Topic: How to keep our surroundings clean

Materials Required: Picture of a neat and clean house, drawing sheets and
worksheets.
Children have the knowledge of different types of houses. To reach the topic
teacher asks certain questions:
Students: Good Morning Mam!!
Teacher: Good Morning Children. All are looking fresh and neatly dressed
up. Your classroom is clean and tidy. Do you like to study in such an
environment?
Student: Yes mam. I love coming to school everyday. Our school is so clean.
Teacher: Good. Keep your house and surroundings clean to keep yourselves
healthy and happy.
Teacher randomly asks the students how to keep their surroundings clean.
Students come out with different answers. Teacher conducts an activity to
reinforce the concept further.
ACTIVITY (Cleanliness Is Next To Godliness)
Teacher provides each student with a drawing sheet and asks them to draw
their dream home with clean surroundings. She instructs them to draw the
doors and windows with wire meshes so that mosquitoes and flies cannot
enter the house. She then tells them to draw a big garbage bin in the locality
so that the surrounding remains clean and disease free.

Teacher tells everyone to paste their drawing sheet on the class bulletin
board.

Once the children finish pasting their drawing sheets, teacher explains that
the Municipality or the Municipal Corporation in cities and Panchayat in
villages are responsible for the removal of the garbage. The garbage is
separated for recycling and for making manure by burying it under the
ground at landfill sites.

The above activity is followed by worksheet I

Topic: Garbage Removal and Recycling

Materials Required: A biodegradable dustbin, a non-biodegradable dustbin,
worksheets.
Since the children have the previous knowledge of Keeping their
Environment Clean teacher introduces the topic through an activity.
Teacher: Good Morning!!
Students: Good Morning Mam.
Teacher: I see some of you have not got your shoes polished and the tie and
belts are also missing. Same way books in some of the racks are also not
arranged properly. Dont worry, we will work together and everything will
be fine.
ACTIVITY
Teacher divides the whole class into two teams. Both the team leaders are
given a dust bin each. Group-I has Bio-Degradable dustbin and Group-II
has Non-Biodegradable dustbin. Members of both the teams have dusters
with them. They all clean their class racks, shelves, doors and windows.
They throw the paper pieces, chalk boxes etc in Non-Biodegradable
dustbin for recycling. Children throw dry flowers, fruits peels and waste
from their lunch boxes in Biodegradable dustbin for recycling. They are
thrown in pits to form compost. They wash their hands and sit in their
places.

The teacher feels happy as the class is neat and clean. She declares both the
teams as joint winners.

Teacher: How do you feel about your class now?

Student: we are feeling so happy. Our class room is looking tidy and fresh.
Teacher: excellent. Cleanliness has to be maintained at home and in your
locality also. Dont forget about the two dustbins that you have used today.
Teacher further explains the kitchen and bathroom should be clean and dry.
Broken pots, tyres and coolers with stagnant water should not be left around
houses because they collect water and become breeding places for
mosquitoes. She tells strictly that DUSTBINS should be always used in
PUBLIC PLACES.

She explains we can enjoy good health in a clean environment only. So

broken toys, old books, cardboard boxes, newspapers should be sold to local
raddiwallas for recycling.
Teacher: Children always follow three Rs of garbage disposal.
1. Reduce: the waste material
2. Reuse: the things like jars and bottles
3. Recycle: paper, cloth, glass etc.
Children repeat the three Rs for a week to have permanent impact on them.
This will be followed by Worksheet 2.
