The Tower District Brewfest takes

With the huge surge in popularity of craft beers, and with so many of
those beers represented at the dozens of
Tower District restaurants and bars, the

a perfect fit. The event is in its 6th year
and attendance has grown to nearly 1,000
attendees. Its a fun-filled, day of tasty
sampling!

Fresnos home-brew club the

in the event from the beginning and this
year, due to a change in state law, several
home brewers will be offering samplings
of their personal craft beers. Event attendees will be able to vote for their favorite
home brew and the winner will be presented with a trophy and bragging rights
to being the first ever, most popular home
brew at the Tower District Brewfest.

In addition to the brews, Bobby Salazars Taqueria, Zen Wok Fusion,

Sequoia Brewing Company and Me-NEds Pizza will be serving up food to the
crowds. Each ticket holder will receive a
meal voucher for one of these offerings
and additional food may be purchased as
well.

In keeping with a proper Brewfest, traditional polka and oompah music
will be featured by Ed Hulls Polkateers
with the Valleys own Deja Blues wrapping up the afternoon with some foot
stompin, dance-inspiring, upbeat, rhythm
and blues. It will be an afternoon of tasty
brews, fantastic food, great music, and
lots of fun.

Abundant
Harvest
Organics
Simply Bringing You the Family Farm

INGSBURG, CA - It is not difficult to

see the surrounding land, but its often
overlooked that food is grown on either
side of the highways and freeways driven every
day. Many Fresno residents have fruits and
vegetables as neighbors and others live only a few
miles away from them; but at least once a week
everyone still drives to a store to buy their groceries. What if you knew who grew the potatoes
or apples you bought at the store?

Well, Dennis Rosales has brought produce from surrounding organic farms together in
one location for residents of Fresno and Clovis to
pick up. Dennis has been providing this service
for the last seven years, and recently has changed
his location to Kristinas Natural Ranch Market.

Abundant Harvest Organics (AHO) in
Kingsburg is where the produce, from four-tosix farmers, is gathered, boxed, and delivered
weekly to Dennis. AHO is a farm-share delivery
service and each week subscribers place an order
of produce and within days that same produce is
picked from a certified organic farm and delivered to their city. Alongside their weekly delivery
box, subscribers can now add-on bulk produce,
ready-made meals and desserts, dried or fresh
herbs, raw milk, pastured eggs, and many more
organic products. It is truly a onestop shop for
organic grocery shopping.

Abundant Harvest is run by the
Peterson Family who wanted to provide nutritional food free of pesticides and is designed for
consumers to know exactly where their food was
coming from. For this reason every box comes
with a newsletter providing the names and
emails of the farmers with the produce they provided for the weekly share. The Peterson Family
also provides weekly insight to Uncle Verns life,
a character Vernon created to share his experiences. His stories go beyond his farm experience
and also venture to offer encouragement and at
times religious guidance.

Vernon Peterson, also known as Uncle
Vern by his subscribers, is Owner of Abundant Harvest Organics. He and Dennis met in
2000 at a church in Kingsburg. A year before
launching AHO, Vernon explained his concept
to Dennis and Dennis saw it as an opportunity
to help family farmers with whom he attended

church. Soon after getting started, Dennis was

one of the very first Community Hosts with only
25+ subscribers. The numbers kept growing until
he reached his current 40+ subscribers.

Each week the box is built by Vernons
wife Carol and Vernons son Erik to provide a
variety of fruits, veggies, and herbs. From there
the produce is picked, packed and sent out to
subscribers, all within days of hanging on vines,
trees, or dug in dirt.

Theres a lot that goes into making
Abundant Harvest Organics work, but for us its
the relationships that matter; the community
of people were informing about a farmers life
and where their food is coming from; with our
Abundant Harvest Kitchen its about providing
delicious organic food for busy people. I feel like
were all connected by what we serve at our
dinner table, says Heather Mondello,

Dennis believed in this tough market
being more convenient would allow him to host
more people so he bought a truck and delivered
to various communities. However, in the last
few months, hes realized he could no longer
keep traveling around and began looking for a
location where people would come pick up their
produce. As time has it, Kristinas Natural Ranch
Market was looking to have some of Abundant
Harvests product in its store. In no time the
store became the new drop off site, though Dennis adds, [He is] currently in discussions with

several other businesses where [he] can make

deliveries available to a larger portion of Fresno/
Clovis subscribers. One ideal location would be
Gulianos Fruits, Nuts & Veggies so people in
Oakhurst may have a convenient place to shop
us.

Abundant Harvest Organics launched
a new adventure last Winter when they opened
the Abundant Harvest Kitchen. The kitchen is
an opportunity for subscribers to add to their
boxes organic prepared frozen meals and desserts. Mr. Peterson adds, Just like many of you,
we have been on a journey to live and eat more
healthfully. Our desire for affordable, chemically unaltered food led us to develop Abundant
Harvest Organics and the Abundant Harvest
Kitchen. This one-stop pick-up saves you time,
money and simplifies your life.

The best part? Every week you and
your family enjoy seasonal, fresh, organic produce and meals at an affordable price, explains
Mr. Peterson.

A Fun Recipe for Kids

4. Separate crescent dough into triangles,

and lay on wax paper. Spread each with
creamed cheese.

ooking with kids can be a challenge,

but theres no need to tackle hollandaise or souffles. When looking for
a kid-friendly recipe, choose something
thats simple and hands-on. For example,
the following recipe for Texas Reds in a
Blanket involves spreading cream cheese,
folding refrigerated crescent roll dough
and sprinkling cinnamon sugar, giving
junior pastry chefs plenty to do.

The accompanying sauce only
requires the use of a microwave, though
you should handle any hot bowls and
cookie sheets yourself. Use Texas Rio Star
Grapefruit, which is sweeter than other
varieties of grapefruit. The grapefruit
season runs from October to May. Its
important to select fruit during the time
they would naturally be available. Their
flavors are much more pronounced. When
buying grapefruit, look for fruits that feel
heavy for their size, as that indicates a
juicy fruit.

Texas Reds in a Blanket Makes
four servings. Although, you may think
about doubling up on the ingredients as
these are sure to go quick.

5. Place three grapefruit segments on

wide end of each triangle; roll each triangle into crescent shape enclosing grapefruit segments.
6. Combine 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon and
1 tablespoon sugar on waxed paper; roll
grapefruit crescent in cinnamon sugar;
Place on a parchment-lined cookie sheet.
7. Bake for 25 minutes or until golden

t is no secret that there is more animals

human beings. And as hopeless as it may seem
that well never be able to rescue them all, a
kind-hearted shelter shows its face and lends a
helping hand.

In this issue of The Valleys Nickel
we wanted to introduce you to one of the few
organizations in the Central Valley who are
working very hard to make a difference.

Animal Rescue of Fresno A No Kill
Dog Adoption Center is all about dogs; mutts,
mongrels, critters, canines, characters. A nokill dog shelter since 1998, and unlike a lot of
shelters ARF is actually a completely volunteer
run organization, dependent upon the kindness
of strangers, the generous donations of local
businesses, and the benevolence of dog lovers
throughout the Central Valley.

Our four-legged friends come from
various high kill shelters in Fresno, Clovis and
beyond; from owner surrenders, and from our
network of Foster families. Shelter dogs are
chosen upon the passing of a designated temperament test (touching of ears, peeking into
mouths, etc.) to determine their friendliness
to people, and then relocated to the safe and
compassionate environment of ARF. There,
they are loved, cherished, and basically spoiled
rotten until they find a fur-ever home of their
very own.

All our furry residents spend their
days mingling with other dogs in spacious play
yards, chasing balls, chewing toys, splashing

in pools, and generally enjoying the good life.

Something, they all deserve. At night, each
lucky dog snoozes softly in a cozy kennel,
burrowed deep under a cuddly warm blanket.
Okay, and well admit, they may just be going
to bed with the occasional treat.

Animals with ARF are given a unique
opportunity to help them find their forever
family by taking them on a road trip and
bringing them to other states. Several times
a year, Animal Rescue of Fresno drives their
colorfully decorated Heaven Can Wait van
to the SoHumane facility in Medford, Oregon,
where many lucky dogs are quickly adopted.
In addition, more fortunate critters are taken
to Minnesotas and Santa Rosas Compassion

The Heaven Can Wait van

Without Borders, where they all have a better
chance of finding their new families.

Animal Rescue of Fresno is always in
need of contributions from the community to
help make sure they can continue doing what
they do. And it doesnt have to be a financial
contribution, there are a lot of different ways
the average person can give to the shelter. Donated items are always appreciated, and ARF
accepts everything from towels and blankets
to general office supplies like stamps and legal
sized envelopes.

Volunteering is another way that
members of the community can donate to the
organization. Our facility houses more than

50 dogs! Meeting all of their needs requires

quite a bit of work from all of the volunteers.
ARF relies on those volunteers to operate and
maintain the facility. If you think this would be
a great fit for you and youd like to help us out,
send an email to volunteer@arf-fresno.com.

you can help, please visit our website at www.
