The latest statistics from the Canadian Rental

Housing Index, www.rentalhousingindex.ca,
place Strathmore as one of five areas in Alberta
with critical rental affordability.
Citizen Relations for a Canada-wide partnership
of housing organizations that began in November
last year, released the index based on Stats Canada 2011 statistics, which reveals that affordable
rental housing is not just a big city issue. It shows
many renters in small towns and communities financially struggling to make ends meet.
Really what it does is document and substantiate what people have been thinking for awhile
now, but now we have some hard numbers, said
Ron Schlegelmilch, Executive Support for the Alberta Network of Public Housing Agencies (ANPHA).
He said to address housing issues, coordinated
efforts need to involve all government levels and
the community resources.
It is not always about money, it is how we can
get governments, municipalities and communities
to make a difference, said Schlegelmilch.
He said the first priorities were to establish the
need and then to begin to form strategies.
Approximately 27 per cent of those renting in
this area are spending 50 per cent of their income
or more on their rental accommodations. With an
average income of under $50,000, this doesnt
leave much for the other living essentials.
Schlegelmilch said that it is well documented
that affordable housing has a great impact on
other areas of social issues including education,
health and policing. He said they all work together to support healthy communities.
There is a call for federal, provincial, and municipal governments to address rental-housing issues, before serious homelessness numbers rise.
Anything done to reduce these numbers is
very much needed and appreciated. said Schlegelmilch. Our objective (ANPHA) is to raise the
awareness and need for affordable housing with
municipalities and with the provincial government. They kind of go hand in hand. Provincially
you talk about policy and municipally about delivery.
He said that representatives from ANPHA will
come out to speak to municipalities or agencies
to inform and help interested parties brainstorm
solutions and strategies to increase affordability
in their areas. He said they have been in contact with the new provincial ministers of Seniors,
Health, Human Service and Municipal Affairs to
advocate for more funding.

Senior Power 2015 a success

Laughter and chatter filled the Hope
Church foyer on Sept. 11, where a good
turnout for the 2015 Senior Power
conference kicked off. Various agencies had set up booths, manned with
knowledgeable staff, giving area seniors good information on lifestyle
choices. Some of the booths were: WFCSS, Strathmore FCSS, the Strathmore
Library, Alberta Finance Consultants,
Wheatland Lodge, the Happy Gang,
Office of the Public Guardian, Bridging
the Gap and Wheatland Lodge.
The two speakers were Mel Foat and
Kris Penmann. Foat gave a moving account of his journey through sudden
blindness and introduced his seeingeye dog Walker, then gave demonstrations of Walkers skills and discipline.
Penmann, a peace officer with Wheatland County, walked seniors through
the many ways scam artists were try-
ing to take money from the public and

gave tips on how seniors can protect
themselves.

Services launched their Seniors Resource handbook and gave copies out
to the audience.
We tried to think of every kind of
service seniors could use and need and
included them in the handbook, said
Lynn Walker, WFCSS coordinator and
MC for the conference. Walker kept the
program light and fun by interspersing
presentations with jokes that seniors
could share with their friends.
A hearty soup and sandwich luncheon was cooked and served by
Bridging the Gap staff.
The afternoon left time for visiting
and breakout group sessions,with the
topic of giving back to the community
and brainstorming services that would
be beneficial to seniors in the Strathmore Wheatland County area.

Terry Fox fall campaign hits 35th year

With over $2.9 million raised for cancer, locals are donning their runners to
participate in area Terry Fox events.
Schools are gearing up with runs
from Sept. 17 to 26, allowing students
to dissipate some of their energy to a
good cause.
The last couple years we have had
less than 25 people come out, so my
goal is to encourage 350 people to sign
up and raise $3,500 this year, said organizer Tracy Cornette.
The Terry Fox Run is celebrating its
35 anniversary and Cornette said volunteers man all the runs. It is not part
of the Canadian Cancer Foundation, it

is an independent organization.
Its an amazing ground roots organization, said Cornette.
Eighty-four cents of every dollar
raised goes to research. Amazing stories and news of recent research efforts

website.
The run is set for Sept. 20, starting in
Kinsmen Park. Participants can walk,
roll or run the 6 km paved course. It
is free to participate and water stations
will be set up to keep participants hydrated. Those who cannot participate
can contribute online as well.
Registration for the race begins at
10:30 a.m. in Kinsman Park.

Q: What is Embalming?
A: Embalming, by definition, is the process
of chemically treating the dead human

body to reduce the presence and growth of
microorganisms, to temporarily inhibit organic
decomposition, and to restore an acceptable
physical appearance. This process is usually
performed by injecting a formaldehyde
based chemical into the arterial system.
The formaldehyde reacts with proteins
in the body and renders them unsuitable
for microorganisms to grow on. This is
a temporary situation and the body will
eventually decompose naturally depending
on several external factors such as the type
of casket and soil conditions. Embalming is
not legally required except when transporting
across borders or with public transportation,
although many funeral homes require
embalming if there is to be a public viewing.

Volunteer Drivers to assist us with the KARE (Kind,
Accessible, Reliable, Economical) Volunteer Driver
Program. The purpose of the KARE Volunteer Driver
Program is to assist those who do not have access to
affordable, inter-municipal transportation (between
communities) for their Healthcare and personal
appointments/errands.
We require a minimum of Six volunteers to start the
program and our goal is to have at least 10 by the

When Langdon resident Lyndsey
Koskimaki, who herself has special
needs, heard about two-year-old Kaiden Dresslers brain tumour, she was
touched and wanted to do her part by
fundraising to support the family.
On Aug. 14, she decided to do a lemonade stand and the money she raised
went to cover the costs of what the
Dressler family has to pay for Kaidens
treatments.
The reason why I did this is because
Kaiden deserves the money to get better and become a healthy normal kid,
said Koskimaki. We did it in front of
Langdon and we actually posted a lot
of posters, so everyone can come by
and donate the money to Kaiden.
A few tears were shed as Koskimaki
celebrated her 18th birthday by presenting the $24.65 from her lemonade
sales to Kaidens parents, Erik and Ashley, at the Kaidens Journey Fundraiser
at Cheadle Hall on Sept. 12 and they
could not be any more grateful to the
amazing turn out to support their sons
recovery efforts.
We had no idea, it was a surprise,
said Eric Dressler. It kicked off the
whole night. It really set the tone and
she is one amazing young lady. It just

Dressler mentioned his family could
not be any happier with people that
came out and supported Kaidens
cause.
All weve had is consistent support,
said Dressler. From family members
coming out to support us to events like
tonight in Cheadle, it is unbelievable.
As I was saying in the speech there, you
have 200 people in the crowd, probably 75 per cent I havent met before
and all you can tell in their eyes is they
care as much as family and friends.
Dressler best described the experience as just living in the moment and
every moment spent with their son is
valuable.
The total fundraised through the auction, bar and the GoFundMe account
was around $40,000 and all the proceeds went to the family.

We have the perfect storm for a
housing crisis, said Brigitte Witkowski,
president of the Canadian Housing and
Renewal Association. Federal funding
for social housing is set to expire, cities
are becoming more and more unaffordable and low income Canadians from
coast to coast to coast are experiencing
wait times of many years, before being
able to access social housing.
And to top it all off, our current social
housing stock is in major need of major
repair and renewal. At this point, federal investment in all forms of affordable
housing is urgently needed.

A grassroots protest against election
of NDP candidates was organized and
according to participant and spokesman for the group, John Satink, 300 to
400 people gathered in front of the Alberta legislature this week, to indicate
they were unhappy with the NDP governance.
We are not affiliated with any political party. We are just against the NDP.
We are down-to earth people, the kind
that walk out of the field, onto the road
and talk to one another, said Satink.
The group aims to talk about why a

federal NDP government would not be
good for Albertans.
They plan to hold meetings and protests throughout Alberta and have a
scheduled event at the empty Cal Frac
buildings along Highway 1 west of
Strathmore, Sept. 19 starting at noon.
Satink said Wheatland County is allowing them to use the secondary service
road near the property and they plan to
have some trucks lined up to advertise
their cause.
I just want everyone to come out and
say what they think, said Satink. It is
critical that we stand up for Alberta.
September is Arthritis Month Awareness in

Canada. An estimated 4.6 million Canadians over
the age of 15 report having the disease and by
2036, that number will increase to 7.5 million. It
is not a disease that affects only the elderly. About
56% of arthritis sufferers are under 65. A new
arthritis diagnosis is made every sixty seconds in

Breastfeeding mothers should check with
their doctor or pharmacist when taking new
medications, over-the-counter or herbal products.
Some products will appear in the breastmilk and
could be harmful to the baby. Before you take it,
talk about it.
Another area of research into the use of the
chemicals in marijuana is in the treatment of the
common behavioural symptoms of Alzheimers
patients. These include anxiety, depression, sleep
problems, agitation and aggression. Early doubleblind studies didnt show much improvement
of these symptoms perhaps due to conservative
dosing but future testing will use higher doses.
Its good to live in Canada. A report released
recently in the U.S. said that a half million
Americans had more than $50,000 in prescription
drug costs and 139,000 had costs of more than
$100,000. Much of these costs were related to
cancer and Hepatitis C treatments.

of Bassano. I want to promote Bassano as a place to raise families. With
more families moving into the town, it
will create the need for more services
and help the town to grow.
I ran for the NDP in the Provincial
Election and am now running for the
NDP in the Federal Election. There is
a feeling on the doorsteps that people
want change.
I strongly believe in the NDP and believe that Tom Mulcair will be a great
Prime Minister and move the country
forward in a way that works for everybody, not just a few. He will bring our
Canada back to the country that was

Council nips grader problem in bud

As summer draws to a
close, the Town of Strathmore council decided to
spend thousands of dollars,
not originally earmarked in
the 2015 budget, on major
repairs to the transmission
of their grader.
Even though the transmission of the 2003 mid-size
grader is still in operation,
a routine servicing deemed
the machine in need of either repair or replacement of
its transmission.
While the transmission
has not yet failed, it could

happens its at the worst
opportune time. Its recommended to council that
council authorize the use of
funds from financial stabilization to complete the repair
on this grader.
Tiede added that operations during the winter
would be difficult in removing all snow in a timely manner, if the situation was to be
ignored.

forking over $49,400 to repair the transmission, replace the grader with a new-

Riders from the Siksika Nation and Wheatland County
will join together to remember those with cancer, while
raising funds for the Alberta
Cancer Foundation, during
the first annual Crowfoot
Crossing Cancer Ride.
The ride is a spin-off of the
successful Innisfail Trail Ride
Against Cancer, which has
been running for 27 years
and sees about 300 riders a
year.
I have had a lot of family
members affected by cancer
and it is one reason I participate in the rides, said
Rhonda Leger, one of the cocoordinators of the event, a
10-year cancer-free survivor
herself. You dont have to be
an aggressive rider to participate. The trail is on flat land.
It is to honour those who
are struggling with cancer
or who have passed away.
People can get pledges if
they like, but they are not required to participate.
She decided to bring this
ride to Southern Alberta. The
event will help to raise money for the Alberta Cancer
Foundation for their many
ventures.
On Sunday, Sept. 20, at 10
a.m., horses, wagons and

carts will start at the site of
the original signing of Treaty
Seven at Blackfoot Crossing.
Leger said she currently has
20 riders and three wagons
signed up. It will go rain or
shine, so come prepared.
The event is family oriented
and non-alcoholic.
The ride will go along the
Bow River on Crown land,
where riders can enjoy the
scenery.
The Siksika princess will
make an appearance in full
aboriginal dress and the
night will end with traditional food of fry bread on
a stick and burgers, berry
soup and mint tea.
The ride is open to anyone;
those wanting to partake can
call Leger at 403-499-9733 to
register. Owners can register their horses for $20 and
wagon rides are $30.
Those wanting to participate or go on the wagons
are urged to pre-register, so
the organizers know how
many people are coming.
Leger also invites those who
want to perhaps watch to
come down and enjoy while
reminding those that donate
over $20 will receive a receipt for tax purposes. Volunteers are needed, if you

you start repairing and something
happens, and something else happens,
and it goes on and on, said Councillor
Steve Grajczyk.
According to administration, repairs
would allow for the machinery to be
used for another six to seven years.
In chorus with the advice of the
towns Chief Administrative Officer
Dwight Stanford, who expressed his
opinion through an email to the town,
town council agreed to dip into their
pockets and authorize the funds to be
taken out of Financial Stabilization,
to complete the repairs on the midsize grader at an estimated amount of
$49,400, on Sept. 2.

appreciation
postponed

Chris Morgan, organizer for the Emergency Response Appreciation Day,
which was to be held at Kinsman Park
on Sept. 19, had to postpone the event.
The original request to hold the event
was made to Strathmore Council and
approved by council.
Morgan had the go ahead and booked
exhibits, ordered supplies and asked
volunteers to help with the event. All
told he said he put 56 hours into organizing the event. He had 25-30 exhibitors ready to appear; however, cancellation from Strathmore Fire Department
put a wrench in the works.
It is very disappointing, but circumstances were out of my control, said
Morgan.
He said he didnt want to exclude the
fire department, but was told one week
before the event that fire crews or machines couldnt be taken out of service
for the event.
He contacted Strathmores Fire Chief
and CAO Dwight Stanford, but no accommodations could be made.
The event will most likely be rescheduled in May during emergency services
week.
I think that our emergency responders can be given appreciation more than
just once a year, said Morgan.

The Take Charge Program aims to help teens
navigate pressing questions regarding sex, relationships, and dating. The program covers a
large range of topics such as short and long-term
goals, information on sexually transmitted infections, what healthy relationships look like, issues
with pornography and current laws around sexual consent and sexting.
Our hope is that through education, dialogue,
and asking the right questions, our teens will be
better able to discern between healthy and unhealthy perspectives and behaviours. Emphasizing respect, personal worth and value, and the
right to refuse, our Take Charge Program presents abstinence as a way of respecting self and
others.
Instructors visit many different groups of youth,

ranging from junior high and senior high students, university students and professors, as well
as after school youth programs and church youth
groups. The content is taught in an age sensitive
manner and gradually increases in depth for the
older students. We are excited that we are in the
beginning stages of introducing a Grade 6 curriculum where it will include the necessary information in an age appropriate manner. Because of
the sensitive nature of this information, we strive
to teach it in a honourable and respectful way to
students of all ages and backgrounds.
At anytime, parents and teachers can contact
the Centre for more details on this program or to
set up a time for us to speak with your students.

Its time to stop the blame game and

solve Albertas fiscal crisis

The NDP government released its First Quarter
Fiscal Update on Aug. 31. That update is telling
of the state of Albertas finances, and the picture
isnt pretty.
The provincial government is now on track to
record a massive $9.1 billion deficit, the largest
by far in Albertas history. Unless there is a drastic
change in course, the deficit this year will surpass
previous record deficits set by Alison Redford in
2012: $3.9 billion, Ed Stelmach in 2010: $4.9 billion, and Don Getty in 1986: 4 billion.
By the end of this year, Albertas contingency
savings will be virtually depleted and future taxpayers will owe $14.5 billion of debt.
During his press conference, the finance minister laid the blame for much of the state of the
provinces finances at the door of the previous
PC government. Much of that blame is deserved:
the PCs spent recklessly and ran eight consecutive deficits in a row, even when oil prices peaked
over $100 a barrel.
But some of that blame is not deserved. The
Prentice budget (which was never passed into
law) projected running a deficit of $7.7 billion,
even after proposing massive tax hikes on families. This portion of the deficit (84 per cent) can
fairly be blamed on the previous government.
But our government has not been operating inside of a bubble, and has contributed to the financial crisis currently facing the province. Their
platform called for $1.4 billion in new spending
that must be paid for.
Despite leaving in place tax hikes on things like
gasoline imposed by the former government, the
new government also stacked on a 20 per cent
increase in business taxes and a 50 per cent increase on the top marginal tax rate on personal
income. The NDP promised during the campaign
that these measures would raise $1.5 billion in
new revenue to pay for their spending promises,

but economic reality is not so simple.
The NDP tax hikes are now only projected
to collect $0.5 billion in new revenue, just onethird what they projected in their platform. This
is because businesses and individuals faced with
higher taxes will respond to the new market conditions and often reduce their economic activity,
or move elsewhere to lower-tax jurisdictions. The
NDP is getting a hard lesson in Economics 101
right now, and hopefully they learn soon.
With $1.4 billion in new spending promises but
just $497 million in new revenue to pay for it, the
NDP have contributed $1 billion to the deficit left
them by the previous government.
As much as the previous government is to blame
for the shoddy state of the provinces finances, its
time to stop complaining about it and actually do
something about it. The election is over, and they
are the government. Its time to stop playing politics, and actually get down to the work of fixing
the problem.
In the spring session of the legislature, the NDP
rammed through an $18 billion spending bill with
just three hours of debate and providing virtually
no details into how they would spend the money.
The Wildrose Opposition demanded that the NDP
government account for its spending and commit
to at least give Albertans a proper budget in the
fall.
Instead, the government is ragging the puck
until after the federal election, refusing to give
the provinces finances any sense of direction.
Its now unlikely that Alberta will have a budget
passed until early November.
In the meantime, more than 35,000 Albertans
have lost their jobs in recent months, oil and gas
companies are pulling up stakes, taxes are going
up and our debt is spiraling out of control.
Albertas government needs to do what it was
elected to: stop playing political games, and get
down to work.

Library showcases paintings

Several years ago, Juanita Thomson
won three art classes at a silent auction, during the annual Parade of Nations event in Strathmore. The experience sparked interest and a love for
painting, specifically oil painting. Only
a few years later, her work is displayed
at the Strathmore Municipal Library, an
unprecedented event in the organizations history.
Thomson, whose family order falls
in-between her seven artistic brothers
and sisters, retired in 2012, after having worked for the City of Calgary for
36 years. She wanted to pick up a creative hobby, so Thomson jumped at the
chance to participate in the art classes
when the opportunity arose.
I thought this is something Id like.

Its relaxing, and I go upstairs and dont
come down for a while, Thomson said.
I feel like Im doing something really creative and I feel like Im doing
something that somebody else can
enjoy. I like to see how other people
paint and different techniques. Im just
kind of learning oil painting because I
didnt take that in school.
Thomsons inspirations stem from
images in magazines, flowers in her
garden, or random scenery she notices
when out and about. While she has donated her work in the past, Thomson
was interested in showing her work
and was prompted by a friend to approach the library.
This is the first time weve hosted
Juanita as an artist here at the library,
and from what Ive seen we havent
had many artists that use oil as a medium, so thats a little bit different, said
Carmen Erison, assistant director to library services.
She has a very classic feel to her art
and I think thats what makes it quite a
welcoming addition to the library this
month. Weve hosted a lot of artists
here that I can recall that have handled

first time I can recall that weve had a
oil painting artist here in the library.
Thomson grew up in Bonneyville,
Alberta with her siblings and single
mother who was widowed at age 39.
With most of the family showing some
artistic talent, Thomson joked that
drawing and painting is a family thing.
Having experimented with acrylic and
watercolour previously, she started
creating oil paintings only three years
ago.
Despite her focus on floral and landscape, Thomson has her eyes set on
more portraiture and painting Strathmores history.
Its just starting and I dont know
where Im going, or whats going to
happen, said Thomson.
Im enjoying it and Im not going
to stop.

The Strathmore Legion held a comedy night on Sept. 11, with artists Tommy Miller and Katie Westman opening
for Stephanie Foley.
Foley has been doing comedy since
2003 and has been performing across
Canada in numerous festivals, comedy
clubs and on YukYuk stages with fellow comedians.
Her headline for the performance
was Stephanie Foley Army Wife.
While small in stature, only five-foot
nothing, her stage presence was big and
hilarious. Most of her act consisted of
her unique perspective on being a wife
and mother of a two-year-old daughter. She engaged the senior crowd by
bringing back to their remembrance all
the stages of giving birth and the lovely years of early parenthood. She was
adept at engaging the hecklers among
the participants at the Legion and very
much connected with her audience.
Foley is an accomplished actress and
has been a regular on the hit CBC show
Heartland.

the same amount of time to round up cows and send them

down a shoot, but for Foat the eye surgery morphed into
a 1.5 hour stress laden session, with a years worth of lifechanging complications.
He said he never gave much thought about the procedure, even though he went home with some pain behind
the eye, similar to a pain one might feel from a hammer
whack to the thumb. Foggy vision to loss of vision, loss of
balance and pain led to examinations by specialists and in
the following days and months. His eye pressure elevated,
the broken cataract had leaked fluid into the eye and his
lens dislocated pressing on his optic nerve. He needed additional retinal surgery and when infection spread to both
eyes, doctors finally determined that he had Age Related
Macular Degeneration (AMD) disease, a vision robbing culprit. Mel was blind.
The doctor reached over and touched my hand and said
Mel, I am so, so sorry but you have lost your vision,
said Foat.
Legal blindness scales start at 2200. Foat was assessed at
2800. He said people dont realize how much they take their
sight for granted.
He still has the images of end of summer fields, horses
running, the city landscape, the birds flying over the land,
cars on the highway, mountains and the doctors masked
face in his minds eye. These were the last images he saw.
He said the hardest part of losing his sight was not being able to drive; and when his daughter gave birth to a
grandchild, he could only hold it in his arms, but realized
he would never see the face.
Scientists have found that the human cytomegalovirus is
related to the AMD and are working on drugs to counteract
the virus. Foat said that he was placed on a regime of antibiotics, prednisone and a special drug that was available from
Britain but not in Canada.
The specialists put Foat on a list for a seeing-eye dog, but
the wait was over 2.5 years. A local Lions club member suggested Foat apply through the Lions Dog Guide foundation.
Foat qualified and was given his yellow lab named Walker
after three months wait. Foat said Walker is indispensable
to getting around, and Foat spent time in Ottawa training
with Walker to become a team. Walker is more than mans
best friend, he is a member of the Foat family and when he
is not working, he is the family pet.
Foat said people ask how he can keep up such a good
attitude.
I had to make up my mind whether to take the high road
or the low road, said Foat.
He said he tries to be positive, lightening situations with a
sense of humour. He has his faith in God that things happen
for a reason, and family and friends were by his side as he
went through the dark times. He said the illness has given
him a chance to talk to others going through hard times and
led him to his role as a motivational speaker.
While learning to cope has been hard, technological aids
have helped Foat read and voice-activated software lets him
use the computer.
I am living proof that you can take the DIS off disability
and utilize your ability, said Foat.
Foat said that he is gaining some traces of light, shadow
and colour back, and accepts that whatever happens next
will be part of the journey.

Drum circle returns

to Hope Bridges

While attending an annual meeting with the Family and Community Support Services (FCSS), Lynn
Walker was intrigued by the
energizing effects a drum
circle had on participants.
Calgary-based Judy Atkinson facilitated the meeting.
Noticing that her health issues high blood pressure,
stress, and blood sugar
neutralized after a session,
Walker became a certified
drumming circle facilitator
last October. Her certification came at an opportune
time for the Hope Bridges
Society, whose previous African drumming facilitator
is currently on maternity
leave.
I felt so good afterwards,
so I went for a few of her
sessions, Walker said, regarding Judy Atkinsons session.
I had physical health
problems going on, and I
would normalize. I would
get home and check my
pulse and blood sugar, and
it was normal. It puts you at
ease and takes away your
stress and all your worry. It
just happens, and its something that people should do
as part of their regular routine.
The Hope Bridges Society, a community-based,
non-profit organization that
collaborates and creates
art with adults, featured a
drumming circle previously,
and while their former facilitator was able to provide
participants with the circle
and teach technique, the
society is excited for a new
experience by accommodating Walker.
Its very relaxing and not
about the technique, its just

about coming and experiencing the rhythms and letting go of stress, said Wanda Reinholdt, Hope Bridges
Society coordinator.
What were looking forward to with Lynn, is just a
relaxation and the release
of stress that she can bring
and its very casual.
Walker, who is slowly
building up her collection,
can accommodate up to 20
people during a session,
with Hope Bridges having
received anywhere from
10 to 20 participants in the
past. Walker said she was
looking for a way to give
back to the community. After her experience with Atkinson, as well as featuring
her during last years Womens Conference at the Royal
Canadian Legion in Strathmore, Walker, who is also
the program coordinator for
the Wheatland FCSS, knew
becoming a drumming circle facilitator was what she
was looking for. Since then,
she has offered her services
during a Lunch and Learn
and to support groups.
Its just another fun drum
session, Walker said. Each
one is unique because you
never know whos going
to come through the door.
But you leave your egos at
the door, you come in and
you accept everyone in that
room for who they are, and
you support each other and
just create that synergy and
energy that everyone can
benefit from.
Walker will also offer
drumming classes through
the Wheatland Further Education Society.
The Hope Bridges Society
offers the one-day drumming circle event on Sept.
19 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

in new location

High winds during last years
Arts and Sounds in the Park Festival prompted organizers to change
the venue for Strathmores cultural
event.
The name Arts and Sounds In the
Park has changed to the Arts and
Sound Festival, which gives the organizers more leeway to pick the
location to showcase the various
artists work and related booth displays. This year the event will be
held at the Strathmore Ag Grounds.
Last year we had a really bad
storm, freak storm come through
and wrecked all the tents, so we had
to move to the ag grounds. So it was
a wild, wild weekend. We had so
much help and support; it still went
off without a hitch. The ag society
was tremendous and we really want
to thank them for their help last year
and their continued assistance this
year, said Coordinator Wanda Reinholdt.
Because the weather was so unpredictable, and Kinsman doesnt
have very good indoor facilities, we
decided to move to the ag grounds.
Booths and visual arts will be indoors and the festival will utilize the
stage area for preforming arts.
A new feature this year is a Friday
night wine and cheese party, with
piano and violin music from Bravo
Duo, led by Megan Konschuh.
Reinholdt said they wanted to have
something special for the Friday engagement. Visual art will be on display and Fieldstone Fruit Wines will
be featured. Kims Catering will provide interesting hors-doeuvre. The
night runs from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m.
The wine and cheese function is an
adult 18+ event.
Some of the mediums for the visual artists are poly glass, oil, realism
sketching, abstract, and jewelry and
wood. Performance art will feature
guitar, a rock band, solo artists and
spoken word. If there are any other
artists or performing artists interested in participating in the event,
there is still time to register.

us call, said Reinholdt.
The Arts and Sound Festival runs
Sept. 25-26. Admission is free. All
donations to the society are appreciated.
The farmers market also has their
final day at the grounds on the same
weekend, so people can enjoy both.

Forty-six players took part in the CFR Bisons Red and White Game at the Strathmore Family Centre on Sept. 13, in
hopes of making the cut to the exhibition tournament this weekend. The game ended in a 4-4 tie and the roster was

The CFR Bisons started training camp with
102 players and trimmed down to 46 for the
red and white game, held on Sept. 13, and at
the conclusion of that they are now down to
34 players heading into the exhibition tournament this weekend.
Bison head coach Sandy Henry had
watched many talented players come through
camp and he said it made the coaching staffs
decisions that much tougher to make.
I think there was some agreement certainly that it was probably one of the better ones
weve ever had as far as the skill level, said
Henry. I think how close guys are together
and how hard it was to separate them. We
spent a lot time on guys, just trying to sort
them out just because there were things that
we liked about every guy there, but unfortunately eventually you got to get it down to a
workable number.
Henry viewed the red and white game from
the media booth and said the pace looked
fine, but coaches that were at ice level thought
the game was fast-paced. He appreciated the
comments that were made in the interview
process after the game.
The feedback I got back from a lot of the
players when we were interviewing them that
the pace had gone up a lot even from main
camp, said Henry. Thats encouraging for us.
Thats what we had hoped it would do and it
helped us sort guys out a little bit when that
pace went up.
It left some guys behind and not that
theyre bad players, its just that they werent
used to that pace and werent quite capable
of making their expectation.
He hopes the decisions that were made will
not come back and haunt the team, but sees
a lot of potential with the players that were
selected to move on into exhibition games
with the club.
We are really excited with the group we

got, he said. We got size, we skate really
well, and team speed looks real good. Honestly, we havent really added our vets in yet.
Im really enthused to see what this week
looks like and actually get to play some different teams for a change.
The coaching staff now will seize the opportunity to move into the dressing room and
communicate with the players on a consistent
basis to get to know one another better.
This will allow the staff to see what players
are best suited to play with each other.
I think last year, the character of our team
was huge, how they managed and what kind
of personalities we have, said Henry.
A factor that made main camp more interesting was the strong core of players born in
2000 that seem to have caught the eyes of the
brass, who have chosen to take five of them.
Henry said they have pushed the older guys
on the team.
First of all we had a lot of them try-out
in rookie camp, said Henry. A lot of them
got through to main camp. Its an extremely
skilled group in the entire draw zone. In the
Bison draw zone there is a huge peak and
theres lots of big guys that can skate with
skill and even the mid-size guys, theyve been
a difficult group to sort out. In one respect
theyve made it more difficult and its hard to
keep a lot of them.
He stressed that once a lot of those players are 16, the organizations job will become
a lot harder to send guys home from that
group.
The Bisons will hold their annual invitational tournament this weekend that began
on Sept. 17 (6:30 p.m.), against the Red Deer
Chiefs (result not available as of press time).
They will then play host to the Calgary
Northstars on Sept. 18 (5:30 p.m.) and the
Calgary Buffaloes on Sept. 19 (11:45 a.m.).
The playoff round will be played later on
the 19th and 20th.

Wheatland Kings head coach Joel Robinson could not have
written a better script coming out of main camp this past week,
as the boys went undefeated through the first three games of
exhibition season.
The team carried 30 players through camp and now is down
to 25 with the season right around the corner.
Were getting down to a little bit closer where we want to
be, said Robinson.
In regards to how the team is playing, its a different mentality. Everyones coming to the rink with a big smile on their
face. Guys are respecting the amount of ice time theyre getting, whether itd be theyre playing as a first line guy or a
fourth line guy. Everybody is accepting that role which is a lot
different than the situation we had last year.
He thinks the team has been fortunate with the players that
have navigated towards their program and have helped on the
team discipline, which has allowed players to fill the net.
I think last year we sat in the (penalty) box a lot, he said.
In Friday nights game, before we dropped the puck, I went
into the room and told the boys that was our mentality last
year but this year lets fill the net, and get a reputation when
were up on a team and just keep putting our foot on the gas.
Id much rather have a team that takes abuse from the league
because we just run teams out of the rink, as in the scoreboard, than known as that team thats just a goon squad.
There were players that showed up to camp that the club did
not anticipate being here, but the players came in and played
their way onto the roster and have given the coaches tough
decisions.
My job is just as hard as the guys making our team, he
said. I make some hard decisions. When it comes down to it,
I had some kids that came to camp this year that we werent
expecting to be on our roster, which completely changed that
ideology with the way they played, or their dedication to the
rink or whatever it might be.
Robinson did not hesitate to say that the decisions will only
get tougher as they will be actively pursuing midget AAA
and junior cuts while there are still two to three players that
werent in camp that could come in and fill a role.
The roster will have to be down to 23 in the next week.

The Strathmore Community Football
Association peewee Badgers settled in
comfortably on the big turf at McMahon Stadium, as they cruised to a 44-13
opening season game victory against
Drumheller on Sept. 12.
Head coach Clinton Bean admired
his young squads abilities with the
ball once the plays were handed to the
kids.
We just put it in the kids hands and
they came through, said Bean. They
were a little bit nervous playing at McMahon Stadium, which is a little bit intimidating. Once they got stuff going
they were good, they started moving
the ball a little bit and everything came
easier for them.
He was thrilled with the teams effort
because they were able to remember
what they had learned in practice and
carried it over to the game, but says
a lot of the playbook still needs to be
established.
It was mostly running today, said
Bean. Were pretty limited in our playbook right now. We probably only ran
about six running plays. At the end of
the game when we had a big lead, we
passed the ball a few times. It was actually a lot better than I thought it was
going to be.
The peewee Badgers will continue
the road trip this weekend and look to
Early Bird Air Ltd.

a perfect 2-0 to start the season, as they
won a tight defensive game 23-9 in
Rocky Mountain House last Saturday.
Coach Sean Seafoot thought they carried the play from week one, all the
way the through this game.
We knew we were going into an
away game against a team that led
the South last year, said Seafoot. We
knew it was going to be a tough opponent and their last game they won
45-0 as well. We knew it was going to
be a big fight and we ended up coming
out on top.
He could not say enough about his
defensive line keeping the team in the
game right until the end.
It was a big defensive battle, he
said. It was only 9-9 until five minutes
left in the fourth quarter. We had a few
injuries, guys going in different spots,
guys stepping up and just put the nail
in the coffin.
The bantams will have a bye week
before taking on Springbank on Sept.
26 (1 p.m.) at Crowther Memorial Junior High School.
The senior team had a rough go of it,
in their final tune up game before the
regular season starts, as they lost to Innisfail 64-12 at home on Sept. 12.
They will open up their season Sept.
19 in Didsbury.

For the Strathmore High School Cross
Country Program, there is a lot of potential from both the returning runners
and a core group of Grade 10s who are
coming out of an excellent program at
the junior high level.
Head coach Paul Sonsteby sees a lot
of potential with his group and the athleticism to push one another on the
track.
Im really excited about our cross
country team, said Sonsteby. We lost
some strong runners from last year
and some of the best runners Ive ever
coached. This crop of Grade 10s is absolutely phenomenal. Our first run, we
were so impressed with the athleticism,
coaching and early dedication of our
Grade 10s.
He said that the team has been raking in the benefits of those feeder
systems from the junior high and elementary running programs, who have
developed strong runners, and that is

the reason they have seen success the
last couple of years.
Were building runners, Sonsteby
said. I say it every year, were getting
stronger runners and our 10s. We normally have this carry over, where a lot
of times I see a lot of great runners in
grade 11, who didnt come to me the
year before and I didnt know about
in time. This year especially, when you
have three solid grades of runners like
that, it really makes for an exciting season.
Maria Fanning, who is a returnee,
thinks this will be a well-rounded team
that will push each other on the track.
We lost some Grade 12s that were
really strong runners and I feel like
the grade 10s coming up have a lot of
promise, said Fanning. Theyll challenge us because we dont want the
younger ones to beat us.
On a personal level she hopes to
push herself and make a third consecutive trip to provincials.

Yoga helps athletes heal

Pranava Yoga Studio is continuing to establish
new programs for youth in the community to help
train them to live a healthier lifestyle.
The studio will introduce a new program called
Yoga for Young Athletes which will enable instructor Kelly Montford to aid athletes in Grades
6-12 to heal injuries and to stretch properly to
prevent them.
Injury prevention is the big one, said Montford. We push our kids so hard. I have so many
parents say my kid plays year round sports, there
is no rest. We have to somewhere find somewhere
we can give them that rest and take it down a
notch. We teach them not only the movement but
the breathing.
She mentioned that a lot of the athletes have
anxiety and do not know what do to with it,
where if they attend the sessions the players will
gain knowledge on how to deal with their issues.
If you give them that option, they can do a
lot of self-help techniques, said Montford. Most
yoga classes end with Shavasana. Sometimes instead of ending with it Ill start with that, and you
just give them five to 10 minutes right at the beginning of the class and just talk to them. Put them
in a situation like find a comfortable room, place,

a picture that you seen in a magazine, somewhere
that settles you.
Montford did add this will not happen in the
first class, but emphasized that the athletes need
to know that they are in a safe place and the issues can be dealt through relaxation.
Pranava Teens will be returning this year, and
program that the staff are excited about because
of the success in the past.
This is a girls only class, said Becky Stone,
co-owner of Pranava Yoga Studio. This is a bit of
a different focus than from young athletes, which
has a real focus on alignment and biomechanical specifics. The Pranava Teen girls class is more
focused on building self esteem, body awareness
and body acceptance, creating a sense of community for the girls.
The class is for girls in Grades 7-12. Any girls
that are interested in trying the program, can
come out and do the first class for free.
The Yoga for Young Athletes begins in a couple
of weeks and will run on Tuesdays from 4-5 p.m.,
while the Pranava Teens will run every Thursday
from 4-5 pm.
Fees will be $15 for drop-in and $170 for the 12week series. Registration is still open and you can
contact Pranava Yoga Studio at (587) 365-3651.

The Strathmore High School
senior volleyball teams are
heading in different directions
in terms of experience and seeing results on the court this season.
For the boys, based on practices and the returning players,
they are destined to go all the
way, and for the girls it will be
a new experience for many of
them but it will be about making the program stronger.
We have a lot of really good
athletes, said boys head coach
Cole Hintz. They grew, theyre a
year bigger, theyre a year better
and everyone came back excited
to play. You could definitely see
that in the first week, everyone
was excited to get back at it and
hopefully accomplish some big
things this year.
This years roster is comprised
of many players who had played
club volleyball, while there are
others who are great athletes
that are new to the game and require some practice.
Hintz thinks once the team
gels this will only help the team
becomes a stronger unit on the
court.
Its good to have a mix of
those two, he said. Because
you have that excitement of doing something for the first time.
Then you have the guys who
have been there before and kind
of know what to expect. Everyone can help each other.

Having won zones a season
ago has Hintz thinking that the
players will only be driven more
at tournaments and will need
to be more aggressive to score
some points.
The older guys learned that
they need to be aggressive to
score points, said Hintz. Just
establishing that and fine tuning
our systems surrounding that
throughout the year is what we
need to do. Our practices should
be a real good indicator of the
level we can reach in games.
Middle Caleb Funk would like
nothing more than to go on a
long run in hopes of winning
zone and provincial banners.
I think we got a pretty good
chance, said Funk. We got a
pretty strong team this year, lots
of returning players. I think it
would be really fun if we can
make it to provincials.
He wants to improve his hitting during the games in preparation for next club season.
Randy Moncks senior girls
squad have many new players
that are new to the team and he
expects it to be a rebuilding process for a couple of years.
Last year we had three Grade
10s and two of them were superior athletes, said Moncks. I
think were younger this year,
probably not as physical as we
were last year. Its going to be a
growing process. Unfortunately
we cut some Grade 12s and it

always hurts them a little bit.
Weve got to build, we got to
give our 11s touches and give
them some playing time.
Moncks added where the
strength may lie is in the group
of Grade 11s, who have strong
athletic abilities and will determine some of the teams success
thus year.
I think our problem has been
weve had two or three Grade
12s, they go on and were not
super strong at the upper levels,
he said. Weve got a group here
for the first time ever, Grade 11s
that are big solid athletes and
theres a lot of them. Were trying to keep that core together
and hopefully itll give us some
results.
He hopes that this will create
a challenge where the 11s will
battle the 12s for court time.
First year player Jayda Stewart knows it will be a learning
process playing with the senior
level but is excited for the competitive aspect.
On the senior team its more
competitive, said Stewart. And
just stepping the A game a little more and try your best. I
like just being with a bunch of
friends and its nice to be out
there playing the sport as well.

Carrie Westgard was impressed
with what she saw come out of
her team at the season-opening
Black Diamond tournament last
weekend and thinks there is

a lot of upside to this group.
Our team I think has really good potential, said Westgard. Once we teach them
our systems, theyre going to
be successful and showcase
what they can do. There is
still a lot of technical skill
work we can do with them.
They have a lot of room to
grow and Im looking forward to working with them
in that sense.
Westgard believes that
theyll succeed if they play
with that eagerness and no
quit attitude the girls displayed in the tournament
over the weekend.
Theyre fighters, theyll
work hard, said Westgard.
Theyre go-getters, they
dont like to lose. Even
though the focus of the
tournament this past weekend was not to focus on the
score. For them they were
okay with not worrying

about score but they wanted to play with everybody.
Theyre focus and intensity
is really good to see.
From here on in going into
these next couple of tournaments, there will be more
of emphasis on systems and
showing that play on the
court.
Well be focusing more on
our systems and making it
second nature, she said.
Meanwhile, a Junior Varsity team has been formed
and coach Hintz is looking
forward to developing the
program.
Our younger guys, we
want to grow and develop,
said Hintz, who is coaching
both the senior and junior
Spartans. And get used to
being aggressive to winning
points. Theyre going to have
a lot of different experiences
to get to that level.

It is with great sadness that the family announces
the sudden passing of our mother and grandmother, Yvonne Marie Anderson, on September 7, 2015
at her home in Calgary, Alberta. She will be truly
missed and lovingly remembered by her children,
Lisa (Ben) Sader, Jeff Anderson, and Dan Anderson, as well as her grandchildren Laura and Kiri
Sader. Yvonne loved gardening, cooking, baking,
spending time with her kids and grandkids, and
took any opportunity to gather us all together for
a homemade turkey dinner complete with a dozen
(or more) side dishes and three kinds of pie. She
was a devoted mother and grandmother who always put our needs before her own. We are so
grateful to have made so many happy memories
on our recent family vacation that we can cherish
forever. She impressed us all with her determination to keep up with us on long hikes, scuba
diving, and sampling the assortment of tequilas.
Mom, Grandma Pickle, we will miss you forever
and remember you often. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to the Hospice Calgary
Society (1245-70 Ave. S.E., Calgary, T2H 2X8). At

Lorna Jean
Lorna passed away peacefully

on Sunday, September 13, 2015 at Strathmore,
Alberta at the age of 84 years. She is survived
by her children, Bryce Mitchell and Carol (Rick)
Appleton; grandchildren Matthew and Colin
Mitchell of Calgary, and Joanne (Riley) Kendrick,
Elizabeth, and Max Appleton of Strathmore. Lorna
was born November 19, 1930 in Vulcan, Alberta
to parents Charles Russell Robson and Violet Lyle
Robson. She had a wonderful childhood in Vulcan,
after which she moved to Calgary and completed
school and Henderson Business College. Returning to Vulcan, she married Donald Mitchell and
went on to own/operate several businesses and
farming operations with him. In Lornas later years
she lived in Strathmore where she was able to be
close to her dear family and friends. She was a
kind and gentle soul who will be greatly missed by
all who knew her. Lorna was predeceased by her
husband, Donald Mitchell, in 2005 and her sister,
Leta McNaughton, in 2007. If desired, memorial
tributes may be made directly to the Alberta Heart
and Stroke Foundation (#200, 119-14th St. N.W.,
Calgary, T2N 1Z6) or to a charity of your choice.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 19, 2015 at Strathmore United Church at

Nick passed away after a very

brief illness at the Red Deer Regional Hospital surrounded by his children, grandchildren, and their
loved ones. He was predeceased by his loving
wife, Kathy, who always held a special place in
his heart. He will be dearly missed by his children,
Pat (Terry), Linda, Larry (Twyla), and Mervin (Kerri);
eight grandchildren, Stacy (Kyle), Brandi, Brittany,
Rory, Aidan, Ross, Michelle, and Cody; and four
great-grandchildren, Tyler, Clayton, Bronson, and
Ryker. He is also survived by his wife, Alice, of Red
Deer; his brothers Leo (Celine), Eugene (Ellen), and
Jerome; and sisters Eleanor Helfrich and Josie
(Maynard) Krenbrink. Nick was a role model to his
children and an inspiration to his grandchildren. He
was a successful businessman and entrepreneur
who greatly believed in the support, involvement
and growth of the small community of Rockyford
where he, along with his brothers, built a business,
raised a family, and made 57 years of wonderful
memories. He fondly remembered his years in
the Standard Snowmobile Club, Rockyford Lions
Club, and the Knights of Columbus, as well as the
many years he enjoyed as an active member of the
Canadian Feed Industry. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made directly to the Alberta Cancer
Foundation (1331-29 St. N.W., Calgary, T2N 4N2)
or S.T.A.R.S. Air Ambulance (Box 570, 1441 Aviation Park N.E., Calgary, T2E 8M7). A Funeral Mass

Mortgages versus credit cards are you at your limit?
Most people who own a home have a credit card. You need it for all kinds of major purchases: a new TV, building a
new deck, maybe even new appliances or better yet, a much needed, well-deserved, yes you earned it, kind of vacation.
Everyone knows that the best thing you can do is pay off the credit card every month. So a few months have gone by and
that credit card balance is still there. Now wait a minute, something else happened to you and your life and that credit
card balance is still there. Time has slipped by and you have been carrying a $15,000 balance on your credit card at 21
per cent interest for months now. No big deal, I will just keep making the minimum payments.
Yes you must make the minimum payments - but it will not get paid off this way. Its not entirely your fault. You make
the some money, have the same expenses, live the same lifestyle, and the lottery is just not working the way it used to.
If you own your own home, consider refinancing. If you are able to to pay off all these credit lines and debts owing how
would that make you feel. If you have a mortgage of $300,000 and you are able to add $15,000 to it and pay it all off at
3 per cent, the savings can be huge and the impact to your life can be substantial in two key ways. First your going to save
money in what you pay in interest. The second and most commonly overlooked piece to this is that
you will reduce your overall payments as well. So not only will you be saving money you will free
up more cash which you can use in any number of ways including paying off your mortgage faster.
Do yourself a favour, review your credit card statements. Go back as far as you have to to the first
month when you started carrying a balance over zero. If that was more than three months ago or
your credit card is at its limit, give me a call youll be glad you did.
