1.0 Introduction
The present technical procedure applies to surface coating of the slabs of CLARIFIER
TANK CL3901 and CLARIFIER TANK CL3951.
The aim of this document is to present each step of the pouring phase and comes as a
required piece of documentation in order to obtain approval from the MAIN CONTRACTOR to
bring the construction process to its end.
2.0 Reference documents
The present technical procedure is fully based on reglementations set by Romanian
Standards and Practice Codes as follows:
C 56-02 BOOK XII - FLOORS
NE 012/1 - 2007

NE 012/2 - 2010

SR 438/3 - 2012

3.0 Materials used

3.1. Concrete
3.1.1. Cement
All cements used comply with Romanian Standards and Practice Codes of concrete
mixings aforementioned.
Due to given circumstances such as the nature of substances the finished layer will come
into contact with and the concrete recipe, the type of cement used was CEM II BM(S-V)42.5 NLH.
As an added measure to prevent cracks a SIKA superplasticising additive (SIKAPLAST
302s) was added into the mixture.
3.1.2. Aggregates
Aggregate size was set at a maximum of 8mm due to the fact that the layers thickness is
of 50mm, and it is also reinforced.

3.1.3. Concrete mix

The concrete supplier has a production facility at approximately 8km away from the
construction site. Mixing is done within said facility, decreasing the probability of obtaining an
unevenly mixed material.
3.2 Reinforcement
The screed is reinforced with one layer of welded wire mesh with the following
dimensions:
-

4 mm diameter
100x100mm spacing

The steel grade is SPPB.

The mesh is set at an equally distributed distance in order to ensure concrete cover on
each side, using concrete rebar spacers.
4.0 Technical equipment
The tools and machinery used for this particular process are the following:

Diesel powered power trowel

5.0 Presentation of work phases

5.1. Support layer
The support layer consists of the concrete raft for the tanks.
5.1.1. Cleaning the support layer
The first step into the pouring process is cleaning said base layer thoroughly by sweeping
the high grain material off, eliminating it from the tank, followed by several passes over the slab
using an industrial blower to clear any small grain materials left. This ends the cleaning process
of the support layer, allowing us to pass onto the next phase.
5.1.2. Setting the finished layer level
This following step consists of a visual inspection of the base layer, in order to assess its
defects, flatness and horizontality. This ensures inspection on a quantitative level, rather than a
qualitative one.
More specific information regarding flatness is obtained by using a laser level. The
highest level of the slab will give the point of minimum concrete cover, while ensuring the
50mm thickness.
Using the same instruments, the aforementioned level is brought all around the base layer
using 100mm steel rods firmly set in the slab at a distance of 2m, or less, on a circular path. In
this manner, we are sure that the level of the finished layer is even throughout the entire tank,
taking into consideration the slope of the raft.
5.1.3. Reinforcement
A layer of welded wire mesh is set upon the concrete raft of the tanks. Due to the
circular shape of the slab and its fairly big diameter, it is not possible to supply one entire mesh.
Thus, panels of 6000x1200mm panels are set, with each mesh overlapped at a set distance of
200mm, or two spacings of the adjacent mesh, on either direction.
Concrete cover of 20mm is ensured on both the bottom part of the screed, and its top
part, by using concrete rebar spacers underneath the rebar.
5.1.4. Formwork
The finished layers shape is set by closing the circular space around the clarifier bridge
columns with plywood. This material is chosen due to its flexibility. The mold is secured tightly,
making sure it wont break during concrete set up time.
5.1.5. Concrete pour
Concrete pouring is done with a concrete pump. Once setting part of the concrete inside
the tank, it is manually flattened throughout the raft using a 2.5m level which comes atop the
steel rods, ensuring even distribution of the screed. This operation is repeated until the entire
base layer is fully covered.

5.1.6. Floor treatment

Depending on weather conditions, 2 4 hours are allowed for the concrete to set
properly, then it is lightly treated with power trowels. After another 2 hours, the power trowels
are once again fitted on and used to give the floor a final coat.
A layer of sealant is applied in order to close any pores or micro-cracks that may occur
during the curing process of the screed.
