Democratic teachers
Democratic teachers are neither permissive nor autocratic
.Democratic teachers
provide firm guidance and leadership by establishing rules and consequences.
For democratic teachers, freedom comes from discipline.
To the extent that students understand that consequences follow behaviour, they
are then free to choose behaviour that will attain their legitimate needs.
Democratic Classrooms
Democratic classrooms are where the
curriculum actively engages students in collaborative inquiry
Example:
decision making is shared between students and staff
students choose their daily activities
Democratic classrooms help students become active citizens and preparing them
for participation in a democratic society.
In democratic classroom;
Students and teachers work together to
make students learning a contribution to their community
Students demonstrate their learning in public settings and receive public
feedback
Students have choice, both as individuals and as groups, within the parameters
provided by the teacher
Gives opportunity for the students to participatein the teaching and learning
process.
The power is not restricted for teacher only(authoritative).
Mutual respect motivates students tobehave constructively.
This occurs out of their heightened sense of social interest
Praise supports completion.
Encouragement supports the process.
Logical consequences producebetter results than punishment.
Promotes respect andcommunication among teacher and students.
Allows students to take responsibilitiesfor their own actions to help
establishclass rules.
Compliments good teaching byproviding a caring classroomcommunity using
student centeredtechniques.
Weaknesses
Might be difficult for teachers to identifyand understand students reasons for
misbehaving.
Teachers may not be able to respondproperly and to provide logicalconsequences
for all misbehaviour.
Some deep emotional problems thatlead to serious feeling of inadequacy or to
elaborate plan for revenge mightrequire professional counseling skills.
Teachers who are inherently autocraticor permissive might have
difficultyadopting democratic perspectives.
