The Faculty of Science offers many programs in a variety of


areasofstudy.Althoughitisnotrequiredthatyoudetermine
yourprograminyourfirstsemesteratUniversity,yourchoiceof
program will affect the courses in which you will wish to
register.Itisrecommendedthatyouchooseaprogrambythe
commencement of your second year to ensure that course
sequencingrequirementsdonotdelaygraduation.

The Faculty of Science primarily serves students who are


seeking a Bachelors degree in the Life or Physical Sciences.
However,wealsoprovidetheopportunityforstudentstomeet
admission requirements to other Professional Programs, and
offerjointprogramswithvariousotherinstitutionstofacilitate
student mobility and increased expertise in applied and
technicalscience.

BachelorsDegree

A Bachelors degree is often referred to as a 4year


undergraduate degree. A Bachelors degree consists of 120
credit hours (approximately 40 courses). It is made up of
coursesbelongingtoamajorandelectives.

A Bachelor of Science Honours degree is a more intensive


programofstudythatrequiresanincreasednumberofcourses
within the major, as well as a final year research project.
StudentsinterestedinanHonoursdegreemusthaveanoverall
average grade of 75% or higher. If you are interested in an
Honoursprogram,pleasecontactyouracademicadvisor.

Certificates

Certificatesareshortprogramsthatmaybecompletedin30.0
60.0 credit hours. They do not carry the same weight as a
Bachelors degree, but indicate that an individual has some
backgroundinaparticularareaofstudy.Certificatesaregood
for students who intend to study only parttime, or who are
unsureiftheywishtocommittoafullBachelorsprogram.The
creditfromaCertificatecanoftenbeappliedtoafullBachelors
degreeatalaterdate.

A Major is the primary area of study developed during a


Bachelorsdegreeprogram.MajorsinSciencerangefrom51.0
to93.0credithours,anddefinetheprogramofstudy.Astudent
must select at least one major in order to complete a
Bachelorsdegree.

A Preparatory degree program is a program (typically a


Bachelors degree) that students may work towards
concurrently with their preprofessional program. Choosing a
preparatorydegreeprogramwillaidinelectivecourseselection
and ensure that the student is developing their background
knowledgeinarelatedfieldofstudy.

For example, a student interested in Medicine may wish to


declare Biology as their preparatory degree program, so that
theyareworkingtowardsagreaterunderstandingofbiological
systems while they continue to apply for admission to medical
school.

StudentsinterestedinProfessionalProgramsareencouragedto
considerthat,duetothecompetitivenatureoftheseprograms,
veryfewapplicantsaregrantedadmissionontheirfirstattempt.

In fact, many students complete a Bachelors degree prior to


beingacceptedtoaProfessionalProgram.

Studentsregisteraccordingtoaprioritysysteminwhichthose

Inexceptionalcircumstances,studentsmayrequestpermission
fromtheAssociateDeantorepeatacourseasecondtime.

Whenacourseisrepeated,thegradeobtainedinthefinal
authorizedattemptbecomesthegradeofrecordforthat
course.Thismeansthatifyourepeatacourse,thefirstgrade
willnotbeincludedinthecalculationofyourUGPA,butthe
secondgradewillforbetterorforworse!

TheFacultyofSciencealsoadherestocoursesequencing.This
meansthatonceyouhavemovedforwardinaparticularcourse

preventyoufromregistering.Youwillnotbeabletoregisterin

The explanation of the restriction is given under the status


column. Sometimes, special permission can be obtained to
