Everyone Is Protected Under The

Constitution PM Bainimarama

The Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama

said that everyone living in Fiji is
safe and will be protected under the
constitution of Fiji.
He made the comments while speaking
in Ovalau.
Bainimarama said the political upheaval
of 2000 and 2006 was the main reason
he took over government to try and build
a better Fiji for all Fijians.
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama
once again reminding the itaukei
community that their rights are intact
and safe under the constitution.
The constitution protects the rights of
the itaukei, your land is secure, the Fijian
culture is intact and it helps build the
GDP of the country, said Bainimarama.
The PM warning people should not
be moved by what he said was all the
political talks happening around them.
I want to make it clear that I was part
of the committee that reviewed the
constitution and all this talk that you
hear from political parties are all lies,

said Bainimarama.
Bainimarama reminded them that those
who choose to break the law will be
taken to task, as in the recent sedition
cases.
While in Tavua last week, I told them
to be careful of what you hear and how
it can create instability. We should make
our own decisions, for the better, and not
breach the law, said Bainimarama.

He even reassured the people of Ovalau

that there will be no more civil unrest.
When I was in the military we saw what
caused the upheaval in 2000 and 2006
that led to lives being lost, and I want to
tell you, the people of Ovalau that those
incidences will never happen again,
said Bainimarama.
The Prime Minister ended his official
visit in Ovalau.

First Officer Pratap, when asked on
her career aspirations, said if given a

Fiji Links First Officer Sonam Pratap

was part of a little history and indeed a
proud moment for all Fijians and females
in particular.
She, along with Captain Hartlene Yuen
and cabin crew members Varea Mani

all-female flight crew (pilots and cabin
crew) to Apia, Samoa.
This was on the ATR 72-600 aircraft.
This came just a week after an all-female
flight deck operated flight from Nadi to
Suva by Captain Yuen and First Officer
Pratap on September 1.
First Officer Pratap, after the flight,
expressed her excitement over the allfemale crew operated flight.
She said when she saw the all-female
team, they were all excited and took
selfies before departure (where the flight
departed early).
It was a nice experience. It was all girls
and it is not something you get to do
every day, she said.
Speaking of Captain Yuen, First Officer
Pratap said: Hartlene as a captain is a

India Donates 5000 Tablets To Lift

Learning Experience

INDIA has contributed 5000 tablets

to Fiji to assist students living in rural
areas.
Minister for Education Dr Mahendra
Reddy said this was one way Government
was investing in the education of the
future leaders of the country and to
improve their standard of learning.
In his address at the official handing over
of 210 tablets to nine schools in Namosi,
Mr Reddy said more than 200 schools
would receive the tablets.
He said students would also take turns
to work on it as well as learn the basics.
"This is how we are spreading the benefit
of this tablet project that we have for a
large number of schools, particularly
those schools in the interior and in the
islands that don't have any personal
computer or laptop," Mr Reddy said.
"We strongly believe that we have
to move towards a greater resource
mobilisation to digital literacy."

Majority Of Sodelpa MPS Wanted

Rabuka In

A majority of SODELPA MPs and

members wanted Sitiveni Rabuka back
to help the party earlier this year, it has
been revealed.
This revelation was contained in an
email from party financier and co-opted
management board member Sakiusa
Raivoce.
The email was sent to MPs and senior
party members. In it, he said he was
informed 10 out of the 15 SODELPA
MPs wanted Mr Rabuka to help the party
because of his leadership experience
as a former prime minister and former
commander of the Republic of Fiji
Military Forces.
Mr Raivoce confirmed the email but said
it was out of date.
When asked whether he still held the
same view about Mr Rabuka, he said:
My stand is always clear, I wanted him
to come back to the party but it is the
party decision for him not to come back
and I respect that.
However, it is not clear where that
party decision was made unless he was
referring to last year before the general
election. After the election loss and
the post-mortem there was certainly a
groundswell of support for Mr Rabuka.
Carrying on from the momentum of
that support, SODELPA president Ratu
Naiqama Lalabalavu offered Mr Rabuka
a vice-presidential position in the annual
general meeting that was originally set
for last Saturday. Mr Rabuka said he
was going to think about it because he
was rejected last year when he applied
to become party leader. Leading the
opposition against him was Ro Teimumu
Kepa and the womens and youth wings.
Ro Teimumu subsequently was elected
party leader and became Opposition
leader. Mr Rabuka was upset last week
when he saw Ratu Naiqama issuing a
joint statement and pictured with Ro
Teimumu saying they were united. He
then resigned from the party saying
those who disliked him because he led
the 1987 coups, had not changed their
position.
In his email sent last February, Mr
Raivoce wrote: We need to resolve the
issue on Major Gen Rabuka soonest.
For info, I was the one who informed
the Party President Col Waqausa and
members of his interview panel (PM
LQ.Tuimalekai, Jim Bulatavo) in the
presence of the Party Leader at our
meeting in June last year, that Maj

604.909.4088

Gen SLR is to step down and not be

considered as a candidate in the last
election, because our Youth and Women
Council was against his nomination.
The reason being is that he was
involved with the first military coup of
1987 ,all the ex-Army Officers now with
SODELPA ,was part of the coup of 1987,
I see no reason why we should not allow
him to come and help the party at this
time, because the military is still very
much involved with the current Govt.
The interview panel accepted my
proposal and Maj Gen SLR was
informed accordingly, that he was no
longer a candidate and later that evening
as protocol demand, the Turaga Tui
Cakau, Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu,who
supported Major Gen SLR to be a
candidate of SODELPA, was informed
by the party president Col Waqausa,
Savenaca Kamikamica and self.
Ratu Naiqama reluctantly accepted the
news, but did not want to hurt the party
as time for election was against us. He
told us that we should all support Ro
Teimumu to be the party leader.
There is a need now to allow Major Gen
SLR back into party, I need not elaborate
here his experience as a politician and
qualifications as former PM and military
commander.
I agree as Mere has alluded to, that
there is no disrespect for Ro Teimumu
our Party Leader, she remains PL and
LOP. Major Gen is coming to help, he is
a Military Strategist can be very useful
with our Task Force Team.
He has support from inside the party
and outside. Man Gen is a financial
member of the SODELPA, unless the
Party Constitution has changed. I am
informed that 10 of our current MPs
support Major Gen to come and help us.
I hope that NEC and the Management
Board will endorse this proposal from
the Western United Front (WUF) coordinator Luke Ratuvuki.
These are excerpts of a phone interview
with Mr Raivoce:
CAVA: Do you still hold that view and
that is for Mr Rabuka to come back to
the party?
RAIVOCE: My stand is always clear,
I wanted him to come back to the party
but it is the party decision for him not to
come back and I respect that. That was
then, we have moved on we dont want
to come back.
CAVA: Why not now? What changed?

info@fijitimescanada.com

RAIVOCE: I dont know I think I

better not comment on it because the
Annual General Meeting is coming up
and that will be discussed at the AGM,
we will leave it at that after the AGM on
Thursday.
CAVA: But do you think Mr Rabuka
should come back?
RAIVOCE: Look I served with him
as an officer and he is a member of
SODELPA, if he wants to come back, he
comes back.
CAVA: But do you want him to come
back?
RAIVOCE: Look I will reserve my
comment until the meeting because I do
not want to pre-empt what is going to be
said at the meeting. I might want him to
come back and then hes not going to be
appointed so I will leave my comment.
Ill reserve it.
CAVA: But why did you want to invite
Mr Rabuka?
RAIVOCE: That was in July or April,
he was my former Commander and
Prime Minister, I worked close with him
and I know his ability and capability but
it was at that time. We need to move on
so the party decided that he is not to be
received by the party so thats it, he did
not contest the elections, I dont think
we should bring back the issue now.
He has said it in the paper that you, Fiji
Sun, reported that he has resigned from
SODELPA so Ill leave it at that, I dont
want to comment again.
CAVA: During that time did you invite
Mr Rabuka because you saw that the
party was not performing and it needed
him?
RAIVOCE: No, No there is a lot of
people in the party who can perform
well.
The phone then went silent.

Blood-Covered Murder-Accused Was

'Proud' Of Killing

An Auckland man who stabbed his

partner to death told the dead woman's
niece "you are too late, she is no more",
a court has heard
Taxi driver Jiwan Ram,63, is on trial
accused of murdering Bimla Wati in
November last year.
Wati, 47, was found dead at her Mt
Wellington home after suffering six deep
stab wounds.
Ram admits killing Wati but is arguing
it was manslaughter rather than murder.
The Crown's first witness, Wati's niece
Rangeeta Gounder, told the court that
when she arrived home to the scene, she
encountered Ram at the front door.
He was covered in blood, she said.
"He said 'You are too late, she is no
more'... the way he said it, he was proud
of what he did, but his facial expression
was different - he was sad," she told the
court.
Crown prosecutor Dale Dufty said in
opening that the pair had been together
since 2013.
Last year the pair was renting a room
from Wati's niece who also lived at the
house, along with two other relatives.
On November 3 "a normal night" erupted
into violence after the two argued over
when to visit a family member, Dufty
said.
The two relatives heard the argument
erupt between Wati and Ram in the
couple's bedroom, which later moved
into the lounge. About 9pm the argument
became louder and Wati was heard
screaming.
Dufty said Ram was seen by one of
the relatives standing over Wati's body.
When he stood up, he allegedly pulled a
knife out of Wati's torso. She was stabbed
six times, Dufty said, the knife piercing
her lung twice, and cutting a main artery
near her heart.
Ram ordered the two relatives to leave
the house, which they did, and shortly
after, Wati's niece arrived.
"He opened the door and said, words to
the effect, 'you were too late, she is no
more,'" Dufty said.
Emergency services arrived within 15
minutes by which time Ram had sliced
his own wrists. Ambulance officers
pronounced Wati dead at the scene.
During a police interview, Ram said he
and Wati had argued over when they
should visit Wati's new grandchild.

Fijians Of Indian Descent Top Stats

The Ministry of Education revealed that
90 per cent of suicide cases involving
children were Fijians of Indian descent.
Minister for Education Dr Mahendra
Reddy said he was concerned that
majority of suicide cases involved
Fijians of Indian descent.
The revelation was made after three
students took their lives last week.
Mr Reddy said questions needed to be
asked as to why they were the ones that
heavily contributed to the rise in those
unfortunate cases.
"There needs to be an investigation, why
is it us and less iTaukei? Everyone here
is important the parents, the school.

"We need to know why they drank it,

where they got it from and how we can
address the problem to ensure that it does
not happen again."
Meanwhile, the minister also believes
legalising the Draft Volatile Substance
Abuse Decree could help control the abuse
of volatile substance that leads to death.
The Draft Volatile Substance Abuse
Decree which was spearheaded by the
National Substance Abuse Advisory
Council (NSAAC) looks at the control of
the sale of volatile substances including
glue and paraquat.
Under the draft decree, those wholesalers
and retailers who are found selling these

substances to children under the age 18

will be punished.
"Yes, I believe by legalising the decree
it can help decrease suicide but we
need to look at other factors concerning
the reasons why children abuse these
substances. But we will look at it being
taken up to be legalised."
In 2013, NSAAC conducted a wide
public consultation on the draft decree
but could not proceed with its legalisation
because of what was stipulated in
Chapter 3 of the Constitution.
"No person or body other than the
Parliament has authority to make any
law in Fiji."

Investing In Fiji
A COUPLE from Australia has opened
a new accounting firm in Toorak, Suva
with plans to create 10,000 jobs for
Fijians in the future.
Malcolm and Felicia Campbell have a
three-year plan to expand and diversify
their business from an accounting firm to
broad-based businesses, which will help
employ many people, improve the lives
of many Fijians and help contribute to
the economy.
Mr Malcolm said Sawanika Range
Financial Accounting Services had
been operating from their office at Amy
Street in Toorak for three weeks and had
employed two staff members with many
more to join as they expanded.

Mrs Malcolm said they were not

interested in the country's politics but
instead were trying to invest and help
develop the economy.
The couple had accounting backgrounds
in Australia's public and private sectors.
With that expertise, she said, they hope
to create more jobs in the country and
improve the standard of living.
Mrs Malcolm is originally from
Sawanika in Tailevu North and moved
to Australia in 1975. After 40 years,
she said, they decided to invest in her
homeland.
With the new initiatives introduced by
Government, she said, this had given
them hope to invest in the future of Fiji.

"I told my husband that this is an

opportunity for us to see what our
chances were in Fiji and to try and help
build the economy through investments.
"We are also planning to get about 10,000
jobs for young people in the future and
this is our three to 10-year plan.
"We don't want people to live in poverty
anymore people need a new life."
The accounting firm offered general
accounting services, loan and business
proposals, debt consolidation, auditing
and taxation and onsite visits for their
clients.
Mrs Malcolm said they were also
looking at developing five acres of land
in Korovou, Tailevu.

the crash happened.
My father had just placed his foot on

Fijian Detector Dogs Complete NZ

Training

Six Fijian detector dog teams have

completed their New Zealand training
and graduated last week in a ceremony
at the NZ Police Dog Training centre in
Trentham, Upper Hutt.
The Fiji Revenue and Customs Authority
(FRCA) and its New Zealand counterpart
have been working closely to establish a
detector dog programme in Fiji, which is
the transport and travel hub of the Pacific.
An effective detector dog capability will
enable the Fiji Revenue and Customs
Authority and Police to strengthen border
security and help counter organised
criminal groups using Fiji as a transit
point for illicit activities, FRCA chief
executive officer Jitoko Tikolevu said.
The teams that graduated last week are
world class and will play an important role
in mitigating the risk of organised crime
networks operating in the Pacific region.
This is a good example of the
collaboration between agencies in New

Zealand and Fiji working together with

the common goal to stem the flow of
illicit drugs, he said.
This will be the first time FRCA has had
a dedicated detector dog capability
until now Police detector dogs have been

used at the border.

The new teams are expected to be
operational in Fiji by the end of the year.
Fijis new detector dogs have been
sourced within New Zealand as well as
supplied by the Australia Border Force.

$503M For GDP

FIJI'S agricultural sector is expected to generate $503.4million

towards gross domestic product (GDP) this year.
According to the Finance Ministry's forecast, the agricultural
sector's contribution to GDP last year would increase by
$16m from estimated $487.4m that was recorded.
In the 2015 National Budget supplement, the ministry
forecasted the contribution to increase to $526.3m next
year and $548.2m in 2017.
The sector's contribution had increased since 2010
where it recorded $391.8m, $429.3m in 2011, $450.9m
in 2012 and $466.3m in 2013.
The central bank said agriculture was one of the sectors
that contributed to the sustainable growth path for Fiji
as it achieved its fifth consecutive year of economic
growth in 2014.
It said industrial activity gained further momentum over
the year, driven by increases in sugar, other food and
non-food production coupled with higher construction
activity, while the agriculture and forestry sectors
performed better compared with 2013.
However, the ministry highlighted that the sector's
contribution towards economic growth had been
declining over the years.
To address this problem, the Ministry of Agriculture
had developed the Fiji 2020 Agriculture Sector Policy
Agenda to modernise the sector and improve its regional
and international competitiveness.
According to the ministry, the policy agenda established
a long-term plan for the industry to address the issue
of food security, improving export performance, raising
investments into the sector.
It also aimed to generate employment particularly in
rural areas, while at the same time addressing global
challenges such as climate change.

NZ Approves Free Rugby Tv Broadcast

For The Pacific

Fiji and other Pacific Island countries

will get free-to-air coverage of many
games under a deal with SANZAR in an
apparent bid to recruit more players.
It is part of a rollout of more free-to-air
television to the Pacific Islands that will
mean eight countries get eight hours a
day of television - up from just 11 hours
a week now.
NZ Herald has reported that SANZAR
agreed to allow some rugby games to be
screened on free-to-air television in the
Pacific countries as part of the expanded
coverage, which will also include more
news, documentary and entertainment
shows from New Zealand.
The games will include some Super
Rugby and ITM Cup matches as well
as Rugby Championship Tests and is
expected to start early next year.
New Zealands Prime Minister John
Key said it is a nice gesture from South
Africa, New Zealand and Australia
Rugby which holds the television
rights to coverage of major Southern
Hemisphere rugby tournaments.

New Zealand Prime Minister John Key

The countries set to benefit from the deal
are Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, Cook Islands,
Niue, Vanuatu, the Solomon Islands and

Papua New Guinea.

NZ Rugby, NZ Cricket and Basketball
NZ have also signed up to the initiative
for more free television.
Key said the NZ Government will
put in NZD$400,000 a year to
help provide the equipment the
islands will need for the ramped up
coverage.
All of the major New Zealand television
networks and production companies had
agreed to provide programmes at no cost
to the Pacific.
Key made the announcement from Port
Moresby where he is attending the
Pacific Islands Forum Leaders meeting.
He also announced an extra NZD$100
million in aid to Pacific countries over
three years.
This takes the total aid into the Pacific to
NZD$1 billion.
Meanwhile, NZ Herald reported that
New Zealand and Australia have both
been criticized at the Forum for the
level of commitment they have given
on climate change.

Mother Fears For Son's Safety Over Prison

Brutality Claim

An internal investigation is being carried

out by the Fiji Corrections Service (FCS)
after allegations of brutal beatings on
inmates were received by this newspaper.
This was confirmed by FCS public
relations officer Kuini Waqasavou.
And an inmate's mother has questioned
the effectiveness of the Yellow Ribbon
program, claiming that her son has been
a victim of physical abuse.
Fearing for her son's safety, the mother
who did not wish to be named, is worried
that one day her son would be dead
because of the alleged brutality.
The mother said she saw her son once a

month in prison and during last week's

visit, she was appalled to see bruises and
cuts on his body.
"I've gone to see the Human Rights
Commission to lodge my complaint and
have also visited the Fiji Corrections
Service headquarters and an officer
that we spoke to said they would look
into the case as it was something the
headquarters was unaware of," she said.
She said her son had struggled to eat
the fruits the only thing allowed to
be given to inmates during visitation
when they were together last week.
"He had bruises all over his arm and a cut

on his head which seemed to have started

healing, he had a dislocated shoulder and
he couldn't chew his food properly.
"All he told us was that he did not know
the reasons behind the beatings but it had
been done to him and about five other
inmates."
She said her son informed her they were
likely to be assaulted further if they took
the matter to court.
"So much for this Yellow Yibbon
program, my son has already been
sentenced, they are already locked up
in dark cells, the only food they've been
given is a piece of cassava and soup."

Ubinesh Chand appeared before Nasinu
Magistrate Sufia Hamza and is charged with
criminal intimidation and damaging property.
Nasinu Police Prosecutor Raymond
Filipe says the alleged threat occurred
on Tuesday this week.
Magistrate Hamza handed a domestic

NZ Medical Team To Perform Free Open

Heart Surgeries

To save the lives of people from the poor

and the needy community, a medical
team of 65 from New Zealand is in Suva
getting ready to perform free open heart
surgeries at the CWM Hospital.
Friends of Fiji Heart Foundation has
brought this team to Fiji and they will be
in the country for a week.
The team has brought over a mini
hospital from New Zealand which they
are setting up at the CWM.
This will be the 10th year for the team
to perform heart surgeries in the country.
The 65 member medical team comprises
of cardiothoracic surgeons, cardiologists,
anesthetists, technicians, special theater
nurses, intensive care and ward nurses,
physiotherapists and a dentist.
Chairman of the Foundation Craig
Strong said a lot of work has been done
behind the scenes for the last 12 months
to be able to bring this team to perform
this life saving work.
He added all patients have been screened
by special surgeons from New Zealand

Friends of Fiji Heart Foundation Chairman Craig Strong

last month after their names were
forwarded to the team by the Ministry of
Health.
The team is led by former Fiji resident
Doctor Parma Nand who is the only open
heart surgeon that Fiji has produced so far.

The team also includes some other

former Fiji citizens.
Last year the team performed 22 open
heart surgeries and in the last nine years,
over 2,000 people have benefitted from
the Foundation.

Three Students Remembered

The recent deaths of three young children

in Suva, casts a dark shadow over World
Suicide Prevention Day.
On this day, stakeholders will get
together to reiterate that suicide is
preventable with a little help from
friends and specialists. The theme is,
Reaching Out and Saving Lives, and
Minister for Health Jone Usamate wants
to ensure that this isnt just rhetoric.
Suicide is having a major impact on
the lives of Fijians so such taboos must
be eliminated and the matter must be

604.510.4088

addressed transparently and without any

stigma attached.
A march will started from Suva Flea
Market and down to Ratu Sukuna Park.
The official programme for WSPD at
the Park included the commemoration of
those who have lost their lives to suicide.
Those commemorated were the three

students from a close-knit community in

Suva, who allegedly drank paraquat two
weeks ago. One died a day later caused
by internal injuries and his friends died a
few days later, a few hours apart.
The Mental Health and Suicide Prevention
Policy in Fiji will be launched next month
during the World Mental Health Day.

Education Minister Reddy Visits Family Of

Dead Boy

The Labasa family who lost their

18-year-old son, Vivek Narayan, in a bus
accident was paid a surprise sympathy
visit by the Minister for Education,
Heritage and Arts, Mahendra Reddy.
Narayan, a Year 13 student of Guru
Nanak Khalsa College, died after he
was alleged to have been hit and trapped
between two buses at about 2pm at the
Labasa Bus Stand.
His father Awadh Narayan of Tovata,
Labasa, was returning home from the
cemetery carrying his sons ashes when
Mr Reddy arrived.
Mr Narayan, 53, a heart patient, cried
when Mr Reddy hugged him.
His wife, Uma Wati, 46, told Mr Reddy
that the owners of the buses involved
in the accident and the Police had not
visited them.
She claimed the buses involved belonged
to Parmod Enterprises Limited and Dalip
Chand and Son Limited.
The wheelbarrow boys and some
witnesses at Labasa Bus Stand said the
bus from Parmod Enterprises Limited
which was parked in front reversed
and bumped Vivek who got trapped in
between the two buses, Mrs Wati said.
She said a driver rushed Vivek to Labasa
Hospital where he died at about 7.40pm.
According to the post-mortem report,
Viveks liver and kidney got damaged
and he had some internal bleeding.
The bus driver could have taken him

to hospital, but he remained seated on

the drivers seat counting money even
though the passengers informed him of
what he did.
Such rude and careless behaviour of
the bus driver must be questioned, Mrs
Wati urged Mr Reddy.
Mr Reddy gave them a sympathy card
and said the Education Office in Labasa
would conduct an investigation.
My team would contact the bus
companies and check with Police, Mr
Reddy assured them.
This is a sad incident because we
cannot bring your son back. We are
here on behalf of the ministry and the
Government to inform you that we care

for you and we will do whatever we

can, Mr Reddy told the family.
Mrs Wati prasied Mr Reddy for visiting
them when he arrived in Vanua Levu.
Vivek was a soccer player and he was
hardworking student. He promised that
he would look after us, unfortunately he
is not here.
It is sad because we cannot bring him back,
but we hope these things do not happen to
any other student, Mrs Wati said.
Police spokesperson Inspector Atunaisa
Sokomuri said investigations were
continuing and the driver was questioned
and released.
One of the bus owners, Parmod Chand,
did not want to comment.

Encourage A Culture Of Openness, PM

Tells Principals

Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama

urged principals to identify children and
young people in their schools who may
be at risk of committing suicides.
Speaking at the opening of the Fiji
Principals Association Conference in
Nadi, Mr Bainimarama said: "I ask
you as principals to make it a priority
to identify children or young people in
your own schools who are at risk. The
child who may be struggling because of
pressure at school or at home. The child
who may already be showing signs of
distress.
"All of you can help by watching out for
someone who may be showing signs of
depression or vulnerability. They may
be withdrawn. They may no longer be
communicating like they used to."

604.510.4088

"But if you suspect that something is

seriously wrong, don't hesitate to tell your
teachers or other community leaders.
And be especially nice to them. Because
teasing, harassing or bullying other
children can have tragic consequences."
"Above all, don't set unnecessarily
high demands that will make the more
vulnerable students feel marginalised.
Never humiliate them in front of their
peers. Treat them with respect, with care
and with understanding.
"Talk to these children yourself. Do what
you can to relieve the pressure on them.
Talk to their parents and try to work
through whatever problems may be
happening at home. Encourage a culture
of openness in your own school."

5-Year-Old Called Child Helpline

A five-year-old is the youngest caller
to have complained of being abused
through the Child Helpline services.
The helpline is an initiative under the
Ministry of Women, Children and
Poverty Alleviation contracted to the
non-government
organisation,
the
Medical Services Pacific.
Child Helpline Fiji project officer
Jiokapeci Baledrokadroka said it was
good to note that people had been taking
advantage of the Child Helpline service
which has a toll free number.
The toll free number 1325 and callers
will be able to speak to counsellors who
can fluently speak English, iTaukei,

Hindi and Rotuman.

She said they had received calls from
women, girls and children and the
youngest to use the helpline was a fiveyear-old.
I think this is supported by parents,
grandparents or whoever guardians who
was with the child, Ms Baledrokadroka
said.
The child is five years old and spoke
about forms of abuse, and some of the
things that they go through in their
homes or surroundings.
She said while people are making use of
the helpline, they also encourage people
to visit their headquarters at Waimanu

Road, Suva.
We have callers from Lau, Taveuni,
Vanua Levu, interiors of Viti Levu and
urban areas, Ms Baledrokadroka said.
We provide relevant information in
regards to abuse, regarding services and
therapeutically system to address issues
that are raised by callers.
We also do a lot of assessments since we
are not seeing the callers. We can only
hear, listen well and be able to gauge and
provide the kind of counselling that suits
a particular caller.
Internal referrals, medical, and legal aid
reference and counselling are provided
to people through the helpline.

Profit Is His Name - Houng-Lee

The first Chinese man to have arrived in
Fiji was Moy Ba Ling and that was in
the year 1855. Mr Ling then made Fiji
his home and now has more than 500
descendants living in Fiji and across the
globe.
One of Mr Ling's direct descendants,
Rod Houng-Lee, travelled to Fiji from
Australia to be part of the 160th Chinese
community anniversary celebrations
held at Sukuna Park in Suva.
Mr Houng-Lee, while sharing the story
of how his ancestor first settled in Levuka
in 1855, said his grandfather had started
a business called Houng-Lee which in

Chinese meant great profits. Somehow,

the people in Levuka then started calling
him by the name of his business instead
of using his name.
"So my father and everyone else had
always used Houng-Lee instead of
Ling and we now have more than 400
descendants all over the world," Mr
Houng-Lee said.
"In 1998 we had a family reunion which
was held here in Fiji, we had about 450
family members who turned up for that
reunion," he said
Mr Houng-Lee said the surname he
had now chosen to use was so unique

in the sense that if someone was using

Houng-Lee it meant they were one way
or another related.
"Houng-Lee is not a Chinese surname,
so if someone is using that surname
then we know we are related because
it all originated from my grandfather's
business," he said.
Officiating
at
the
anniversary
celebrations at the park in central Suva,
Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama
said since Mr Ling's arrival, Fiji's
Chinese community had enriched Fiji's
culture and helped develop the country's
economy.

The man alleged to have hacked 15 year

old Simran Sumital Singh to death has
been apprehended.
The incident left the Naria community in
a state of shock after the Penang Sangam
High School student was struck with a
cane knife together with her father.
Singh and her father were getting off a
bus when they were attacked.
After waiting for 5 hours, I was called
by the doctor. He said he wanted to talk to
me but I replied that I only want to see my
daughter. The doctor told me my husband
is fine but my daughter is no more, said
Rina Kumar (Mother of the deceased)
Mother of deceased Simran Singh is
devastated that her daughter is no more.
Her husband who bravely tried to
confront the killer is fighting for his life

at the hospital.
The family is still trying to come to terms
with the horrific incident.
We never had enmities with anyone. We
lived peacefully with everyone regardless
of race and religion, said Kumar.
Eyewitnesses even find it hard to
describe the brutality of the incident.
He came out with a knife and struck the
two. I was shocked at what I saw. We just
helped the father and daughter to get to the
hospital, said Panapasa Gani (Eyewitness)
The eyewitnesses chased the alleged
killer into the bush however were unable
to apprehend him.
For me its very brutal when I saw what
happened. Even the school children here at the
time of the incident were crying, said Gani.
With alleged killer now in the police

custody, distraught family hopes justice

will prevail.

British Airways Flight Catches Fire On Las

Vegas Runway, 14 Injured

A fire broke out Tuesday on an outbound

British Airways flight at the Las
Vegas airport, leading 14 people to be
transported for medical care for what a
fire official called "minor injuries."
A majority of the injuries came as
passengers slid down the inflatable
chutes to evacuate the Boeing 777, Clark
County Fire Department Deputy Chief
Jon Klassen said.
The incident occurred shortly after 4
p.m. (7 p.m. ET) and involved British
Airways Flight 2276, which was bound
for London's Gatwick Airport, according
to the McCarran International Airport's
Twitter feed.
Passenger Jay Jennings, who was one
of the injured, said it was "pretty scary
stuff."
The plane was getting ready to take off,
he said, when he heard a big thud. He
lifted the window shade and saw the
trouble.
"Just saw flames on the engine," he said.
The plane stopped and sat for what felt
like a minute, he said. Then the captain
came on the intercom and told the
passengers there was an emergency and
they needed to evacuate.
When one of the emergency doors

opened, smoke poured in. "Not safe, not

safe," someone said, Jennings recalled.
Flight attendants directed passengers to
safety, he said.
The Federal Aviation Administration
said the aircraft's left engine caught fire,
prompting the crew to abort the takeoff.
"Safety is always our priority," British
Airways
spokeswoman
Caroline
Titmuss said. "We are looking after
customers after an incident involving
Flight BA2276."
CNN Aviation Analyst and 777 Captain

Les Abend said pilots pull a "fire handle"

under such circumstances. It deploys fire
retardant to the specified area, cuts the
hydraulics and electrical systems to the
engine, and shuts off the air system in
the cabin. That means it was unlikely
smoke was getting in the cabin until the
emergency doors were opened.
Abend said crews practice evacuating
their airplanes frequently with the goal
of having everyone out in 90 seconds.
The flight had 159 passengers and 13
crew members aboard.

Brothers Booked For Stripping In Front Of

Woman Clerk In Vasai

Two brothers have been booked for

allegedly striping in front of a woman
clerk in the Vasai tehsildar office. The
brothers have called it a case of mistaken
identity. No arrest has been made.
The Vasai police has booked Dinesh Gupta
and his brother Nilesh under sections 509
(word, gesture or act intended to insult
modesty of woman), 504 (intentional
insult with intend to provoke breach of
peace and 34 (common intention) of the
IPC. The brothers had visited the state
government's Setu centre where people
can approach with their complaints of
delay in services provided.
The brothers allegedly wanted to get a ration
card in the mother's name. After failing to
get the card for a month they approached the
Setu office. One of them allegedly removed
his clothes and stood in his undergarment in
front of the woman clerk.
The brothers said that it was a case of
mistaken identity. They said that an
unidentified youth had stripped in front

604.510.4088

of the woman. The youth had some injury

marks on his legs and was finding it
difficult to stand in the queue. Frustrated
at the long wait, he stripped at around
5pm. He was beaten up by the staff and
he fled, the brothers stated. The brothers

said that they had tried to intervene but

got caught.
Police said that no arrest has been made as it
has not been established whether the brothers
are the culprits. The woman clerk too is not
certain about the identity of the suspect.

Government, ICBC And Police Team Up

To Get Tough On Distracted Driving

While government reviews B.C.'s

distracted driving penalties, ICBC,
police and the B.C. government are
teaming up to launch a month-long
distracted driving campaign across the
province.
One in four deaths on B.C. roads
involves distracted driving. It's time we
all commit to leaving our phones alone
and avoiding other forms of distraction
when we're behind the wheel.
This month, police are ramping up
their enforcement of distracted driving
across the province. Distracted driving
is the second leading cause of car crash
fatalities in B.C. and a leading cause of
crashes with pedestrians, cyclists and
motorcyclists.
Cell Watch volunteers will be roadside
across the province reminding drivers
to leave their phones alone. ICBC road
safety coordinators will also be visiting
community events with a driving
simulator the public can try. You can
take a stand against distracted driving
and encourage others to do the same by
picking up a free decal to display on your
vehicle at ICBC driver licensing offices
and participating Autoplan broker offices.
TELUS is also a supporter of this month's
campaign and has been working with
ICBC to help educate drivers about the
risks of using a cell phone while driving
through its smartphone and Internet
safety program, TELUS WISE.
The campaign features new radio
advertising, digital advertising which
will appear online and in restaurants and
bars, and television ads. You can view
an infographic on this month's distracted
driving campaign at icbc.com.
Quotes:
Suzanne Anton, Attorney General and
Minister of Justice
"The cost of a distracted driving ticket
in B.C. is only $167 the second lowest
in Canada yet the cost of a distracted
driving crash can be a person's life," said
Suzanne Anton, Attorney General and
Minister of Justice. "During our monthlong consultation, it was clear the public
firmly agrees that our fines are too low.
We are going to fix this. Over the coming
months, we will make our roads safer
with tough, fair, and effective sanctions
to curtail this alarming but preventable
problem."
Todd Stone, Minister of Transportation
and Infrastructure
"We're asking drivers to leave their

604.510.4088

phones alone and stay focused on the

road," said Todd Stone, Minister of
Transportation and Infrastructure. "When
you're distracted behind the wheel, your
ability to react quickly is significantly
compromised. In fact, you're four times
more likely to crash if you're using your
phone while driving."
Staff Sergeant Dale Somerville,
Program Manager, B.C. RCMP
Traffic Services
"If you choose to drive distracted and
put others' lives at risk, police will
catch you," said Staff Sergeant Dale
Somerville, B.C. RCMP Traffic Services.
"B.C. drivers know it's against the law,
but far too many still make excuses for
their behaviour, then continue to put
themselves and others at risk. That's
why we're cracking down on those who
cannot police themselves. Even when
you're at a red light or in slow moving
traffic you're still in control of a vehicle
and the law still applies."
Lindsay Matthews, ICBC's director
responsible for road safety
"Anyone who drives while distracted is
putting themselves and others on the road
at risk," said Lindsay Matthews, ICBC's
director responsible for road safety.
"Distracted driving is one of the leading
causes of crashes with pedestrians,
cyclists and motorcyclists. It's time we
all commit to leaving our phones alone
and avoiding other forms of distraction
when we're behind the wheel."
Juggy Sihota, TELUS vice president

of customer experience strategy &

operations, TELUS Health
"Distracted driving continues to be a
serious issue in Canada and we need
to take immediate action, said Juggy
Sihota, TELUS vice president of customer
experience strategy and operations. As
a smartphone retailer and provider of
the network that powers mobile devices,
we have a profound responsibility to
tackle distracted driving head-on and
encourage Canadians to make smart and
safe smartphone decisions. We want to
help draw attention to this issue, spark
a change in behaviour and encourage
others to help put an end to distracted
driving.
Regional statistics*:
Every year, on average, 30 people are

Every year, on average, 32 people are
killed in distracted driving-related
crashes in the Southern Interior.
Every year, on average, 15 people
are killed in distracted drivingrelated crashes in the North Central

Fire On Carnival Cruise Ship In

Caribbean

A FIRE has broken out on board the cruise ship Liberty, one of the Carnival fleet, as it was docked at the Caribbean island
of St Thomas, but no injuries have been reported among the passengers or crew, the US firm says.
THE fire began on Monday in the
vessel's engine room for unknown
reasons, said Miami-based Carnival
Cruise in a communique posted on the
firm's Facebook page.
"There were no reported injuries to
guests or crew. All guests are ashore in
St Thomas" and the crew is working
to confirm that the blaze has been
completely extinguished, the affiliate of
Carnival Corporation, the world's largest
cruise ship operator, said.
The US Coast Guard said that it
was informed of the incident, which
remains under investigation, and local
media reported that since the cruise
liner was docked at the time of the fire,
it was able to be evacuated relatively
quickly.
The Liberty, which has a capacity of
2974 passengers and 1160 crew, was

Children Thrown Out Of Class - For

Having Rulers 10CM Too Short
A UK secondary school put more than 40
pupils in isolation because they turned
up with the wrong stationery.
Parents say their children were removed
from classes at Magna Academy for
infringements including having a ruler
that was 10cm too short, bringing a
folding ruler instead of a straight one,
having a pencil case shorter than the
regulation 30cm and failing to pack a
pair of compasses.
Some 48 pupils were left reading in
the canteen after Monday morning's
crackdown, while they waited for their
parents to bring in the correct kit.
The principal of the school - which
teaches more than 600 pupils in Poole,
Dorset - has defended the measures,
saying the right equipment is 'vital' for
children's progress. But he is facing a

604.510.4088

backlash from parents, one of whom has

written to the academy to complain.
Hannah Sills, whose Year 8 daughter was
taken out of class, said: 'Instead of doing
history and double science, my daughter
was sitting in the canteen. They have lost
100 hours of education by taking those
children out, all because they feel they
need to instill this fear culture. I will not
have my daughter almost fearful to go to
school, which is why I have complained.'

The academy has seen a dramatic

turnaround over the last two years,
going from being in special measures
to receiving an 'outstanding' rating from
Ofsted.
Principal Richard Tutt said: 'Clear
requirements were communicated to
parents in July, then re-emphasised to
pupils last week. Pupils were returned
to lessons once [the missing equipment]

Calgary Woman Refunded Money After

Accidentally Leaving $525 Tip

A Calgary woman who accidentally left

a $525 tip at a trendy downtown bakery
over the weekend has been refunded her
money.
Pat Benedict purchased nearly $50
worth of bread, buns and other baked
goodies at the Sidewalk Citizen Bakery
last Saturday morning. Using her debit
card, she accidently left a tip of more
than 1,000 per cent.
The workers at the store didn't notice
how much Benedict had left behind in

gratuities until the end of the day when

they were cashing out.
The bakery's owner, Aviv Fried, said he
thought the generous tip was likely left
by mistake and tried reaching out.
Fried didn't have the customer's phone
number or know her name at the time. He
posted a message to his Twitter account
Monday in hopes of finding the customer.

In an update Tuesday, Fried said
customer's bank was going to contact the
"big tipper" to reimburse the $525.
Benedict later got a call from her bank
and returned to the bakery Tuesday
afternoon to collect her money.
"They said, 'Do you know you left about
a $525 tip?'" she said. "I said, 'No, I
didnt know I did that.'"

Man Bites Off Wife's Nose, Eats It For Not

Picking Up His Calls
In a gruesome incident in China, an
estranged husband reportedly bit off his
wife's nose and ate it after she did not
pick up his calls.
The pair, from the city of Dezhou in
China, allegedly got into a fight after
the woman did not answer her estranged
husband's calls after a late work shift
earlier this week.
Enraged, her husband apparently
stormed into her work place the
following day and attacked her, biting
off her nose and then swallowing
it, according to the People's Daily

Online.
The woman, identified only as Yang, told
Shangdong Television station, "And the
next thing I knew, he pushed my head
towards the way and ate my nose in one
go."
Doctors have claimed the damage to
Yang's nose is so severe she will require
extensive surgery. Almost her entire
nose, including the nasal septum, soft
triangle and nose tip, were eaten.
Surgeons believe it will be at least
three months before her nose can be
cosmetically reconstructed, British daily

The Independent reported.

The couple, who were both divorcees
when they married, appeared to have a
tumultuous relationship.
According to local news reports, Yang
claims her husband -- who had two
grown-up children from his previous
marriage -- attempted to sell the
couple's child so she could care for his
grandchildren. When Yang refused, the
couple separated, although she claims he
continued to ring her regularly.
Police are reportedly attempting to locate
her husband, who remains at large.

Russian Unhappy With Cosmetic

Operations Shoots Surgeon, Self

A Russian plastic surgeon died on

Tuesday after a patient upset over the
results of several operations gunned him
down and then took his own life.
The patient, 34-year-old Yury Lebedev,
shot the surgeon, named by media as
Alexander Remizov, in his office at
the Russian Railways hospital in the
northwestern city of Saint Petersburg on
Monday, investigators said in a statement.
"The presumed motive of the murder is
the man's unhappiness at several plastic
operations carried out at this hospital,"
investigators said.
Lebedev was angry at the results of
several nose job operations and a
procedure on his ears, prosecutors told
Fontanka.ru local news site. Remizov
reportedly oversaw his treatment but did
not carry out the operations.

604.510.4088

Lebedev shot the surgeon in the chest

with a hunting rifle, which he was able
to bring through metal detectors at the
entrance that had been switched off, the
hospital's chief doctor told journalists,
Fontanka.ru reported.
Lebedev, who had served for 10 years
as a submarine officer before moving to
Saint Petersburg, had difficulties with
his personal life that he blamed on his
appearance, Fontanka.ru reported, citing
his friends.
Police found a pile of correspondence

with the hospital about the operations in

Lebedev's flat, Fontanka.ru reported.
The most recent letter was from Remizov,
who reportedly wrote: "You should see a
psychiatrist."
The case comes just weeks after a similar
shooting of a urologist by a disgruntled
patient in far eastern Russia.
A 69-year-old man last month shot dead
the head of the urology department at a
hospital in the city of Magadan and then
shot himself after the surgeon reportedly
refused to conduct an operation.

Hot Chilli Receptor May Unlock A New

Treatment For Obesity

THAT burning sensation you get after gulping down a fiery chilli has Adelaide scientists hot on the trail of drugs
that could counter obesity.
The bodys so-called hot chilli
receptors, known in laboratories as
TRPV1, also block appetite and create
a feeling of fullness, according to
University of Adelaide researchers who
believe this natural occurrence could be
the foundation of new drugs.
Head researcher Associate Professor
Amanda Page, of the universitys School
of Medicine, said the study revealed a
deletion of the hot chilli receptor in mice
resulted in a delayed feeling of fullness
and the consumption of more food.
The stomach stretches when it is full,
which activates nerves in the stomach
to tell the body that it has had enough
food, she said.
We found that this activation is
regulated through hot chill pepper or
TRPV1 receptors.
The researchers also found that the natural
behaviour of the receptors may be disrupted
by high-fat diets, so could contribute to
obese people eating too much.
In a study of obese mice, the researchers
found a high-fat diet impaired the hot
chilli receptors in the body which signal
fullness.
If we knock out the receptor as well,
there is no change ... which suggests that
the channel is disrupted in high-fat diet
conditions, Prof Page said.
The researchers then tested lean mice,
who had the hot chilli receptor removed
through genetic modification.

Those mice were fed a normal diet and

were found to eat more than usual.
This suggests that the receptor is
involved in the regulation of food
intake, Prof Page said.
Prof Page said the research highlighted
the hot chilli receptors were involved
in sending signals to the brain and the
feeling of fullness.
This is disrupted in high-fat diet
conditions (and) it may be why its so
difficult to lose weight and maintain that
weight loss, she said.
Prof Page said the study could lead to
new drugs for the treatment of obesity.

If we target these receptors it could lead

to a possible treatment, she said.
Co-researcher Dr Stephen Kentish, of
the universitys School of Medicine,
agreed the findings could lead to the
development of new therapies.
The next stage of research will involve
investigation of the mechanisms behind
TRPV1 receptor activation with the aim
of developing a more palatable therapy,
he said.
We will also do further work to
determine why a high-fat diet desensitises
TRPV1 receptors and investigate if we
can reverse the damage.

Reasons To Store Vinegar In Your Medicine

Cabinet
Vinegar has long been a household staple
for cooking and cleaning. But it's also
used to cure tons of common ailments.
Here are five great reasons to start
adding a jar (or jug) to your medicine
cabinet too.
Banish Bruises
If you or someone you care about has
a nasty fall, you can speed healing
and prevent black-and-blue marks by
soaking a piece of cotton gauze in white
or apple cider vinegar and leaving it on
the injured area for one hour.
Soak Away Aching Muscles
Got a sore back, a strained tendon in

604.510.4088

your shoulder or calf, or maybe you're

just feeling generally rundown? Adding
two cups of apple cider vinegar to your
bathwater is a great way to soothe away
your aches and pains, or simply take the
edge off a stressful day.
Breathe Easier
Adding 1/4 cup of white vinegar to the
water in your hot-steam vaporizer can
help ease congestion caused by a chest
cold or sinus infection. It can also be
good for your vaporizer: The vinegar
will clear away any mineral deposits
in the water. Note: Check with the
manufacturer before adding vinegar to a

cool-mist vaporizer.
Treat an Active Cold Sore
The only thing worse than a bad cold is a
bad cold sore. Fortunately, you can usually
dry up a cold sore in short order by dabbing
it with a cotton ball saturated in white
vinegar three times a day. The vinegar will
quickly soothe the pain and swelling.
Get the Jump on Athlete's Foot
A bad case of athelete's foot can have
you hopping mad. But you can often
quell the infection, and quickly ease the
itching, by rinsing your feet three or four
times a day with undiluted apple cider
vinegar.

Physical Symptoms of Depression

Sleep Problems
Depression is a mental illness, but it can
affect your body as well as your mind.
Sleep problems, for example, can be a
symptom of depression. Trouble falling
asleep or staying asleep is common in
people who are depressed. But some
people with depression may find that
they sleep too much.
Chest Pain
Chest pains can be a sign of heart, lung,
stomach, or other physical problems.
See your doctor to rule out any serious
cause. But sometimes chest pains can
be a symptom of depression. There's
also a link between depression and heart
disease. Depression can raise your risk
of heart disease. Plus, people who've
had heart attacks are more likely to be
depressed.
Fatigue and Exhaustion
If you feel so tired that you don't have
energy for everyday tasks -- even when
you sleep or rest a lot -- it may be a sign
that you're depressed. Depression and
fatigue can feed off each other. According
to one major study, people who are
depressed are more than four times as
likely to develop unexplained fatigue,
and people with fatigue are nearly three
times as likely to become depressed.
Depression and fatigue together tend to
make both conditions seem worse.
Muscle Aches and Joint Pain
Pain and depression are closely linked.
Living with ongoing pain can raise

the risk of depression. And depression

itself may lead to pain, because the two
conditions share chemical messengers in
the brain. People who are depressed are
three times as likely to develop ongoing
pain.
Digestive Problems
Our brains and digestive systems are
strongly connected, which is why many
of us get stomachaches or nausea when
we're stressed or worried. Depression
can get you in your gut too, causing
symptoms of nausea, indigestion,
diarrhea, or constipation.
Headaches
People with depression often get
headaches. One study showed that
people with major depression are three
times more likely to have migraines,
and people with migraines are five times
more likely to become depressed.
Changes in Appetite or Weight
Some people lose their appetite when
they feel depressed. Others can't stop
eating -- it soothes their frustration or
misery. The result can be weight gain
or loss and, with weight loss, lack of
energy. Depression has been linked to
eating disorders like bulimia, anorexia,
or binge eating. In women, the link
between depression and anorexia or
bulimia is strong
Back Pain
Ongoing back pain may contribute to
depression. But depression may raise
a person's risk of getting back pain,

too. People who are depressed may be

four times more likely to get intense,
disabling neck or back pain.
Agitation and Restlessness
Irritability and restlessness may be related
to sleep problems or other symptoms of
depression. Depression raises the risk of
alcohol abuse or other substance abuse,
which also can contribute to irritability
and restlessness. Men are more likely
than women to be irritable when they're
depressed.
Sexual Problems
If you're depressed, you might lose
your interest in sex. Severe depression,
especially, can have an impact on sex.
People who are depressed are more
likely to use alcohol and drugs, both of
which can lower your sex drive. Some
prescription drugs -- including ones that
treat depression -- can also take away your
sex drive and affect performance. Talk to
your doctor about your treatment options.
Exercise
Research suggests that a regular exercise
program not only keeps you fit, but also
releases chemicals in your brain that
may make you feel good, improve your
mood, and reduce your sensitivity to
pain. Although exercise alone won't cure
depression, it can help ease it over the
long term. If you're depressed, it can be
hard to get the energy to keep exercising
-- but try to remember that exercise can
improve energy, ease fatigue, and help
you sleep better.

How To Plan A Successful Vacation With

The In-Laws

A vacation with your in-laws is a good

way to spend quality time with them and
build stronger relationships. But can a
peaceful vacation with the in-laws be a
reality? Whether you have fondly agreed
to a vacation or done it against your will,
vacationing with your in-laws can often
turn into a challenge. We give you eight
tips to plan a successful vacation with your
in-laws without it turning into a nightmare.
Identify a purpose.
There will be a reason why your husband
and you have decided to go on a vacation
with your in-laws. This could be because
he wants you to spend time with them
or he wants the children to get to know
them better or he wants to simply take
them out to relax and have a good time.
Once you know the purpose, you can
plan the itinerary accordingly.
Consult them while making the plan.
You may be in charge of making the
plan but be sure to discuss it with them.
You dont want to plan a cruise and

then realise that your mother in law

suffers from sea sickness. Consult them
thoroughly while drafting your itinerary.
This will also make sure that there arent
any future arguments about it.
Discuss monetary issues .
Hotels, meals, travel fare et al are
just basic expenses; there are a lot of
expenses that quickly add up. Discuss
beforehand how youre going to settle
bills. This way you will be prepared and
can eliminate many awkward situations.
Stay positive.
If you arent comfortable with your inlaws and have already foreseen it to be
a horrible week, then maybe it will be
horrible. Replace all negative thoughts
and tell youself that you will turn this
into the most memorable vacation of
your lives. Always be optimistic and
keep reminding yourself that this is
going to be a good week no matter what.
Have a backup plan.
Prepare a backup plan just in case your

in-laws decide to drop the mood bomb

on you. (Well, hopefully they won't.)
Be calm and find solutions.
There will be instances when things
wont go as planned. Instead of losing
your mind and triggering the breaking
point of your vacation, be calm and find
a solution. Remember you have already
put in a lot of effort into this.
Include personal time.
Make sure you have allotted some personal
time for just you and your husband, and
make it known to your in-laws. This is
your vacation too and you need not spend
every moment of it with them.
Make it special.
You have been on your best behavior
to survive this vacation; thats part one
accomplished. But wouldnt it be nice
if your in-laws actually remember this
vacation that youve put so much effort
into? Include a special surprise that will
make this a memorable trip for them as
well as yourself.

Steps To Help A Child Stop Lying And Tell

The Truth

All kids lie sometimes and usually, it

shouldnt be because for alarm. However,
when kids find that lying helps them
stay out of trouble or helps them gain
attention from their peers, it can become
a bad habit. Its important for parents
to address lying in a straightforward
manner that will promote honesty and
discourage dishonesty.
1. Establish a Household Rule about
Telling the Truth
Create a clear household rule that stresses
the importance of everyone telling the
truth. This will ensure that your children
understand your expectations and values
about honesty.
2. Role Model Honesty
Role model the behavior you want to see
from your child. This means, telling the
truth all the time. Kids cant distinguish
little white lies from other lies. So
dont let your child overhear you tell
your friend, I would love to help but I
have a headache, if youre feeling fine.
Your child will imitate what he watches
you do.
3. Talk about Telling the Truth Versus
Lying
No matter how old your child is, its
important to talk about honesty versus
lying. Young children often need help
understanding what it means to tell the
truth. Make sure your child has a good
understanding of what telling the truth
means.
Telling the truth versus brutal honesty
is another skill that children of all

ages can benefit from discussing. For

example, kids need to learn that they
dont necessarily need to announce to
their friend, Thats an ugly shirt, just
because its honest. Balancing honesty
with compassion is a sophisticated social
skill.
4. Distinguish the Reason for the Lie
There are three main reasons kids lie;
fantasy, bragging, or to prevent negative
consequences. When you distinguish the
likely reason for the lie, it can help you
develop a plan for responding to it.
Preschoolers often tell fantasy lies. If
your child says, I flew to Disney World
this morning, ask, Is that something
thats really true? Or something you
wish could be true? This can help
kids understand the difference between
reality and make believe.
If a child lies because hes bragging, it
may be that he has low self-esteem or
wants to gain attention. He may benefit
from learning new social skills and from
engaging in positive activities to boost
his self-esteem.
All kids lie to get out of trouble
sometimes. Its important that their lies
arent successful. Instead, make it clear
to kids that you will be double-checking
the facts.
5. Give One Warning
It can be helpful to give kids one warning
when you are fairly confident you caught
them in a lie. For example, say, Ill give
you one more chance to tell me what
happened. If I catch you lying, you will

receive an extra consequence.

6. Give an Extra Consequence
Give your child an extra consequence
when you catch him lying. For example,
instead of just taking away his electronics
for the day, give him extra chores to do
as well. Take away privileges or use
restitution as a consequence for lying.
7. Discuss Natural Consequences
Talk to your child about the natural
consequences of lying. Explain that
as a result of his lying, there will
likely be times that you wont be able
to believe him, even when hes telling
the truth.
8. Provide Positive Reinforcement for
Honesty
Catch your child telling the truth and
provide positive reinforcement. Praise
him by saying, I know that must have
been hard to tell me that you broke that
dish, but Im so glad that you chose to be
honest about it.
9. Help Your Child Re-Establish Trust
If your child has a bad habit of lying,
develop a plan to help him re-establish
trust. Consider establishing a behavior
contract that will help you know when
hes ready for more privileges based on
his willingness to be honest.
10. Seek Professional Help
There are times when lying can be a
big problem for children. If your childs
lying seems to be pathological, or it
causes problems for your child at school
or with peers, seek professional help to
address his lying.

Can Tonsils Grow Back?

My daughter had her tonsils taken out last year. But she's started getting the same kinds of sore throats that she got before.
Is it possible that her tonsils are growing back?
Elizabeth
It is possible for tonsils to partially grow
back. During a tonsillectomy, most of
the tonsils are removed. However, some
tissue often remains, so tonsils can
occasionally regenerate - although they
probably won't grow back completely or
to their original size.

If you're worried that your daughter's

tonsils are growing back, talk to your
doctor. But just because she still gets
sore throats doesn't necessarily mean
that her tonsils are growing back.
Tonsillectomies may result in fewer
throat infections, but kids can still get

some. Sore throats can also be caused

by other things, like colds, allergies, and
dry air.
If you're looking for medical advice,

How To Beat That Belly Bulge

If you've overdone it and look like you're
having a 'food baby', here's how to flatten
your tummy in no time.
Eat asparagus
It's rich in potassium, which helps
regulate the fluid balance in your body,
keeping bloat at bay. High-potassium
foods include bananas, cantaloupe,
mangoes, spinach, tomatoes and nuts. But
asparagus also contains an amino acid
called asparagine that acts as a diuretic to
flush excess liquid out of your system.
Slow down!
Eat slowly and chew carefully. This will
stimulate all your digestive juices. When
food isn't broken down sufficiently, it
can ferment in the gut, causing bloating.
Also, never eat on the run or while
standing up. Sit down, but straighten
your spine slumping makes it harder
for blood to reach your digestive organs.
Avoid large or late-night meals. Go for a
walk after dinner to help digestion.
No drinking while eating
Leave a 20-minute gap before and
after between eating and drinking
fluids. Liquid can dilute the stomach acid
needed to break down food. This can
lead to poorly digested food fermenting
and causing bloating. Many herbal teas
can help. Try fennel or spearmint.
Eat real bread
Most (95 per cent) commercial breads
are products of industrial process. Many
people are sensitive to the enzymes and
flour-improving agents used in these
kinds of bread. Unfortunately, these
don't have to be listed because they are
classified as 'processing aids'. If you
suffer bloating after eating bread, opt for
organic, artisan or sourdough bread.
Beware of artificial sugar
Some people have difficulty digesting
artificial sweeteners (especially sorbitol,
found in many sugar-free sweets
and gums), which can cause gas and
diarrhoea. Because sorbitol isn't actually
digested, it remains in your digestive
system where bacteria effectively 'picnic'
on it. One waste product of this feeding
frenzy is hydrogen gas, which causes
flatulence, stomach aches and bloating.
No fizzy drinks
Carbonated drinks (including diet
ones) can cause gas to get trapped in
your stomach. The fizz is due to carbon
dioxide gas bubbled into the drink. As
an alternative, drink water flavoured
with lemon, lime, or cucumber. If you're
feeling gassy and bloated, avoid tea and

604.510.4088

coffee as caffeine can cause indigestion.

Opt for ginger, peppermint and fennel
teas.
Watch your salt intake
Too much salt often contained in
highly processed foods and ready meals
adds extra sodium to body fluids,
stalling the mechanism that pushes
water out of your cells. Consequently,
the cells plump up with water, causing
the stomach to feel full. Most adults
need 1,600mg of sodium a day the
equivalent of about 4 grams of salt, less
than a level teaspoon. Replace salt in
cooking with pepper, herbs, lemon and
balsamic vinegar.
Try probiotics
Taking a probiotic supplement can
reduce bloating. Choose a supplement
over probiotic drinks or yoghurts as these
often contain a lot of sugar. Look for one
that contains at least 5-10 billion active
organisms and includes lactobacillus
and bifidobacterium cultures. Include
probiotic foods in your diet to help
feed the good bacteria in your gut. Try
Jerusalem artichoke, chicory root, garlic,
leek, onions, sauerkraut, asparagus,
banana, oats, apples and barley.
Don't have fruit for dessert
When eaten at the end of a meal, fruit can
cause bloating. It's best eaten separately.
Certain fruits have a beneficial effect on

the gut. Fresh papaya and pineapple have

natural digestive enzymes papain
and bromelain, respectively that aid
digestion and alleviate wind.
Try a little TLC
Aromatherapy oils can counter water
retention. It is particularly useful for
'bloated' conditions and can be added to
a warm bath (approximately 10 drops).
What to avoid
- Sugar (check labels for added sugars)
- Yeast and anything containing it
bread, beer, wine
- Malted products, such as those found in
breakfast cereals
- Alcohol, vinegar, especially balsamic
vinegar, pickled onions and gherkins,
soy sauce
- All fruits, except green apples, dried
fruits, fruit juices
- Moulds, such as mushrooms, hard and
blue cheese
What to eat

NAFSA Brawl Video Goes Viral

By Asuad Ali
The NAFSA soccer brawl caught on
video by a fan has gone viral on social
media and YouTube.
The heated confrontation reportedly
lasted few minutes involving players
from Flagstaff FC and Sacramento
Islanders soccer teams.
The video shows a number of angry men
screaming and throwing punches at each
other.
It is believed racial comments started
the fight at the conclusion of the quarterfinal match that local side lost in the
shoot-out.
Sportone spoke to a few Flagstaff FC
players who on a condition anonymity
admitted racial profanities fuelled the
altercation.
Sacramento
Islander
president
Vineshwar Goundar also admitted

on questions last Sunday that one of

his players made some sort of racial
comment that sparked the anger.
He said the mention guns and the fear
of escalating violence made him forfeit
their semi-final against Calgary Tavua.
The Sacramento Islanders were escorted
out of the park by police.
The brawl prompted new questions as
to whether the violent behaviour is the
result of lack of security and police at the
three day event.
Surrey resident Mahesh Kumar offered
a unique perspective concerning the
violence, telling Sportsone, The soccer
players off all things need police and
security at Fijian sporting events.
We have seen a culture of sports violence
in the community before and its about
time the organizers use the resources
towards publics safety.
A few thousand dollars wont hurt the

pocket. Injuries and loss of lives injuries

would forever hurt families and loved-ones".
NAFSA chairman Mukesh Naicker didnt
respond to email requests for comment.

I leave it on NAFSA board to make ruling

on the brawl and the ensuing threats. They
should be expeditious and without delay.
Attempts to get a comment from NAFSA

chairman Mukesh Naicker proved futile.

Calgary Tavua was awarded the match.
They will meet South Bay of America in
the grand-finale.

Islanders Forfeit Game Over Threat

By Asuad Ali

Sacramento Islanders forfeited their

semi-final game against Calgary Tavua
out of fear and was whisked away under
police cover at North Surrey Oval.
The walkout stemmed after their quarter
final shootout win against Flagstaff FC.
President Vineshwar Goundar told
Sportsone that a fight broke out at the
conclusion of the game after one of
his players hurled a racial slur on a
prospecting Flagstaff FC player.
Im told one of my players made a racial
comment during the post game handshake
and thats when a fight broke out, he
said. While I condemn the actions of the
player it is my responsibility to provide
safety to the team.
My players were threatened. Worse
enough guns were mentioned.
Goundar said as players from both the
sides milled on the soccer field its when
he called it a semi-final.
We were outnumbered by the opposing
players at the conclusion of the quarterfinal game and with safety first approach
we sought police officers help to be
escorted out of the park. Its not worth
risking lives and theres no place for
violence in football.
He urges NAFSA to look into the
seriousness of the threats so similar
incidents dont happen in the near future.
