MODERATOR
: Ladies and Gentlemen, May I have your attention. The
Presentation is about to begin.

Honorable Madam Norza, Distinguished guests, ladies and gentlemen.

Good morning, Assalamualaikum wr.wb

First of all, I would like to welcome you all to this presentation. In this occassion we
would like to have a presentation from Mr. Meor Faris, Mr. Afiq Asri and Mr. Zawir
Zaim

Before the presentation begins, allow us to introduce the presenter. This is Mr Meor
Muhamad Faris, he is the of Inspector in PDRM

Without further ado, I would like to welcome the presenter to deliver the presentation.
All right, Mr Meor

The first question I excited to ask is how we want to donate through charity?

MR MEOR FARIS : Giving donations is often the best way to help. After a natural
disaster, fraudulent "charities" often show up trying to collect money. So, before you
want to make a donation, look for a well-recognized, well-respected name, or do
some research before giving. Many charities simply add donations to their general
fund or to other projects if you do not indicate specifically where you would like the
money to go. If you are donating to help the victims of a specific event, make sure
that's where your money is going.

MODERATOR

: Where should we channel our donation?

MR MEOR FARIS : If you would rather donate food, clothing, or other supplies,
make sure such items are sent to the proper location. Staging areas, the places you
see on TV, often lack the time, space, or personnel to handle these types of
donations. They are busy trying to rescue people that have been trapped or harmed.
Make sure the items are sent to appropriate locations where they can be effectively
sorted and distributed to those in need.
Many schools, mosque, churches and community centers conduct food and clothing
drives during a natural disaster, and these drives are best suited to handle such
donations. It is also a good idea to learn which items are the most needed before

donating. Just know that any effort you make to help, no matter how large or how
small, will be appreciated.

MODERATOR
: Where has MERCY Malaysia responded to and what type of
response did MERCY Malaysia give to the affected communities?

MR AHMAD AFIQ : As to date, MERCY Malaysia has been actively responding to

the affected communities in Kelantan, Terengganu, and Perak and now is closely
monitoring the situation in Pahang & Johor. Since 18th of December until 26th of
December 2014, MERCY Malaysia has distributed more than 3,000 hygiene kits,
provided medical support to existing local health services and has provided food
items to 5,915 beneficiaries in Kelantan. MERCY Malaysia has also distributed 1,400
hygiene kits to 49 evacuation centers in Terengganu.
MERCY Malaysia continues its effort to assess on-going needs in the affected areas
and response are given based on immediate needs in term of food items including
ready to eat food, non-food items & water and hygiene related items.
MERCY Malaysia has also deployed doctors, nurses and psychologists to the
affected areas to provide medical support to local health services. Numerous
MERCY Malaysia volunteers have also assisted in the coordination and distribution
of hygiene kits and food parcels.
MODERATOR
donate?

: If there is anyone want to donate, what kind of things can they

EN AHMAD AFIQ : We prefer cash. With cash donations, MERCY Malaysia is able
to purchase supplies in local regions or in areas closer to the affected areas. We do
not encourage contributions in-kind (such as clothing and blankets). This ensures
that donations from the public is channelled to the people who need it most, and not
utilised unnecessarily to cover logistic costs such as transportation, fuel and
warehouse space rental.

Disaster Medical Specialist

MODERATOR
: How World Health Organisation can help them facing the
natural disaster?

MR ZAWIR : Thank you to moderator, we from WHO can help them by increasing
the disaster medical specialist. Disaster medicine is a fairly new specialty for doctors
who want to be first on the scene of an emergency that involves mass injury or
illness.
Physicians who specialize in disaster medicine also help hospitals and government
agencies design effective disaster response and recovery plans.
Disaster medical specialists aim to minimize casualties from these incidents by
reaching the site as quickly as possible, evaluating and stabilizing the victims, and
evacuating them to health care facilities. They are trained to provide care in the
field and to manage teams of health care professionals, first responders and
volunteers.
Disaster medical specialists work in various clinical jobs when they are not deployed
as part of a disaster response team. Such jobs can include primary care clinics and
offices, emergency departments, and specialty clinics. The bottom line is that
disaster medical specialists can come from any medical or surgical specialty
provided they have the additional training that enables them to function in austere
conditions under incredible pressure.

MODERATOR: So, the disaster medicine will help victim before docter come ?
MR ZAWIR : Yes, disaster medicine is by definition, a high stress specialty. They
never know when they will be sent to a scene or what to expect when you get there.
Some disasters, such as a building collapse, are one time events. The disaster
medical team arrives after the catastrophe and deals with those who have been
injured. Other situations, like an earthquake with aftershocks, can be ongoing. This
increases the number of casualties, and puts the disaster medical team in danger, as
well.
Disaster medicine isnt clean and antiseptic. The pressure is intense. You have to be
comfortable getting your hands dirty and making life-or-death decisions on the spot.
If the recovery work lasts several days, you may have to work long hours, catching
sleep when you can on a cot or even the ground.
When disaster strikes, most people feel helpless and wish they could do
something. Disaster medical specialists are the ones who save lives when the
unthinkable happens.
