Two coherent microwave sources A and B are situated 28 cm apart as shown in the
figure below. They emit waves of the same amplitude and which are in phase and
polarized in the same plane. A microwave detector is placed on a line XY which is
parallel to, and 300 cm from a line AB. M is the mid-point on the line AB. The line M
perpendicular to the line AB meets XY at the point O. The detector is at a point P, 20 cm
above O.

i) Explain the meaning of coherent sources in relation to the superposition of


the two waves.

ii) If the detector at P detects a maximum intensity and there is no maximum between O
and P, estimate the wavelength of the microwaves to two decimal places in cm.
