MONEY IS THE ROOT OF ALL EVIL

The famous American author, Louisa May Alcott once said that, Money is the root of all evil,
and yet it is such a useful root that we cannot get on without it any more that we can
potatoes. Humans rely on money for a better life as much as they rely on water to live. The
world does not necessarily need money. There are many other different ways of currency. If
money did not exist, this earth would have definitely been a better place. Is money the route
of all evil? In my own opinion on, in todays society people are starting for forget what real
life is about, because so many peoples lives revolve around money. I have a hypothesis that
states that money is a good thing to have, and a bad thing to have
Money, the root of all evil, has shaped our world into a corrupt nation, a people without a
conscience, and a society of very scrutinizing and greedy human beings. Our nation, as
corrupt as it may seem, has not always been this way. The leaders neglect the needs of the
people and concentrate on only accumulating their wealth. Good examples of this sinister
behaviour are hostage situations. Their main objective is to receive large amounts of money.
They overlook the fact that they are putting innocent lives in danger. Money, we cant live
with it, but we cannot live without it. As an example, the 1MDB controversy had been
featured prominently in the local press for months but few Malaysians understood what it
could mean until the WSJ report. It now resonates with many Malaysians who are struggling
with the rising cost of living. The alleged mismanagement of a state fund makes many poor
Malaysians resent paying the new broad-based consumption tax.

Money creates people that have no regard for their conscience. They believe that money
equals happiness. If they obtain the money, they assume that everything including friends,
popularity, and a celebrity lifestyle, will immediately follow. It is the centre of their life and all
that they strive for. Money has the power to warp a persons mind and personality. The
thought of obtaining it can cause a person to lie, cheat, and do everything in their power to
get them closer to it. Decent people can turn their lives upside-down when they learn how
fast they can get money through illegal acts. There are people who love money more than
they value life - whether it is another's or their own. Such people are ruthless, reckless and
dangerous. As long as they can have monetary gain, they would not hesitate to rob, to
destroy and to kill. These people are capable of all kinds of evil. This will cause criminal
cases in our nation to increase. Nowadays, people are will to do anything illegal just to earn

money and they can live happy luxury life. As an example, cases such as murderer cases
are done by people who are desperate for money. They have no choice.
Money becomes a person's master if that person values material possessions above
everything else. Many people do not realize that they are enslaved by money. However, you
know they are when making money is the top priority in their lives. They work long hours
every day and have no time for their families or friends. This often leads to marital problems,
broken homes, neglected children, loneliness and much misery. Parents also busy earning
money as the living costs are expensive and they need to pay taxes such as good and
service tax. Parents need to fulfil their childrens need such as food, shelter and education.
Whereas poor people could not fulfil their basic needs and they tends to involve in illegal
activities such as selling drugs and kidnaping. Money is the cause the people to involve in
unhealthy activities. This phenomenon also cause social issues to keep increasing in
Malaysia. Poor families who could not effort their family due to increasing living causes tends
to dump their baby.
Destruction of the environment is another example of evil caused by greed. Toxic waste is
being dumped indiscriminately because it costs money to dispose of the waste properly.
Fishermen who want a bigger haul to earn more money resort to using fishing methods
which destroy marine life such as dragnet fishing and the use of dynamite. Vast amounts of
forests have been cut down to make timber merchants rich and property developers wealthy.
The money is said to be the root of evil because man have a wrong usage on it. Actually,
money is just a medium of exchange. Money does not have brain to think how to hurt
people. It is the thought of human that used money as a tool for evil purpose. Many of them
did wrong looking for a quick buck or two and end up doing some action that hurt another
people. But they blame all the fault on money in fact is their brain that cause the evil. Money
or rather, the love of money is the root of all evil in the world today. But I do not think it is
responsible for all evil. In fact, money can be used for good too. Money, if channelled to
finance important research work, will help to find solutions to some of the problems we face
today such as incurable diseases. Money can be used to help those who cannot help
themselves by providing special care for people with mental or physical disabilities, for
instance, or helping to feed victims of famines, floods and war.

Money, Money, Money, Money some people say that money is the root of all evil, but even
so, it is realized that one cannot survive without it. Money is a necessity, and most everyone
can agree to the fact that financial security can make ones life easier. To conclude, I would
4

say that money is a good servant but a bad master. It can be used for good but if one is
controlled by it, then only evil will result.

REFLECTION
First of all I would like to say a big thank you to our honourable lecturer Mr
Subramaniam kolandan who had gave us a golden opportunity by giving English Language
Proficiency course work because I had learned many new values by completing this course
work.
I had faced many difficulties in completing this course work. I have taken some
initiatives to overcome the difficulties as soon as possible. I solved the problem by have a
visit to our campus library. My friends and I went to the library and searched for books which
can help us to find the points. I found a book which helped me to write the introduction and
conclusion. So I managed to write the introduction. I also consulted our lecturer in finding the
points. He had advised us and gives some ideas to find the points. The next day, our lecturer
thought us on how to write the essay. I also asked for my sisters help in finding the points.
She had made a favour for me by giving some points which are absolutely correct.
I also surf in internet regarding to my topic to make my essay more interesting. I didnt
depend on the news from internet because sometimes it may be wrong or fake. I also asked
for ideas from my classmates. They have helped me in a lot of way. For example, when I
have some doubt they help me to solve it. I would like say thank you for them.
As I said I learned many moral values by completing this course work. I learned that
sharing is very important. My friends have shared their ideas with me. Moreover I found that
we should cooperate with our friends so any work can run smoothly. I also realise that I have
been discipline during completing my course work. I had planned my work so I would not be
burning the midnight oil. I learned that time is gold and planned to finish my essay before the
due date. I also realise that I am weak in computer skill because I face some problems
during completing the course work and my friend had helped me. I also realise that where
the will there is a way
I would like to give my own opinion about the course English Language Proficiency.
This course helps me to gain much knowledge about the language. Moreover it helps me to
improve my talking skill in English as we need to communicate in English during the lesson. I
also learned the correct uses of grammar. Moreover, I realised my mistakes while
communicating in English and learned new words. This course had gave me many benefits
and I think the period of lesson should be extended 4 hours per week rather than 2 hours per
week so we can be a good communicator and excel in the language. I also think this course
should have conducted examinations so students will really learn the language properly.

At last, I would like to use this opportunity to wish a great thanks to all who have given
hand to complete the course work especially our honourable lecturer, friends and family
members. This course work has improved my language skill and helps me to repair my
weakness in language. I also learned many new words which helped me to enrich my
vocabulary. In a nutshell, I am very satisfied with my work and I believe that I have given my
best by completing my course work.
