This is our presentation on representation of ethnicity shown in
different tv dramas. The definition of ethnicity is: The fact or state of belonging to a social group that has a common, national or cultural tradition. This basically means being a part of a social group that includes having a common distinctive language, culture or religion. In media these social groups can be shown in different ways and can either be obvious or hidden within the tv drama. The most common stereotypes in our society are listed on the board. Examples for each one would be: Black people are stereotyped to rob people and hang around in gangs. They are also known to carry weapons with intentions to hurt or threaten people e.g. stabbing White people are known to be dominant and powerful in the UK. Asians are smart, rich and known as being specialists in curry. Polish do jobs that no one wants to do in the UK e.g. cleaning for a living. Finally travellers are known for running funfairs, being troublemakers and never being in school, which leads their stereotype to not being educated. We have chosen skins as our example supporting ethnicity in tv dramas. Muslims are typically known to be against homosexuality as it is against their culture. In this particular episode of skins, it is expected that the family of Anwar will not take well to him being friends with a gay man. This makes you question their beliefs in the tv drama as the dad ends up accepting this fact. In media, race can be portrayed in a common stereotyped way. To the audience this can be harmful or offensive as they could be offended by the way certain ethnicities are portrayed in a tv
drama. For example racial stereotypes are based on social
myths, this is seen in this video. Just a heads up the video isnt English. This clip was showing a girl who was given illegal drugs at a party, who ended up committing suicide. The African boy who is black, Thomas gets the blame for her death because they believe he gave her the drugs. He is paid to leave his job and is left jobless simply due to the fact of ethnical stereotypes and him being a troublemaker. It also links to how white people are seen as more powerful/dominant. These stereotypes dont apply to everyone in these social groups.
