year).GIFT'spowergridwillbedesignedbyABBGroupofSwitzerland.Alltheelectricitycableswill
beunderground.HongKongElectricCompanyis99.998%reliablesince1998.[5]

PipedGas
NaturalGaswillbedistributedtoeveryhouseandbuildingviapipes,whichischeaperandsaferthan
cylinders.GassupplytothecitywillbemadefromtheexistinggasnetworkofGSPL,thestateowned
companyforgastransmissionpipelines.Pipednaturalgasisalreadyindistributioninthenearbycities
ofAhmedabadandGandhinagar.

AirConditioning

GIFTwillhaveacentralizedairconditioningsystemcalledDistrictcooling,whichischeapertorunand
useslesselectricity.

SolidWasteManagement
Allwastewillbeautomaticallysuckedthroughundergroundpipesatahighspeedof90km/h(56mph),
andwillbetreatedthroughplasmagasification.

Transportation
GIFTaimsatprovidingatransportationnetworkthatensuresaccessibility,easyandfastmobilityand
fewaccidentalroaddeaths.Thiswouldbeachievedby:
1.Usingamultimodalmixoftransportsystems(MRTS/LRTS/BRTS,etc.)forbothintercitytransport
(toAhmedabad,Airport,andGandhinagar)andintracitytransport.
2.Usingawalktoworkconceptaspartofurbanplanningwithanodalsplitof10:90betweenprivate
andpublictransport.

GIFTCrystalTowersWithatotal790,000squaremetres(8,500,000sqft)builtuparea,four
CrystalTowerswilloverlooktheSabarmatiRiver.
GIFTConventionCentreInspiredbythestructureofSaltcrystalsandMahatmaGandhi'sDandi
March,theconventioncentrewouldhaveanoperaandhaveaseatingcapacityof10,000.The

forexternalconnectivity(byroad)hasbeencompletedinconsultationwithRoads&Building
Department.ForotherexternalconnectivityvizBusRapidTransitSystem(BRTS)andMetroRapid
TransitSystem(MRTS),detaileddiscussionsareinprogresswithAhmedabadMunicipalCorporation

(AMC)andGujaratInfrastructureDevelopmentBoard(GIDB)respectively.Otherimportantstudies
viz.MarketAssessmentstudy,TalentAssessmentandSkillSetAnalysisstudyhavebeencompleted
GUDCisdesignatedasAreaDevelopmentAuthorityfortheGIFTProjectInprincipleapproval
receivedfromSSNNLforallotmentofdomesticwaterPartnershipMoUhasbeensignedwithCISCO
forOperationalizingGIFTICTFencingoftheprojectsiteandaccesstothesitehasbeenprovidedby
constructionofperipheralearthenroadsMajorapprovalsviz.EnvironmentalClearancefortheProject
andheightclearanceforpartofPhase1hasbeenreceivedConstructionactivitiesatsitevizleveling
anddressinghavebeeninitiatedPhase1isexpectedtocommenceinthelaterpartofthisyearand
wouldbecompletedin35years.Subsequentphaseswouldbeimplementedthereafter.
Governmenthascompletedlandacquisitionof272hectares(673acres)oflandforthisproject.
PresentlylandlevelingactivitiesaregoingonjustnexttotheSabarmatiriver.Workslikefourlaneroad,
gutterline,water,I.T.broadbandcablesandpowerinstallationswillfollowthis.
ThepermissionsthatareobtainedsofarincludeGUDAmasterplan,centralCivilAviationdepartments
clearance,environmentalclearance,andmicrozoning.Thegovernmenthastakenadecisiontoallow
highest3.65FSIinGIFTcity.ThecentralgovernmenthasgrantedSEZpermissiontoGIFTcity.
AhmedabadMunicipalCorporationhasgrantedpermissionforphase3ofBRTSaspartof
transportationfacilityinBRTS.GujaratInfrastructureDevelopmentBoardhasgrantedpermissionfor
MRTS.
Accordingtoofficialsclosetothedevelopment,theprocessofissuingRs.200croreworthoftendersis
inadvancestage.WhileRs.7,000crorebudgetisneededtocreateallfacilities,thegovernmentislikely
topumpinRs.1,000croreinnextthreeyears.
GUDAhasbeenhandedoverabout272hectares(673acres)oflandforlanddevelopment.Government
hasprepared11typesofstudyreportsincludingareportonearthquakeproofconstruction.1kmlong
and7meterdeepSantSarovarisbeingdevelopedtoprovidewatertoproposedGIFTcityandits
construction.
AspartofPhaseIdevelopment,around780,000squaremetres(8.4 106sqft)ofBUAhasalreadybeen
allottedfromthe1,200,000squaremetres(13 106sqft)ofBUA(builtuparea)availablefor
commercial,residentialandsocialuses.[7]
IntherecentallotmentinFeb2014,ChiefexecutiveofficerofNewYorkbasedWorldTradeCenters
Association(WTCA),EricDahlreceivedan"allotmentletter"[8]tobuildoneattheGIFTCityprojectat
Gandhinagar,wheretheassociationwillinvestoverRs600crorealongwithanIndianpartner
VIRIDIANGROUP.
WorldTradeCentre,GIFTCityforfinancial&alliedserviceswillbebuiltalongwiththeViridian
GroupwhichiscomingupabouteightWTCsincludingthoseinNoidaandChandigarh.Thecentrewill
connectbusinessesaround343locationsworldwide.ThecitiesofKolkata,Bangalore,Chennai,Kochi,
Mumbai,etc.havetheirownWTCs.

Construction
FirstPhase

Twocommercialtowers,eachof29floorscalledtheGIFTONEandGIFTTWOhavebeenfinished.
Tenderingforthenextbunchoftowersisgoingon.[9]Thisphasewillalsoincludebuildingupofbasic
infrastructure.

SecondPhase
Thesecondphaseincludesfurtherconstructionofbuildingsanddevelopmentofservices.

ThirdPhase
Thethirdphase'splannedperiodforconstructionandcommencementofthefullybuiltcity20162020.

businessesinGIFT.Amongtheinvestmentsbeingencouragedareinvestmentsfrombanks,private
equitycompanies,insurancecompaniesandassetmanagementcompanies.[12]
OnDec262011,theTimesofIndiareportedthatChina'stechnologygiantHuaweiislikelytoprovide
technologytoGIFT.AccordingtoEricYu,president,enterprisebusiness,HuaweiIndia,thistechnology
includesnetworkingsolutionsandsettingupofdatacentresandsurveillanceaswellasother
opportunities.[13]
OnOct2,2014,NetIndianreportedthatanewWorldTradeCenterwouldbesetupinGIFTCityasper
anagreementbetweenWorldTradeCenterIndiaServicesCouncil(WTCS)andGujaratInternational
FinanceTecCityCompanyLtd(GIFTCity).Itwouldbecompletedwithin4years.[14]
AccordingtothenewsreportfromtheTimesofIndiaonOctober18,2014.TheBangalorebased
BrigadeGroupwillinvestRs.500croreoverthenextfewyearstodevelop100,000squaremetres
(1.1 106sqft)ofbuiltupareawithfutureoptionofinvestinganotherRs.600croretodevelop160,000
squaremetres(1.7 106sqft)[15]

BSEBroker'sForumwouldinvest120croretobuildacommercialtowertosetupbackoffice
operationstolowertheircostsandenjoymodernfacilities.Theyhavebeenallocated28,000square
metres(300,000sqft)todevelopthecommercialtower.Withthelikelihoodofsettingupanexchange
