The Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistic
s Act (20 USC 1092(f)) is the landmark federal law, originally known as the Campu
s Security Act that requires colleges and universities across the United States
to disclose information about crime on and around their campuses. The law is tie
d to an institution's participation in federal student financial aid programs. T
he Clery Act is enforced by the U.S. Department of Education.<br><br>
Amendments to the Clery Act were added through the Higher Education Opportunity
Act of 2008 (HEOA, P.L. 110-315). The HEOA amended the Clery Act by adding a re
quirement that institutions of higher education (IHE) develop and distribute imm
ediate campus emergency response and evacuation procedures. The HEOA also requir
ed IHEs to report bias-related hate crimes in four new categories: larceny, simp
le assault, intimidation, and destruction/damage/vandalism of property. <br><br>
The most recent amendments to the Clery Act were adopted as part of the reauthor
ization of the Violence Against Women Act (VAWA, P.L. 113-4). VAWA incorporated
provisions from the Campus Sexual Violence Elimination Act (S. 128/H.R. 812).
These provisions included, among other things, new reporting requirements for IH
Es beyond the crime statistics currently required to be reported in Annual Secur
ity Reports. These newly reportable crime categories include domestic violence,
dating violence, and stalking, and bias applicable to hate crime reporting (nat
ional origin and gender identity).<br><br>
Possible consequences for non-compliance with the Clery Act/HEOA include:<br><br

Suspension or limiting of Title IV funding<br><br>
Civil fines of up to $35,000 per violation<br><br>
Reputational damage due to negative media attention<br><br>
Litigation

f3340;">Graduation Rate Disclosure Statement</span><br><br>
Explanation of our responsibilities under the Clery Act
As an institution that participates in the student financial assistance programs
authorized by Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965, as amended, we must
disclose our graduation rate to current students and employees and, upon reques
t, prospective students.
The number we are required to report is the rate at which our full-time, degreeseeking undergraduate students who have enrolled at UIC for the first time and h
ave not previously enrolled at any other institution of higher education graduat
e from their programs within 150 percent of the normal time for graduation. (UIC
's graduation rate is similar to other public, urban, predominantly commuter ins
titutions.)
UIC's Six-Year Graduation Rate:
At the end of six years, the graduation rate for first-time freshmen who entered
the University of Illinois at Chicago in the Fall 2008 on a full-time basis was
60% (as reported in the IPEDS Graduation Rate Survey). Another 4% of these stud
ents were still enrolled at UIC.<br><br><br><br>
