2. GLOBAL TRADE - KEY FINDINGS

The Netherlands dominates in the global sugar beet trade. In 2014, the
Netherlands exported 279 thousand tonnes of sugar beet totaling 13 million
USD, 10% over the previous year. Its primary trading partner was Germany,
where it supplied 97% of its total sugar beet exports in value terms, accounting
for 5% of Germanys total imports.
From 2007 to 2014, the Netherlands was a net exporter of sugar beet. Over
this period, exports consistently exceeded imports in value terms. However, in
physical terms the difference was less pronounced.
Hungary and Germany were among the other main global suppliers of sugar
beet in 2014. However, the fastest growing exporters from 2007 to 2014 were
Austria (+87% per year) and China (+35% per year).
The Netherlands top 5 trading partners were Germany, Belgium, Norway,
Austria and Hungary, with a combined 100% share of the Netherlands sugar
beet exports. The share of Germany increased monumentally (+67 percentage
points), while the share of Belgium dropped dramatically (-67 percentage
points).
