Q.1 A) Attempt any SIX of the following:

a. Draw symbol of SUS, SBS, LASCR, DIAC.


b. Define following with respect to SCR

c. List the mechanisms with which SCR can be turned on.


d. List two advantages of pulse triggering method.
e. Draw static and dynamic equivalent circuit for series connection of SCRs.
f. List the factors affecting operation of series combination of SCR.
g. State two advantages of three phase rectifier over single phase rectifier.
h. Define ripple factor State value of ripple factor for three phase half wave and
three phase full wave uncontrolled rectifier.

a. An SCR is to be used as controlled rectifier. Suggest which commutation method


for it. Draw circuit and state how SCR will get commutated.
b. In an application, SCR is triggered using pulse triggering method. The
specifications of SCR used are
Turn on time = 100 micro S.
Vgmin = 1.5V
A pulse of amplitude 2V and pulse width 0.2 mS is used to trigger SCR.
State, whether SCR will trigger or not. Jusify your answer.
c. Draw class D commutation method. Name commutating components. State
function of each commutating components.
d. State necessity of parallel combination of SCRs. State reasons of unequal
distribution of current.
e. In a dc application, dc voltage of 500V is to be blocked. State, how this can be
achieved using SCRs with forward blocking voltage VBO = 100V. Draw its circuit
diagram.
f. Distinguish between symmetrical and asymmetrical single phase half controlled
bridge rectifier.

b. State the difference between GTO and conventional Thyristor in terms of
commutation and also state any two advantages over conventional Thyristor.
c. Draw Class E commutation circuit. What is the function pulse generator in Class
E commutation.
d. Draw the waveforms of supply voltage ES, load current IL and load voltage EL of
Class F commutation.
e. Draw the circuit diagram of Class B commutation. State the function of each
commutating components.

a. Draw circuit to control intensity of ac bulb using TRIAC. Describe its working.
Name triggering and commutation method used in this circuit.

b. Draw single phase half wave controlled rectifier with resistive load. Describe its
working. Draw voltage waveforms across input, SCR and load.
c. Draw three phase half wave controlled rectifier with resistive load. Write
expression for dc out put voltage. What is the meaning of discontinuous conduction.
Draw output waveform for this condition, specifying firing angle.
