Whats the biggest obstacle to your ability to invest successfully? Is it the ups and
downs of the financial markets? Political events? The fact that you werent born rich?
Actually, the chief hurdle you face is something over which you have control: your own
emotions.
Your emotions can lead to a variety of ill-advised investment behaviors, such as
these:
Cutting losses Declines in the financial markets can lead some investors to try to
"cut their losses" by selling investments whose price has declined. Yet, when prices
have dropped, it may actually be a good time to buy investments, not sell them, especially when the investments are still fundamentally sound.
Chasing performance In the investment world, the flip side of "fear" is "greed." Just
as some investors are propelled by fear of loss, others are motivated by quick, big
gains. They may pursue "hot" investments, only to be disappointed when the sizzle
quickly fizzles. Instead of trying to "score" that one big winner, you may be better off
spreading your investment dollars among a range of vehicles stocks, bonds, government securities, certificates of deposit (CDs) and so on. While diversification cant
guarantee a profit or protect against loss, it may help reduce the impact of market
volatility on your portfolio.
Focusing on the short term When the market is down, you might get somewhat
upset when you view your monthly investment statements. But any individual statement is just a snapshot in time; if you were to chart your investment results over a
period of 10, 15 or 20 years, youd see the true picture of how your portfolio is doing
and, in all likelihood, that picture would look better than a statement or two you
received during a down market. In any case, dont overreact to short-term downturns
by making hasty "buy" or "sell" decisions. Instead, stick with a long-term strategy thats
appropriate for your goals, risk tolerance and time horizon.
Heading to the investment "sidelines" Some people get so frustrated over market
volatility that they throw up their hands and head to the investment "sidelines" until
"things calm down." And its certainly true that, when owning stocks, there are no
guarantees; you do risk losing some, or all, of your investment. But if you jump in and
out of the market to "escape" volatility, you may take on an even bigger risk the risk
of losing some of the growth youll need to reach your goals. Consider this: If you had
invested $10,000 in a package of stocks mimicking the S&P 500 in December 1979,
your investment would have grown to more than $426,000 by December 2013. But if
you had missed just the 10 best days of the market during that time, your $10,000
would only have grown to less than $206,000 a difference of about $220,000, according to Ned Davis Research, a leading investment research organization. The bottom
line? Staying invested over the long term can pay off. (Keep in mind, though, that the
S&P 500 is an unmanaged index and isnt meant to depict an actual investment. Also,
as youve no doubt heard, past performance is not a guarantee of future results.)
Our emotions are useful in guiding us through many aspects of our lives, but when
you invest, youre better off using your head and not your heart.

Trysting Place Pub celebrates 30 years in business

BY NIKKI ACKERMAN
STAFF WRITER

A lot has changed since Sal Zizzo bought Trysting Place Pub
in Menomonee Falls three decades ago, but the most important thingsoffering great food and drinks at affordable
prices and giving the community a beloved hang-outhave
remained the same.
Simply put by Zizzo: I would describe us as a very large
sports bar with very good food. We welcome people from age
1 to 100, from every walk of life. You see everybody here. Its
just amazing.
As he celebrates his 30-year business anniversary, Zizzo
looks back on an exciting journey that started when he
earned an associates degree in marketing and business
administration from Waukesha County Technical College. His
sights on being a business owner himself, Zizzo purchased the
pub and grill from the Trysting Places previous owners in
1985. While working at Roundys Foods, Zizzo had also been
bartending one night per week at Trysting Place, then located at the Village Mall shopping center. One night he pulled up
to the financially struggling pub and said to himself, Gee,
maybe I could do this.
And he did. Business had not been booming when Zizzo
took over so he made it his mission to breathe new life into
the operation.
I came up with a lot of specials25-cent tap beers on
Mondays, 50-cent shots on Tuesdays, $1 bottled beer on
Wednesdays, 25-cent tacos on Thursdaysand I was just
there a lot, he said. I greeted everyone, got to know people
one customer at a time. The business was doing extremely well
by the time we moved to our current location.
Zizzo remained at the original site for four years until purchasing DeQuardos Pizza and moving to where he is now at

Dear Dr. Winter, I have a bad mouth! I have

loose teeth, root tips, bleeding gums and bad
mouth odor. I really want to have a smile I can be
proud of for once in my life.
I am on a fixed income so I do not have all the
money for a glamorous makeover but I am
hopeful you can help me. I saw your website and
realize you have helped thousands of patients
with problems similar to mine. Please let me
know how you can help me. Ann
Dear Ann, when people are in pain or ashamed
of their mouth the first step is always the hardest!
Since we see people with severe dental issues you
can be assured that you will never be judged. The
concepts that Dr. Winter lectures on include
"Upgradeable Dentistry" which allows people to
pick a plan that will sequentially help people
improve their smiles at a pace they can afford.
If you must have dentures we may offer deluxe
dentures with soft liners to give you the ultimate
in comfort. Or we may offer small diameter
implants to help hold your dentures firmly in
place without the need for messy adhesives.
From there we discuss whether we can perform
grafting to improve the amount of bone you have
so that implants can be done within 8-12 months
while avoiding more expensive grafting
procedures. Perhaps we can discuss a path where
2-4 implants are placed each year and you would
go from a removable implant retained denture to
a "fixed bridge". That option would allow you to
have your teeth in your mouth 24/7 without the
embarrassment of removing them at night.
So having the flexibility to discuss dynamic
treatments is what we offer at Hampton Dental
Associates.

Richfield district to host community conversation

The RIchfield School District will be
hosting a "Community Conversation for
Educational Excellence" at Richfield
Elementary School from 6:30-8 p.m.
Sept. 24.
"The purpose of this event is to

According to information from the

district, the goals of the meeting
include providing an opportunity for

HOME IMPROVEMENT

5 simple ways to increase energy efficiency and savings

Fall and winter can be tough on
your home and your wallet. As temperatures drop, chances are your furnace
will be working overtime. This results in
two things - greater energy consumption and higher heating bills.
Try these easy DIY projects to help
cut down on energy loss and expenses:
1. Replace worn weather-stripping
around doors and windows. Worn
weather-stripping can create drafts and
let heated air out, stressing your furnace and compromising your comfort.

Replacing it takes little time and is a

low-cost, high-impact solution.
2. Top up or replace old insulation in
your attic. A poorly insulated attic is a
primary source of energy loss. Also,
over time, some types of insulation can
settle and compact, allowing heat to
escape through gaps. Experts recommend topping up or replacing attic
insulation with a dimensionally stable
batt insulation like Roxul Comfortbatt.
Aim for an R-value of at least R-50 or a
depth of roughly 16 inches.

3. Insulate basement headers and

walls. Uninsulated basement headers
are common, especially in older homes.
They can act as a gateway for heated air
to escape. Fixing the problem is fast and
easy. Simply cut Comfortbatt mineral
wool insulation to fit the cavity and
compress into place. Doing this
throughout your basement will prevent
heat loss and can potentially save hundreds of dollars each year.
4. Caulk around windows. Cracks and
crevices are a source of heat loss. They

can also be an entry point for

water/moisture, as well as for unwelcome insects. Preventative maintenance, such as caulking, can improve
energy efficiency and prevent costly
repairs.
5. Change your furnace filter. Make
it a point to check your furnace filter
monthly, always changing it when it's
dirty. This will improve the performance
and efficiency of your furnace, saving
you money.

HOME IMPROVEMENT

Four easy tips for

basement makeover
BY SCOTT MCGILLIVRAY

The start of a new season is the perfect time to check some tasks off of
your "to-do" list - whether it's to get in
shape or tackle at-home projects. If
you're planning on making some simple
but effective changes at home, here are
some tips on how to give your basement a total 180-degree makeover.
Soundproof it
Installing acoustic insulation is the
perfect excuse to crank up the subwoofer, host a get-together or let the
kids run wild. Soundproofing is the
ultimate solution to maximize your
basement's peace, quiet and privacy.
Industry experts suggest using Roxul
Safe n' Sound, which effectively
absorbs sound and is easy to work with.
Out with the old, in with a floor
Installing a new floor or updating
the existing one can improve the overall comfort level and look of your basement. Many unfinished basements have
basic concrete flooring, which is cold
year-round. Flooring options are endless - hardwood, laminate, cork and
Berber flooring all add warmth to a
basement bedroom or TV room; play
mats are great for kids' playrooms; and
carpets are perfect to make any room
feel more comfy and welcoming.
Get creative with paint
Transform the dull and boring space
into an inviting entertainment oasis or
a colorful playroom with a simple coat
of paint. When considering the paint,

GARAGE DOORS
& OPENERS
Sales & Service

think about what color will compliment

your existing furniture. To add some
drama, consider adding depth and visual interest to your space with a different colored accent wall.
Accessorize it
Throw pillows, rugs, lighting, and
artwork are simple additions that can
immediately enhance or change your
basement's look and feel. Pot lights can
modernize, while art work and throw
pillows can add a splash of color. Decide
on a theme and color scheme for your
room and keep your eye out for staple
pieces that will make it feel like an
entirely new space.

HOME IMPROVEMENT

How to stay within your home improvement budget

Home improvement projects range
from small scale undertakings that can
be tackled in a single weekend to large
remodels that can take several months
to complete. While no two projects are
the same, every home improvement
project demands that homeowners dip
into their pockets and spend some
money.
Much like the scale of projects varies
greatly, so, too, do the financial com-

mitments required of homeowners to

make those projects a reality. But no
matter the size of the project, homeowners can find ways to stretch their
budgets without sacrificing the quality
of their improvements.
Do your homework. Before you
decide to make changes to your home,
it's best to first do some research into
any potential projects you're considering. Many homeowners have decided to

dive into a project before they fully

realize its scope and cost, and going in
blind can bust a budget, turning what
might have seemed like a relatively simple project into a money pit.
Understanding just what a project
entails and how much it's likely to cost
can give homeowners an idea of what
they can afford and where they might
be able to stretch their budgets. For
example, if you want to replace your

kitchen countertops but can't afford

engineered quartz countertops, you
might be able to find a less expensive
alternative, such as tile, that you like
just as much. But it's best to research
such alternatives before you decide to
replace your existing countertops. If
you can't find a less expensive alternative, you might want to postpone the
project until you can grow your budget.

HOME IMPROVEMENT

Stay within your budget

From Page 18

But starting the project without first

grasping its true cost is a recipe for disaster, so do your homework before you
find your toolbox and start working.
Build unforeseen expenses into
your budget. Another way to stay within your budget is to include budgetbusting unforeseen expenses into the
budget from the get-go. Whether you're
doing the project yourself or paying a
contractor, nearly every home improvement project will present some unforeseen, and costly, hurdles. For example,
you might find mold inside the walls
when you're converting a basement,
and it can cost a pretty penny to make
that mold go away. If you go into the
project expecting such hurdles, then
the financial sting of addressing them
won't prove too great a burden. But if
the mold catches you and your budget
completely off guard, you might be

Years of
Experience!

forced to overextend that budget or

make sacrifices elsewhere in order to
complete the project. Build some contingency money, including permit and
permit fees, into your home improvement project to safeguard against such
unforeseen issues.
Get to work. If you're hiring a contractor, speak to him or her before signing a contract to see if there is anywhere you can pitch in to keep the
labor costs low. You might be able to
pitch in during the demolition phase,
saving the cost of paying your contractor's workers to tear down walls or
remove debris you can just as easily
remove yourself. Another way to pitch
in is to do the end-of-day cleanup yourself. Any role you play with regard to
labor will likely need to be negotiated
upfront, but you can save yourself a
substantial amount of money on labor if
you're willing to get your hands dirty.

Determine if piecemeal is the most

affordable option. Sometimes it makes
sense to tackle one project at a time,
while other times you might want to
combine projects to save on the cost of
materials. For instance, if your ultimate
goal is to install wood flooring throughout your home, determine if it makes
more financial sense to install the flooring all at once rather than doing one or
two rooms at a time. You might save by
buying all of your materials at once
rather than buying a small amount of
materials several times over the next
several years.

Re-opening begins new era

for Old Town Beer Hall
Much is new to the Old Town Beer
Hall, including the name.
The business in Germantown previously known as Jerry's Old Town Inn
held a grand re-opening Sept. 4. It is
located at N116 W15841 Main St.
"It looks terrific, it looks authentic,
it looks like a great place for fun,"
Germantown Village President Dean
Wolter said during the re-opening ceremony.
The re-opening included a ceremonial "first tap" of beer. Peggy Mueller
performed during that evening while
large televisions were broadcasting
both American college football and
international soccer matches.
During a recent interview, owner
Chaz Hastings said he became interested in the location after learning about
it from a food vendor. The business had
been closed for a period of time prior
to Hastings acquiring the site.
"This is a place that really doesn't
deserve to close," he said after learning
of it.
Hastings has transformed the busi-

ness from an inn into a beer hall. While

the adjacent Von Rothenburg Bier
Stube is a more intimate location, the
Old Town Beer Hall is twice the size of
Von Rothenburg. The transformation of
the Old Town site included gutting the
inside of the building, which dates
back to 1950. New furniture and murals
were installed, along with steins and
real hops. The park table seating is
also new, and there is space for bands
to perform.
The new space will allow for yearround activity inside and later into the
evening. With the changes, Hastings
said the inside is a "colorful, warm
inviting place."
A true authentic German menu is
served along with 16 different Bavarian
draft biers, giving the Old Town Beer
Hall a unique distinction as "the only
German restaurant in Germantown,"
Hastings said.
Hastings also noted that the beer
will be served in the proper glassware
for a beer hall.
