Purpose of Formative Assessment:

Purpose of Summative Assessment:


Compares a students learning to
learning outcomes.
Reported as the achievement
grade.
Will be reported and viewed
through Power School Portal.
WILL adjust final achievement
grade.

Focus on student improvement.

May be reported and viewed


through Power School Portal.
Is NOT part of achievement grade.

Is considered risk-free.

There will be a cumulative mid-term assessment during the year, as well as a final
cumulative assessment at the end of the year.
Course Supplies Required:
Binder
Lined paper
Pens, pencils, erasers, rulers
Non-scientific calculator (IPODS/Cell phones will not be allowed as calculators)
Geometry set
Graph paper
-NO IPODS/Cell phones will be allowed for use as a calculator in math class.

There are 12 units of work that will be covered during the 3 terms of the year. Each unit of the
course consists of notes, daily assignments/practice, quizzes, and a unit exam.
All grade 8 students will follow the same curriculum and complete the same unit, midterm and
final assessments.

The grade 9 students write a Provincial Achievement Test (PAT) as their final exam. This is a
common assessment written by all grade 9 students across Alberta.
High School Recommendations
It is important that students and parents understand that the grade 9 mathematics course,
and the proficiency a student displays in it, dictates the high school program they will
enter in grade 10. This will be discussed ongoing in class with students and more formally in
the spring as they prepare to register for High School.
Daily Assignments/Practice
Students can expect assignments/home practice most evenings unless they are very diligent
workers in class.
Students should understand that incompleteness affects their success in the grade 9
mathematics program which could affect their high school program choice. The best

preparation for quizzes and exams is to do the daily assignments/practice on a regular basis.
Practice DOES help make perfect in math.
The following supplies are required for the mathematics 9 program:
- Large binder

- lined paper

- pencils/erasers

- scientific calculator (a fraction key is beneficial)
