Substances and preparations which may explode under the effect of a flame or if
subjected to shocks or friction.
Caution:
Avoid shocks, friction, sparks and heat.
Example :
Benzoyl peroxide, picric acid
Danger:
Substances and preparations which give rise to a highly exothermic reaction in contact
with other substances, particularly flammable substances.
Caution:
Keep away from flammable, combustible and spontaneously combustible materials.
Example :
Lithium peroxide, potassium nitrate, sodium chlorate
Danger:
Liquid substances and preparations having an extremely low flash-point below 0C and
a low boiling-point below 35C and gaseous substances and preparations which are
flammable in contact with air at ambient temperature and pressure.
Caution:
Avoid any contact with igniting sources.
Example : Hydrogen, acetylene, butane, silane, phosphine, diethyl ether, pentane
Danger: (1) Substance igniting spontaneously at room temperature when in contact with air, without
the help of flames and sparks.
Caution:
Avoid contact with air.
Example :
Butyl lithium (solution), Raney nickel
Danger: (2) Substances producing flammable vapours when in contact with water or wet air.
Caution:
Avoid contact with water and wet air.
Example :
Metallic sodium, sodium hydride
Danger: (3) Liquid with very low flash point below 21 C, without being extremely flammable.
Caution:
Keep away from flames, heat and sparks.
Example :
Acetone, ethanol, ethyl acetate, hexane
Danger: 4) Substances or solids igniting easily when in short contact with igniting source and
continue burning after the suppression of the igniting source.
Caution:
Avoid any contact with igniting sources.
Example:
Iron powder or filings, magnesium strips.
Danger:
Substances and liquids characterized by a low flash point (between (21C and 55C).
