Bradford Public Library October Programs

A program that will begin in October at BPL is the Mentor Reading
Club, which will take place Mondays from 6:30-7 p.m.
Elementary children who need to read, rehearse, and practice can
sit down with a teen, who will incorporate good reading strategies with
the youth to help improve their reading skills, comprehension, and
gain confidence in themselves. Your childs teacher might also be interested in giving specific goals on which to work. Please contact the
library at 937-448-2612 to sign up your child. This is mandatory in
order for pre-planning and appropriate materials.
A second program that BPL is interested in initiating is an Offsite
Book Club. Instead of meeting at the library, members would meet at
another community location or individuals home. Area patrons, age
18 to 99, who would be interested in such a program should contact
the library. The genre of books to be read will be considered, as will
the level of community interest. Call the library at 937-448-2612 toward the beginning of October. Pamphlets will be ready at that time
for everyone.
BPL currently has a wonderful book club on-site called Sisters-nSpirit. This book club has been ongoing for a number of years and new
members are always welcome.
Either way, BPL is here to provide for your personal requests!

Doubledees Celebrate
61 Years of Marriage

by Gary Godfrey

Watch Out For The Elderly

Today is September 17.
Once again, Im scratching my head, waiting on something to come to me to write about in this weeks
Valley Echoes. I guess it comes with age, I say to myself.
On September 25, Ginger and I celebrated our 50th Wedding Anniversary. On October 10, I turn 70.
My youngest child will be 47 this year.
This really doesnt bother me, because most of my close friends are older. Im talking about my golfing
partners. In fact, they call me the kid of the group.
This reminded me of a story I read about the elderly. It goes something like this...
Granny Clark, a little old lady living in Bradford, answered a knock on the door one day, to be confronted by a well-dressed young man carrying a vacuum cleaner.
Good morning, Ma'am, said the young man. If I could take a couple minutes of your time, I would
like to demonstrate the very latest in vacuum cleaners.
Go away! Granny bellowed. I'm broke and haven't any money for new fangled contraptions, and
she proceeded to close the door.
Quick as a flash, the young man wedged his foot in the door and pushed it wide open. Don't be too
hasty, he commanded. Not until you have at least seen my demonstration. And with that, he emptied
a bucket of horse manure onto her dining room carpet.
Now, if this vacuum cleaner does not remove all traces of this horse manure from your carpet,
Madam, I will personally eat the remainder.
Granny stepped back and said with a smile, Well, let me get you a spoon, young man, because DP&L
cut off my electricity this morning.
four old men
Four elderly golfing gentlemen were talking about what their grandchildren would be saying about
them 50 years from now.
I would like my grandchildren to say, 'He was successful in business, declared the first man.
Fifty years from now, said the second, I want them to say, 'He was a loyal family man.
I want my grandchildren to say, He was always good to their grandmother.
Turning to the last in the foursome, the first gent asked, So, what do you want them to say about you
in 50 years? Me? the fourth man replied, I want them all to say, 'He certainly looks good for his
age!'
Stories for this weeks column come from: guy-sports.com (with a little tweaking).

Walter and Martha Doubledee of Bradford were united

in marriage on September 25, 1954. They exchanged vows
at the Pilgrim Holiness Church in Cincinnati.
Walter is retired from Chrysler Corporation and Arens
Publications.
Martha is retired from pastoring four churches.
Walter and Martha stay happily busy as they are involved
in various activities and ministries.
Their children are planning a special family celebration
on September 26.

Investment Mistakes to Watch For...

At Different Stages of Life
As an investor, how can you avoid making mistakes? Its not always easy, because investing can be
full of potential pitfalls. But if you know what the most common mistakes are at different stages of an investors life, you may have a better chance of avoiding these costly errors.
Lets take a look at some investment mistakes youll want to avoid when youre young, when youre
in mid-career, when youre nearing retirement, and when youve just retired.
When youre young
Mistake: Investing too conservatively (or not at all) If youre just entering the working world, you
may not have a lot of money with which to invest. But dont wait until your income grows putting
away even a small amount each month can prove quite helpful. Additionally, dont make the mistake of
investing primarily in short-term vehicles that may preserve your principal but offer little in the way of
growth potential. Instead, position your portfolio for growth. Of course, stock prices will always fluctuate,
but you potentially have decades to overcome these short-term declines. Since this money is for retirement,
your focus should be on the long term and its impossible to reach long-term goals with short-term,
highly conservative investments.
When youre in mid-career
Mistake: Putting insufficient funds into your retirement accounts At this stage of your life, your
earning power may well have increased substantially. As a result, you should have more money available
to invest for the future specifically, you may now be able to max out on your IRA and still boost
your contributions to your employer-sponsored retirement plan, such as your 401(k), 403(b), or 457(b).
These retirement accounts offer tax advantages that you may not receive in ordinary savings and investment accounts. Try to put more money into these retirement accounts every time your salary goes up.
When youre nearing retirement
Mistake: Not having balance in your investment portfolio When theyre within just a few years
of retirement, some people may go to extremes, either investing too aggressively to try to make up for
lost time or too conservatively in an attempt to avoid potential declines. Both these strategies could be
risky. So as you near retirement, seek to balance your portfolio. This could mean
shifting some of your investment dollars into fixed-income vehicles to provide
for your current income needs while still owning stocks that provide the growth
potential to help keep up with inflation in your retirement years.
When youve just retired
Mistake: Failing to determine an appropriate withdrawal rate Upon
reaching retirement, you will need to carefully manage the money youve accumulated in your IRA, 401(k) and all other investment accounts. Obviously, your
chief concern is outliving your money, so youll need to determine how much you
can withdraw each year. To arrive at this figure, take into account your current
age, your projected longevity, the amount of money youve saved, and the estimated rate of return youre getting from your investments. This type of calculation
Vicki Blei
is complex, so you may want to consult with a financial professional.

Earth-friendly tips for autumn

Autumn is upon us, and with the change of seasons comes the fall to-do list that must be
completed before the arrival of winter weather. Many outdoor jobs are best completed before
temperatures drop, while others can be tackled indoors to help save energy and prepare for
increased time spent inside the home.
Outdoor cleanup
Autumn means leaves
are falling from trees
and littering landscapes.
Cleaning up leaves can
be a time-consuming
task, but its necessary to
promote the health of
lawns and other plants.
Grass that is completely
matted down with leaves
can become starved for
light and moisture, and
lawns may even rot

Bolyard
$ "&

"

'

when forced to spend winter beneath fallen leaves.

One eco-friendly timesaver is to shred leaves with a mower (a manual mower is preferable)
and leave them as topdressing for the lawn. As long as the grass blades can be seen within
the leaves, the lawn should be fine. Shredded leaves will decompose and add necessary nutrients and organic matter to the soil naturally.
Leaves also can be used in annual flower and vegetable gardens to improve the soil. Mulch
made from shredded leaves can be
placed on the soil around trees and
shrubs. This helps to reduce weed problems and protects root systems from
harsh temperature fluctuations.
Clothing donations
Its time to pack away summer clothing
and once again fill closets and drawers
with sweaters and jeans. Before packing
away your summer wardrobe, conduct
an inventory to determine if there are
any items you no longer use. Donate
these items or use them as rags when
cleaning.
Keep some short-sleeved shirts accessible so you can layer them under sweatshirts and sweaters. The heat from
layering will be trapped against your
body and keep you cozier, reducing
your reliance on HVAC systems to stay
warm.
Home repairs
Check the roof for any missing shingles. In addition, look for spots where
animals or insects may be able to gain
entry into your home. Seal these areas
and repair any leaks. This will make
your home more efficient later on when
winter hits its stride.
Remove window air conditioners for
the winter. If they cant be removed,
seal them with caulking or tape and
cover them with an airtight, insulated
jacket. If you have forced-air systems,
move furniture away from the vents so
that air can flow better around the home
and keep it comfortable.
Check weatherstripping around windows and doors and make the necessary
adjustments. Installing additional insulation also can help reduce energy consumption.
A few tips can help homeowners prepare for autumn in eco-friendly ways.

5 simple ways to increase energy

efficiency and savings
Fall and winter can be tough on your home and your wallet. As temperatures drop, chances
are your furnace will be working overtime. This results in two things greater energy consumption and higher heating bills. In fact, costs associated with heating and cooling a home
year-round typically comprise two-thirds of the average energy bill.
Try these easy DIY
projects to help cut
down on energy loss
and expenses:
1. Replace worn
weather-stripping
around doors and windows. Worn weatherstripping can create
drafts and let heated
air out, stressing your
furnace and compromising your comfort.
Replacing it takes little
time and is a low-cost,
high-impact solution.
2. Top up or replace
old insulation in your
attic. A poorly insulated attic is a primary source of energy loss. Also, over time, some types of insulation can
settle and compact, allowing heat to escape through gaps. Experts recommend topping up or
replacing attic insulation with a dimensionally stable batt insulation like Roxul Comfortbatt.
Aim for an R-value of at least R-50 or a depth of roughly 16 inches.
3. Insulate basement headers and walls. Uninsulated basement headers are common, especially
in older homes. They can act as a gateway for heated air to escape. Fixing the problem is fast
and easy. Simply cut Comfortbatt mineral wool insulation to fit the cavity and compress into
place. Doing this throughout your basement will prevent heat loss and can potentially save
hundreds of dollars each year.
4. Caulk around windows. Cracks and crevices are a source of heat loss. They can also be an
entry point for water/moisture, as well as for unwelcome insects. Preventative maintenance,
such as caulking, can improve energy efficiency and prevent costly repairs.
5. Change your furnace filter. Make it a point to check your furnace filter monthly, always
changing it when its dirty. This will improve the performance and efficiency of your furnace,
saving you money.

How to improve indoor air quality in winter

Homes tend to be stuffier in autumn and winter. As temperatures
outside dip, windows are closed and air quality inside homes
can suffer.
Poor indoor air quality can not only be uncomfortable, causing
residents to experience headaches, dry eyes and nasal congestion, but also can be unhealthy. According to the American Lung
Association, poor indoor air quality can cause or contribute to
the development of infections, lung cancer and chronic lung diseases, such as asthma.
Though its not feasible or healthy to open windows when temperatures outside dip to near or below freezing, there are steps
everyone can take to improve the indoor air quality in their
homes.
Add to your dcor with plants. Plants provide both aesthetic
and practical appeal to a homes interior. Houseplants can clean
and purify the air in a home, helping to remove formaldehyde,
benzene and other toxins that can make indoor air unhealthy to
breathe. Benzene is an irritant that can cause dizziness,
headache, nausea, and blurred vision, among other side effects. Formaldehyde, which is often found
in homes thanks to its widespread use in a range of products, can cause watery eyes, nausea and wheezing.
Watch what you are lighting up. Many homeowners know that smoking indoors drastically reduces
indoor air quality, putting even nonsmokers at heightened risk of developing various respiratory ailments. Homeowners concerned about the indoor air quality in their homes should ban smoking inside,
no matter how low temperatures dip outside. In addition, homeowners with wood-burning stoves and
fireplaces should be especially diligent maintaining these features, as they can release harmful soot
and smoke if they are not taken care of. Some people may also be allergic to incense and scented candles, so keep a watchful eye on residents and guests whenever you light candles or sticks of incense.
If any symptoms of allergies appear, avoid lighting any more candles or incense, waiting until you
can open the windows if you want to light any again.
Purchase an air purifier. Air purifiers are beneficial year-round, helping to remove allergens and particles from a home. High-efficiency particulate air filters, known as HEPA filters, are extremely effective at removing airborne particulates from the air inside your home.
Pay attention to pets. Like their owners, pets tend to spend more time indoors during the winter. That
means more fur and pet dander, the skin flakes in an animals fur or hair that can trigger allergic reactions, is likely in your home during the winter than in the summer. To combat this, bathe your pets
regularly in the winter, making sure to wash the animals bedding in hot water on a weekly basis as
well.
Open the windows when possible. Winter does not typically provide many opportunities to open the
windows, but you might get a few chances to let some fresh air in through the windows during winter.
Make the most of these opportunities, and when possible crack the windows when youre cleaning so
dust and other particles that kick up have a path outside of your home.
Clean interior air should be a year-round priority, but homeowners may have to go the extra mile to
keep their homes interior air clean when winter arrives. FH158409
CAPTION: Plants can improve indoor air quality by helping to remove harmful irritants from the air.

Butch & Lynne Hart

Chosen Grand Marshals
Of 2015 Bradford Pumpkin Show
The Pumpkin Show Committee has chosen lifelong Bradford residents Butch and Lynne Hart to serve as
Grand Marshals of the 2015 Bradford Pumpkin Show. Both have been involved in many activities through the
years. For well over 15 years, they have been head of the Produce Dept. held in the Display Building. This has
been a lot of fun, meeting local gardeners and farmers and finding out how they grow those big pumpkins
1,050 lbs. was the largest pumpkin entered, they said.
Butch and Lynne graduated in 1961 and 1962 from Bradford High School. Butch retired from General Motors after 38 years and Lynne retired from Nationwide Insurance and now works part- time at the Bradford
Public Library.
They have served on various Pumpkin Show committees and community organizations over the years. It
all started back in the 1970s when their boys were in Boy Scouts and the entire family started cleaning and
bagging confetti, then helping to sell confetti every night. Their very good friend Dick Patty, who was very
active in the Pumpkin Show, would always suggest something more to do. Dick was very good at getting people
involved in helping with the Pumpkin Show. He got Butch on the Board of Directors and from then on they
started the first Kiddie Tractor Pull, helped with the Pet & Novelty Parade, and helped with the Property Decorating Contest.
Butch was president of the JayCees and the week of the Pumpkin Show was a lot of work, but they had
good help. The Bradford community has taken over and is doing a great job! The main job for them now is
making peanut butter pies. Butch has been the official stapler of the Lucky Pumpkin Drawing and thats a lot
of stapling for 200 tickets! They are still selling confetti, but just one night. Its still fun selling confetti even
if youre in your 70s, but enjoyable when working with good friends. Thanks, Tom and Linda Moore!
Other community organizations the Harts have been involved with are Bradford Summer Rec, president
and vice president of the Bradford Pee Wee, members of the Immaculate Conception Church on the Festival
Committee, CCD teacher, Pastoral Council, Cleaning Angel, and funeral dinners. Butch coached high school
baseball four years and Lynne helped in the classroom and PTO.
The Harts have been married 51 years. They have three sons, nine grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. They are Jim, Pam, Riley Hart, Bree (Hart) and Brad Gantt, daughter Brenley, Eric and Kathy Hart, daughters Erika and Olivia of Bradford. Mike Hart and Bev, of Covington, Ashley (Hart) and William DeBord, son
Liam, of Greenville, Erin and son Braxton of Greenville, Zack and Emily, daughter of Ariana, son Zane of Troy,
Brad and Nick of Covington, Bevs children, Stephi, Hannan, Steven, Sarah, and Michael of Covington. This
all makes for a wonderful family get together in their Bradford backyard!
We started out just raising our family and serving our community. We had no idea it would develop into
so many years of helping out whenever and wherever we could. We are very appreciative and feel honored to
have received this recognition. There have been many people over the years that have served and we are grateful
to be included in that group, said Lynne and Butch.

off what you did through your pageant attire.
Contestants will be judged on stage in the following categories: Appearance, Stage Presence/Poise, Originality, and Crowd Response. There
will be no pre-judging or interviewing of the contestants.
