails, picnic tables, vegetable garden, as well as a free range chicken coop. The main
cabin is equipped with a kitchen, community living room, bathroom with shower,
fireplace, and comfortable housing for artists.
Most importantly, ProVisions offers the students studio space and time to create. It has
been said by fellow artists "the opportunity to live in this kind of open, secluded and
inspiring environment is the kind of experience every artist dreams of having."
We ask students to bring the following: Jewelers saw, saw blades, pliers (flat, round,
half round), wire cutters, needle files (flat, round, half round), sketchbook,
writing/drawing utensils, unwanted jewelry*, face mask*, eye protection*, flux*, Exacto
knife with blades*.
* Indicates optional items to bring. Note: ProVisions can order art materials for you.
Studio Safety:
Artists should be aware that in the studio, they may be working with tools which, if
improperly used, can cause injury. A safety tour and information about the proper
handling of tools and materials is part of our workshops; however, students assume the
risk of working with tools and materials provided by ProVisions.
ProVisions housing is semi rustic. The main cabin is air-conditioned with electricity and
shared bathroom and shower—the climate is moderate (averages around 70˚- 80˚
during the day and does not cool down too much at night). There are a variety of
options for indoor and outdoor housing. First, there is a basic dormitory style room with
bunk-beds and storage space inside the main cabin. Second, there are shared loft rooms
with basic furnishing: single beds and a place to put your clothes. Both indoor options
will have a shared bathroom and shower. Third, students have the option to camp
outdoors. Tents can be provided upon request. Outdoor campsites are equipped with
electricity hookups and fire pits. There is an outhouse toilet and shared indoor bathroom
and shower for the use of all students.
We do our best to match students with the type of housing they request, but this is not
always possible. You will be notified of your housing assignments prior to arrival.
Representative photographs of ProVisions housing are available on our website. Please
be aware that we assign separate housing for male and females.
ProVisions has internet access (no wireless), designated areas with cell phone service
and artists may use the landline to call long distance in the case of an emergency.
The cost for the one-week workshop includes 3 meals per day. Breakfast is served at
8AM, lunch at noon, and dinner at 5PM. Meals will be prepared and served in the main
cabin. Please note any special dietary needs in your application.
