NEW YORK It is the place where a limping Willis Reed inspired the Knicks to the
NBA championship, where Wayne Gretzky
said goodbye to hockey, where Joe Frazier
stunned Muhammad Ali in boxings Fight of
the Century.
The sports world regards Madison Square
Garden as sacred ground, and on Friday it actually was, as Pope Francis closed his Big Apple tour with Mass before 20,000 jubilant
Catholics.
We are in Madison Square Garden, a
place synonymous with this city, he said in
opening his homily, which was delivered in
Spanish. This is the site of important athletic, artistic and musical events attracting people not only from this city, but from the whole
world.
The world surely watched as Francis offered a short but poignant meditation on the
challenges of finding God in city life. In doing so, he tied a bow on the main theme of his
landmark visit to America: Recognizing the
less fortunate.
In big cities, beneath the roar of traffic,

Boehners stunning announcement Friday that he
would resign next month not only shuffles the deck in
Washington, but could bring changes to New Jersey as
well.
Republican members of the New Jersey delegation
had not decided who they would support to become the
new head of the fractious GOP House caucus. Also unanswered: what impact, if any, the leadership switch
might mean to New Jersey.
A new speaker from the more conservative and confrontational wing of the GOP could lead to more crises
and government shutdowns. It could also lead to a shuffling of other leadership spots and committee assignments.
House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy of California is considered to be one possible successor to Boehner.
Republican Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen of Morris
County would appear to have the most to lose. He is
chairman of the defense subcommittee of the House
Appropriations Committee, helping to control the
purse strings of one of the largest areas of government
spending.
I thank John Boehner for serving as speaker of the
entire House, Frelinghuysen said. We should all be
grateful for his unqualified support of our men and
