Explain the three methods to measure indicated power of an IC engine in laboratory.
In a test on a three cylinder four-stroke internal combustion engine with 22 cm bore and 26 cm
stroke the following were the observations during a trail period of one hour :
Fuel consumption = 8.0 kg, Calorific value = 45000 kJ/kg, total revolutions of the crank shaft
=1200, mean effective pressure = 6 bar, net load on brake = 1.5 KN, brake drum diameter = 1.8
m, rope diameter = 3 cm, mass of cooling water =550kg, inlet temperature of water = 27 0C,exit
temperature of water = 550C,air consumed = 300 kg, ambient temperature = 300C , exhaust gas
temaparature = 310 0C , specific heat of gases = 1.1 kJ/kg-K. Calculate (i) indicated and brake
power, (ii) Mechanical efficiency, (iii) indicated thermal efficiency. Also draw a heat balance in

kJ/min.
8. During the trail of a single cylinder four-stroke oil engine, the following results were obtained.
Cylinder diameter = 20 cm , Stroke = 40 cm , indicated mean effective pressure = 6 bar,
Torque= 407 N-m, Speed = 250 rpm, oil consumption = 4.0 kg/hr, Calorific value = 43000
kJ/kg, cooling water flow rate = 4.5 kg/min , Air-fuel ratio = 30:1, Rise in cooling water
temperature = 450C, exhaust gas temaparature = 420 0C , Room temperature = 20 0C , Mean
specific heat of exhaust gases = 1.0 kJ/kg-K, Specific heat of water = 4.18 kJ/kg-K.
Draw up a heat balance sheet for the test in kW and in Percent.
9. The following data were obtained from a Morse test on 4 cylinder, 4-stroke cycle SI engine,
coupled to a hydraulic dynamometer operating at a constant speed of 1500 rpm.
Brake load with all cylinders firing = 296 N
Brake load with cylinder No. 1 not firing = 201 N
Brake load with all cylinder No. 2 not firing = 206 N
Brake load with all cylinders No.3 not firing = 192 N
Brake load with all cylinder No.4 not firing = 296 N
The brake power in kW is calculated using the equation BP = WN/42300, Where W is the brake
load in Newtons and Nis the speed of the engine in rpm. Calculate:
(i)

Brake Power (ii) Indicated Power (iii) Friction Power and (iv) Mechanical Efficiency

10. A test on a single cylinder, four-stroke oil engine having a bore of 15 cm and stroke of 30 cm
gave the following results.
Speed = 300 rpm, indicated mean effective pressure = 7 bar, Brake Torque= 200 N-m, fuel

fuel ratio = 22:1, Rise in cooling water temperature = 30 0C, exhaust gas temperature = 410 0C ,
Room temperature = 20 0C , Room pressure = 1 bar, Mean specific heat of exhaust gases = 1.0
kJ/kg-K, R= 0.2872 kJ/kg-K of air, Specific heat of water = 4.18 kJ/kg-K.
Determine (i) indicated thermal efficiency (ii) volumetric efficiency base on the atmospheric
conditions (iii) Draw a energy balance sheet in terms of kJ/min and on Percent basis.
11. The following observations were made during a trail of a single cylinder four stroke cycle gas
engine having cylinder diameter of 18 cm and a stroke of 24 cm.
Duration of trail = 30 min, total number of revolutions = 9000, Total number of explosions =
4450, indicated mean effective pressure = 5 bar, Net load on the brake wheel = 390 N, Effective
diameter of brake wheel =1 m, Brake Torque= 200 N-m, fuel consumption = 2.4 kg/hr, Calorific
value of gaseous fuel at NTP = 19 MJ/m 3, Total fuel used at NTP 2.4 m 3, Total air used= 36 m3,
Pressure of air = 720 mm of mercury, Density of air at NTP = 1.29 kg/ m3, cooling water flow =
80 kg , Air-fuel ratio = 22:1, Rise in cooling water temperature = 30 0C, exhaust gas temperature
= 350 0C , Room temperature = 17 0C , Mean specific heat of exhaust gases = 1.0 kJ/kg-K, R=
0.2872 kJ/kg-K of air, Specific heat of water = 4.18 kJ/kg-K.
Draw up a heat balance sheet and estimate the mechanical and indicated thermal efficiencies of
the engine.
12. A gas engine working on constant volume cycle gave the following results during a one hour test
run. Cylinder diameter = 24 cm; stroke = 48cm, effective diameter of brake drum wheel 1.25 m,
Net load on the brake 1236 N, Average speed 226.7 rpm, Average explosions per minute 77,
MEP 7.5 bar, gas used 13 m3 at 15 0C and 771 mm of mercury pressure, lower calorific value of
the gas 22000kJ/ m3 at NTP, cooling water used 625 kg, inlet water temperature = 25 0C, outlet
water temperature = 60 0C. Determine (i) Mechanical efficiency (ii) specific fuel consumption in
m3/IP hour (iii) indicated and brake thermal efficiencies. Draw up a heat balance for the engine
on minute basis. NTP conditions are 760 mm Hg and 0 0C.
13. The following readings were recorded during a trail on a single cylinder two stroke diesel
engine. Power supplied by the electric motor = 1.5 kW, Rated speed = 500 rpm, Net load on the
brake = 225 N, diameter of brake wheel = 100 cm, Brake Torque= 200 N-m, rate of flow of
cooling water through engine jacket = 13.65 kg/min, Rise in cooling water temperature = 10 0C,
fuel consumption = 2.0 kg/hr, Calorific value of fuel used = 43000 kJ/kg, Air-fuel ratio = 32:1,
exhaust gas temperature = 3450C , Ambient temperature = 25 0C and ambient pressure = 1 bar ,
Mean specific heat of exhaust gases = 1.006 kJ/kg0C, Take L=D= 30 mm .
Draw up a heat balance sheet on % basis and estimate the mechanical and indicated thermal
efficiencies of the engine, brake specific fuel consumption, brake mean effective pressure.

14. A four stroke four cylinder petrol engine was tested at full throttle speed. The following were
the power measured during the Morse test.
With all cylinders working = 14.7 kW
With number 1 cylinder cut off = 10.1 kW
With number 2 cylinder cut off = 10.3 kW
With number 3 cylinder cut off = 10.2 kW
With number 4 cylinder cut off = 10.4 kW
The bore and stroke of each cylinder are 80 mm and 100 mm respectively.
The clearance volume of the cylinder is 100 cc. the fuel consumed at a rate of 5.44kg/hr. if the
calorific value of the fuel is 41900kJ/kg, Determine
(i) Mechanical efficiency (ii) Indicated thermal efficiency (iii) Relative efficiency with
reference to the brake thermal efficiency
15. Morse test was conducted on a four stroke four cylinder petrol engine at constant speed and the
following were the power measured.
The bore and stroke of each cylinder is 75 mm and 100 mm respectively.
The clearance volume of the cylinder is 100 cc. the fuel consumed at a rate of 6.0 kg/hr. if the
calorific value of the fuel is 42000kJ/kg, Determine
(i) Indicated power (ii) Frictional power (iii) Mechanical efficiency (iv) Indicated thermal
efficiency (v) Relative efficiency with reference to the brake thermal efficiency
