Report No. 30186

Validating Equivalence to ISO 8502-9 on Measurement of Levels of

Water Soluble Salts using Candidate NST Center Salt Test Strip
SUMMARY
The difference between the highest and lowest test result in the data set for each plate was less
than 12 mg/m2 and the average of the test results were between 45 and 55 mg/m2 for each plate under
the ISO 8509-2 method. .The standard deviations of the recorded candidate test strip measurements for
each plate under each surface condition were less than 4.8 mg/m2 and the standard deviations of the
recorded ISO 8502-9 test results were less than 5.1 mg/ m2 for each plate. Additionally, the bias for
each plate under each surface condition was less than 4.2 mg/m2. These are acceptable values per
NACE SP0508-2008 Item No. 21134.

NACE SP0508-2008 Item No. 21134 Methods of Validating Equivalence to ISO 8509-2 on
Measurement of the Levels of Water Soluble Salts
ISO 8509-2 Bresle Method for Determination of Soluble Salts

DESCRIPTION AND PURPOSE

An equivalence test of two methods of measuring levels of soluble salts in water was performed
in accordance of NACE SP0508-2008. In the equivalence studies, the standard test method according to
ISO 8502-9 was compared to the Candidate NST Center Salt Test Strip to determine if the candidate
method provided an equivalent alternative. The measurements were made on a flat, horizontal surface
only. Refer to NACE SP0508-2008 Item No. 21134 Methods of Validating Equivalence to ISO 8509-2
on Measurement of the Levels of Water Soluble Salts and ISO 8509-2 Bresle Method for
Determination of Soluble Salts for a description of test methods, conditions, and data analysis. The
test was performed on three surface conditions: zinc shop primer-coated new steel, non-shop-primed
steel rusted to grade C in accordance with ISO 8501-1, and new plates blasted to Sa 2 in accordance
with ISO 8501-1 using aluminum oxide to achieve a surface profile between 50 and 75 micrometers.
The Bresle method protocol was performed using a Horiba B 173 conductivity meter calibrated
with a 147 S solution at the start of each day of testing. The candidate protocol was performed on the
same surfaces using a Jenway 4150 conductivity meter. The meters, candidate test strips, and test
panels were all provided and tested by Innovative Productivity personnel. The tests were performed
and IMR Metallurgical Services in Louisville, KY and witnessed by IMR chemists on the following
dates: January 15, February 3, February 10, and February 24/25, and April 8, 2010.

RESULTS
Two panels from each surface condition are listed in the data tables with five background
measurements (by ISO 8502-9), five Bresle extraction test method measurements (by ISO 8502-9), and
ten candidate NST center test strips measurements for each individual panel. This gives a total of ten
background measurements, ten Bresle extraction test method measurements, and twenty candidate
NST center test strip measurements for each surface condition.
The following tables summarize the results for each surface condition. Included are the raw
values obtained, the values after the offsets are taken into consideration, and the mg/m2 values after
conversion. The data table includes data for the background measurements, the five Bresle extraction
test method measurements, and the ten NST center test strip measurements. The average for each data
set along with the respective standard deviations and bias are included. Bresle and testing strip offsets
were determined by Innovative Productivity Inc. by testing on clean glass with deionized water. Bresle
patches from the same manufacturer were used throughout the study. Two different Bresle offsets are
included in the data set to account for the difference between square and round patches of the same
surface area.
