COLLABORATION BETWEEN

UK

AND

The UKIERI Research Cooperation programme is designed to

facilitate a step-change in research and education cooperation
between the UK and India that will be associated with high quality,
innovative research and academic excellence.
Each project for funding should involve a mix of activities and
must include two lead teams: one based in the UK and the other
based in India. The collaboration should involve staff and researcher
exchanges between the UK and India, including for research
students. The programme is open to all universities and research
centres and teams in the UK and India.
A key objective of the UKIERI project is to engage with
networks of researchers. Thus, in addition to the two lead teams of
collaborators (termed the Hubs), other research teams (the
Satellites), including those from business and industry, are
encouraged to become directly involved
Full details of the programme can be obtained from below link:

All AICTE approved Colleges may avail the opportunity and

Policy dialogue

Over the next five years, the UK-India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) aims
to substantially improve research and education links between India and the UK,
ensuring in the longer term that we become each other's partner of choice in education.
Mutuality
The initiative is based on mutuality and was discussed by Prime Ministers Manmohan
Singh and Tony Blair at meetings in 2004 and 2005. Since then there have been
discussions between a wide range of government ministers on both sides. Most recently
the University Grants Commission co-hosted two conferences that brought together
experts from universities and research institutions to discuss the Initiative benefits and
design. On 18th April, at an event at No 10 Downing Street attended by the Indian High
Commissioner to UK , Tony Blair called attention to the benefits to both countries.
Funding
The UK Government has committed over 12 Million to the Initiative through the
Department for Education and Skills (DfES), the Foreign and Commonwealth Office
(FCO), the Office of Science and Innovation (OSI) and the British Council. BP, BAE
Systems, GlaxoSmithKline, Shell are Corporate Champions of the Initiative, and have
pledged around 2 million cash and a similar value in-kind support. We are in
discussions with the Government of India as well as Indian private sector sponsors
about
further
collaborative
involvement.
The three main strands of the initiative are:
Higher Education and Research
Schools and
Professional and Technical Skills.

Higher Education and Research

The main focus of the investment will be on higher education
and, within this, promoting a strong emphasis on research
oriented links between centres of excellence. We expect high
impact in areas of science, technology and social sciences that
are crucial for the future of both countries and their place in the
globalised and increasingly knowledge based economy. More...
Schools
Activities in schools will also be an integral element of the
initiative, bringing together clusters of schools in the UK and
India for joint curriculum projects and professional development
opportunities.

Professional and Technical Skills

The initiative will also include activities devoted to a
strengthening of links between centres of vocational excellence
in both countries, and providing opportunities for workforce
development in areas of skills gaps, identified by the business
community. This strand will focus on the financial services and
creative industries sectors and other areas identified in
collaboration with corporate partners. More...
