1. (2 points, 0.5 each) True or False?
a. It is not OK to incorporate selections of an old paper you wrote from one
class into a new paper for another class without citing the previous paper.
TRUE
b. Sources only need to be cited if you quote directly from them. FALSE
c. An image that you cut and paste from a government website (i.e. from the
public domain) to use in your paper needs to be cited. TRUE
d. Unpublished information, like ideas in your professors lecture or an
interview with your neighbor, never needs to be cited. FALSE

2. (1 point) Plagiarism is simply copying anothers work, word for word without
quotation marks. Agree or disagree with this statement.

Plagiarism is not simply copying the work of someone else verbatim without quotations
or citation; plagiarism can be when the ideas of others are used without citation, or
when the structure of sentences and arguments are used when paraphrasing from a
source. There are many ways that plagiarism can be committed.

3. (1 point) Your reputation and the reputation of the University of Texas as a whole
may be affected by academic dishonesty. Explain the relationship between
reputation and academic dishonesty.

The consequences of plagiarism can be more severe and far-reaching than simply a
failing grade in a class because this academic dishonesty can create a record that will
be attached to the individual for a long time and impact their future opportunities.
Academic dishonesty also negatively impacts the reputation of the institution of the
University of Texas as a whole.

4. (2 points) A student submits a rough draft of a term paper. The student was
behind and barely finished the paper on time. He/She copied and pasted
sentences from his/her source material, changed the wording a bit, and cited the
sources properly. The student is really bummed because he/she was given a zero
on the assignment and was reported to the Deans Office for plagiarism. How could
the student have avoided plagiarism? This question should be answered with a list
of at least 4 suggestions.

The student could have avoided plagiarism by beginning work on the paper earlier to
give them ample time to write original work. They also could have avoided plagiarism by
giving him or her enough time to finish, even if it meant getting a late grade. They could
have used the sources simply as a source for ideas, not wording, sentence structure, or
argument structure. They should not have copied and pasted any part of their sources.

5. (2 point) The instructor for a lab class did not give any specific instructions about
collaboration on a homework assignment but the questions require data generated
by the class as a whole. A student submits a homework assignment with tables
and graphs he made with his lab partner while his written answers were completed
solo. Explain if this is a case of academic dishonesty or not.

Yes, this is a case of academic dishonesty because the collaboration was unauthorized.
The data was generated by the class as a whole, but the tables and graphs should have
been generated by the students individually if the instructor had not given explicit
information that collaboration is allowed.

6. (2 point) On occasion a student re-takes this course. Explain why it would not be
acceptable for a student to resubmit in a new semester the same final writing
assignment they wrote previously for this same class.

This would be a case of multiple submissions, which is prohibited by the universitys

official definition of academic dishonesty. This is only permitted if the student receives
prior approval by the instructor to turn in the same writing or writing that is changed
slightly and supplemented. Multiple submissions is a deceptive act where an
assignment was not created for the present course; it constitutes self-plagiarism and
also gives the student an unfair advantage over other students in the course.
