TheBiomedicalEngineeringStudent
AsaseniorbiomedicalengineeringstudentatRPI,Iamreceivingaparticularlywellrounded
educationinengineering,complementedbystudiesinthesciencesandhumanities.Duringmy
sophomoreyear,Ibecameinterestedindentistryandbegantoselectcoursesthatwouldprepareme
fordentalschool.Whilethismeantadditionalwork,Iimprovedmystudyskills,andIhaveearneda
gradepointaverageof3.4overthelastthreeyears.Becauseofthisrigorouscourseload,Iwillbe
graduatingthisAugustinsteadoflastMay.Ihadplannedonapplyingtodentalschoolthisfallforthe
198889enteringclass,butafterreceivingyourletterearlierthismonthandsubsequentlyspeaking
withtheadmissionsoffice,IfoundthatitwasstillpossibletoapplyfortheSeptember1987entering
class.
MyinterestinthehealthcarefieldbeganwhileIwasinhighschool.Iwasfirstintroducedtomany
differentaspectsofthemedicalfieldasamemberoftheMedicalExplorers.Myfurtherresearch
experienceincollegehasinspiredmetoenterthedentalprofession.
Mybackgroundinbiomedicalengineeringhasintroducedmetosomeofthepracticalapplicationsof
biomaterialsindentistry.Dentistryisachallengingfieldthatwouldenablemetoprovidehealthcare
tomanypeople.Oralhealthisacrucialpartofwellbeing,andIbelievethatIcanmakeasignificant
contributiontodentalmedicine.ThoughIanticipatethatmuchofmytimeasaprofessionalwillbe
spentprovidingclinicalcare,Iamdeterminedtocontinuewithresearchingnewtechniquesfor
improvedtreatment.
Mycareergoalistospecializeintheareaoforalsurgery.IamencouragedinthisaspirationwhenI
considertheachievementsofthe1986SDOSgraduatingclass,whereboththenumberandpercentage
ofstudentsadmittedtopostgraduateresidencyprogramswerehigherthanthoseforanyotherdental
schoolinthecountry.AnotherthingthatappealstomeaboutSDOSisthefavorableratioofstaffto
students,whichundoubtedlyenhancesbothindividualinstructionandthedevelopmentofclose
relationshipsbetweenstudentsandinstructors.
Thissummer,atRPI,IwillbeassistingDr.JoanSmith,DDS,andDr.RobertAdams,PhD,in
determiningtheeffectofmagnesiumonthecrystaldevelopmentofdentalenamelinnewbornrats.
Therationaleforthisresearchisthatmagnesiumiscloselyassociatedwithacidsolubilityand,thus,
potentiallywiththetoothdecayprocess.Asaresultofthisresearch,Iamalreadycoauthorofa
posterpresentationentitled"TheDetectionofMagnesiumAccordingtoDevelopmentalAge,"which
wasshownattheMarch1987meetingoftheInternationalAssociationofDentalResearch.Bythe
endofthesummer,Ishouldbecoauthorofatleasttwojournalpublications.
IwouldbepleasedtojointhedistinguishedclassenrollingatSDOSinSeptember1987.Overall,I
feelthatSDOScanhelpmeachievemygoalsbypreparingmetofulfillmyobligationtomyself,to
society,andtothedentalprofession.
